We report an investigation of the superconducting states of $\mathrm{Lu}_3\mathrm{Os}_4\mathrm{Ge}_{13}$ and $\mathrm{Y}_3\mathrm{Ru}_4\mathrm{Ge}_{13}$ single crystals by measurements of the electrical resistivity, ac susceptibility and London penetration depth. The analysis of the penetration depth and the derived superfluid density indicates the presence of nodeless superconductivity and suggest that there are multiple superconducting gaps in both materials. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements of both compounds display the peak effect in the low temperature region of the $H-T$ phase diagram. Read More

We generalize the notions of singularities and ordinary points from linear ordinary differential equations to D-finite systems. Ordinary points of a D-finite system are characterized in terms of its formal power series solutions. We also show that apparent singularities can be removed like in the univariate case by adding suitable additional solutions to the system at hand. Read More

It came to my attention after posting this paper that Yu Ding has proved the same result before. I would like to apologize to Yu Ding for the appearance of this paper. Read More

Graphitic nitrogen-doped graphene is an excellent platform to study scattering processes of massless Dirac fermions by charged impurities, in which high mobility can be preserved due to the absence of lattice defects through direct substitution of carbon atoms in the graphene lattice by nitrogen atoms. In this work, we report on electrical and magnetotransport measurements of high-quality graphitic nitrogen-doped graphene. We show that the substitutional nitrogen dopants in graphene introduce atomically sharp scatters for electrons but long-range Coulomb scatters for holes and, thus, graphitic nitrogen-doped graphene exhibits clear electron-hole asymmetry in transport properties. The conversion of other forms of energy into mechanical work through the geometrical extension and retraction of nanomaterials has a wide variety of potential applications, including for mimicking biomotors. Here, using molecular dynamic simulations, we demonstrate that there exists an intrinsic energy conversion mechanism between thermal energy and mechanical work in the telescopic motions of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). A DWCNT can inherently convert heat into mechanical work in its telescopic extension process, while convert mechanical energy into heat in its telescopic retraction process. Read More

The recent detection of fullerene (C$_{60}$) in space and the positive assignment of five diffuse interstellar bands to C$_{60}^+$ reinforce the notion that fullerene-related compounds can be efficiently formed in circumstellar envelopes and be present in significant quantities in the interstellar medium. Experimental studies have shown that C$_{60}$ can be readily hydrogenated, raising the possibility that hydrogenated fullerenes (or fulleranes, C$_{60}$H$_m$, $m=1-60$) may be abundant in space. In this paper, we present theoretical studies of the vibrational modes of isomers of C$_{60}$H$_m$. Read More

The XENON1T dark matter experiment aims to detect Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) through low-energy interactions with xenon atoms. To detect such a rare event necessitates the use of radiopure materials to minimize the number of background events within the expected WIMP signal region. In this paper we report the results of an extensive material radioassay campaign for the XENON1T experiment. Read More

Experimental realizations of topological quantum systems and detections of topological invariants in ultracold atomic systems have been a greatly attractive topic. In this work, we propose a scheme to realize topologically different phases in a bichromatic optical lattice subjected to a periodically driven tilt harmonic oscillation, which can be effectively described by a superlattice model with tunable long-range hopping processes. By tuning the ratio of nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping amplitudes, the system undergoes a topological phase transition accompanied by the change of topological numbers of the lowest band from -1 to 2. A path in a vertex-colored graph is a {\it vertex-proper path} if any two internal adjacent vertices differ in color. A vertex-colored graph is {\it proper vertex $k$-connected} if any two vertices of the graph are connected by $k$ disjoint vertex-proper paths of the graph. For a $k$-connected graph $G$, the {\it proper vertex $k$-connection number} of $G$, denoted by $pvc_{k}(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors required to make $G$ proper vertex $k$-connected. In this paper, we address a major challenge confronting the Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) utilizing a tiered storage architecture - how to maximize their overall profit over a variety of storage tiers that offer distinct characteristics, as well as file placement and access request scheduling policies. Private information retrieval (PIR) gets renewed attentions in recent years due to its information-theoretic reformulation and its application in distributed storage system (DSS). We study a variant of the information-theoretic and DSS-oriented PIR problem which considers retrieving several files simultaneously, known as the multi-file PIR. In this paper, we give an upper bound of the multi-file PIR capacity (the maximal number of bits privately retrieved per one bit of downloaded bit) for the degenerating cases. Read More

Given a projective hyperkahler manifold with a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration, we prove that hyperkahler metrics with volume of the torus fibers shrinking to zero collapse in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense (and smoothly away from the singular fibers) to a compact metric space which is a half-dimensional special Kahler manifold outside a singular set of real Hausdorff codimension 2. Effects of nanostructured defects of copper solid surface on the bubble growth in liquid argon have been investigated through a hybrid atomistic-continuum method. The same solid surfaces with five different nanostructures, namely, wedge defect, deep rectangular defect (R-I), shallow rectangular defect (R-II), small rectangular defect (R-III) and no defect, have been modeled at molecular level. The liquid argon is placed on top of the hot solid copper with superheat of 30 K after equilibration is achieved with CFD-MD coupled simulation. Read More

We report on a measurement of the flavor-specific $B^{0}_{s}$ lifetime and of the $D^{-}_{s}$ lifetime using proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Approximately 407 000 $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{(*)-}_{s} \mu^{+}\nu_\mu $ decays are partially reconstructed in the $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{-}\mu^{+}$ final state. Read More

An urban traffic system is a heterogeneous system, which consists of different types of intersections and dynamics. In this paper, we focus on one type of heterogeneous traffic network, which consists of signalized junctions and non-signalized ones, where in the latter case vehicles usually follow the first-in-first-out principle. We propose a novel model describing the dynamic behaviors of such a system and validate it via simulations in VISSIM. Read More

In this paper we find an upper bound for the probability that a $3$ dimensional simple random walk covers each point in a nearest neighbor path connecting 0 and the boundary of an $L_1$ ball of radius $N$. For $d\ge 4$, it has been shown in [5] that such probability decays exponentially with respect to $N$. For $d=3$, however, the same technique does not apply, and in this paper we obtain a slightly weaker upper bound: $\forall \varepsilon>0,\exists c_\varepsilon>0,$ $$P\left({\rm Trace}(\mathcal{P})\subseteq {\rm Trace}\big(\{X_n\}_{n=0}^\infty\big) \right)\le \exp\left(-c_\varepsilon N\log^{-(1+\varepsilon)}(N)\right). Using a data set of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. Read More

We realize the weak momentum relaxation in Rindler fluid, which lives on the time-like cutoff surface in an accelerating frame of flat spacetime. The translational invariance is broken by massless scalar fields with weak strength. The momentum relaxation rate and heat conductivity of Rinlder fluid are obtained, with higher order correction in terms of the strength of momentum relaxation. Read More

China has encountered serious land loss problems along with urban expansion due to rapid urbanization. Without considering complicated spatiotemporal heterogeneity, previous studies could not extract urban transition rules at large scale well. This study proposed a random forest algorithm (RFA) based cellular automata (CA) model to simulate China's urban expansion and farmland loss in a fine scale from 2000 to 2030. Read More

Singlish can be interesting to the ACL community both linguistically as a major creole based on English, and computationally for information extraction and sentiment analysis of regional social media. We investigate dependency parsing of Singlish by constructing a dependency treebank under the Universal Dependencies scheme, and then training a neural network model by integrating English syntactic knowledge into a state-of-the-art parser trained on the Singlish treebank. Results show that English knowledge can lead to 25% relative error reduction, resulting in a parser of 84. Read More

In this work, we investigate the use of nanoscale polarization engineering to achieve efficient hole injection from metals to ultra-wide band gap AlGaN, and we show that UV-reflective aluminum (Al) layers can be used for hole injection into p-AlGaN. The dependence of tunneling on the work function of the metal was investigated, and it was found that highly reflective Al metal layers can enable efficient hole injection into p-AlGaN, despite the relatively low work function of Al. Efficient tunneling hole injection was confirmed by light emission at 326 nm with on-wafer peak external quantum efficiency and wall-plug efficiency of 2. Read More

A path in a vertex-colored graph is called \emph{conflict free} if there is a color used on exactly one of its vertices. A vertex-colored graph is said to be \emph{conflict-free vertex-connected} if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a conflict-free path. This paper investigates the question: For a connected graph $G$, what is the smallest number of colors needed in a vertex-coloring of $G$ in order to make $G$ conflict-free vertex-connected. Side-channel risks of Intel's SGX have recently attracted great attention. Under the spotlight is the newly discovered page-fault attack, in which an OS-level adversary induces page faults to observe the page-level access patterns of a protected process running in an SGX enclave. With almost all proposed defense focusing on this attack, little is known about whether such efforts indeed raises the bar for the adversary, whether a simple variation of the attack renders all protection ineffective, not to mention an in-depth understanding of other attack surfaces in the SGX system. A search is presented for long-lived particles with a mass between 25 and 50 GeV/$c^2$ and a lifetime between 2 and 500 ps, using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The particles are assumed to be pair-produced in the decay of a 125 GeV/$c^2$ Standard-Model-like Higgs boson. Read More

Recurrent feedback connections in the mammalian visual system have been hypothesized to play a role in synthesizing input in the theoretical framework of analysis by synthesis. The comparison of internally synthesized representation with that of the input provides a validation mechanism during perceptual inference and learning. Inspired by these ideas, we proposed that the synthesis machinery can compose new, unobserved images by imagination to train the network itself so as to increase the robustness of the system in novel scenarios. The device-independent approach to physics is one where conclusions are drawn directly and solely from the observed correlations between measurement outcomes. In quantum information, this approach allows one to make strong statements about the properties of the underlying devices via the observation of Bell-inequality-violating correlations. However, since one can only perform a finite number of experimental trials, an important gap remains between the many theoretical tools developed for such purposes and the experimentally obtained raw data. Several recent works have empirically observed that Convolutional Neural Nets (CNNs) are (approximately) invertible. To understand this approximate invertibility phenomenon and how to leverage it more effectively, we focus on a theoretical explanation and develop a mathematical model of sparse signal recovery that is consistent with CNNs with random weights. We give an exact connection to a particular model of model-based compressive sensing (and its recovery algorithms) and random-weight CNNs. Read More

Chaotic dynamics in quantum many-body systems scrambles local information so that at late times it can no longer be accessed locally. This is reflected quantitatively in the out-of-time-ordered correlator of local operators which is expected to decay to zero with time. However, for systems of finite size, out-of-time-ordered correlators do not decay exactly to zero and we show in this paper that the residue value can provide useful insights into the chaotic dynamics. A scenario has recently been reported in which in order to stabilize complete synchronization of an oscillator network---a symmetric state---the symmetry of the system itself has to be broken by making the oscillators nonidentical. But how often does such behavior---which we term asymmetry-induced synchronization (AISync)---occur in oscillator networks? Here we present the first general scheme for constructing AISync systems and demonstrate that this behavior is the norm rather than the exception in a wide class of physical systems that can be seen as multilayer networks. Since a symmetric network in complete synchrony is the basic building block of cluster synchronization in more general networks, AISync should be common also in facilitating cluster synchronization by breaking the symmetry of the cluster subnetworks. We establish an isomorphism between certain complex-valued and vector-valued modular form spaces of half-integral weight, generalizing the well-known isomorphism between modular forms for $\Gamma_0(4)$ with Kohnen's plus condition and modular forms for the Weil representation associated to the discriminant form for the lattice with Gram matrix $(2)$. With such an isomorphism, we prove the Zagier duality and write down the Borcherds lifts explicitly. Read More

Consider a full-duplex (FD) bidirectional secure communication system, where two communication nodes, named Alice and Bob, simultaneously transmit and receive confidential information from each other, and an eavesdropper, named Eve, overhears the transmissions. Our goal is to maximize the sum secrecy rate (SSR) of the bidirectional transmissions by optimizing the transmit covariance matrices at Alice and Bob. To tackle this SSR maximization (SSRM) problem, we develop an alternating difference-of-concave (ADC) programming approach to alternately optimize the transmit covariance matrices at Alice and Bob. In our previous work we showed that for an ancient solution to the Ricci flow with nonnegative curvature operator, assuming bounded geometry on one time slice, bounded entropy implies noncollapsing on all scales. In this paper we prove the other implication, that for an ancient solution with bounded nonnegative curvature operator, noncollapsing implies bounded entropy. Hence we prove Perelman's assertion under the assumption of bounded geometry on one time slice. Read More

Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites are low-cost solution-processable solar cell materials with photovoltaic properties that rival those of crystalline silicon. The perovskite films are typically sandwiched between thin layers of hole and electron transport materials, which efficiently extract photogenerated charges. This affords high-energy conversion efficiencies but results in significant performance and fabrication challenges. Read More

A test of lepton universality, performed by measuring the ratio of the branching fractions of the $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0}\textit{\mu}^{+}\textit{\mu}^{-}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0}e^{+}e^{-}$ decays, $R_{K^{*0}}$, is presented. The $K^{*0}$ meson is reconstructed in the final state $K^{+}\pi^{-}$, which is required to have an invariant mass within 100$\mathrm{\,MeV/}c^2$ of the known $K^{*}(892)^{0}$ mass. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 3$\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8$\mathrm{\,TeV}$. This paper presents a pedestrian hopping model and a traffic signal scheduling strategy with consideration of both pedestrians and vehicles in the urban traffic system. Firstly, a novel mathematical model consisting of several logic constraints is proposed to describe the pedestrian flow in the urban traffic network and its dynamics are captured by the hopping rule, which depicts the changing capacity of each time interval from one waiting zone to another. Based on the hopping mechanism, the pedestrian traffic light scheduling problems are formulated by two different performance standards: pedestrian delay and pedestrian unhappiness. Read More

Blood pressure (BP) has been a difficult vascular risk factor to measure continuously and precisely with a small cuffless electronic gadget. In the meantime, it is the key biomarker for control of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the leading cause of death worldwide. In this work, we addressed the current limitation of BP prediction models by formulating BP extraction as a temporal sequence prediction problem in which both the input and target are sequential data. Impervious surface area is a direct consequence of the urbanization, which also plays an important role in urban planning and environmental management. With the rapidly technical development of remote sensing, monitoring urban impervious surface via high spatial resolution (HSR) images has attracted unprecedented attention recently. Traditional multi-classes models are inefficient for impervious surface extraction because it requires labeling all needed and unneeded classes that occur in the image exhaustively. Read More

We demonstrate that a deep neural network can significantly improve optical microscopy, enhancing its spatial resolution over a large field-of-view and depth-of-field. After its training, the only input to this network is an image acquired using a regular optical microscope, without any changes to its design. We blindly tested this deep learning approach using various tissue samples that are imaged with low-resolution and wide-field systems, where the network rapidly outputs an image with remarkably better resolution, matching the performance of higher numerical aperture lenses, also significantly surpassing their limited field-of-view and depth-of-field. Recently, the BESIII Collaboration reported two new decay processes $h_c(1P)\to \gamma \eta$ and $\gamma \eta^\prime$. Inspired by this measurement, we propose to study the radiative decays of $h_c$ via intermediate charmed meson loops in an effective Lagrangian approach. With the acceptable cutoff parameter range, the calculated branching ratios of $h_c(1P)\to \gamma \eta$ and $\gamma \eta^\prime$ are orders of $10^{-4}\sim 10^{-3}$ and $10^{-3} \sim 10^{-2}$, respectively. Background: Mining gene modules from genomic data is an important step to detect gene members of pathways or other relations such as protein-protein interactions. In this work, we explore the plausibility of detecting gene modules by factorizing gene-phenotype associations from a phenotype ontology rather than the conventionally used gene expression data. In particular, the hierarchical structure of ontology has not been sufficiently utilized in clustering genes while functionally related genes are consistently associated with phenotypes on the same path in the phenotype ontology. Phase recovery from intensity-only measurements forms the heart of coherent imaging techniques and holography. Here we demonstrate that a neural network can learn to perform phase recovery and holographic image reconstruction after appropriate training. This deep learning-based approach provides an entirely new framework to conduct holographic imaging by rapidly eliminating twin-image and self-interference related spatial artifacts. Read More

We report on WIMP search results in the XENON100 detector using a non-relativistic effective field theory approach. The data from science run II (34 kg $\times$ 224.6 live days) was re-analyzed, with an increased recoil energy interval compared to previous analyses, ranging from $(6. Read More

A graph is said to be {\it total-colored} if all the edges and vertices of the graph are colored. A path in a total-colored graph is a {\it total proper path} if $(i)$ any two adjacent edges on the path differ in color, $(ii)$ any two internal adjacent vertices on the path differ in color, and $(iii)$ any internal vertex of the path differs in color from its incident edges on the path. A total-colored graph is called {\it total-proper connected} if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a total proper path of the graph. Read More

Following the presentation and proof of the hypothesis that image features are particularly perceived at points where the Fourier components are maximally in phase, the concept of phase congruency (PC) is introduced. Subsequently, a two-dimensional multi-scale phase congruency (2D-MSPC) is developed, which has been an important tool for detecting and evaluation of image features. However, the 2D-MSPC requires many parameters to be appropriately tuned for optimal image features detection. Read More

After decades of progress and effort, obtaining a phase diagram for a strongly-correlated topological system still remains a challenge. Although in principle one could turn to Wilson loops and long-range entanglement, evaluating these non-local observables at many points in phase space can be prohibitively costly. With growing excitement over topological quantum computation comes the need for an efficient approach for obtaining topological phase diagrams. Read More

We consider the K\"ahler-Ricci flow on certain Calabi-Yau fibration, which is a product of two Calabi-Yau fibrations with one dimensional bases. Assume K\"ahler-Ricci flow on total space admits a uniform lower bound for Ricci curvature, then K\"ahler-Ricci flow converges in Gromov-Hausdorff topology to the metric completion of the regular part of generalized K\"ahler-Einstein current on the base, which is a compact length metric space homeomorphic to the base. The analogue result for the continuity method is also obtained. Read More

We construct $SL(2,R)$ invariant in anisotropic medium, with a dual anisotropic charged black hole geometry in massive gravity. We show how to obtain $SL(2,R)$ elements in terms of new degrees of freedom for Electromagnetic configuration, and construct the general expressions for conductivity with $SL(2,R)$ invariant. The holographic conductivities can be calculated using horizon data in an external magnetic field, and we show the numerical results using the linear response theory. Read More
