We consider a simple hierarchical renormalization model which was introduced in the study of depinning transition in presence of strong disorder, by Derrida and Retaux. Our interest is focused on the critical regime, for which we study the extinction probability, the first moment and the moment generating function. Several stronger assertions are stated as conjectures. Read More

We study a simple renormalisation recursion introduced by Derrida and Retaux [9] in the context of a physical problem: the depinning transition in presence of disorder. We find a new exponent for the free energy in the nearly supercritical regime. Read More

We address the problem of localisation of objects as bounding boxes in images with weak labels. This weakly supervised object localisation problem has been tackled in the past using discriminative models where each object class is localised independently from other classes. We propose a novel framework based on Bayesian joint topic modelling. Read More

We have shown recently how to calculate the large deviation function of the position $X_{\max}(t) $ of the right most particle of a branching Brownian motion at time $t$. This large deviation function exhibits a phase transition at a certain negative velocity. Here we extend this result to more general branching random walks and show that the probability distribution of $X_{\max}(t)$ has, asymptotically in time, a prefactor characterized by non trivial power law. Most existing approaches to training object detectors rely on fully supervised learning, which requires the tedious manual annotation of object location in a training set. Recently there has been an increasing interest in developing weakly supervised approach to detector training where the object location is not manually annotated but automatically determined based on binary (weak) labels indicating if a training image contains the object. This is a challenging problem because each image can contain many candidate object locations which partially overlaps the object of interest. Read More

We propose and fabricate a dual-emitter light-induced neuromorphic device composed of two light-induced devices with a common collector and base. Two InGaN multiple quantum well diodes (MQW-diodes) are used as the emitters to generate light, and one InGaN MQW-diode is used as the common collector to absorb the emitted light. When the presynaptic voltages are synchronously applied to the two emitters, the collector demonstrates an adding together of the excitatory post synaptic voltage (EPSV). Read More

Materials exhibiting large magnetoresistance may not only be of fundamental research interest, but also can lead to wide-ranging applications in magnetic sensors and switches. Here we demonstrate a large linear-in-field magnetoresistance, $\Delta \rho/\rho$ reaching as high as $\sim$600$\%$ at 2 K under a 9 Tesla field, in the tetragonal phase of a transiton-metal stannide $\beta$-RhSn$_4$. Detailed analyses show that its magnetic responses are overall inconsistent with the classical model based on the multiple electron scattering by mobility fluctuations in an inhomogenous conductor, but rather in line with the quantum effects due to the presence of Dirac-like dispersions in the electronic structure. Different linguistic perspectives causes many diverse segmentation criteria for Chinese word segmentation (CWS). Most existing methods focus on improve the performance for each single criterion. However, it is interesting to exploit these different criteria and mining their common underlying knowledge. Read More

In this paper, we explicitly extract and model jointly multi-view information from short utterances of the individuals, such as speaker identity and text contents. During the development stage, a deep neural network (DNN) that will be used to extract j-vector, is initialized and trained with the speech frames as input and the actual side information of the utterance as flat output block-wise one-hot labels. In the case of text dependent speaker verification, since there is no one-one mapping between input frames and text content labels, a syllable aware DNN is trained to provide compact lexical representation, the s-vector of the utterance. We show the localization phase transition and its effect on three dynamical processes for an extended Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper model with incommensurate on-site and hopping potentials. With the extended Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper model, we illustrate the localization transition of all eigenstates and fractal characters of the eigenenergy band versus system parameter. To examine the effect of localization transition to dynamical process, an adiabatic pumping of the edge states are examined. Read More

Existing RNN-based approaches for action recognition from depth sequences require either skeleton joints or hand-crafted depth features as inputs. An end-to-end manner, mapping from raw depth maps to action classes, is non-trivial to design due to the fact that: 1) single channel map lacks texture thus weakens the discriminative power; 2) relatively small set of depth training data. To address these challenges, we propose to learn an RNN driven by privileged information (PI) in three-steps: An encoder is pre-trained to learn a joint embedding of depth appearance and PI (i. We grow nearly freestanding single-layer 1T'-WTe2 on graphitized 6H-SiC(0001) by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), and characterize its electronic structure with scanning tunneling microscopy / spectroscopy (STM/STS). We demonstrate the existence of topological edge states at the periphery of single-layer WTe2 islands. Surprisingly, we also find a band gap in the bulk and the semiconducting behaviors of the single-layer WTe2 at low temperature, which is likely resulted from an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) transition. Magnetic flux structure on the surface of EuFe$_2$(As$\rm_{1-x}$P$\rm_x$)$_2$ single crystals with nearly optimal phosphorus doping levels $x=0.20$, and $x=0.21$ is studied by low-temperature magnetic force microscopy and decoration with ferromagnetic nanoparticles. Read More

In this paper, we investigate the quantum transfer for the system with three-level $\Lambda$-type structure, and construct a shortcut to the adiabatic passage via picture transformation to speed up the evolution. We can design the pulses directly without any additional couplings. Moreover, by choosing suitable control parameters, the Rabi frequencies of pulses can be expressed by the linear superpositions of Gaussian functions, which could be easily realized in experiments. The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. Read More

Revelation of chlorine and bromine isotope fractionation of halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) in electron impact (EI) ion source is crucial for compound-specific chlorine/bromine isotope analysis (CSIA-Cl/Br) using gas chromatography EI mass spectrometry (GC-EI-MS). This study systematically investigated chlorine/bromine isotope fractionation in EI ion source of HOCs including 12 organochlorines and 5 organobromines using GC-double focus magnetic-sector high resolution MS (GC-DFS-HRMS). In-source chlorine/bromine isotope fractionation behaviors of the HOCs were revealed with varied isotope fractionation patterns and extents depending on compounds. Read More

It has been proposed that interactions lead to ferromagnetism on a zigzag edge of a graphene sheet. While not yet directly studied experimentally, dramatically improving techniques for making and studying clean zigzag edges may soon make this possible. So far, most theoretical investigations of this claim have been based on mean field theories or more exact calculations using the Hubbard model. Read More

We present measurements of three-particle correlations for various harmonics in Au+Au collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The quantity $\langle\cos(m\phi_1+n\phi_2-(m+n)\phi_3)\rangle$ is evaluated as a function of $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}$, collision centrality, transverse momentum, $p_T$, pseudo-rapidity difference, $\Delta\eta$, and harmonics ($m$ and $n$). We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations $\langle \cos (m\phi_1 + n\phi_2 - (m+n) \phi_3)\rangle$ for charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We find evidence for correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. Read More

We study the dynamics of a pulse-gated semiconductor double quantum dot qubit. In our experiments, the qubit coherence times are relatively long, but the visibility of the quantum oscillations is low. We show that these observations are consistent with a theory that incorporates decoherence arising from charge noise that gives rise to detuning fluctuations of the double dot. Read More

We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. Read More

A highly integrated, high performance, and re-configurable device, which is designed for the Nitrogen-Vacancy center based quantum applications, is reported. The digital compartment of the device is fully implemented in a Field-Programmable-Gate- Array. The digital compartment is designed to manage the multi-function digital waveform generation and the Time-to-Digital-Convertors. Read More

By introducing loss to one sublattice of a dimer chain described by the extended Aubry-Andr\'e or Harper (AAH) model, we study the topological features including the edge states, spectrum and winding number of the chain. We find that the parameter region for the system to have real band-gap-closing is increased due to the loss, and the average displacement of the single excitation can still witness the topological features of the chain in the presence of loss. The robustness of the zero energy eigenstate against four kinds of disorders is also examined. Read More

The ideal strength is the maximum stress a material can withstand, and it is an important intrinsic property for structural applications. Griffith strength limit ~E/9 is the best known upper bound of this property for a material loaded in tension. Here we report that stanene, a recently fabricated two-dimensional material, could approach and possibly exceed this limit from a theoretical perspective. Read More

We study the ground state of spinless fermions living on a sphere across $p$-wave Feschbach resonances. By construsting a microscopic model of fermions on a general curved surface, we show that the Guassian curvature induces an emergent magnetic field coupled to the $p\pm ip$ order parameters. In the case of a sphere, the magnetic field corresponds to a Dirac monopole field, which causes topological defects in the superfluid ground state. Read More

Quantum Lyapunov control uses a feedback control methodology to determine control fields which are applied to control quantum systems in an open-loop way. In this work, we adopt two Lyapunov control schemes to prepare an edge state for a fermionic chain consisted of cold atoms loaded in an optical lattice. Such a chain can be described by the Harper model. Read More

With the assistance of a pair of Majorana fermions, we propose schemes to entangle two quantum dots by Lyapunov control in the charge and spin degrees of freedom. Four different schemes are considered, i.e. Read More

We investigate the influence of single-photon decay and initial states to the photon Schr\"odinger cat states generated in the double-photon driven-dissipative processes in one-mode and coupled two-mode cases. The impact of single-photon decay and initial state on the average photon number, parity, entropy and Wigner function are checked in one-mode case. In two-mode linear and nonlinear coupling cases, the response of entanglement and mutual information to the single-photon decay and initial state are examined. Read More

The fourfold spin-valley degenerate degrees of freedom in bulk graphene can support rich physics and novel applications associated with multicomponent quantum Hall effects and linear conductance filtering. In this work, we study how to break the spin-valley degeneracy of electron beams spatially. We propose a spin-valley beam splitter in a gated ferromagnetic/pristine/strained graphene structure. We investigate numerically that a finite Airy-Gaussian (AiG) beam varies its trajectory and shape in the defected photonic lattices. The propagation properties and beam self-bending are controlled with modulation depth and period of the photonic lattices, positive and negative defects, beam distribution factor and nonlinearity change. For positive defects, the pseudo-period oscillation and localization of the AiG beam may be formed under a certain condition, while the beam is diffused for negative defects. Read More

We report the first experimental evidence of Alfvenic ion temperature gradient (AITG) modes in HL-2A Ohmic plasmas. A group of oscillations with $f=15-40$ kHz and $n=3-6$ is detected by various diagnostics in high-density Ohmic regimes. They appear in the plasmas with peaked density profiles and weak magnetic shear, which indicates that corresponding instabilities are excited by pressure gradients. Read More

We investigate interactions by means of direct numerical simulations between two finite Airy-Gaussian (AiG) beams in different media with the defected photonic lattices in one transverse dimension. We discuss different lattice structures in which the beams with different intensities and phases are launched into the medium, but accelerate in opposite directions. During interactions we see the interference fringe, breathers and soliton pairs generated that are not accelerating. Read More

In this paper, we propose a protocol to prepare W states with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) by using dressed states. Through choosing a set of dressed states suitably, the protocol can be used to accelerate the adiabatic passages while additional couplings are unnecessary. Moreover, we can optimize the evolution of the system with the restraint to the populations of the intermediate states by choosing suitable controlled parameters. Read More

We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for mid-rapidity di-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The di-jet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. $A_{LL}$ results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. We calculate the finite temperature linear DC conductance of a generic single-impurity Anderson model containing an arbitrary number of Fermi liquid leads, and apply the formalism to closed and open long Aharonov-Bohm-Kondo (ABK) rings. We show that, as with the short ABK ring, there is a contribution to the conductance from the connected 4-point Green's function of the conduction electrons. At sufficiently low temperatures this contribution can be eliminated, and the conductance can be expressed as a linear function of the T-matrix of the screening channel. Read More

This paper studies the operation and scheduling of electric loads in micro-grid, a highly automated and distributed cyber-physical energy system (CPES). We establish rigorous mathematical expressions for electric loads and battery banks in the micro-grid by considering their characteristics and constraints. Based on these mathematical models, we propose a novel real-time scheduling analysis method for priority-based energy management in micro-grid, named Significant Moments Analysis (SMA). Read More

One major background in direct searches for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) comes from the deposition of radon progeny on detector surfaces. The most dangerous surface background is the $^{206}$Pb recoils produced by $^{210}$Po decays. In this letter, we report the first characterization of this background in liquid argon. Read More

Kerr nonlinear cavities displaying optical thresholding have been proposed for the realization of ultra-low power photonic logic gates. In the ultra-low photon number regime, corresponding to energy levels in the attojoule scale, quantum input-output models become important to study the effect of unavoidable quantum fluctuations on the performance of such logic gates. However, being a quantum anharmonic oscillator, a Kerr-cavity has an infinite dimensional Hilbert space spanned by the Fock states of the oscillator. Read More

We report the first di-jet transverse momentum asymmetry measurements from Au+Au and p+p collisions at RHIC. The two highest-energy back-to-back jets reconstructed from fragments with transverse momenta above 2 GeV/c display a significantly stronger momentum imbalance in heavy-ion collisions than in the p+p reference. When re-examined with correlated soft particles included, we observe that these di-jets then exhibit a unique new feature -- momentum balance is restored to that observed in p+p for a jet resolution parameter of R=0. We present a measurement of the inclusive production of Upsilon mesons in U+U collisions at 193 GeV at mid-rapidity (|y| < 1). Previous studies in central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV show a suppression of Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) production relative to expectations from the Upsilon yield in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll), with an indication that the Upsilon(1S) state is also suppressed. The present measurement extends the number of participant nucleons in the collision (Npart) by 20% compared to Au+Au collisions, and allows us to study a system with higher energy density. Read More

Super Efimov effect is a recently proposed three-body effect characterized by a double-exponential scaling, which has not been observed experimentally yet. Here, we present the general dynamic equations determining the cloud size of a scale invariant quantum gas in a time dependent harmonic trap. We show that a double-log periodicity as the hallmark of the super Efimov effect emerges when the trap frequency is decreased with a specially designed time-dependence. Read More

This paper considers the problems of unconstrained minimization of large scale smooth convex functions having block-coordinate-wise Lipschitz continuous gradients. The block coordinate descent (BCD) method are among the first optimization schemes suggested for solving such problems \cite{nesterov2012efficiency}. We obtain a new lower (to our best knowledge the lowest currently) bound that is $16p^3$ times smaller than the best known on the information-based complexity of BCD method based on an effective technique called Performance Estimation Problem (PEP) proposed by Drori and Teboulle \cite{drori2012performance} recently for analyzing the performance of first-order black box optimization methods. We present the first measurement of charge-dependent directed flow in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The results are presented as a function of the particle transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for different centralities. A finite difference between the directed flow of positive and negative charged particles is observed that qualitatively agrees with the expectations from the effects of the initial strong electric field between two colliding ions with different nuclear charges. CaFeAs2 is a parent compound of recently discovered 112-type iron-based superconductors. It is predicted to be a staggered intercalation compound that naturally integrates both quantum spin Hall insulating and superconducting layers and an ideal system for the realization of Majorana modes. We performed a systematical angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principle calculation study of the slightly electron-doped CaFeAs2. Read More
