An edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{conflict-free connected} if, between each pair of distinct vertices, there exists a path containing a color used on exactly one of its edges. The \emph{conflict-free connection number} of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $cfc(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ conflict-free connected. In this paper, we determine all trees $T$ of order $n$ for which $cfc(T)=n-t$, where $t\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2t+2 $. Read More

Understanding and controlling the properties and dynamics of topological defects is a lasting challenge in the study of two-dimensional materials, and is crucial to achieve high-quality films required for technological applications. Here grain boundary structures, energies, and dynamics of binary two-dimensional materials are investigated through the development of a phase field crystal model that is parameterized to match the ordering, symmetry, energy and length scales of hexagonal boron nitride. Our studies reveal some new dislocation core structures for various symmetrically and asymmetrically tilted grain boundaries, in addition to those obtained in previous experiments and first-principles calculations. We present first evidence for the process $e^+e^-\to \gamma\eta_c(1S)$ at six center-of-mass energies between 4.01 and 4.60~GeV using data collected by the BESIII experiment operating at BEPCII. Read More

We show that the topological index of a wavefunction, computed in the space of twisted boundary phases, is preserved under Hilbert space truncation, provided the truncated state remains normalizable. If truncation affects the boundary condition of the resulting state, the invariant index may acquire a different physical interpretation. If the index is symmetry protected, the truncation should preserve the protecting symmetry. Read More

Multi-Weyl semimetals are a kind of topological phase of matter with discrete Weyl nodes characterized by multiple monopole charges, in which the chiral anomaly, the anomalous nonconservation of an axial current, occurs in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. Electronic transport properties related to the chiral anomaly in the presence of both electromagnetic fields and axial electromagnetic fields in multi-Weyl semimetals are systematically studied. It has been found that the anomalous Hall conductivity has a modification linear in the axial vector potential from inhomogeneous strains. Read More

In this paper, we consider higher order paired symmetric tensors and strongly paired symmetric tensors. Elasticity tensors and higher order elasticity tensors in solid mechanics are strongly paired symmetric tensors. A (strongly) paired symmetric tensor is said to be positive definite if the homogeneous polynomial defined by it is positive definite. Read More

How the solar corona is heated to high temperatures remains an unsolved mystery in solar physics. In the present study we analyse observations of 50 whole active-region loops taken with the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board the Hinode satellite. Eleven loops were classified as cool (<1 MK) and 39 as warm (1-2 MK) loops. Read More

Patch-level image representation is very important for object classification and detection, since it is robust to spatial transformation, scale variation, and cluttered background. Many existing methods usually require fine-grained supervisions (e.g. Read More

In this paper, we reanalyze the $I=0$ scalar channel with the improved Monte-Carlo based QCD sum rules, which combines the rigorous H\"older-inequality-determined sum rule window and a two Breit-Wigner type resonances parametrization for the phenomenological spectral density that satisfies the the low-energy theorem for the scalar form factor. Considering the uncertainties of the QCD parameters and the experimental masses and widths of the scalar resonances $\sigma$ and $f_0(980)$, we obtain a prediction for light quark mass $m_q(2\,\textrm{GeV})$ = $\frac{1}{2}(m_u(2\,\textrm{GeV})$ + $m_d(2\,\textrm{GeV}))$ = $4.7^{+0. We consider the communication complexity of finding an approximate maximum matching in a graph in a multi-party message-passing communication model. The maximum matching problem is one of the most fundamental graph combinatorial problems, with a variety of applications. The input to the problem is a graph $G$ that has $n$ vertices and the set of edges partitioned over $k$ sites, and an approximation ratio parameter $\alpha$. Read More

Following the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle, transient dynamics of a one-dimensional Holstein polaron with diagonal and off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling in an external electric field is studied by employing the multi-D$_2$ {\it Ansatz}, also known as a superposition of the usual Davydov D$_2$ trial states. Resultant polaron dynamics has significantly enhanced accuracy, and is in perfect agreement with that derived from the hierarchy equations of motion method. Starting from an initial broad wave packet, the exciton undergoes typical Bloch oscillations. Read More

Treated traditionally by the Ehrenfest approximation, dynamics of a one-dimensional molecular crystal model with off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling is investigated in this work using the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle with the multi-D$_2$ {\it Ansatz}. It is shown that the Ehrenfest method is equivalent to our variational method with the single D$_2$ {\it Ansatz}, and with the multi-D$_2$ {\it Ansatz}, the accuracy of our simulated dynamics is significantly enhanced in comparison with the semi-classical Ehrenfest dynamics. The multi-D$_2$ {\it Ansatz} is able to capture numerically accurate exciton momentum probability and help clarify the relation between the exciton momentum redistribution and the exciton energy relaxation. We propose a novel fifth-generation (5G) rapid prototyping (RaPro) system architecture by combining FPGA-privileged modules from a software defined radio (or FPGA-coprocessor) and high-level programming language for advanced algorithms from multi-core general purpose processors. The proposed system architecture exhibits excellent flexibility and scalability in the development of a 5G prototyping system. As a proof of concept, a multi-user full-dimension multiple-input and multiple-output system is established based on the proposed architecture. Read More

Robust optimization (RO) is a common approach to tractably obtain safeguarding solutions for optimization problems with uncertain constraints. In this paper, we study a statistical framework to integrate data into RO, based on learning a prediction set using (combinations of) geometric shapes that are compatible with established RO tools, and a simple data-splitting validation step that achieves finite-sample nonparametric statistical guarantees on feasibility. Compared with previous data-driven approaches, our required sample size to achieve feasibility at a given confidence level is independent of the dimensions of both the decision space and the probability space governing the stochasticity. Large amount of image denoising literature focuses on single channel images and often experimentally validates the proposed methods on tens of images at most. In this paper, we investigate the interaction between denoising and classification on large scale dataset. Inspired by classification models, we propose a novel deep learning architecture for color (multichannel) image denoising and report on thousands of images from ImageNet dataset as well as commonly used imagery. In spite of Anderson's theorem, disorder is known to affect superconductivity in conventional s-wave superconductors. In most superconductors, the degree of disorder is fixed during sample preparation. Here we report measurements of the superconducting properties of the two-dimensional gas that forms at the interface between LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) in the (111) crystal orientation, a system that permits \emph{in situ} tuning of carrier density and disorder by means of a back gate voltage $V_g$. We present a new upper limit on CMB circular polarization from the 2015 flight of SPIDER, a balloon-borne telescope designed to search for $B$-mode linear polarization from cosmic inflation. Although the level of circular polarization in the CMB is predicted to be very small, experimental limits provide a valuable test of the underlying models. By exploiting the non-zero circular-to-linear polarization coupling of the HWP polarization modulators, data from SPIDER's 2015 Antarctic flight provides a constraint on Stokes $V$ at 95 and 150 GHz from $33<\ell<307$. An edge-colored graph $G$ is $k$-color connected if, between each pair of vertices, there exists a path using at least $k$ different colors. The $k$-color connection number of $G$, denoted by $cc_{k}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to color the edges of $G$ so that $G$ is $k$-color connected. First, we prove that let $H$ be a subdivision of a connected graph $G$, then $cc_{k}(H)\leq cc_{k}(G)$. Read More

We propose a multi-objective framework to learn both secondary targets not directly related to the intended task of speech enhancement (SE) and the primary target of the clean log-power spectra (LPS) features to be used directly for constructing the enhanced speech signals. In deep neural network (DNN) based SE we introduce an auxiliary structure to learn secondary continuous features, such as mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), and categorical information, such as the ideal binary mask (IBM), and integrate it into the original DNN architecture for joint optimization of all the parameters. This joint estimation scheme imposes additional constraints not available in the direct prediction of LPS, and potentially improves the learning of the primary target. Read More

The search for new superconducting compounds with higher critical temperatures $T_{c}^{\prime}$s has long been the very heart of scientific research on superconductivity. It took 75 years for scientists to push the $T_{c}$ above liquid nitrogen boiling temperature since the discovery of superconductivity. So far, the record high $T_{c}$ of about 130 K at atmosphere pressure was reported in some multilayer Hg(Tl)-Ba-Ca-Cu-O compounds. Read More

Let $\Lambda$ be a finite dimensional string algebra over a field with the quiver $Q$ such that the underlying graph of $Q$ is a tree, and let $|\Det(\Lambda)|$ be the number of the minimal right determiners of all irreducible morphisms between indecomposable left $\Lambda$-modules. Then we have $$|\Det(\Lambda)|=2n-p-q-1,$$ where $n$ is the number of vertices in $Q$, $p=|\{i\mid i$ is a source in $Q$ with two neighbours$\}|$ and $q$ is the number of non-zero vertex ideals of $\Lambda$. Motivated by the exploration of bipolaronic superconductivity in conducting polymers, we examine such a possibility in the starting member of $p$-oligophenyls $-$ $p$-terphenyl with three phenyl rings, belonging to the family of conducting polymer polyparaphenylene. The formation of bipolarons is identified from Raman scattering measurements. Both the dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that $p$-terphenyl is a type-II superconductor with a critical temperature of 7. Read More

Organic compounds are promising candidates to exhibit high temperature or room temperature superconductivity. However, the critical temperatures of organic superconductors are bounded to 38 K. By doping potassium into $p$-terphenyl consisting of C and H elements with three phenyl rings connected by single C-C bond in para position, we find that this material can have a superconducting phase with the critical temperature of 43 K. Structured output support vector machine (SVM) based tracking algorithms have shown favorable performance recently. Nonetheless, the time-consuming candidate sampling and complex optimization limit their real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a novel large margin object tracking method which absorbs the strong discriminative ability from structured output SVM and speeds up by the correlation filter algorithm significantly. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have valley degree of freedom, which features optical selection rule and spin-valley locking, making them promising for valleytronics devices and quantum computation. For either application, a long valley polarization lifetime is crucial. Previous results showed that it is around picosecond in monolayer excitons, nanosecond for electrons, holes or local excitons and tens of nanosecond for interlayer excitons. Read More

In this article we study diophantine approximation and local distribution of a rational point on a toric surface obtained by a blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. It turns out that outside a Zariski closed subset the best approximations are done through a family of nodal curves. Hence the investigation is led to the question of local distribution of a quadratic point on the projective line. Read More

Robotic failure is all too common in unstructured robot tasks. Despite well-designed controllers, robots often fail due to unexpected events. How do robots measure unexpected events? Many do not. Read More

Recent advances in deep learning, especially deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have led to significant improvement over previous semantic segmentation systems. Here we show how to improve pixel-wise semantic segmentation by manipulating convolution-related operations that are better for practical use. First, we implement dense upsampling convolution (DUC) to generate pixel-level prediction, which is able to capture and decode more detailed information that is generally missing in bilinear upsampling. Deep learning approaches have been widely used in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and they have achieved a significant accuracy improvement. Especially, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been revisited in ASR recently. However, most CNNs used in existing work have less than 10 layers which may not be deep enough to capture all human speech signal information. Read More

We propose a method based on the slice energy spread modulation to generate strong subpicoseond density bunching in high-intensity relativistic electron beams. A laser pulse with periodic intensity envelope is used to modulate the slice energy spread of the electron beam, which can then be converted into density modulation after a dispersive section. It is found that the double-horn slice energy distribution of the electron beam induced by the laser modulation is very effective to increase the density bunching. Read More

By developing a molecular dynamics model of bacterial chemotaxis, we present the first investigation of tracer statistics in bacterial suspensions where chemotactic effects are considered. We demonstrate that the non-Gaussian statistics of full-coated tracer arises from the athermal bacterial noise. Moreover, Janus (half-coated) tracer performs a composite random walk combining power-law-tail distributed L\'{e}vy flights with Brownian jiggling at low coating concentration, but turns to an enhanced directional transport (EDT) when coating concentration is high. We find that the quantum simplicity constraint is realized as the 2d surface defect in SL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) Chern-Simons theory in the construction of spinfoam amplitudes. By this realization of simplicity constraint in Chern-Simons theory, we are able to construct the new spinfoam amplitude with cosmological constant for arbitrary simplicial complex (with many 4-simplices). We present an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} \pi^{+} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ based on a data sample of 2.93 ${\mbox{\,fb}^{-1}}$ acquired by the BESIII detector at the $\psi(3770)$ resonance. With a nearly background free sample of about 16000 events, we investigate the substructure of the decay and determine the relative fractions and the phases among the different intermediate processes. As a natural extension of compressive sensing and the requirement of some practical problems, Phaseless Compressed Sensing (PCS) has been introduced and studied recently. Many theoretical results have been obtained for PCS with the aid of its convex relaxation. Motivated by successful applications of nonconvex relaxed methods for solving compressive sensing, in this paper, we try to investigate PCS via its nonconvex relaxation. Read More

The process to certify highly Automated Vehicles has not yet been defined by any country in the world. Currently, companies test Automated Vehicles on public roads, which is time-consuming and inefficient. We proposed the Accelerated Evaluation concept, which uses a modified statistics of the surrounding vehicles and the Importance Sampling theory to reduce the evaluation time by several orders of magnitude, while ensuring the evaluation results are statistically accurate. In this paper, we introduce a class of variational inequalities, where the involved function is the sum of an arbitrary given vector and a homogeneous polynomial defined by a tensor; and we call it the tensor variational inequality (TVI). The TVI is a natural extension of the affine variational inequality and the tensor complementarity problem. We show that a class of multi-person noncooperative games can be formulated as a TVI.
