Scrambling is a process by which the state of a quantum system is effectively randomized. Scrambling exhibits different complexities depending on the degree of randomness it produces. For example, the complete randomization of a pure quantum state (Haar scrambling) implies the inability to retrieve information of the initial state by measuring only parts of the system (Page/information scrambling), but the converse is not necessarily the case. In the evolutionary computation research community, the performance of most evolutionary algorithms (EAs) depends strongly on their implemented coordinate system. However, the commonly used coordinate system is fixed and not well suited for different function landscapes, EAs thus might not search efficiently. To overcome this shortcoming, in this paper we propose a framework, named ACoS, to adaptively tune the coordinate systems in EAs. Read More

A quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator is a novel two-dimensional quantum state of matter that features quantized Hall conductance in the absence of magnetic field, resulting from topologically protected dissipationless edge states that bridge the energy gap opened by band inversion and strong spin-orbit coupling. By investigating electronic structure of epitaxially grown monolayer 1T'-WTe2 using angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and first principle calculations, we observe clear signatures of the topological band inversion and the band gap opening, which are the hallmarks of a QSH state. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements further confirm the correct crystal structure and the existence of a bulk band gap, and provide evidence for a modified electronic structure near the edge that is consistent with the expectations for a QSH insulator. In this work, we present a method for targeted, maskless, and scalable fabrication of single silicon vacancy (VSi) defect arrays in silicon carbide (SiC) using focused ion beam. The resolution of implanted VSi defects is limited to a few tens of nanometers, defined by the diameter of the ion beam. Firstly, we studied the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum and optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) of the generated defect spin ensemble, confirming that the synthesized centers were in the desired defect state. The lowest-lying glueballs are investigated from $N_f=2$ QCD study on aniostropic lattices. Only the gluonic operators built from Wilson loops are involved in calculating the corresponding correlation functions. In the tensor channel, we obtain the ground state mass to be 2. Read More

Large-scale functional networks have been extensively studied using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging. However, the pattern, organization, and function of fine-scale network activity remain largely unknown. Here we characterized the spontaneously emerging visual cortical activity by applying independent component analysis to resting state fMRI signals exclusively within the visual cortex. Read More

The alignment of the frontier orbital energies of an adsorbed molecule with the substrate Fermi level at metal-organic interfaces is a fundamental observable of significant practical importance in nanoscience and beyond. Typical density functional theory calculations, especially those using local and semi-local functionals, often underestimate level alignment leading to inaccurate electronic structure and charge transport properties. In this work, we develop a new fully self-consistent predictive scheme to accurately compute level alignment at certain classes of complex heterogeneous molecule-metal interfaces based on optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid functionals. It has been found that contrarian oscillators usually take a negative role in the collective behaviors formed by conformist oscillators. However, experiments revealed that it is also possible to achieve a strong coherence even when there are contrarians in the system such as neuron networks with both excitable and inhibitory neurons. To understand the underlying mechanism of this abnormal phenomenon, we here consider a complex network of coupled Kuramoto oscillators with mixed positive and negative couplings and present an efficient approach, i. Photons propagating in Laguerre-Gaussian modes have characteristic orbital angular momentums, which are fundamental optical degrees of freedom. The orbital angular momentum of light has potential application in high capacity optical communication and even in quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally construct a ring cavity with 4 lenses and 4 mirrors that is completely degenerate for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. Read More

For TOF positron emission tomography (TOF PET) detectors, time-to-digital converters (TDCs) are essential to resolve the coincidence time of the photon pairs. Recently an efficient TDC structure called ring-oscillator-based (RO-based) Vernier TDC using carry chains was reported by our team [1]. The method is very promising due to its low linearity error and low resource cost. Read More

Recently, the explosive phase transitions, such as explosive percolation and explosive synchronization, have attracted extensive research interest. So far, most existing works investigate Kuramoto-type models, where only phase variables are involved. Here, we report the occurrence of explosive oscillation quenching in a system of coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators that incorporates both phase and amplitude dynamics. Read More

Many extensions of the SM contain hidden sectors which are uncharged under the SM gauge group. The simplest model with an additional $U(1)$ group predicts the existence of the new gauge boson, dark photon $Z_D$. In this work we consider single production of dark photon $Z_D$ at the LHC and study its discovery potential via the process $pp\rightarrow Z_D\gamma\rightarrow ll\gamma$. Read More

In this work, we study the dynamical robustness in a system consisting of both active and inactive oscillators. We analytically show that the dynamical robustness of such system is determined by the cross link density between active and inactive subpopulations, which depends on the specific process of inactivation. It is the multi-valued dependence of the cross link density on the control parameter, i. Read More

Global and partial synchronization are the two distinctive forms of synchronization in coupled oscillators and have been well studied in the past decades. Recent attention on synchronization is focused on the chimera state (CS) and explosive synchronization (ES), but little attention has been paid to their relationship. We here study this topic by presenting a model to bridge these two phenomena, which consists of two groups of coupled oscillators and its coupling strength is adaptively controlled by a local order parameter. The identification of the crystalline axis of anisotropic black phosphorus (BP) is key for the study of its physical properties and for its optical and electronic applications. Herein, we show that by applying an in-plane uniaxial strain and measuring the changes of Raman shifts, the crystalline axis of BP can be reliably determined. The strain effects on Raman shifts are angle-dependent, which can be expressed as a combination of Raman responses under zigzag and armchair strains. Read More

We investigate extrinsic wormhole-like defects that effectively increase the genus of space in lattice versions of multi-component fractional quantum Hall systems. Although the original band structure is distorted by these defects, leading to localized midgap states, we find that a new lowest flat band representing a higher genus system can be engineered by tuning local single-particle potentials. Remarkably, once local many-body interactions in this new band are switched on, we identify various Abelian and non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states, whose ground-state degeneracy increases with the number of defects, i. FPGA-based hardware accelerators for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have obtained great attentions due to their higher energy efficiency than GPUs. However, it is challenging for FPGA-based solutions to achieve a higher throughput than GPU counterparts. In this paper, we demonstrate that FPGA acceleration can be a superior solution in terms of both throughput and energy efficiency when a CNN is trained with binary constraints on weights and activations. What we eat is one of the most frequent and important health decisions we make in daily life, yet it remains notoriously difficult to capture and understand. Effective food journaling is thus a grand challenge in personal health informatics. In this paper we describe a system for food journaling called I Ate This, which is inspired by the Remote Food Photography Method (RFPM). Read More

We study the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Lambda_c^{+}\to p\eta$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to p\pi^{0}$ using $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\Lambda_{c}^{+}$ pairs produced by $e^+e^-$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 4.6\; GeV$. The data sample was collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 $pb^{-1}$. Read More

In order to accurately detect defects in patterned fabric images, a novel detection algorithm based on Gabor-HOG (GHOG) and low-rank decomposition is proposed in this paper. Defect-free pattern fabric images have the specified direction, while defects damage their regularity of direction. Therefore, a direction-aware descriptor is designed, denoted as GHOG, a combination of Gabor and HOG, which is extremely valuable for localizing the defect region. Read More

Based on variable components global optimization algorithm, we predict a stable two-dimensional (2D) phase of boron phosphide with 1:5 stoichiometry, i.e. boron pentaphosphide (BP_5) monolayer, which has a lower formation energy than that of the commonly believed graphitic phase (g-BP). Read More

How people look at visual information reveals fundamental information about themselves, their interests and their state of mind. While previous visual attention models output static 2-dimensional saliency maps, saccadic models aim to predict not only where observers look at but also how they move their eyes to explore the scene. Here we demonstrate that saccadic models are a flexible framework that can be tailored to emulate observer's viewing tendencies. Read More

We report a giant, ~22%, electroresistance modulation for a metallic alloy above room temperature. It is achieved by a small electric field of 2 kV/cm via piezoelectric strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling and the resulting magnetic phase transition in epitaxial FeRh/BaTiO3 heterostructures. This work presents detailed experimental evidence for an isothermal magnetic phase transition driven by tetragonality modulation in FeRh thin films, which is in contrast to the large volume expansion in the conventional temperature-driven magnetic phase transition in FeRh. Robust control design for quantum systems has been recognized as a key task in quantum information technology, molecular chemistry and atomic physics. In this paper, an improved differential evolution algorithm of msMS_DE is proposed to search robust fields for various quantum control problems. In msMS_DE, multiple samples are used for fitness evaluation and a mixed strategy is employed for mutation operation. Read More

The paper is dedicated to studying the problem of Poisson stability (in particular stationarity, periodicity, quasi-periodicity, Bohr almost periodicity, Bohr almost automorphy, Birkhoff recurrence, almost recurrence in the sense of Bebutov, Levitan almost periodicity, pseudo-periodicity, pseudo-recurrence, Poisson stability) of solutions for semi-linear stochastic equation $$ dx(t)=(Ax(t)+f(t,x(t)))dt +g(t,x(t))dW(t)\quad (*) $$ with exponentially stable linear operator $A$ and Poisson stable in time coefficients $f$ and $g$. We prove that if the functions $f$ and $g$ are appropriately "small", then equation $(*)$ admits at least one solution which has the same character of recurrence as the functions $f$ and $g$. We address the problem of synthesizing new video frames in an existing video, either in-between existing frames (interpolation), or subsequent to them (extrapolation). This problem is challenging because video appearance and motion can be highly complex. Traditional optical-flow-based solutions often fail where flow estimation is challenging, while newer neural-network-based methods that hallucinate pixel values directly often produce blurry results. The precise determination of the CKM matrix element $\left| V_{cb}\right|$ is important for carrying out tests of the flavour sector of the Standard Model. In this article we present a preliminary analysis of the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay mode and its charge conjugate, selected in events that contain a fully reconstructed $B$-meson, using 772 million $e^+ \, e^- \to \Upsilon(4S) \to B \bar B$ events recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. Read More

We report a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which does not experience any phase transition down to 50 mK, more than three orders lower than the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature ($\sim$ 200 K). A clear spin gap opening at low temperature is observed in the uniform spin susceptibility obtained from $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We observe, for the first time, the characteristic magnetic field dependence of the gap as expected for fractionalized spin-1/2 spinon excitations. Read More

We introduce a class of unbiased Monte Carlo estimators for the multivariate density of max-stable fields generated by Gaussian processes. Our estimators take advantage of recent results on exact simulation of max-stable fields combined with identities studied in the Malliavin calculus literature and ideas developed in the multilevel Monte Carlo literature. Our approach allows estimating multivariate densities of max-stable fields with precision $\varepsilon $ at a computational cost of order $O\left( \varepsilon ^{-2}\log \log \log \left( 1/\varepsilon \right) \right) $. Drawing on experimental data for baryon resonances, Hamiltonian effective field theory (HEFT) is used to predict the positions of the finite-volume energy levels to be observed in lattice QCD simulations. We have studied the low-lying baryons $N^*(1535)$, $N^*(1440)$, and $\Lambda(1405)$. In the initial analysis, the phenomenological parameters of the Hamiltonian model are constrained by experiment and the finite-volume eigenstate energies are a prediction of the model. Read More

We present an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} \pi^{+} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ based on a data sample of 2.93 ${\mbox{\,fb}^{-1}}$ acquired by the BESIII detector at the $\psi(3770)$ resonance. With a nearly background free sample of about 16000 events, we investigate the substructure of the decay and determine the relative fractions and the phases among the different intermediate processes. The structures, point defects and impacts of fission products for U3Si (\b{eta}-U3Si and {\gamma}-U3Si) and USi2 ({\alpha}-USi2 and \b{eta}-USi2) are studied by first-principles calculations. The lattice parameters of U3Si and USi2 are calculated and the stability of different types of point defects is predicted by their formation energies. The results show that silicon vacancies are more prone to be produced than uranium vacancies in \b{eta}-USi2 matrix, while uranium vacancies are the most stable defects of other three types of crystallographic structures. Using $4.479 \times 10^{8}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we search for the decays $\psi(3686) \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}\chi_{c0,1,2}$ and $\chi_{c0,1,2} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}J/\psi$. The decays $\psi(3686) \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}\chi_{c0,1,2}$ and $\chi_{c0,1,2} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}J/\psi$ are observed for the first time. Read More

DC microgrids are becoming popular as effective means to integrate various renewable energy resources. Constant power loads (CPLs) may yield instability due to the negative impedance characteristic. This paper analyzes the stability of the DC microgrid in presence of CPL. Read More

Many studies of synchronization properties of coupled oscillators, based on the classical Kuramoto approach, focus on ensembles coupled via a mean field. Here we introduce a setup of Kuramoto-type phase oscillators coupled via two mean fields. We derive stability properties of the incoherent state and find traveling wave solutions with different locking patterns; stability properties of these waves are found numerically. Read More

Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) represent a new state of quantum matter recently discovered that offers a platform for realizing many exotic physical phenomena. A TDS is characterized by the linear touching of bulk (conduction and valance) bands at discrete points in the momentum space (i.e. Read More

Chimera states have been studied in 1D arrays, and a variety of different chimera states have been found using different models. Research has recently been extended to 2D arrays but only to phase models of them. Here, we extend it to a nonphase model of 2D arrays of neurons and focus on the influence of nonlocal coupling. In order to understand the long-standing problem of the nature of glass states, we performed intensive simulations on the thermodynamic properties and potential energy surface of an ideal glass. We found that the atoms of an ideal glass manifest cooperative diffusion, and show clearly different behavior from the liquid state. By determining the potential energy surface, we demonstrated that the glass state has a flat potential landscape, which is the critical intrinsic feature of ideal glasses. Read More

Complex spatiotemporal dynamics have been a subject of recent experimental investigations in optical frequency comb microresonators and in driven fiber cavities with a Kerr-type media. We show that this complex behavior has a spatiotemporal chaotic nature. We determine numerically the Lyapunov spectra, allowing to characterize different dynamical behavior occurring in these simple devices. Read More

Nanoporous graphitic carbon membranes with defined chemical composition and pore architecture are novel nanomaterials that are actively pursued. Compared to easy-to-make porous carbon powders that dominate the porous carbon research and applications in energy generation/conversion and environmental remediation, porous carbon membranes are synthetically more challenging though rather appealing from an application perspective due to their structural integrity, interconnectivity and purity. Here we report a simple bottom-up approach to fabricate large-size, freestanding, porous carbon membranes that feature an unusual single-crystal-like graphitic order and hierarchical pore architecture plus favorable nitrogen doping. We prove the optimal strong convergence rate of a fully discrete scheme, based on a splitting approach, for a stochastic nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation. The main novelty of our method lies on the uniform a priori estimate and exponential integrability of a sequence of splitting processes which are used to approximate the solution of the stochastic NLS equation. We show that the splitting processes converge to the solution with strong order $1/2$. Read More

All next generation ground-based and space-based solar telescopes require a good quality assessment metric in order to evaluate their imaging performance. In this paper, a new image quality metric, the median filter gradient similarity (MFGS) is proposed for photospheric images. MFGS is a no-reference/blind objective image quality metric (IQM) by a measurement result between 0 and 1 and has been performed on short-exposure photospheric images captured by the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) of the Fuxian Solar Observatory and by the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) onboard the Hinode satellite, respectively. The anti-Stokes scattering and Stokes scattering in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) cascade have been researched by the Vlasov-Maxwell simulation. In the high-intensity laser-plasmas interaction, the stimulated anti-Stokes Brillouin scattering (SABS) will occur after the second stage SBS rescattering. The mechanism of SABS has been put forward to explain this phenomenon. Read More

Sequential estimation of the delay and Doppler parameters for sub-Nyquist radars by analog-to-information conversion (AIC) systems has received wide attention recently. However, the estimation methods reported are AIC-dependent and have poor performance for off-grid targets. This paper develops a general estimation scheme in the sense that it is applicable to all AICs regardless whether the targets are on or off the grids. Read More
