We present first evidence for the process $e^+e^-\to \gamma\eta_c(1S)$ at six center-of-mass energies between 4.01 and 4.60~GeV using data collected by the BESIII experiment operating at BEPCII. Read More

In this paper, we study three asymptotic regimes that can be applied to ranking and selection (R&S) problems with general sample distributions. These asymptotic regimes are constructed by sending particular problem parameters (probability of incorrect selection, smallest difference in system performance that we deem worth detecting) to zero. We establish asymptotic validity and efficiency of the corresponding R&S procedures in each regime. Read More

W. Zhang's arithmetic fundamental lemma (AFL) is a conjectural identity between the derivative of an orbital integral on a symmetric space with an arithmetic intersection number on a unitary Rapoport-Zink space. In the minuscule case, Rapoport-Terstiege-Zhang have verified the AFL conjecture via explicit evaluation of both sides of the identity. Read More

Using a data set of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. Read More

We compute the parity violating three point amplitudes with one scalar leg in higher spin gravity and compare results with those of Chern-Simons matter theories. The three-point correlators of the free boson, free fermion, critical vector model and Gross-Neveu model are reproduced including the dependence on the Chern-Simons coupling. We also perform a simple test of the modified higher spin equations proposed in arXiv:1605. Read More

We provide comments on the article "High-dimensional simultaneous inference with the bootstrap" by Ruben Dezeure, Peter Buhlmann and Cun-Hui Zhang. Read More

This article develops a framework for testing general hypothesis in high-dimensional models where the number of variables may far exceed the number of observations. Existing literature has considered less than a handful of hypotheses, such as testing individual coordinates of the model parameter. However, the problem of testing general and complex hypotheses remains widely open. Read More

We report the coupled slowing down of electronic and structural dynamics in a charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulating oxide directly measured in the time domain. Following optical excitation, the recovery time of both transient optical reflectivity and x-ray diffraction intensity from a charge-ordered superstructure in a La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_3$ thin film increases by orders of magnitude to microseconds when the sample temperature approaches the phase transition temperature. The recovery time becomes much longer than the independently measured lattice cooling time, indicating a nonthermal origin of the slowing down. Read More

Low-profile patterned plasmonic surfaces are synergized with a broad class of silicon microstructures to greatly enhance near-field nanoscale imaging, sensing, and energy harvesting coupled with far-field free-space detection. This concept has a clear impact on several key areas of interest for the MEMS community, including but not limited to ultra-compact microsystems for sensitive detection of small number of target molecules, and surface devices for optical data storage, micro-imaging and displaying. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art in plasmonic theory as well as derive design guidance for plasmonic integration with microsystems, fabrication techniques, and selected applications in biosensing, including refractive-index based label-free biosensing, plasmonic integrated lab-on-chip systems, plasmonic near-field scanning optical microscopy and plasmonics on-chip systems for cellular imaging. Optimizing nonlinear measures of deformation over a mesh, in two or three dimensions, is a common and critical problem in both geometry processing and physical simulation. We identify and analyze the role element-inversion plays during line-search phases in geometry optimization. To robustly unblock line-search we first develop a new method that augments the barrier model in the objective of stiff energies with an explicit constraint model. Read More

We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \eta h_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9. Read More

We classify the class $S$ theories of type $E_7$. These are four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories arising from the compactification of the $E_7$ $(2,0)$ theory on a punctured Riemann surface, $C$. The classification is given by listing all 3-punctured spheres ("fixtures"), and connecting cylinders, which can arise in a pants-decomposition of $C$. Read More

A multigrid technique is developed for the implicit unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS) for steady state flow computations in all flow regimes. The UGKS is a direct modeling method on the scales of mesh size and time step, and it recovers multiple flow physics from the kinetic scale particle transport to the hydrodynamic wave propagation. The UGKS is based on the modeling of the time evolution of both macroscopic flow variables and microscopic particle distribution function. Read More

Uniqueness of the finite element solution for nonmonotone quasilinear problems of elliptic type is established in one and two dimensions. In each case, we prove a comparison theorem based on locally bounding the variation of the discrete so- lution over each element. The uniqueness follows from this result, and does not require a globally small meshsize. Read More

The extraordinary properties and the novel applications of black phosphorene induce the research interest on the monolayer group-IV monochalcogenides. Here using the first-principles calculations, we systematically investigate the electronic, transport and optical properties of monolayer $\alpha-$ and $\beta-$GeSe, the latter of which was recently experimentally realized. We found that, monolayer $\alpha-$GeSe is a semiconductor with direct band gap of 1. Read More

This notebook paper describes our system for the untrimmed classification task in the ActivityNet challenge 2016. We investigate multiple state-of-the-art approaches for action recognition in long, untrimmed videos. We exploit hand-crafted motion boundary histogram features as well feature activations from deep networks such as VGG16, GoogLeNet, and C3D. Read More

It is well-known that exploiting label correlations is important to multi-label learning. Existing approaches either assume that the label correlations are global and shared by all instances; or that the label correlations are local and shared only by a data subset. In fact, in the real-world applications, both cases may occur that some label correlations are globally applicable and some are shared only in a local group of instances. Read More

Analyzing videos of human actions involves understanding the temporal relationships among video frames. CNNs are the current state-of-the-art methods for action recognition in videos. However, the CNN architectures currently being used have difficulty in capturing these relationships. Read More

We study the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system with uncertainty and multiple scales. Here the uncertainty, modeled by random variables, enters the solution through initial data, while the multiple scales lead the system to its high-field or parabolic regimes. With the help of proper Lyapunov-type inequalities, under some mild conditions on the initial data, the regularity of the solution in the random space, as well as exponential decay of the solution to the global Maxwellian, are established under Sobolev norms, which are ${\it uniform}$ in terms of the scaling parameters. We propose the configurable rendering of massive quantities of photorealistic images with ground truth for the purposes of training, benchmarking, and diagnosing computer vision models. In contrast to the conventional (crowd-sourced) manual labeling of ground truth for a relatively modest number of RGB-D images captured by Kinect-like sensors, we devise a non-trivial configurable pipeline of algorithms capable of generating a potentially infinite variety of indoor scenes using a stochastic grammar, specifically, one represented by an attributed spatial And-Or graph. We employ physics-based rendering to synthesize photorealistic RGB images while automatically synthesizing detailed, per-pixel ground truth data, including visible surface depth and normal, object identity and material information, as well as illumination. We prove an explicit formula for the arithmetic intersection number of diagonal cycles on GSpin Rapoport-Zink spaces in the minuscule case. This is a local problem arising from the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for orthogonal Shimura varieties. Our formula can be viewed as an orthogonal counterpart of the arithmetic-geometric side of the arithmetic fundamental lemma proved by Rapoport-Terstiege-Zhang in the minuscule case. Read More

We propose and experimentally achieve a directional dipole field radiated by an omnidirectional monopole source enclosed in a subwavelength structure of acoustically hybrid resonances. The whole structure has its every dimension at an order smaller than the sound wavelength. The significance is that the radiation efficiency is up to 2. Read More

We study the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Lambda_c^{+}\to p\eta$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to p\pi^{0}$ using $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\Lambda_{c}^{+}$ pairs produced by $e^+e^-$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 4.6\; GeV$. The data sample was collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 $pb^{-1}$. Read More

In magnetic multilayers, spin accumulation manifests itself as an excess of electrons in one spin channel and an equal deficiency in the other under the quasi-neutrality condition. Here, taking a typical ferromagnet/nonmagnet (FM/NM) junction as an example, we model the two spin channels as the two plates of a capacitor. This enables us to introduce the spin-accumulation (SA) capacitance to measure the ability of a material to store spins. Read More

We present long-slit optical spectra of 12 edge-on low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) positioned along their major axes. After performing reddening corrections for the emission-line fluxes measured from the extracted integrated spectra, we measured the gas-phase metallicities of our LSBG sample using both the [NII]/Ha and the R_23 diagnostics. Both sets of oxygen abundances show good agreement with each other, giving a median value of 12 + log(O/H) = 8. Read More

Using a macroscopic approach, we studied theoretically the heat generation in a typical spin valve with nonmagnetic spacer layer of finite thickness. Our analysis shows that the spin-dependent heat generation cannot be interpreted as the Joule heating of the spin-coupled interface resistance except for some special segments. Moreover, the spin-coupled interface resistance can be negative in certain situation, and thus its "Joule heating" should be understood instead as the work done by the extra field in the ferromagnetic layers and at the spin-selective interfaces. The extra heat generation in spin transport is usually interpreted in terms of the spin relaxation. By reformulating the heat generation rate, we found alternative current-force pairs without cross effects, which enable us to interpret the product of each pair as a distinct mechanism of heat generation. The results show that the spin-dependent part of the heat generation includes two terms. Read More

The set-membership information fusion problem is investigated for general multisensor nonlinear dynamic systems. Compared with linear dynamic systems and point estimation fusion in mean squared error sense, it is a more challenging nonconvex optimization problem. Usually, to solve this problem, people try to find an efficient or heuristic fusion algorithm. Read More

In this paper, we study the complete bounded $\lambda$-hypersurfaces in weighted volume-preserving mean curvature flow. Firstly, we investigate the volume comparison theorem of complete bounded $\lambda$-hypersurfaces with $|A|\leq\alpha$ and get some applications of the volume comparison theorem. Secondly, we consider the relation among $\lambda$, extrinsic radius $k$, intrinsic diameter $d$, and dimension $n$ of the complete $\lambda$-hypersurface, and we obtain some estimates for the intrinsic diameter and the extrinsic radius. The WHM - type materials (W=Zr/Hf/La, H=Si/Ge/Sn/Sb, M=O/S/Se/Te) have been predicted to be a large pool of topological materials. These materials allow for fine tuning of spin-orbit coupling, lattice constant and structural dimensionality for various combinations of W, H and M elements, thus providing an excellent platform to study how these parameters' tuning affect topological semimetal state. In this work, we report the high field quantum oscillation studies on ZrGeM (M=S, Se, and Te). Read More

We study the unsupervised learning of CNNs for optical flow estimation using proxy ground truth data. Supervised CNNs, due to their immense learning capacity, have shown superior performance on a range of computer vision problems including optical flow prediction. They however require the ground truth flow which is usually not accessible except on limited synthetic data. Read More

This paper studies the global existence of classical solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) system with only magnetic diffusion on the periodic domain. The approach is based on a time-weighted energy estimate, under the assumptions that the initial magnetic field is close enough to an equilibrium state and the initial data have reflection symmetry. We present an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} \pi^{+} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ based on a data sample of 2.93 ${\mbox{\,fb}^{-1}}$ acquired by the BESIII detector at the $\psi(3770)$ resonance. With a nearly background free sample of about 16000 events, we investigate the substructure of the decay and determine the relative fractions and the phases among the different intermediate processes. To estimate casual treatment effects, we propose a new matching approach based on the reduced covariates obtained from sufficient dimension reduction. Compared to the original covariates and the propensity score, which are commonly used for matching in the literature, the reduced covariates are estimable nonparametrically under a mild assumption on the original covariates, and are sufficient and effective in imputing the missing potential outcomes. Under the ignorability assumption, the consistency of the proposed approach requires a weaker common support condition. Read More

Neel skyrmions are of high interest due to their potential applications in a variety of spintronic devices, currently accessible in ultrathin heavy metal/ferromagnetic bilayers and multilayers with a strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here we report on the direct imaging of chiral spin structures including skyrmions in an exchange coupled Co/Pd multilayer at room temperature with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, a high resolution technique previously suggested to exhibit no Neel skyrmion contrast. Phase retrieval methods allow us to map the internal spin structure of the skyrmion core, identifying a 25 nm central region of uniform magnetization followed by a larger region characterized by rotation from in- to out-of-plane. Schroeder diffuser is a classical design, proposed over 40 years ago, for artificially creating optimal and predictable sound diffuse reflection. It has been widely adopted in architectural acoustics and it has also shown substantial potential in noise control, ultrasound imaging, microparticle manipulation, among others. The conventional Schroeder diffuser, however, has a considerable thickness on the order of one wavelength, severely impeding its applications for low frequency sound. Read More

We investigate the problem of representing an entire video using CNN features for human action recognition. Currently, limited by GPU memory, we have not been able to feed a whole video into CNN/RNNs for end-to-end learning. A common practice is to use sampled frames as inputs and video labels as supervision. Read More

The standard design method for conventional straight dipole magnets is improved in this paper. The good field region is not symmetric with respect to the magnet mechanical center, and its width is not enlarged to include the beam sagitta. The integrated field quality is obtained by integrating the field along nominal beam paths. Read More

Shared autonomy integrates user input with robot autonomy in order to control a robot and help the user to complete a task. Our work aims to improve the performance of such a human-robot team: the robot tries to guide the human towards an effective strategy, sometimes against the human's own preference, while still retaining his trust. We achieve this through a principled human-robot mutual adaptation formalism. Read More

Although ACID is the previous golden rule for transaction support, durability is now not a basic requirement for data storage. Rather, high availability is becoming the first-class property required by online applications. We show that high availability of data is almost surely a stronger property than durability. Read More
