This paper is concerned with the time-asymptotic behavior of strong solutions to an initial-boundary value problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system on the half line $\mathbb{R}^+$. The asymptotic profile of the problem is shown to be a shifted viscous shock profile, which is suitably away from the boundary. Moreover, we prove that if the initial data around the shifted viscous shock profile and the strength of the shifted viscous shock profile are sufficiently small, then the problem has a unique global strong solution, which tends to the shifted viscous shock profile as time goes to infinity. Confined diffusion characterizes transport in many natural and artificial devices, such as ionic channels, zeolites, and nanopores. While this important subject has been extensively studied analytically and by numerical simulations, systematic experimental investigations are rare. Here, we experimentally measure colloidal diffusion times in microchannels with periodically varying width and contrast results with predictions from the Fick-Jacobs theory and Brownian dynamics simulation. The purpose of this note is to give a simple proof of the fact that a certain substack, defined in [2], of the moduli stack $T^{\ast}Bun_G(\Sigma)$ of Higgs bundles over a curve $\Sigma$, for a connected, simply connected semisimple group $G$, possesses a Lagrangian structure. The substack, roughly speaking, consists of images under the moment map of global sections of principal $G$-bundles over $\Sigma$ twisted by a smooth symplectic variety with a Hamiltonian $G$-action. Self-supported electrocatalysts being generated and employed directly as electrode for energy conversion has been intensively pursued in the fields of materials chemistry and energy. Herein, we report a synthetic strategy to prepare freestanding hierarchically structured, nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membranes functionalized with Janus-type Co/CoP nanocrystals (termed as HNDCM-Co/CoP), which were successfully applied as a highly-efficient, binder-free electrode in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Benefited from multiple structural merits, such as high degree of graphitization, three-dimensionally interconnected micro-/meso-/macropores, uniform nitrogen-doping, well-dispersed Co/CoP nanocrystals as well as the confinement effect of the thin carbon layer on the nanocrystals, HNDCM-Co/CoP exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity and long-term operation stability for HER under both acid and alkaline conditions. To locate all eigenvalues of a matrix more precisely, we exclude some sets which do not include any eigenvalue of the matrix from the well-known Brauer set to give two new Brauer-type eigenvalue inclusion sets. And it is also shown that the new sets are contained in the Brauer set. Read More

Reusable model design becomes desirable with the rapid expansion of machine learning applications. In this paper, we focus on the reusability of pre-trained deep convolutional models. Specifically, different from treating pre-trained models as feature extractors, we reveal more treasures beneath convolutional layers, i. Read More

In this paper, we first propose two types of concepts of almost periodic functions on the quantum time scale and translation operators for functions defined on the quantum time scale. Secondly, we study some basic properties of almost periodic functions on the quantum time scale. Then, based on these, we study some basic theory of almost periodic dynamic equations on the quantum time scale, which includes some Favard type theorems and the theory of the exponential dichotomy of linear dynamic equations. We report on a measurement of the flavor-specific $B^{0}_{s}$ lifetime and of the $D^{-}_{s}$ lifetime using proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Approximately 407 000 $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{(*)-}_{s} \mu^{+}\nu_\mu $ decays are partially reconstructed in the $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{-}\mu^{+}$ final state. Read More

In 1990, Schnyder used a 3-spanning-tree decomposition of a simple triangulation, now known as the Schnyder wood, to give a fundamental grid-embedding algorithm for planar maps. We show that a uniformly sampled Schnyder-wood-decorated triangulation with $n$ vertices converges as $n\to\infty$ to the Liouville quantum gravity with parameter $1$, decorated with a triple of SLE$_{16}$'s of angle difference $2\pi/3$ in the imaginary geometry sense. Our convergence result provides a description of the continuum limit of Schnyder's embedding algorithm via Liouville quantum gravity and imaginary geometry. Read More

Emotion analysis is a crucial problem to endow artifact machines with real intelligence in many large potential applications. As external appearances of human emotions, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and video face signals are widely used to track and analyze human's affective information. According to their common characteristics of spatial-temporal volumes, in this paper we propose a novel deep learning framework named spatial-temporal recurrent neural network (STRNN) to unify the learning of two different signal sources into a spatial-temporal dependency model. Suppose that $X$ and $Y$ are quasiconvex and complete metric spaces, that $G\subset X$ and $G'\subset Y$ are domains, and that $f: G\to G'$ is a homeomorphism. In this paper, we first give some basic properties of short arcs, and then we show that: if $f$ is a weakly quasisymmetric mapping and $G'$ is a quasiconvex domain, then the image $f(D)$ of every uniform subdomain $D$ in $G$ is uniform. As an application, we get that if $f$ is a weakly quasisymmetric mapping and $G'$ is an uniform domain, then the images of the short arcs in $G$ under $f$ are uniform arcs in the version of diameter. In this paper, we propose a single-agent logic of goal-directed knowing how extending the standard epistemic logic of knowing that with a new knowing how operator. The semantics of the new operator is based on the idea that knowing how to achieve $\phi$ means that there exists a (uniform) strategy such that the agent knows that it can make sure $\phi$. We give an intuitive axiomatization of our logic and prove the soundness, completeness, and decidability of the logic. Read More

A test of lepton universality, performed by measuring the ratio of the branching fractions of the $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0}\textit{\mu}^{+}\textit{\mu}^{-}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0}e^{+}e^{-}$ decays, $R_{K^{*0}}$, is presented. The $K^{*0}$ meson is reconstructed in the final state $K^{+}\pi^{-}$, which is required to have an invariant mass within 100$\mathrm{\,MeV/}c^2$ of the known $K^{*}(892)^{0}$ mass. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 3$\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8$\mathrm{\,TeV}$. The model of inhomogeneous accretion flow, in which cold clumps are surrounded by hot gas or corona, has been proposed to explain the spectral features of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs). In this work, we try to find possible observational features in the continuum that can indicate the existence of clumps. The spectra of inhomogeneous accretion flow are calculated via the Monte Carlo method. Read More

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have recently attracted large research interest, since the huge available bandwidth can potentially lead to rates of multiple Gbps (gigabit per second) per user. Though mmWave can be readily used in stationary scenarios such as indoor hotspots or backhaul, it is challenging to use mmWave in mobile networks, where the transmitting/receiving nodes may be moving, channels may have a complicated structure, and the coordination among multiple nodes is difficult. To fully exploit the high potential rates of mmWave in mobile networks, lots of technical problems must be addressed. Read More

The Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic quantum state of matter that does not exhibit classical magnetic order at zero temperature. The realization of such a state in actual materials is of significant importance, as it would provide a path to protected states for quantum information and also to Majorana fermions - both very active areas of interest in condensed matter physics. No solid evidence for the existence of such materials has been established in the laboratory, however, despite a decades-long search. Read More

In this work we compare mass spectra and decay constants obtained from two recent, independent, and fully relativistic approaches to the quarkonium bound-state problem: the Hamiltonian basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) approach, where light-front wave functions are naturally formulated; and, the covariant spectator theory (CST), based on a reorganization of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Even though conceptually different, both solutions are obtained in Minkowski space. Comparisons of decay constants for more than ten states of charmonium and bottomonium show favorable agreement between the two approaches as well as with experiment where available. Read More

Motivated by the study of collapsing Calabi-Yau threefolds with a Lefschetz K3 fibration, we construct a complete Calabi-Yau metric on $\mathbb{C}^3$ with maximal volume growth, which in the appropriate scale is expected to model the collapsing metric near the nodal point. This new Calabi-Yau metric has singular tangent cone at infinity, and its Riemannian geometry has certain non-standard features near the singularity of the tangent cone $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{C}$, which are more typical of adiabatic limit problems. The proof uses an existence result in H-J. Read More

Implicit models, which allow for the generation of samples but not for point-wise evaluation of probabilities, are omnipresent in real world problems tackled by machine learning and a hot topic of current research. Some examples include data simulators that are widely used in engineering and scientific research, generative adversarial networks (GANs) for image synthesis, and hot-off-the-press approximate inference techniques relying on implicit distributions. The majority of existing approaches to learning implicit models rely on approximating the intractable distribution or optimisation objective for gradient-based optimisation, which is liable to produce inaccurate updates and thus poor models. We study the structures of admissible words and full words for $\beta$-expansion. The distribution of full words are characterized by giving all the precise numbers of consecutive full words and non-full words with same lengths. Read More

Universal style transfer aims to transfer any arbitrary visual styles to content images. Existing feed-forward based methods, while enjoying the inference efficiency, are mainly limited by inability of generalizing to unseen styles or compromised visual quality. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective method that tackles these limitations without training on any pre-defined styles. Read More

This paper introduces a video dataset of spatio-temporally localized Atomic Visual Actions (AVA). The AVA dataset densely annotates 80 atomic visual actions in 64k movie clips with actions localized in space and time, resulting in 197k action labels with multiple labels per human occurring frequently. The main differences with existing video datasets are: (1) the definition of atomic visual actions, which avoids collecting data for each and every complex action; (2) precise spatio-temporal annotations with possibly multiple annotations for each human; (3) the use of diverse, realistic video material (movies). We study the unidirectional amplification of optical probe fields in a three-mode optomechanical system, where the mechanical resonator interacts with two linearly-coupled optical cavities and the cavities are driven by strong optical pump fields. An optical probe field is injected into one of the cavity modes, and at the same time, it is applied to the mechanical mode after being down-converted by the optical pump frequency. We show that the transmission of the probe field can be amplified in one direction and de-amplified in the opposite direction. Read More

Benefited from the widely deployed infrastructure, the LTE network has recently been considered as a promising candidate to support the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) services. However, with a massive number of devices accessing the V2X network in the future, the conventional OFDM-based LTE network faces the congestion issues due to its low efficiency of orthogonal access, resulting in significant access delay and posing a great challenge especially to safety-critical applications. The non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique has been well recognized as an effective solution for the future 5G cellular networks to provide broadband communications and massive connectivity. In this paper, we consider a dense vehicular communication network where each vehicle broadcasts its safety information to its neighborhood in each transmission period. Such applications require low latency and high reliability, and thus, we exploit non-orthogonal multiple access to reduce the access latency and to improve the packet reception probability. In the proposed two-fold scheme, the BS performs semi-persistent scheduling and allocates time-frequency resources in a non-orthogonal manner while the vehicles autonomously perform distributed power control with iterative signaling control. Single-shot real-time characterization of optical waveforms with sub-picosecond resolution is essential for investigating various ultrafast optical dynamics. However, the finite temporal recording length of current techniques hinders comprehensive understanding of many intriguing ultrafast optical phenomena that evolve over a time scale much longer than their fine temporal details. Inspired by the space-time duality and by stitching of multiple microscopic images to achieve a larger field of view in the spatial domain, here a panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging (PARTI) system is devised to scale up the temporal recording length without sacrificing the resolution. We develope a self-consistent description of the Broad Line Region based on the concept of the failed wind powered by the radiation pressure acting on dusty accretion disk atmosphere in Keplerian motion. The material raised high above the disk is illuminated, dust evaportes, and the matter falls back towards the disk. This material is the source of emission lines. Read More

This paper investigates the optimal resource allocation of a downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system consisting of one base station and multiple users. Unlike existing short-term NOMA designs that focused on the resource allocation for only the current transmission timeslot, we aim to maximize a long-term network utility by jointly optimizing the data rate control at the network layer and the power allocation among multiple users at the physical layer, subject to practical constraints on both the short-term and long-term power consumptions. To solve this problem, we leverage the recently-developed Lyapunov optimization framework to convert the original long-term optimization problem into a series of online rate control and power allocation problems in each timeslot. We report a possible periodicity in the long-term monitoring of Ark 120, a nearby radio-quiet active galactic nucleus (AGN) at a distance of 143 Mpc (z=0.03271). We compile the historic archival photometric and spectroscopic data of Ark 120 since 1974 and make a new two-year monitoring campaign in 2015-2017, leading to a total temporal baseline over four decades. A search is presented for long-lived particles with a mass between 25 and 50 GeV/$c^2$ and a lifetime between 2 and 500 ps, using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The particles are assumed to be pair-produced in the decay of a 125 GeV/$c^2$ Standard-Model-like Higgs boson. Read More

The low-noise operation of readout electronics in a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) is critical to properly extract the distribution of ionization charge deposited on the wire planes of the TPC, especially for the induction planes. This paper describes the characteristics and mitigation of the observed noise in the MicroBooNE detector. The MicroBooNE's single-phase LArTPC comprises two induction planes and one collection sense wire plane with a total of 8256 wires. Read More

The recent progress of human parsing techniques has been largely driven by the availability of rich data resources. In this work, we demonstrate some critical discrepancies between the current benchmark datasets and the real world human parsing scenarios. For instance, all the human parsing datasets only contain one person per image, while usually multiple persons appear simultaneously in a realistic scene. Read More

Proteins perform their functions usually by interacting with other proteins. Predicting which proteins interact is a fundamental problem. Experimental methods are slow, expensive, and have a high rate of error. Read More

Neurotransmitter receptor molecules, concentrated in synaptic membrane domains along with scaffolds and other kinds of proteins, are crucial for signal transmission across chemical synapses. In common with other membrane protein domains, synaptic domains are characterized by low protein copy numbers and protein crowding, with rapid stochastic turnover of individual molecules. We study here in detail a stochastic lattice model of the receptor-scaffold reaction-diffusion dynamics at synaptic domains that was found previously to capture, at the mean-field level, the self-assembly, stability, and characteristic size of synaptic domains observed in experiments. We consider the setup of nonparametric 'blind regression' for estimating the entries of a large $m \times n$ matrix, when provided with a small, random fraction of noisy measurements. We assume that all rows $u \in [m]$ and columns $i \in [n]$ of the matrix are associated to latent features $x_1(u)$ and $x_2(i)$ respectively, and the $(u,i)$-th entry of the matrix, $A(u, i)$ is equal to $f(x_1(u), x_2(i))$ for a latent function $f$. Given noisy observations of a small, random subset of the matrix entries, our goal is to estimate the unobserved entries of the matrix as well as to "de-noise" the observed entries. Read More

Blood pressure (BP) has been a difficult vascular risk factor to measure continuously and precisely with a small cuffless electronic gadget. In the meantime, it is the key biomarker for control of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the leading cause of death worldwide. In this work, we addressed the current limitation of BP prediction models by formulating BP extraction as a temporal sequence prediction problem in which both the input and target are sequential data. We apply a large-scale computational technique, known as topology optimization, to the inverse design of photonic Dirac cones. In particular, we report on a variety of photonic crystal geometries, realizable in simple isotropic dielectric materials, which exhibit dual-polarization and dual-wavelength Dirac cones. We demonstrate the flexibility of this technique by designing photonic crystals of different symmetry types, such as ones with four-fold and six-fold rotational symmetry, which possess Dirac cones at different points within the Brillouin zone. In most common settings of Markov Decision Process (MDP), an agent evaluate a policy based on expectation of (discounted) sum of rewards. However in many applications this criterion might not be suitable from two perspective: first, in risk aversion situation expectation of accumulated rewards is not robust enough, this is the case when distribution of accumulated reward is heavily skewed; another issue is that many applications naturally take several objective into consideration when evaluating a policy, for instance in autonomous driving an agent needs to balance speed and safety when choosing appropriate decision. In this paper, we consider evaluating a policy based on a sequence of quantiles it induces on a set of target states, our idea is to reformulate the original problem into a multi-objective MDP problem with lexicographic preference naturally defined. It is commonly believed that the fidelity of quantum teleportation in the gravitational field would be degraded due to the heat up by the Hawking radiation. In this paper, we point out that the Hawking effect could be eliminated by the combined action of pre- and post-weak measurements, and thus the teleportation fidelity is almost completely protected. It is intriguing to notice that the enhancement of fidelity could not be attributed to the improvement of entanglement, but rather to the probabilistic nature of weak measurements. Read More

In the stochastic matching problem, we are given a general (not necessarily bipartite) graph $G(V,E)$, where each edge in $E$ is realized with some constant probability $p > 0$ and the goal is to compute a bounded-degree (bounded by a function depending only on $p$) subgraph $H$ of $G$ such that the expected maximum matching size in $H$ is close to the expected maximum matching size in $G$. The algorithms in this setting are considered non-adaptive as they have to choose the subgraph $H$ without knowing any information about the set of realized edges in $G$. Originally motivated by an application to kidney exchange, the stochastic matching problem and its variants have received significant attention in recent years. Read More

The Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m radio telescope has been used to search for 95 GHz (8$_0$--7$_1$A$^+$) class I methanol masers towards 1020 Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) sources, leading to 213 detections. We have compared the line width of the methanol and HCO$^+$ thermal emission in all of the methanol detections and on that basis we find 205 of the 213 detections are very likely to be masers. We study supersolidity of two-component bosonic atoms on a square lattice, where one species is weakly dressed to an electronically high-lying (Rydberg) state, generating a tunable, soft-core shape long-range interaction. Interactions between atoms of the other species and of the two species are characterized by onsite s-wave collisions. Using a dynamical mean-field calculation, we find that interspecies onsite interactions can stabilize a pronounced region of supersolid phases. Read More
