We present a general framework for the rigorous numerical analysis of time-fractional nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations, with a fractional derivative of order $\alpha\in(0,1)$ in time. The framework relies on three technical tools: a fractional version of the discrete Gr\"onwall-type inequality, discrete maximal regularity, and regularity theory of nonlinear equations. We establish a general criterion for showing the fractional discrete Gr\"onwall inequality, and verify it for the L1 scheme and convolution quadrature generated by BDFs. Read More

The 10 MeV accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) Injector-I test stand at Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) is a testing facility dedicated to demonstrate one of the two injector design schemes [Injector Scheme-I, which works at 325 MHz], for the ADS project in China. The Injector adopted a four vane copper structure RFQ with output energy of 3.2 MeV and a superconducting (SC) section accommodating fourteen \b{eta}g=0. Read More

Sequences with low auto-correlation property have been applied in code-division multiple access communication systems, radar and cryptography. Using the inverse Gray mapping, a quaternary sequence of even length $N$ can be obtained from two binary sequences of the same length, which are called component sequences. In this paper, using interleaving method, we present several classes of component sequences from twin-prime sequences pairs or GMW sequences pairs given by Tang and Ding in 2010; two, three or four binary sequences defined by cyclotomic classes of order $4$. We study the recovery conditions of weighted $\ell_1$ minimization for real signal reconstruction from phaseless compressed sensing measurements when partial support information is available. A Strong Restricted Isometry Property (SRIP) condition is provided to ensure the stable recovery. Moreover, we present the weighted null space property as the sufficient and necessary condition for the success of $k$-sparse phase retrieval via weighted $\ell_1$ minimization. Read More

We study the recovery results of $\ell_p$-constrained compressive sensing (CS) with $p\geq 1$ via robust width property and determine conditions on the number of measurements for Gaussian matrices under which the property holds with high probability. Our paper extends the existing results in Cahill and Mixon (2014) from $\ell_2$-constrained CS to $\ell_p$-constrained case with $p\geq 1$ and complements the recovery analysis for robust CS with $\ell_p$ loss function. Reusable model design becomes desirable with the rapid expansion of machine learning applications. In this paper, we focus on the reusability of pre-trained deep convolutional models. Specifically, different from treating pre-trained models as feature extractors, we reveal more treasures beneath convolutional layers, i. Read More

How the online social media, like Twitter or its variant Weibo, interacts with the stock market and whether it can be a convincing proxy to predict the stock market have been debated for years, especially for China. As the traditional theory in behavioral finance states, the individual emotions can influence decision-makings of investors, it is reasonable to further explore these controversial topics systematically from the perspective of online emotions, which are richly carried by massive tweets in social media. Through thorough studies on over 10 million stock-relevant tweets and 3 million investors from Weibo, it is revealed that inexperienced investors with high emotional volatility are more sensible to the market fluctuations than the experienced or institutional ones, and their dominant occupation also indicates that the Chinese market might be more emotional as compared to its western counterparts. Based on T.Tao's result of norm convergence of multiple ergodic averages for commut-ing transformation, we obtain there is a subsequence which converges almost everywhere. Meanwhile, the ergodic behaviour, which the time average is equal to the space average, of diagonal measures is obtained and we give different result according to the classification of transformations. Single-molecule biophysics has transformed our understanding of the fundamental molecular processes involved in living biological systems, but also of the fascinating physics of life. Far more exotic than a collection of exemplars of soft matter behaviour, active biological matter lives far from thermal equilibrium, and typically covers multiple length scales from the nanometre level of single molecules up several orders of magnitude to longer length scales in emergent structures of cells, tissues and organisms. Biological molecules are often characterized by an underlying instability, in that multiple metastable free energy states exist which are separated by energy levels of typically just a few multiples of the thermal energy scale of kBT, where kB is the Boltzmann constant and T the absolute temperature, implying complex, dynamic inter-conversion kinetics across this bumpy free energy landscape in the relatively hot, wet environment of real, living biological matter. A century after its conception, quantum mechanics still hold surprises that contradict many "common sense" notions. The contradiction is especially sharp in case one consider trajectories of truly quantum objects such as single photons. From a classical point of view, trajectories are well defined for particles, but not for waves. Read More

Despite being so vital to success of Support Vector Machines, the principle of separating margin maximisation is not used in deep learning. We show that minimisation of margin variance and not maximisation of the margin is more suitable for improving generalisation in deep architectures. We propose the Halfway loss function that minimises the Normalised Margin Variance (NMV) at the output of a deep learning models and evaluate its performance against the Softmax Cross-Entropy loss on the MNIST, smallNORB and CIFAR-10 datasets. During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals and GW151226, produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). We developed a Friedrichs-model-like scheme in studying the hadron resonance phenomenology and present that the hadron resonances might be regarded as the Gamow states produced by a Hamiltonian in which the bare discrete state is described by the result of usual quark potential model and the interaction part is described by the quark pair creation model. In an almost parameter-free calculation, the $X(3862)$, $X(3872)$, and $X(3930)$ state could be simultaneously produced with a quite good accuracy by coupling the three P-wave states, $\chi_{c2}(2P)$, $\chi_{c1}(2P)$, $\chi_{c0}(2P)$ predicted in the Godfrey-Isgur model to the $D\bar D$, $D\bar D^{*}$, $D^*\bar D^*$ continuum states. At the same time, we predict that the $h_c(2P)$ state is at about 3890 MeV with a width of about 44 MeV. Read More

Results are presented from a semi-coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, using data collected during the first Advanced LIGO observing run (O1). The search combines a frequency domain matched filter (Bessel-weighted $\mathcal{F}$-statistic) with a hidden Markov model to track wandering of the neutron star spin frequency. No evidence of gravitational waves is found in the frequency range 60-650 Hz. Read More

Foot-mounted inertial positioning (FMIP) and fingerprinting based WiFi indoor positioning (FWIP) are two promising solutions for indoor positioning. However, FMIP suffers from accumulative positioning errors in the long term while FWIP involves a very labor-intensive offline training phase. A new approach combining the two solutions is proposed in this paper, which can limit the error growth in FMIP and is free of any offline site survey phase. Read More

It is well-known that exploiting label correlations is important to multi-label learning. Existing approaches either assume that the label correlations are global and shared by all instances; or that the label correlations are local and shared only by a data subset. In fact, in the real-world applications, both cases may occur that some label correlations are globally applicable and some are shared only in a local group of instances. Read More

Scene-level Programming by Demonstration (PbD) is faced with an important challenge - perceptual uncertainty. Addressing this problem, we present a scene-level PbD paradigm that programs robots to perform goal-directed manipulation in unstructured environments with grounded perception. Scene estimation is enabled by our discriminatively-informed generative scene estimation method (DIGEST). Read More

Dark state as a consequence of interference between different quantum states has great importance in the fields of chip-scale atomic clock and quantum information. For the $\Lambda$-type three-level system, this dark state is generally regarded as being dissipation-free because it is a superposition of two ground states. However, previous studies are based on the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) by neglecting the counter-rotating terms in the system-environment interaction. Read More

Let $S(\mathbb{D})$ be the collection of all holomorphic self-maps on $\mathbb{D}$ of the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$, and $C_{\varphi}$ the composition operator induced by $\varphi\in S(\mathbb{D})$. We obtain that there are no hypercyclic composition operators on the little Bloch space $\mathcal{B}_0$ and the Besov space $B_p$. Read More

We develop proper correction formulas at the starting $k-1$ steps to restore the desired $k^{\rm th}$-order convergence rate of the $k$-step BDF convolution quadrature for discretizing evolution equations involving a fractional-order derivative in time. The desired $k^{\rm th}$-order convergence rate can be achieved even if the source term is not compatible with the initial data, which is allowed to be nonsmooth. We provide complete error estimates for the subdiffusion case $\alpha\in (0,1)$, and sketch the proof for the diffusion-wave case $\alpha\in(1,2)$. Read More

In order to perform autonomous sequential manipulation tasks, perception in cluttered scenes remains a critical challenge for robots. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic approach for robust sequential scene estimation and manipulation - Sequential Scene Understanding and Manipulation(SUM). SUM considers uncertainty due to discriminative object detection and recognition in the generative estimation of the most likely object poses maintained over time to achieve a robust estimation of the scene under heavy occlusions and unstructured environment. Being dominant factors driving the human actions, personalities can be excellent indicators in predicting the offline and online behavior of different individuals. However, because of the great expense and inevitable subjectivity in questionnaires and surveys, it is challenging for conventional studies to explore the connection between personality and behavior and gain insights in the context of large amount individuals. Considering the more and more important role of the online social media in daily communications, we argue that the footprint of massive individuals, like tweets in Weibo, can be the inspiring proxy to infer the personality and further understand its functions in shaping the online human behavior. We show that the Atiyah-Singer index theorem of Dirac operator can be directly proved by promoting the Laplace operator in Hodge's theory to become a Hamiltonian operator in canonical formulation of quantum mechanics. Supersymmetry, an underlined key element in the proof of this theorem, is naturally encoded in the properties of Hodge's theory and Clifford algebra. By taking advantage of algebraic isomorphism between Clifford algebra and exterior algebra in small $\tau$ limit (high temperature limit), which plays a similar role as localization technique in the calculations of supersymmetric quantum mechanical models, we can avoid using the path-integral machine and concisely prove this theorem. Even though the traditional dynamical decoupling methods have the ability to resist dynamic dephasing caused by low frequency noise, they are not appropriate for suppressing the residual geometric dephasing, which arises from the disturbance for the geometric loop in the parameter space. This prevents the precision of quantum manipulation based geometric quantum gates from being promoted further. In this paper, we design two kinds of modified dynamical decoupling schemes to suppress the residual geometric dephasing. Read More

We propose a scheme to simulate topological physics within a single degenerate cavity, whose modes are mapped to lattice sites. A crucial ingredient of the scheme is to construct a sharp boundary so that the open boundary condition can be implemented for this effective lattice system. In doing so, the topological properties of the system can manifest themselves on the edge states, which can be probed from the spectrum of an output cavity field. Read More

We propose a scheme to realize the two-axis counter-twisting spin-squeezing Hamiltonian inside an optical cavity with the aid of phase-locked atom-photon coupling. By careful analysis and extensive simulation, we demonstrate that our scheme is robust against dissipation caused by cavity loss and atomic spontaneous emission, and it can achieve significantly higher squeezing than one axis twisting. We further show how our idea can be extended to generate two-mode spin-squeezed states in two coupled cavities. Read More

Precise measurements are the key to advances in all fields of science. Quantum entanglement shows higher sensitivity than achievable by classical methods. Most physical quantities including position, displacement, distance, angle, and optical path length can be obtained by optical phase measurements. Read More

By using topological degree theory, this paper extends Koebe-Andreev-Thurston theorem to include obtuse intersection angles. Then it considers the characterization problem of circle patterns having the same preassigned contact graphs and dihedral angle datum. To be specific, the article develops the deformation theory by showing that the space of all such patterns could be depicted with the product of the Teichmuller spaces of its interstices. Read More

We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. Read More

In this paper, we theoretically study the impact of class labels from the perspective of class-aware gradient on training of generative adversarial nets (GANs). Our derivation of the gradient shows how exactly the class label information helps GAN training, and reveals that the current GAN models with labeled data still result in an unclear mixed gradient. We thus propose Activation Maximization GAN (AM-GAN) for a clearer gradient guidance to the generator's optimization, where the key insight is: rather than simply optimizing the generated samples towards the real data distribution, with class information provided, we could dynamically assign each sample a target class and maximize its corresponding activation. Photons propagating in Laguerre-Gaussian modes have characteristic orbital angular momentums, which are fundamental optical degrees of freedom. The orbital angular momentum of light has potential application in high capacity optical communication and even in quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally construct a ring cavity with 4 lenses and 4 mirrors that is completely degenerate for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. Read More

By using a dimensionless and varies parameter $\Delta = (m_3 -m_1) / (m_3 +m_1)$, which is used to determine the neutrinos mass hierarchy, we have investigated the impacts of dark energy on the mass hierarchy. Two typical dark energy models are considered: one is the $w$CDM model with a constant equation of state parameter $w$; the other is the CPL model with a parameterized time-varying equation of state $w=w_0+ w_a(1-a)$. Adopting the currently available cosmic observations, and comparing to the $\Lambda$CDM model, our study shows that the upper limits of the total neutrino mass $\sum_\nu m_\nu$ is much looser in the $w$CDM and CPL model. In this paper, we propose gcForest, a decision tree ensemble approach with performance highly competitive to deep neural networks. In contrast to deep neural networks which require great effort in hyper-parameter tuning, gcForest is much easier to train. Actually, even when gcForest is applied to different data from different domains, excellent performance can be achieved by almost same settings of hyper-parameters. Read More

We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially-resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median redshift of z = 0. Read More

Colorization of grayscale images has been a hot topic in computer vision. Previous research mainly focuses on producing a colored image to match the original one. However, since many colors share the same gray value, an input grayscale image could be diversely colored while maintaining its reality. Read More

Researchers often summarize their work in the form of scientific posters. Posters provide a coherent and efficient way to convey core ideas expressed in scientific papers. Generating a good scientific poster, however, is a complex and time consuming cognitive task, since such posters need to be readable, informative, and visually aesthetic. Read More

The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a wide-field two-band photometric survey of the Northern Galactic Cap using the 90Prime imager on the 2.3 m Bok telescope at Kitt Peak. It is a four-year collaboration between the National Astronomical Observatory of China and Steward Observatory, the University of Arizona, serving as one of the three imaging surveys to provide photometric input catalogs for target selection of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project. The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a new wide-field legacy imaging survey in the northern Galactic cap using the 2.3m Bok telescope. The survey will cover about 5400 deg$^2$ in the $g$ and $r$ bands, and the expected 5$\sigma$ depths (corrected for the Galactic extinction) in the two bands are 24. Read More

The present study shows that the performance of CNN is not significantly different from the best classical methods and human doctors for classifying mediastinal lymph node metastasis of NSCLC from PET/CT images. Because CNN does not need tumor segmentation or feature calculation, it is more convenient and more objective than the classical methods. However, CNN does not make use of the import diagnostic features, which have been proved more discriminative than the texture features for classifying small-sized lymph nodes. Read More

We find no significant evidence for a gravitational-wave signal from any of these pulsars, but we are able to set the most constraining upper limits yet on their gravitational-wave amplitudes and ellipticities. For eight of these pulsars, our upper limits give bounds that are improvements over the indirect spin-down limit values. Read More

To cope with changing environments, recent developments in online learning have introduced the concepts of adaptive regret and dynamic regret independently. In this paper, we illustrate an intrinsic connection between these two concepts by showing that the dynamic regret can be expressed in terms of the adaptive regret and the functional variation. This observation implies that strongly adaptive algorithms can be directly leveraged to minimize the dynamic regret. Read More

In this work, a novel ring polymer representation for multi-level quantum system is proposed for thermal average calculations. The proposed presentation keeps the discreteness of the electronic states: besides position and momentum, each bead in the ring polymer is also characterized by a surface index indicating the electronic energy surface. A path integral molecular dynamics with surface hopping (PIMD-SH) dynamics is also developed to sample the equilibrium distribution of ring polymer configurational space. Read More

The construction of large-scale quantum networks relies on the development of practical quantum repeaters. Many approaches have been proposed with the goal of outperforming the direct transmission of photons, but most of them are inefficient or difficult to implement with current technology. Here, we present a protocol that uses a semi-hierarchical structure to improve the entanglement distribution rate while reducing the requirement of memory time to a range of tens of milliseconds. Electronic spin current is convertible to magnonic spin current via the creation or annihilation of thermal magnons at the interface of a magnetic insulator and a metal with a strong spin-orbital coupling. So far this phenomenon was evidenced in the linear regime. Based on analytical and fulledged numerical results for the non-linear regime we demonstrate that the generated thermal magnons or magnonic spin current in the insulator is asymmetric with respect to the charge current direction in the metal and exhibits a nonlinear dependence on the charge current density, which is explained by the tuning effect of the spin Hall torque and the magnetization damping. Are quantum states real? This most fundamental question in quantum mechanics has not yet been satisfactorily resolved, although its realistic interpretation seems to have been rejected by various delayed-choice experiments. Here, to address this long-standing issue, we present a quantum twisted double-slit experiment. By exploiting the subluminal feature of twisted photons, the real nature of a photon during its time in flight is revealed for the first time. Read More

Multi-photon entangled states play a crucial role in quantum information applications such as secure quantum communication, scalable computation, and high-precision quantum metrology. Quantum memory for entangled states is a key component of quantum repeaters, which are indispensable in realizing quantum communications. Storing a single photon or an entangled photon has been realized through different protocols. Read More

In this paper, granular segregation in a two-compartment cell in zero gravity is studied numerically by DEM simulation. In the simulation using a virtual window method we find a non-monotonic flux, a function which governs the segregation. A parameter is used to quantify the segregation. Read More

We study the integral Galactic extinction and reddening based on the galaxy catalog of the South Galactic Cap U-band Sky Survey (SCUSS), where $u$ band galaxy number counts and $u-r$ color distribution are used to derive the Galactic extinction and reddening respectively. We compare these independent statistical measurements with the reddening map of \citet{Schlegel1998}(SFD) and find that both the extinction and reddening from the number counts and color distribution are in good agreement with the SFD results at low extinction regions ($E(B-V)^{SFD}<0.12$ mag). For commercial one-sun solar modules, up to 80% of the incoming sunlight may be dissipated as heat, potentially raising the temperature 20 C - 30 C higher than the ambient. In the long term, extreme self-heating erodes efficiency and shortens lifetime, thereby dramatically reducing the total energy output. Therefore, it is critically important to develop effective and practical (and preferably passive) cooling methods to reduce operating temperature of PV modules. Read More

This contribution presents a novel bunch current measurement system based on an ultra-fast photodetector and a high-speed digitizer at Hefei Light Source II (HLS II). In order to achieve bunch-by-bunch resolution, the sampling rate of the system is nearly 225 GS/s via a dedicated equivalent sampling algorithm. According to preliminary tests of daily operation mode and single-bunch mode, the root-mean-square (rms) of current relative error distribution is 1. Read More
