In this paper, a novel spatial modulation aided non-orthogonal multiple access (SM-NOMA) system is proposed. We use mutual information (MI) to characterize the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) of the proposed SM-NOMA system. Due to the finite-alphabet space-domain inputs employed by SM, the expression of the corresponding MI lacks a closed-form formulation. Read More

In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of least energy solutions for the following biharmonic equations: $$\Delta^2 u+(\lambda V(x)-\delta)u=|u|^{p-2}u \quad in\quad \mathbb{R}^N$$ where $N\geq 5, 20$ is a parameter, $V(x)$ is a nonnegative potential function with nonempty zero sets $\mbox{int} V^{-1}(0)$, $0<\delta<\mu_0$ and $\mu_0$ is the principle eigenvalue of $\Delta^2$ in the zero sets $\mbox{int} V^{-1}(0)$ of $V(x)$. Here $\mbox{int} V^{-1}(0)$ denotes the interior part of the set $V^{-1}(0):=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^N: V(x)=0\}$. We prove that the above equation admits a least energy solution which is trapped near the zero sets $\mbox{int} V^{-1}(0)$ for $\lambda>0$ large. Read More

Recently deep neural networks (DNNs) have been used to learn speaker features. However, the quality of the learned features is not sufficiently good, so a complex back-end model, either neural or probabilistic, has to be used to address the residual uncertainty when applied to speaker verification, just as with raw features. This paper presents a convolutional time-delay deep neural network structure (CT-DNN) for speaker feature learning. Read More

Deep neural models, particularly the LSTM-RNN model, have shown great potential in language identification (LID). However, the phonetic information has been largely overlooked by most of existing neural LID methods, although this information has been used in the conventional phonetic LID systems with a great success. We present a phonetic temporal neural model for LID, which is an LSTM-RNN LID system but accepts phonetic features produced by a phone-discriminative DNN as the input, rather than raw acoustic features. Pure acoustic neural models, particularly the LSTM-RNN model, have shown great potential in language identification (LID). However, the phonetic information has been largely overlooked by most of existing neural LID models, although this information has been used in the conventional phonetic LID systems with a great success. We present a phone-aware neural LID architecture, which is a deep LSTM-RNN LID system but accepts output from an RNN-based ASR system. Read More

A significant excess of J/$\psi$ yield at very low transverse momentum ($p_T < 0.3$ GeV/c) was observed by the ALICE and STAR collaborations in peripheral A+A collisions, which points to evidence of coherent photoproduction of J/$\psi$ in violent hadronic interactions. Theoretically, the photoproduction of J$/\psi$ in hadronic collisions raises questions about how spectator and non-spectator nucleons participate in the coherent reaction. Read More

In granular physics experiments, it is a persistent challenge to obtain the boundary stress measurements necessary to provide full a rheological characterization of the dynamics. Here, we describe a new technique by which the outer boundary of a 2D Couette cell both confines the granular material and provides spatially- and temporally- resolved stress measurements. This key advance is enabled by desktop laser-cutting technology, which allows us to design and cut linearly-deformable walls with a specified spring constant. Read More

We have synthesized two iron fluo-arsenides $A$Ca$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $A$ = Rb and Cs, analogous to the newly discovered superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$. The quinary inorganic compounds crystallize in a body-centered tetragonal lattice with space group I4/mmm, which contain double Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating Ca$_2$F$_2$ layers. Our electrical and magnetic measurements on the polycrystalline samples demonstrate that the new materials undergo superconducting transitions at Tc = 30. Read More

We have synthesized 10 new iron oxyarsenides, K$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) and Cs$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho), with the aid of lattice-match [between $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs) and $Ln$FeAsO] approach. The resultant compounds possess hole-doped conducting double FeAs layers, [$A$Fe$_4$As$_4$]$^{2-}$, that are separated by the insulating [$Ln_2$O$_2$]$^{2+}$ slabs. Measurements of electrical resistivity and dc magnetic susceptibility demonstrate bulk superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 33 - 37 K. Read More

We have synthesized four iron-based oxyarsenide superconductors Rb$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho) resulting from the intergrowth of RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO. It is found that the lattice match between RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO is crucial for the phase formation. The structural intergrowth leads to double asymmetric Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating $Ln_2$O$_2$ slabs. Read More

Real-world artificial intelligence (AI) applications often require multiple agents to work in a collaborative effort. Efficient learning for intra-agent communication and coordination is an indispensable step towards general AI. In this paper, we take StarCraft combat game as the test scenario, where the task is to coordinate multiple agents as a team to defeat their enemies. Read More

Studies show that refining real-world categories into semantic subcategories contributes to better image modeling and classification. Previous image sub-categorization work relying on labeled images and WordNet's hierarchy is not only labor-intensive, but also restricted to classify images into NOUN subcategories. To tackle these problems, in this work, we exploit general corpus information to automatically select and subsequently classify web images into semantic rich (sub-)categories. Read More

One of the most efficient ways for a learning-based robotic arm to learn to process complex tasks as human, is to directly learn from observing how human complete those tasks, and then imitate. Our idea is based on success of Deep Q-Learning (DQN) algorithm according to reinforcement learning, and then extend to Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithm. We developed a learning-based method, combining modified DDPG and visual imitation network. Read More

We report on the evaluation of commercial electroless nickel phosphorus (NiP) coatings for ultracold neutron (UCN) transport and storage. The material potential of 50~$\mu$m thick NiP coatings on stainless steel and aluminum substrates was measured to be $V_F = 213(5.2)$~neV using the time-of-flight spectrometer ASTERIX at the Lujan Center. The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. Read More

The connective eccentricity index $\xi^{ce}=\sum^{}_{u\in V}\frac{d(u)}{\varepsilon(u)}$, where $\varepsilon(u)$ and $d(u)$ denote the eccentricity and the degree of the vertex $u$, respectively. In this paper, we first determine the extremal trees which minimize and maximize the connective eccentricity index among all trees with a given degree sequence, and then determine the extremal trees which minimize and maximize the connective eccentricity index among all trees with a given number of branching vertices. The WHM - type materials (W=Zr/Hf/La, H=Si/Ge/Sn/Sb, M=O/S/Se/Te) have been predicted to be a large pool of topological materials. These materials allow for fine tuning of spin-orbit coupling, lattice constant and structural dimensionality for various combinations of W, H and M elements, thus providing an excellent platform to study how these parameters' tuning affect topological semimetal state. In this work, we report the high field quantum oscillation studies on ZrGeM (M=S, Se, and Te). Read More

We present measurements of three-particle correlations for various harmonics in Au+Au collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The quantity $\langle\cos(m\phi_1+n\phi_2-(m+n)\phi_3)\rangle$ is evaluated as a function of $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}$, collision centrality, transverse momentum, $p_T$, pseudo-rapidity difference, $\Delta\eta$, and harmonics ($m$ and $n$). We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations $\langle \cos (m\phi_1 + n\phi_2 - (m+n) \phi_3)\rangle$ for charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We find evidence for correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. Read More

We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. Read More

We present analytical and numerical studies of models of supernova-remnant (SNR) blast waves expanding into uniform media and interacting with a denser cavity wall, in one spatial dimension. We predict the nonthermal emission from such blast waves: synchrotron emission at radio and X-ray energies, and bremsstrahlung, inverse-Compton emission (from cosmic-microwave-background seed photons, ICCMB), and emission from the decay of $\pi^0$ mesons produced in inelastic collisions between accelerated ions and thermal gas, at GeV and TeV energies. Accelerated particle spectra are assumed to be power-laws with exponential cutoffs at energies limited by the remnant age or (for electrons, if lower) by radiative losses. Read More

Most available studies of quasi-normal modes for Lifshitz black solutions are limited to the neutral scalar perturbations. In this paper, we investigate the wave dynamics of massive charged scalar perturbation in the background of $(3+1)$-dimensional charged dilaton Lifshitz black branes/holes. We disclose the dependence of the quasi-normal modes on the model parameters, such as the Lifshitz exponent $z$, the mass and charge of the scalar perturbation field and the charge of the Lifshitz configuration. We study the max-min fair allocation problem in which a set of $m$ indivisible items are to be distributed among $n$ agents such that the minimum utility among all agents is maximized. In the restricted setting, the utility of each item $j$ on agent $i$ is either $0$ or some non-negative weight $w_j$. For this setting, Asadpour et al. Read More

Labelled image datasets have played a critical role in high-level image understanding. However, the process of manual labelling is both time-consuming and labor intensive. To reduce the cost of manual labelling, there has been increased research interest in automatically constructing image datasets by exploiting web images. Read More

This paper is concerned with cones associated with isoparametric foliations in unit spheres. In particular, infinitely many new minimizing cones were constructed. They are cones over focal submanifolds of isoparametric foliations. Read More

We study the online submodular maximization problem with free disposal under a matroid constraint. Elements from some ground set arrive one by one in rounds, and the algorithm maintains a feasible set that is independent in the underlying matroid. In each round when a new element arrives, the algorithm may accept the new element into its feasible set and possibly remove elements from it, provided that the resulting set is still independent. We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for mid-rapidity di-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The di-jet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. $A_{LL}$ results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. The neutron lifetime is important in understanding the production of light nuclei in the first minutes after the big bang and it provides basic information on the charged weak current of the standard model of particle physics. Two different methods have been used to measure the neutron lifetime: disappearance measurements using bottled ultracold neutrons and decay rate measurements using neutron beams. The best measurements using these two techniques give results that differ by nearly 4 standard deviations. Read More

An isoparametric hypersurface in unit spheres has two focal submanifolds. Condition A plays a crucial role in the classification theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in [CCJ07], [Chi16] and [Miy13]. This paper determines $C_A$, the set of points with Condition A in focal submanifolds. Read More

We investigate the spacetime properties of BTZ black holes in Maxwell field and BornInfeld field and find rich properties in the spacetime structures when the model parameters vary. Employing the Landau-Lifshitz theory, we examine the thermodynamical phase transition in the charged BTZ holes. We further study the dynamical perturbation in the background of the charged BTZ black holes and find different properties of dynamical perturbations for the extreme and nonextreme charged BTZ black holes, which can serve as a new physical signal to indicate the phase transition between them. Research on multilingual speech recognition remains attractive yet challenging. Recent studies focus on learning shared structures under the multi-task paradigm, in particular a feature sharing structure. This approach has been found effective to improve performance on each individual language. Read More

$A_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) are the unique Cr-based ambient-pressure superconductors to date discovered by serendipity in 2015. The new superconducting family are structurally characterized by quasi one-dimensional [(Cr$_3$As$_3$)$^{2-}$]$_{\infty}$ double-walled subnanotubes, which exhibit peculiar properties that mostly point to unconventional superconductivity. In this conference paper, we first describe how the superconductors were discovered. Read More

We present the OC16-CE80 Chinese-English mixlingual speech database which was released as a main resource for training, development and test for the Chinese-English mixlingual speech recognition (MixASR-CHEN) challenge on O-COCOSDA 2016. This database consists of 80 hours of speech signals recorded from more than 1,400 speakers, where the utterances are in Chinese but each involves one or several English words. Based on the database and another two free data resources (THCHS30 and the CMU dictionary), a speech recognition (ASR) baseline was constructed with the deep neural network-hidden Markov model (DNN-HMM) hybrid system. Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have shown clear superiority in sequence modeling, particularly the ones with gated units, such as long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU). However, the dynamic properties behind the remarkable performance remain unclear in many applications, e.g. Read More

This paper presents a unified model to perform language and speaker recognition simultaneously and altogether. The model is based on a multi-task recurrent neural network where the output of one task is fed as the input of the other, leading to a collaborative learning framework that can improve both language and speaker recognition by borrowing information from each other. Our experiments demonstrated that the multi-task model outperforms the task-specific models on both tasks. Read More

Fraud (swindling money, property, or authority by fictionizing, counterfeiting, forging, or imitating things, or by feigning other persons privately) forms its threats against public security and network security. Anti-fraud is essentially the identification of a person or thing. In this paper, the authors first propose the concept of idology - a systematic and scientific study of identifications of persons and things, and give the definitions of a symmetric identity and an asymmetric identity. We report the first di-jet transverse momentum asymmetry measurements from Au+Au and p+p collisions at RHIC. The two highest-energy back-to-back jets reconstructed from fragments with transverse momenta above 2 GeV/c display a significantly stronger momentum imbalance in heavy-ion collisions than in the p+p reference. When re-examined with correlated soft particles included, we observe that these di-jets then exhibit a unique new feature -- momentum balance is restored to that observed in p+p for a jet resolution parameter of R=0. We investigated the physical properties of molecular clouds and star formation processes around infrared bubbles which are essentially expanding HII regions. We performed observations of 13 galactic infrared bubble fields containing 18 bubbles. Five molecular lines, 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), C18O(J=1-0), HCN (J=1-0), and HCO+ (J=1-0), were observed, and several publicly available surveys, GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, ATLASGAL, BGPS, VGPS, MAGPIS, and NVSS, were used for comparison. We present a measurement of the inclusive production of Upsilon mesons in U+U collisions at 193 GeV at mid-rapidity (|y| < 1). Previous studies in central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV show a suppression of Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) production relative to expectations from the Upsilon yield in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll), with an indication that the Upsilon(1S) state is also suppressed. The present measurement extends the number of participant nucleons in the collision (Npart) by 20% compared to Au+Au collisions, and allows us to study a system with higher energy density. Read More

We study the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of massless scalar matter field in asymptotic flat spacetime in $f(R)$ gravity. In the Einstein frame of $f(R)$ gravity, an additional scalar field arises due to the conformal transformation. We find that besides the usual competition between gravitational energy and kinetic energy in the process of gravitational collapse, the new scalar field brought by the conformal transformation adds one more competing force in the dynamical system. We present the first measurement of charge-dependent directed flow in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The results are presented as a function of the particle transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for different centralities. A finite difference between the directed flow of positive and negative charged particles is observed that qualitatively agrees with the expectations from the effects of the initial strong electric field between two colliding ions with different nuclear charges. In this paper we report on the laboratory experiment we settled in the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) to investigate the pyramid wavefront sensor (WFS) ability to measure the differential piston on a sparse aperture. The ultimate goal is to verify the ability of the pyramid WFS work in closed loop to perform the phasing of the primary mirrors of a sparse Fizeau imaging telescope. In the experiment we installed on the optical bench we performed various test checking the ability to flat the wave-front using a deformable mirror and to measure the signal of the differential piston on a two pupils setup. Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. Read More

We report synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties of a novel quinary compound RbGd$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$. The new iron oxyarsenide is isostructural to the fluo-arsenide KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$, both of which contain separate double Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are self hole-doped in the stoichiometric composition. Bulk superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 35 K is demonstrated by the measurements of electrical resistivity, dc magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity. Read More
