Extending state-of-the-art object detectors from image to video is challenging. The accuracy of detection suffers from degenerated object appearances in videos, e.g. Read More

A text-to-speech synthesis system typically consists of multiple stages, such as a text analysis frontend, an acoustic model and an audio synthesis module. Building these components often requires extensive domain expertise and may contain brittle design choices. In this paper, we present Tacotron, an end-to-end generative text-to-speech model that synthesizes speech directly from characters. Read More

Knowledge graph embedding aims to embed entities and relations of knowledge graphs into low-dimensional vector spaces. Translating embedding methods regard relations as the translation from head entities to tail entities, which achieve the state-of-the-art results among knowledge graph embedding methods. However, a major limitation of these methods is the time consuming training process, which may take several days or even weeks for large knowledge graphs, and result in great difficulty in practical applications. The exotic topological domains in ferroelectrics and multiferroics have attracted extensive interest in recent years due to their novel functionalities and potential applications in nanoelectronic devices. One of the key challenges for such applications is a realization of robust yet reversibly switchable nanoscale topological domain states with high density, wherein spontaneous topological structures can be individually addressed and controlled. This has been accomplished in our work using high density arrays of epitaxial BiFeO3 (BFO) nanodots with lateral size as small as ~60 nm. Read More

We study the physical properties of the persistent charged current in a mental ring on a noncommutative phase space, and temperature dependence of the noncommutative corrections are also analyzed. We find that the coordinate noncommutativity only affects the total magnitude of the current, and it is challenging to observe it. In contrast, the momentum noncommutativity can violate symmetry property of the current, and this violation of symmetry holds at a finite temperature. Read More

We study the boundary behaviors of a complete conformal metric which solves the $\sigma_k$-Ricci problem on the interior of a manifold with boundary. We establish asymptotic expansions and also $C^1$ and $C^2$ estimates for this metric multiplied by the square of the distance in a small neighborhood of the boundary. Read More

The existence of ferroelectricity in {$\mathrm{BiMnO}_3$} has been a long-standing question for both experimentalists and theorists. In addition to a highly distorted bulk structure, the ionic crystal planes cause a large roughness in thin films that makes it extremely difficult to nail down the physical mechanisms underlying a possible ferroelectric-ferromagnetic phase. We approach the problem by including the substrate explicitly to study the polarization. Read More

In this paper, we develop a novel paradigm, namely hypergraph shift, to find robust graph modes by probabilistic voting strategy, which are semantically sound besides the self-cohesiveness requirement in forming graph modes. Unlike the existing techniques to seek graph modes by shifting vertices based on pair-wise edges (i.e, an edge with $2$ ends), our paradigm is based on shifting high-order edges (hyperedges) to deliver graph modes. Resolvable Supermassive Black Hole Binaries are promising sources for Pulsar Timing Array based gravitational wave searches. Search algorithms for such targets must contend with the large number of so-called pulsar phase parameters in the joint log-likelihood function of the data. We compare the localization accuracy for two approaches: Maximization over the pulsar phase parameters (MaxPhase) against marginalization over them (AvPhase). Read More

Clock synchronization is a widely discussed topic in the engineering literature. Ensuring that individual clocks are closely aligned is important in network systems, since the correct timing of various events in a network is usually necessary for proper system implementation. However, many existing clock synchronization algorithms update clock values abruptly, resulting in discontinuous clocks which have been shown to lead to undesirable behavior. Read More

POLAR is space-borne detector designed for a precise measurement of gamma-ray polarization of the prompt emissions of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50 keV - 500 keV. POLAR is a compact Compton polarimeter consisting of 40$\times$ 40 plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs. In May 2015, we performed a series of tests of the POLAR flight model with 100\% polarized x-rays beams at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beam-line ID11 aming to study thresholds, crosstalk between channels and responses of POLAR flight model to polarized X-ray beams. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in automatically generating descriptions for an image. Most existing language-model based approaches for this task learn to generate an image description word by word in its original word order. However, for humans, it is more natural to locate the objects and their relationships first, and then elaborate on each object, describing notable attributes. Read More

A special homotopy continuation method, as a combination of the polyhedral homotopy and the linear product homotopy, is proposed for computing all the isolated solutions to a special class of polynomial systems. The root number bound of this method is between the total degree bound and the mixed volume bound and can be easily computed. The new algorithm has been implemented as a program called LPH using C++. Multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is an important class of LB model with lots of advantages over traditional single-relaxation-time (SRT) LB model. In addition, the computation of strain rate tensor is crucial in MRT-LB simulations of some complex flows. Up to now, there are only two formulas to compute the strain rate tensor in the MRT LB model. Read More

We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \eta h_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9. Read More

As a complementary study to that performed on the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra of pions, kaons and protons in proton-proton (pp) collisions at LHC energies 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV, we present a scaling behaviour in the $p_{\rm T}$ spectra of strange particles ($K_{S}^{0}$, $\Lambda$ and $\Xi$) at these three energies. Theoretical and observational evidences have been recently gained for a two-fold classification of short bursts: 1) short gamma-ray flashes (S-GRFs), with isotropic energy $E_{iso}<10^{52}$~erg and no black hole (BH) formation, and 2) the authentic short gamma-ray bursts (S-GRBs), with isotropic energy $E_{iso}>10^{52}$~erg evidencing a BH formation in the binary neutron star merging process. The signature for the BH formation consists in the on-set of the high energy ($0.1$--$100$~GeV) emission, coeval to the prompt emission, in all S-GRBs. Read More

Quantum walks, in virtue of the coherent superposition and quantum interference, possess the exponential superiority over its classical counterpart in applications of quantum searching and quantum simulation. A straitforward physical implementation involving merely photonic source, linear evolution network and detection make it very appealing, in light of the stringent requirements of universal quantum computing. The quantum enhanced power is highly related to the state space of quantum walks, which can be expanded by enlarging the dimension of evolution network and/or photon number. Read More

Despite the recent success of deep-learning based semantic segmentation, deploying a pre-trained road scene segmenter to a city whose images are not presented in the training set would not achieve satisfactory performance due to dataset biases. Instead of collecting a large number of annotated images of each city of interest to train or refine the segmenter, we propose an unsupervised learning approach to adapt road scene segmenters across different cities. By utilizing Google Street View and its time-machine feature, we can collect unannotated images for each road scene at different times, so that the associated static-object priors can be extracted accordingly. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have achieved great success in the genetic study of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Collaborative imaging genetics studies across different research institutions show the effectiveness of detecting genetic risk factors. However, the high dimensionality of GWAS data poses significant challenges in detecting risk SNPs for AD. Read More

Signal decomposition is a classical problem in signal processing, which aims to separate an observed signal into two or more components each with its own property. Usually each component is described by its own subspace or dictionary. Extensive research has been done for the case where the components are additive, but in real world applications, the components are often non-additive. Read More

The effects of the tilt of the crystallographic orientation with respect to an incident electron probe on high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging in aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) have been investigated with experiments and simulations. A small specimen tilt can lead to unequal deviations of different atom species in the HAADF image and result in further relative displacement between anions and cations. Simulated HAADF images also confirm that the crystal tilt causes an artifact in atom polarization as well. Read More

Experimental demonstrations of 1D van der Waals material tellurium have been presented by Raman spectroscopy under strain and magneto-transport. Raman spectroscopy measurements have been performed under strains along different principle axes. Pronounced strain response along c-axis is observed due to the strong intra-chain covalent bonds, while no strain response is obtained along a-axis due to the weak inter-chain van der Waals interaction. Ocean flows are routinely inferred from low-resolution satellite altimetry measurements of sea surface height (SSH) assuming a geostrophic balance. Recent nonlinear dynamical systems techniques have revealed that altimetry-inferred flows can support mesoscale eddies with material boundaries that do not filament for many months, thereby representing effective mechanisms for coherent transport. However, the significance of such coherent Lagrangian eddies is not free from uncertainty due to the impossibility of altimetry to resolve ageostrophic submesoscale motions, which have the potential of quickly eroding their boundaries. The reliable production of two-dimensional (2D) crystals are essential for exploring new science and implementing novel technologies in the 2D limit. However, ongoing efforts are limited by the vague potential in scaling-up, restrictions in growth substrates and conditions, small sizes and/or instability of synthesized materials. Here we report the fabrication of large-area, high-quality 2D tellurium (termed tellurene) by a substrate-free solution process. Read More

$[Background]$ Measurements of the neutron charge distribution are made difficult by the fact that, with no net charge, the neutron electric form factor, $G^n_E$, is generally much smaller than the magnetic form factor, $G^n_M$. In addition, measurements of these form factors must use nuclear targets which requires accurately accounting for nuclear effects. $[Method]$ The inclusive quasi-elastic reaction $^3\overrightarrow{\rm{He}}(\overrightarrow{e},e')$ was measured at Jefferson Lab. The proliferation of social media in communication and information dissemination has made it an ideal platform for spreading rumors. Automatically debunking rumors at their stage of diffusion is known as \textit{early rumor detection}, which refers to dealing with sequential posts regarding disputed factual claims with certain variations and highly textual duplication over time. Thus, identifying trending rumors demands an efficient yet flexible model that is able to capture long-range dependencies among postings and produce distinct representations for the accurate early detection. Understanding gene regulation is a fundamental step towards understanding of how cells function and respond to environmental cues and perturbations. An important step in this direction is to infer the transcription factor-gene regulatory network (GRN). However gene regulatory networks are typically constructed disregarding the fact that regulatory programs are conditioned on tissue type, developmental stage, sex, and other factors. Read More

We present a multi-epoch X-ray spectroscopy analysis of the nearby narrow-line Seyfert I galaxy NGC 5506. For the first time, spectra taken by Chandra, XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and NuSTAR - covering the 2000-2014 time span - are analyzed simultaneously, using state-of-the-art models to describe reprocessing of the primary continuum by optical thick matter in the AGN environment. The main goal of our study is determining the spin of the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Read More

Results are presented from a semi-coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, using data collected during the first Advanced LIGO observing run (O1). The search combines a frequency domain matched filter (Bessel-weighted $\mathcal{F}$-statistic) with a hidden Markov model to track wandering of the neutron star spin frequency. No evidence of gravitational waves is found in the frequency range 60-650 Hz. Read More

During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals and GW151226, produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). The precise simulation of the preparation, control, and readout of a single-hole spin is investigated via hierarchical equations of motion(HEOM) approach. By ionization of a resonantly excited electron-hole pair and tunneling the conduction level electrons into electrodes, a single-hole spin qubit is initialized. SU(2) control is achieved via the combination of Larmor procession of the hole spin in Voigt geometry magnetic field and rotation about the optical axis with a geometric phase induced by a picosecond laser pulse. The long lasting attempt to identify the nature of X-ray flares, observed by Swift after the prompt emission of some long gamma ray bursts (GRBs), is here addressed within the context of a special subclass of long GRBs with isotropic energy $E_{iso} > 10^{52}$~erg, recently indicated as binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe). Such BdHNe have as progenitor a tight binary system composed of a carbon-oxygen core (CO$_\mathrm{core}$) and a neutron star (NS) undergoing an induced gravitational collapse (IGC) to a black hole (BH) triggered by the CO$_\mathrm{core}$ explosion as a supernova (SN). Only in the case of such BdHNe, when analysed in the rest frame of the sources, the time of occurrence, the temporal duration, the X-ray luminosity and the total energy of the flares correlate with the $E_{iso}$. In this paper, we prove the Geometric Arveson-Douglas Conjecture for a special case which allow some singularity on $\partial{\mathbb{B}_n}$. More precisely, we show that if a variety can be decomposed into two varieties, each having nice properties and intersecting nicely with $\partial\mathbb{B}_n$, then the Geometric Arveson-Douglas Conjecture holds on this variety. We obtain this result by applying a result by Su\'arez, which allows us to "localize" the problem. Read More

Previous approaches for scene text detection have already achieved promising performances across various benchmarks. However, they usually fall short when dealing with challenging scenarios, even when equipped with deep neural network models, because the overall performance is determined by the interplay of multiple stages and components in the pipelines. In this work, we propose a simple yet powerful pipeline that yields fast and accurate text detection in natural scenes. Read More

The millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is envisioned to provide orders of magnitude capacity improvement. However, it is challenging to realize a sufficient link margin due to high path loss and blockages. To address this difficulty, in this paper, we explore the potential gain of ultra-densification for enhancing mmWave communications from a network-level perspective. Read More

Efimov effect in few-body physics shows many interesting properties and the most prominent one is discrete scale invariance. Here we report the discovery of log-periodic oscillations on the magnetoresistance of stoichiometric single-crystal ZrTe5 in the ultra-quantum regime, which are virtually the most accurate manifestation of the discrete scale invariance so far with up to five periods. Characterized by this feature, the Efimov bound states have been firstly revealed in a fermionic system and even in any condensed matter systems, by showing up to five observable bound states for the first time. Prestack seismic data carries much useful information that can help us find more complex atypical reservoirs. Therefore, we are increasingly inclined to use prestack seismic data for seis- mic facies recognition. However, due to the inclusion of ex- cessive redundancy, effective feature extraction from prestack seismic data becomes critical. Read More

This paper is concerned with the intrinsic geometric structure of interior transmission eigenfunctions arising in wave scattering theory. We numerically show that the aforementioned geometric structure can be much delicate and intriguing. The major findings can be roughly summarized as follows. Read More

We present theoretical and experimental evidence of a universal mechanism through which temporal cavity solitons of externally-driven, passive, Kerr resonators can form robust long-range bound states. These bound states, sometime also referred to as multi-soliton states or soliton crystals in microresonators, require perturbations to the strict Lugiato-Lefever mean field description of temporal cavity solitons. Binding occurs when the perturbation excites a narrowband resonance in the soliton spectrum, which gives long oscillatory tails to the solitons. Read More

We study inverse problems for the Einstein-Maxwell equations. We prove that it is possible to generate gravitational waves from the nonlinear interactions of electromagnetic waves. By sending electromagnetic waves from a neighborhood of a freely falling observer and taking measurements of the gravitational perturbations in the same neighborhood, one can determine the vacuum space-time structure up to diffeomorphisms in the largest region where these waves can travel to from the observer and return. Dynamical patterns in complex networks of coupled oscillators are both of theoretical and practical interest, yet to fully reveal and understand the interplay between pattern emergence and network structure remains to be an outstanding problem. A fundamental issue is the effect of network structure on the stability of the patterns. We address this issue by using the setting where random links are systematically added to a regular lattice and focusing on the dynamical evolution of spiral wave patterns. Read More

We make a mixture of Milner's $\pi$-calculus and our previous work on truly concurrent process algebra, which is called $\pi_{tc}$. We introduce syntax and semantics of $\pi_{tc}$, its properties based on strongly truly concurrent bisimilarities. Also, we include an axiomatization of $\pi_{tc}$. Read More

We present a systematic introduction to the diagrammatic method for practical calculations in inflationary cosmology, based on Schwinger-Keldysh path integral formalism. We show in particular that the diagrammatic rules can be derived directly from a classical Lagrangian even in the presence of derivative couplings. Furthermore, we use quasi-single-field inflation as an example to show how this formalism, combined with the trick of mixed propagator, can significantly simplify the calculation of some in-in correlation functions. Very large-scale Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have achieved remarkable successes in a large variety of computer vision tasks. However, the high computation intensity of DNNs makes it challenging to deploy these models on resource-limited systems. Some studies used low-rank approaches that approximate the filters by low-rank basis to accelerate the testing. Read More

Average consensus is fundamental for distributed systems since it underpins key functionalities of such systems ranging from distributed information fusion, decision-making, to decentralized control. In order to reach an agreement, existing average consensus algorithms require each agent to exchange explicit state information with its neighbors. This leads to the disclosure of private state information, which is undesirable in cases where privacy is of concern. Read More
