The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a wide-field two-band photometric survey of the Northern Galactic Cap using the 90Prime imager on the 2.3 m Bok telescope at Kitt Peak. Ultrafast electron pulses, combined with laser-pump and electron-probe technologies, allow for various forms of ultrafast microscopy and spectroscopy to elucidate otherwise challenging to observe physical and chemical transitions. However, the pursuit of simultaneous ultimate spatial and temporal resolution has been largely subdued by the low monochromaticity of the electron pulses and their poor phase synchronization to the optical excitation pulses. We study the integral Galactic extinction and reddening based on the galaxy catalog of the South Galactic Cap U-band Sky Survey (SCUSS), where $u$ band galaxy number counts and $u-r$ color distribution are used to derive the Galactic extinction and reddening respectively. We compare these independent statistical measurements with the reddening map of \citet{Schlegel1998}(SFD) and find that both the extinction and reddening from the number counts and color distribution are in good agreement with the SFD results at low extinction regions ($E(B-V)^{SFD}<0.12$ mag). We present and analyze the possibility of using optical ${\it u}$-band luminosities to estimate star-formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies based on the data from the South Galactic Cap ${\it u }$ band Sky Survey (SCUSS), which provides a deep ${\it u}$-band photometric survey covering about 5000 $deg^2$ of the South Galactic Cap. Based on two samples of normal star-forming galaxies selected by the BPT diagram, we explore the correlations between ${\it u}$-band, H$\alpha$, and IR luminosities by combing SCUSS data with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and ${\it Wide}$-${\it field\ Infrared\ Survey\ Explorer}$ (${\it WISE}$). DESI (Dark Energy Spectropic Instrument) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey. The DESI instrument is a robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrograph capable of taking up to 5,000 simultaneous spectra over a wavelength range from 360 nm to 980 nm. Based on the LAMOST survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we use low-resolution spectra of 130,043 F/G-type dwarf stars to study the kinematics and metallicity properties of the Galactic disk. Our study shows that the stars with poorer metallicity and larger vertical distance from Galactic plane tend to have larger eccentricity and velocity dispersion. After separating the sample stars into likely thin-disk and thick-disk sub-sample, we find that there exits a negative gradient of rotation velocity $V_{\phi}$ with metallicity [Fe/H] for the likely thin-disk sub-sample, and the thick-disk sub-sample exhibit a larger positive gradient of rotation velocity with metallicity. We develop a new Monte-Carlo-based method to convert the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) $u$-band magnitude to the SCUSS (South Galactic Cap of $u$-band Sky Survey) $u$-band magnitude. The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) carried out high-cadence time-series observations of 20.1 square degrees centered on the South Celestial Pole during the 2008, 2009 & 2010 winter seasons from Dome A in Antarctica. We present a science forecast for the eBOSS survey, part of the SDSS-IV project, which is a spectroscopic survey using multiple tracers of large-scale structure, including luminous red galaxies (LRGs), emission line galaxies (ELGs) and quasars (both as a direct probe of structure and through the Ly-$\alpha$ forest). Focusing on discrete tracers, we forecast the expected accuracy of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO), the redshift-space distortion (RSD) measurements, the $f_{\rm NL}$ parameter quantifying the primordial non-Gaussianity, the dark energy and modified gravity parameters. We also use the line-of-sight clustering in the Ly-$\alpha$ forest to constrain the total neutrino mass. Read More

Based on SDSS g, r and SCUSS (South Galactic Cap of u-band Sky Survey) $u$ photometry, we develop a photometric calibration for estimating the stellar metallicity from $u-g$ and $g-r$ colors by using the SDSS spectra of 32,542 F- and G-type main sequence stars, which cover almost $3700$ deg$^{2}$ in the south Galactic cap. Asymmetric X-ray emission and powerful cluster-scale radio halo indicate that A2319 is a merging cluster of galaxies. This paper presents our multicolor photometry for A2319 with 15 optical intermediate filters in the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) system. There are 142 galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts within the viewing field, including 128 member galaxies (called sample I). Read More

The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) is the first telescope facility built at Dome A, Antarctica. During the 2008 observing season, the installation provided long-baseline and high-cadence photometric observations in the i-band for 18,145 targets within 20 deg2 CSTAR field around the South Celestial Pole for the purpose of monitoring the astronomical observing quality of Dome A and detecting various types of photometric variability. Using sensitive and robust detection methods, we discover 274 potential variables from this data set, 83 of which are new discoveries. Read More

Absolute proper motions for $\sim$ 7.7 million objects were derived based on data from the South Galactic Cap u-band Sky Survey (SCUSS) and astrometric data derived from uncompressed Digitized Sky Surveys that the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) created from the Palomar and UK Schmidt survey plates. The third generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) took data from 2008 to 2014 using the original SDSS wide-field imager, the original and an upgraded multi-object fiber-fed optical spectrograph, a new near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, and a novel optical interferometer. All the data from SDSS-III are now made public. In particular, this paper describes Data Release 11 (DR11) including all data acquired through 2013 July, and Data Release 12 (DR12) adding data acquired through 2014 July (including all data included in previous data releases), marking the end of SDSS-III observing. The Tsinghua University-National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) Transient Survey (TNTS) is an automatic survey for a systematic exploration of optical transients (OTs), conducted with a 60/90 cm Schmidt telescope at Xinglong station of NAOC. The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) carried out high-cadence time-series observations of 27 square degrees centered on the South Celestial Pole during the Antarctic winter seasons of 2008, 2009 and 2010. Aperture photometry of the 2008 and 2010 i-band images resulted in the discovery of over 200 variable stars. We present 2MASS $JHK_{\rm s}$ photometry for 913 star clusters and candidates in the field of M31, which are selected from the latest Revised Bologna Catalog of M31 globular clusters (GCs) and candidates. The photometric measurements in this paper supplement this catalog, and provide a most comprehensive and homogeneous photometric catalog for M31 GCs in the $JHK_{\rm s}$ bandpasses. Based on SDSS and South Galactic Cap of u-band Sky Survey (SCUSS) early data, we use star counts method to estimate the Galactic structure parameters in an intermediate latitude with 10,180 main-sequence (MS) stars in absolute magnitude interval of $4 \leq M_r \leq 13$. We divide the absolute magnitude into five intervals:$4 \leq M_r < 5$, $5 \leq M_r < 6$, $6 \leq M_r < 8$, $8 \leq M_r < 10$, $10 \leq M_r \leq 13$, and estimate the Galactic structure parameters in each absolute magnitude interval to explore their possible variation with the absolute magnitude. Using the stellar atmospheric parameters such as effective temperature and metallicity derived from SDSS spectra for 2200 main sequence (MS) stars which were also observed by Beijing - Arizona - Taiwan - Connecticut (BATC) photometric system, we develop the polynomial photometric calibration method to evaluate the stellar effective temperature and metallicity for BATC multi-color photometric data. Multi-band photometric images from ultraviolet and optical to infrared are collected to derive spatially resolved properties of a nearby Scd type galaxy M 101. With evolutionary stellar population synthesis models, two-dimensional distributions and radial profiles of age, metallicity, dust attenuation, and star formation timescale in the form of the Sandage star formation history are obtained. When fitting with the models, we use the IRX-$A_\mathrm{FUV}$ relation, found to depend on a second parameter of birth rate b (ratio of present and past-averaged star formation rate), to constrain the dust attenuation. We have monitored the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 in five intermediate optical wavebands from 2004 September to 2011 April. Here we present the data that include 8661 measurements which represents one of the largest databases obtained for an object at optical domain. This paper presents multicolor optical photometry of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 119 (z = 0:0442) with the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) system of 15 intermediate bands. Within the BATC viewing field of 58'* 58', there are 368 galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts, including 238 member galaxies (called sample I).
