Heavy quark production at an Electron-Ion Collider

An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with center-of-mass energies sqrt(s_{eN}) ~ 20-100 GeV and luminosity L ~ 10^{34} cm^{-2} s^{-1} would offer new opportunities to study heavy quark production in high-energy electron or photon scattering on protons and nuclei. We report about an R&D project exploring the feasibility of direct measurements of nuclear gluon densities at large x (gluonic EMC effect, antishadowing) using open charm production at EIC. We describe the charm production rates and angle-momentum distributions at large x and discuss methods of charm reconstruction using next-generation detector capabilities (pi/K identification, vertex reconstruction). The results can be used also for other physics applications of heavy quark production at EIC (fragmentation functions, jets, heavy quark propagation in nuclei).

We introduce the `stealth bosons' $S$, light boosted particles with a decay $S \to AA \to q \bar q q \bar q$ into two daughter bosons $A$, which subsequently decay into four quarks that are reconstructed as a single fat jet. Variables that measure the two-prong structure of fat jets, which are used for diboson resonance searches in hadronic or semi-leptonic final states, classify the jets produced in stealth boson decays as QCD-like - actually, for these variables they may seem more background-like than the QCD background itself. The number of tracks in those jets can also be much higher than for the fat jets arising from the hadronic decay of boosted $W$ and $Z$ bosons. Read More

The radion scalar field might be the lightest new particle predicted by extra-dimensional extensions of the Standard Model, thus possibly leading to the first signatures of new physics at the LHC. We perform a study of its production in association with a $Z$ boson in the custodially protected warped model with a brane-localised Higgs boson addressing the gauge hierarchy problem, with Higgs-radion mixing effects included. While the considered radion production at the LHC would constrain some parts of the parameter space, it is only the ILC program that will be able to cover a significant part of this space through the studied process. MicroBooNE (the Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment) is a short-baseline neutrino experiment based on the technology of a liquid-argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC), and has recently completed its first year of data-taking in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. It aims to address the anomalous excess of events with an electromagnetic final state in MiniBooNE, to measure neutrino-argon interaction cross sections, and to provide relevant R\&D for the future LArTPC experiments, such as DUNE. In these proceedings, we present the first reconstructed energy spectrum of Michel electrons from cosmic muon decays, the first kinematic distributions of the candidate muon tracks from $\nu_{\mu}$-argon charged-current interactions, and a demonstration of an electromagnetic shower reconstruction from $\pi^0$s produced by $\nu_{\mu}$-argon charged-current interactions. Rare $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda l^+l^-$ and $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda\gamma$ decays are investigated in the relativistic quark model based on the quark-diquark picture of baryons. The decay form factors are calculated with the account of all relativistic effects including relativistic transformations of baryon wave functions from rest to moving reference frame and the contribution of the intermediate negative energy states. The momentum transfer squared dependence of the form factors is explicitly determined in the whole accessible kinematical range. Read More

The NA62 experiment recorded a large sample of $K^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ decays in 2007. A peak search has been performed in the reconstructed missing mass spectrum. In the absence of a signal, limits in the range $2 \times 10^{-6}$ to $10^{-5}$ have been set on the squared mixing matrix element $|U_{\mu4} |^2$ between muon and heavy neutrino states, for heavy neutrino masses in the range 300-375 MeV/$c^2$. This paper discusses how to improve the experimental sensitivity of the $\mu^- + N(A,Z) \rightarrow e^+ + N(A,Z-2)$ conversion in a muonic atom, which is a charged lepton number and lepton flavor violating (CLNFV) process. Currently, the measurement of this process is planned with future experiments to search for the $\mu^- -e^-$ conversion with an aluminum target. We demonstrate that a search for $\mu^--e^+$ would be limited to a sensitivity improvement less than a factor of ten due to backgrounds from radiative muon capture, whereas the $\mu^--e^-$ conversion is anticipated to have four orders of magnitude of improvement in its experimental sensitivity. A search is presented for long-lived particles with a mass between 25 and 50 GeV/$c^2$ and a lifetime between 2 and 500 ps, using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The particles are assumed to be pair-produced in the decay of a 125 GeV/$c^2$ Standard-Model-like Higgs boson. Read More

We give a precision analysis of the correlation coefficients of the electron-energy spectrum and angular distribution of the beta decay and radiative beta decay of the neutron with polarized neutron and electron to order 10^(-3). The calculation of correlation coefficients is carried out within the Standard model with contributions of order 10^(-3), caused by the weak magnetism and proton recoil, taken to next-to-leading order in the large proton mass expansion, and with radiative corrections of order "alpha/pi ~ 10^(-3", calculated to leading order in the large proton mass expansion. The obtained results can be used for the planning of experiments on the search for contributions of order 10^(-4) of interactions beyond the Standard model. Read More

We calculate the invariant and helicity amplitudes for the transitions $\Lambda_b~\to~\Lambda^{(\ast)}(J^P)~+~J/\psi$ where the $\Lambda^{(\ast)}(J^P)$ are $\Lambda(sud)$-type ground and excited states with $J^P$ quantum numbers $J^P=\frac12^{\pm},\frac32^{\pm}$. The calculations are performed in the framework of a covariant confined quark model previously developed by us. We find that the values of the helicity amplitudes for the $\Lambda^\ast(1520,\,\frac32^-)$ and the $\Lambda^\ast(1890,\,\frac32^+)$ are suppressed compared with those for the ground state $\Lambda(1116,\,\frac12^+)$ and the excited state $\Lambda^\ast(1405,\,\frac12^-)$. We have searched for proton decays into a charged antilepton ($e^+$, $\mu^+$) plus a meson ($\eta$, $\rho^0$, $\omega$) and neutron decays into a charged antilepton ($e^+$, $\mu^+$) plus a meson ($\pi^-$, $\rho^-$) using Super-Kamiokande (SK) I-IV data, corresponding to 0.316 megaton$\cdot$years of exposure. This measurement updates the previous published result by using 2. Read More
