We show that outer approximately represenbtable actions of a finite cyclic group on UCT Kirchberg algebras satisfy a certain quasi-freeness type property if the corresponding crossed products satisfy the UCT and absorb a suitable UHF algebra tensorially. More concretely, we prove that for such an action there exists an inverse semigroup of homogeneous partial isometries that generates the ambient C*-algebra and whose idempotent semilattice generates a Cartan subalgebra. We prove a similar result for actions of finite cyclic groups with the Rokhlin property on UCT Kirchberg algebras absorbing a suitable UHF algebra. Read More

In this paper, as an analogue of the integer case, we define polynomial functions over the residue class rings of polynomials over a finite field, and then we give canonical representations and the counting formula for such polynomial functions. Read More

The ab initio description of the spectral interior of the absorption spectrum poses both a theoretical and computational challenge for modern electronic structure theory. Due to the often spectrally dense character of this domain in the quantum propagator's eigenspectrum for medium-to-large sized systems, traditional approaches based on the partial diagonalization of the propagator often encounter oscillatory and stagnating convergence. Alternatively, electronic structure methods which solve the molecular response problem through the solution of spectrally shifted linear systems, such as the complex polarization propagator, offer an alternative approach which is agnostic to the underlying spectral density or domain location. Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) recently emerged as one of the most competitive approaches for learning in sequential decision making problems with fully observable environments, e.g., computer Go. Read More

Deep neural networks (DNNs) play a key role in many applications. Current studies focus on crafting adversarial samples against DNN-based image classifiers by introducing some imperceptible perturbations to the input. However, DNNs for natural language processing have not got the attention they deserve. Read More

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), with their two-dimensional structures and sizable bandgaps, are good candidates for barrier materials in tunneling field-effect transistor (TFET) formed from atomic precision vertical stacks of graphene and insulating crystals of a few atomic layers in thickness. We report first-principles study of the electronic properties of the Graphene/WS$_2$/Graphene sandwich structure revealing strong interface effects on dielectric properties and predicting a high ON/OFF ratio with an appropriate WS$_2$ thickness and a suitable range of the gate voltage. Both the band spin-orbit coupling splitting and the dielectric constant of the WS$_2$ layer depend on its thickness when in contact with the graphene electrodes, indicating strong influence from graphene across the interfaces. A path in an edge-colored graph is called \emph{conflict-free} if it contains at least one color used on exactly one of its edges. An edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{conflict-free connected} if for any two distinct vertices of $G$, there is a conflict-free path connecting them. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{conflict-free connection number} of $G$, denoted by $cfc(G)$, is defined as the minimum number of colors that are required to make $G$ conflict-free connected. We report on the cryogenic characterization of Red Green Blue - High Density (\RGBHd) \SiPMs\ developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (\FBK) as part of the \DS\ program of dark matter searches with liquid argon time projection chambers. A dedicated setup was used to measure the primary dark noise, the correlated noise, and the gain of the \SiPMs\ at varying temperatures. A custom-made data acquisition system and analysis software were used to precisely characterize these parameters. Read More

We investigate the dynamical effects of non-Gaussian noisy fluctuations on the evolution of the transcrip- tion factor activator in the kinetic model of a single genetic regulation system. The noisy fluctuations arise from the determination of the synthesis rate and degradation rate, and are modeled by asymmetric stable L\'evy motions. We use two deterministic quantities, the mean first exit time (MFET) and the first escape probability (FEP), to examine the transition events from low to concentration states under the influences of two types of noise. The Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic quantum state of matter that does not exhibit classical magnetic order at zero temperature. The realization of such a state in actual materials is of significant importance, as it would provide a path to protected states for quantum information and also to Majorana fermions - both very active areas of interest in condensed matter physics. No solid evidence for the existence of such materials has been established in the laboratory, however, despite a decades-long search. Read More

As the interface between human and machine becomes blurred, hydrogel incorporated electronics and devices have emerged to be a new class of flexible/stretchable electronic and ionic devices due to their extraordinary properties, such as soft, mechanically robust and biocompatible. However, heat dissipation in these devices could be a critical issue and remains unexplored. Here, we report the experimental measurements and equilibrium molecular dynamic (EMD) simulations of thermal conduction in polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels at room temperature. Read More

This work presents theoretical demonstration of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in monolayer phosphorene nanorings (PNR). Atomistic quantum transport simulations of PNR are employed to investigate the impact of multiple modulation sources on the sample conductance. In presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, we find that the conductance of both armchair and zigzag PNR oscillate periodically in a low-energy window as a manifestation of the AB effect. Using a data set of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. Read More

We develop a reciprocity formula for a spectral sum over central values of L-functions on GL(4)xGL(2). As an application we show that for any self-dual cusp form Pi for SL(4,Z), there exists a Maass form pi for SL(2,Z) such that L(1/2, Pi x pi) is nonvanishing. An important ingredient is a "balanced" Voronoi summation formula involving Kloosterman sums on both sides, which can also be thought of as the functional equation of a certain double Dirichlet series involving Kloosterman sums and GL(4) Hecke eigenvalues. Important effects of noise on a one-dimensional gene expression model involving a single gene have recently been discussed. However, few works have been devoted to the transition in two-dimensional models which include the interaction of genes. Therefore, we investigate here, a quantitative two-dimensional model (MeKS network) of gene expression dynamics describing the competence development in the B. Read More

Data unfolding is a common analysis technique used in HEP data analysis. Inspired by the deconvolution technique in the digital signal processing, a new unfolding technique based on the SVD technique and the well-known Wiener filter is introduced. The Wiener-SVD unfolding approach achieves the unfolding by maximizing the signal to noise ratios in the effective frequency domain and is free from regularization parameter. Read More

A common explanation for the CMB power asymmetry is to introduce a dipolar modulation at the stage of inflation, where the primordial power spectrum is spatially varying. If the universe in the stage of inflation is Finslerian, and if the Finsler spacetime is non-reversible under parity flip, $x\rightarrow-x$, then a three dimensional spectrum which is the function of wave vector and direction is valid. In this paper, a three dimensional primordial power spectrum with preferred direction is derived in the framework of Finsler spacetime. Read More

In this paper we first prove the so-called large twist theorem, then using it to prove the boundedness of all solutions and the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for Duffing's equation $$ \ddot{x}+x^{2n+1}+\dsum_{i=0}^{2n}p_i(t)x^i=0, $$ where $p_i(t)\in C^1(\mathbb{S}) (n+1\leq i\leq 2n)$ and $p_i(t)\in C^0(\mathbb{S}) (0\leq i\leq n)$ with $\mathbb{S}=\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$. We consider the problem of channel estimation for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, where, to minimize the hardware complexity and power consumption, an analog transmit beamforming and receive combining structure with only one radio frequency (RF) chain at the base station (BS) and mobile station (MS) is employed. Most existing works for mmWave channel estimation exploit sparse scattering characteristics of the channel. In addition to sparsity, mmWave channels may exhibit angular spreads over the angle of arrival (AoA), angle of departure (AoD), and elevation domains. Read More

We present Deep Speaker, a neural speaker embedding system that maps utterances to a hypersphere where speaker similarity is measured by cosine similarity. The embeddings generated by Deep Speaker can be used for many tasks, including speaker identification, verification, and clustering. We experiment with ResCNN and GRU architectures to extract the acoustic features, then mean pool to produce utterance-level speaker embeddings, and train using triplet loss based on cosine similarity. Intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) with a mass between $10^{2}$ and $10^{5}$ times that of the sun, which bridges the {mass gap between the} stellar-mass black holes and the supermassive black holes, are crucial in understanding the evolution of the black holes. Although they are widely believed to exist, decisive evidence has long been absent. Motivated by the successful detection of massive stellar-mass black holes by advanced LIGO, through the gravitational wave radiation during the binary merger, in this work we investigate the prospect of detecting/identifying the lightest IMBHs (LIMBHs; the black holes $\gtrsim 100M_\odot$) with the second generation gravitational wave detectors. We propose a method for demonstrating sub community structure in scientific networks of relatively small size from analyzing databases of publications. Research relationships between the network members can be visualized as a graph with vertices corresponding to authors and with edges indicating joint authorship. Using a fast clustering algorithm combined with a graph layout algorithm, we demonstrate how to display these clustering results in an attractive and informative way. Read More

The massive amounts of machine-type user equipments (UEs) will be supported in the future fifth generation (5G) networks. However, the potential large random access (RA) delay calls for a new RA scheme and for a detailed assessment of its performance. Motivated by the key idea of non-orthogonal multiple access, the non-orthogonal random access (NORA) scheme based on successive interference cancellation (SIC) is proposed in this paper to alleviate the access congestion problem. In layered transition metal dichalcogenides (LTMDCs) that display both charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity, the superconducting state generally emerges directly on suppression of the CDW state. Here, however, we report a different observation for pressurized TaTe2, a non-superconducting CDW-bearing LTMDC at ambient pressure. We find that a superconducting state does not occur in TaTe2 after the full suppression of its CDW state, which we observe at about 3 GPa, but, rather, a non-superconducting semimetal state is observed. The single $\pi^0$ production rate in neutral current neutrino interactions on water in a neutrino beam with a peak neutrino energy of 0.6 GeV has been measured using the P{\O}D, one of the subdetectors of the T2K near detector. The production rate was measured for data taking periods when the P{\O}D contained water ($2. Read More

The panoramic video is widely used to build virtual reality (VR) and is expected to be one of the next generation Killer-Apps. Transmitting panoramic VR videos is a challenging task because of two problems: 1) panoramic VR videos are typically much larger than normal videos but they need to be transmitted with limited bandwidth in mobile networks. 2) high-resolution and fluent views should be provided to guarantee a superior user experience and avoid side-effects such as dizziness and nausea. The dynamics of zero-range processes on complex networks is expected to be influenced by the underlying topological structure of networks. A real space complete condensation transition in the stationary state may occur. We have studied the finite density effects of the condensation transition in both the static and dynamical zero-range process on scale-free network. Read More

Atomically-thin 2D semiconducting materials integrated into van der Waals heterostructures have enabled architectures that hold great promise for next generation nanoelectronics. However, challenges still remain to enable their full acceptance as compliant materials for integration in logic devices. Two key-components to master are the barriers at metal/semiconductor interfaces and the mobility of the semiconducting channel, which endow the building-blocks of ${pn}$ diode and field effect transistor. In this paper, we propose a new deep feature selection method based on deep architecture. Our method uses stacked auto-encoders for feature representation in higher-level abstraction. We developed and applied a novel feature learning approach to a specific precision medicine problem, which focuses on assessing and prioritizing risk factors for hypertension (HTN) in a vulnerable demographic subgroup (African-American). The proliferation of social media in communication and information dissemination has made it an ideal platform for spreading rumors. Automatically debunking rumors at their stage of diffusion is known as \textit{early rumor detection}, which refers to dealing with sequential posts regarding disputed factual claims with certain variations and highly textual duplication over time. Thus, identifying trending rumors demands an efficient yet flexible model that is able to capture long-range dependencies among postings and produce distinct representations for the accurate early detection. In this paper, we consider positioning with observed-time-difference-of-arrival (OTDOA) for a device deployed in long-term-evolution (LTE) based narrow-band Internet-of-things (NB-IoT) systems. We propose an iterative expectation-maximization based successive interference cancellation (EM-SIC) algorithm to jointly consider estimations of residual frequency-offset (FO), fading-channel taps and time-of-arrival (ToA) of the first arrival-path for each of the detected cells. In order to design a low complexity ToA detector and also due to the limits of low-cost analog circuits, we assume an NB-IoT device working at a low-sampling rate such as 1. Read More

In this paper we initiate a study on Gauss factorials of polynomials over finite fields, which are the analogues of Gauss factorials of positive integers. Read More

Suppose that $\lambda$, $\mu\in P(n)$ where $P(n)$ is the set of integer partitions of $n$. For an irreducible character $\chi^\lambda$ of $S_n$, when $\chi^\lambda(\mu)\neq0$ we find another partition $\tau$ related to $\lambda$ such that $\chi^\tau(\mu)\neq0$. Applying this result, we obtain more nonzero Kronecker coefficients by Pak et al. Read More

We theoretically study a one-dimensional (1D) mutually incommensurate bichromatic lattice system which has been implemented in ultracold atoms to study quantum localization. It has been universally believed that the tight-binding version of this bichromatic incommensurate system is represented by the well-known Aubry-Andre model. Here we establish that this belief is incorrect and that the Aubry-Andre model description, which applies only in the extreme tight-binding limit of very deep primary lattice potential, generically breaks down near the localization transition due to the unavoidable appearance of single-particle mobility edges (SPME). Repair performance in hierarchical data centers is often bottlenecked by cross-rack network transfer. Recent theoretical results show that the cross-rack repair bandwidth can be minimized through repair layering, whose idea is to partition a repair operation into inner-rack and cross-rack layers. However, how repair layering should be implemented and deployed in practice remains an open issue. Read More

Despite its promising performance gain, the realization of mmWave massive MIMO still faces several practical challenges. In particular, implementing massive MIMO in the digital domain requires hundreds of RF chains matching the number of antennas. Furthermore, designing these components to operate at the mmWave frequencies is challenging and costly. Read More

Building a dialogue agent to fulfill complex tasks, such as travel planning, is challenging because the agent has to learn to collectively complete multiple subtasks. For example, the agent needs to reserve a hotel and book a flight so that there leaves enough time for commute between arrival and hotel check-in. This paper addresses this challenge by formulating the task in the mathematical framework of options over Markov Decision Processes (MDPs), and proposing a hierarchical deep reinforcement learning approach to learning a dialogue manager that operates at different temporal scales. We construct a class of positive linear maps on matrix algebras. We find conditions when these maps are atomic, decomposable and completely positive. We obtain a large class of atomic positive linear maps. Read More

Laser cooling of relativistic heavy ion beams of Li-like C$^{3+}$ and O$^{4+}$ is being in preparation at the experimental Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe). Recently, a preparatory experiment to test important prerequisites for laser cooling of relativistic $^{12}$C$^{3+}$ ion beams using a pulsed laser system has been performed at the CSRe. Unfortunately, the interaction between the ions and the pulsed laser cannot be detected. Read More

This paper is concerned with the intrinsic geometric structure of interior transmission eigenfunctions arising in wave scattering theory. We numerically show that the aforementioned geometric structure can be much delicate and intriguing. The major findings can be roughly summarized as follows. Read More

We propose a novel deep layer cascade (LC) method to improve the accuracy and speed of semantic segmentation. Unlike the conventional model cascade (MC) that is composed of multiple independent models, LC treats a single deep model as a cascade of several sub-models. Earlier sub-models are trained to handle easy and confident regions, and they progressively feed-forward harder regions to the next sub-model for processing. Read More
