In this paper, we study the $\mu$-ordinary locus of a Shimura variety with parahoric level structure. Under the Axioms in \cite{HR}, we show that $\mu$-ordinary locus is a union of some maximal Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport strata introduced in \cite{HR} and we give criteria on the density of the $\mu$-ordinary locus. We introduce an architecture in which internal representations, learned by end-to-end optimization in a deep neural network performing a textual question-answering task, can be interpreted using basic concepts from linguistic theory. This interpretability comes at a cost of only a few percentage-point reduction in accuracy relative to the original model on which the new one is based (BiDAF [1]). The internal representation that is interpreted is a Tensor Product Representation: for each input word, the model selects a symbol to encode the word, and a role in which to place the symbol, and binds the two together. The unusually high surface tension of room temperature liquid metal is molding it as unique material for diverse newly emerging areas. However, unlike its practices on earth, such metal fluid would display very different behaviors when working in space where gravity disappears and surface property dominates the major physics. So far, few direct evidences are available to understand such effect which would impede further exploration of liquid metal use for space. Read More

Motivated by problems in behavioural finance, we provide two explicit constructions of a randomized stopping time which embeds a given centered distribution $\mu$ on integers into a simple symmetric random walk in a uniformly integrable manner. Our first construction has a simple Markovian structure: at each step, we stop if an independent coin with a state-dependent bias returns tails. Our second construction is a discrete analogue of the celebrated Az\'ema-Yor solution and requires independent coin tosses only when excursions away from maximum breach predefined levels. Read More

The anomalous metallic state in high-temperature superconducting cuprates is masked by the onset of superconductivity near a quantum critical point. Use of high magnetic fields to suppress superconductivity has enabled a detailed study of the ground state in these systems. Yet, the direct effect of strong magnetic fields on the metallic behavior at low temperatures is poorly understood, especially near critical doping, $x=0. Read More

According to maximum entropy principle, it has been proved that the gravitational field equations could be derived by the extrema of total entropy for perfect fluid, which implies that thermodynamic relations contain information of gravity. In this manuscript, we obtain a criterion for thermodynamical stability of an adiabatic, self-gravitating perfect fluid system by the second variation of total entropy. We show, for Einstein's gravity with spherical symmetry spacetime, that the criterion is consistent with that for dynamical stability derived by Chandrasekhar and Wald. Read More

We investigate the stability criterions for perfect fluid in $f(R)$ theories which is an important generalization of general relativity. Firstly, using Wald's general variation principle, we recast Seifert's work and obtain the dynamical stability criterion. Then using our generalized thermodynamical criterion, we obtain the concrete expressions of the criterion. Read More

Embedding network data into a low-dimensional vector space has shown promising performance for many real-world applications, such as node classification and entity retrieval. However, most existing methods focused only on leveraging network structure. For social networks, besides the network structure, there also exists rich information about social actors, such as user profiles of friendship networks and textual content of citation networks. Imagining a disk which provides baseline performance at a relatively low price during low-load periods, but when workloads demand more resources, the disk performance is automatically promoted in situ and in real time. In a hardware era, this is hardly achievable. However, this imagined disk is becoming reality due to the technical advances of software-defined storage, which enable volume performance to be adjusted on the fly. Read More

We simulate boron on Pb(110) surface by using ab initio evolutionary methodology. Interestingly, the two-dimensional (2D) Dirac Pmmn boron can be formed because of good lattice matching. Unexpectedly, by increasing the thickness of 2D boron, a three-bonded graphene-like structure (P2_1/c boron) was revealed to possess double anisotropic Dirac cones. Read More

This paper addresses the problem of predicting popularity of comments in an online discussion forum using reinforcement learning, particularly addressing two challenges that arise from having natural language state and action spaces. First, the state representation, which characterizes the history of comments tracked in a discussion at a particular point, is augmented to incorporate the global context represented by discussions on world events available in an external knowledge source. Second, a two-stage Q-learning framework is introduced, making it feasible to search the combinatorial action space while also accounting for redundancy among sub-actions. Read More

Fine-grained image classification is a challenging task due to the large intra-class variance and small inter-class variance, aiming at recognizing hundreds of sub-categories belonging to the same basic-level category. Most existing fine-grained image classification methods generally learn part detection models to obtain the semantic parts for better classification accuracy. Despite achieving promising results, these methods mainly have two limitations: (1) not all the parts which obtained through the part detection models are beneficial and indispensable for classification, and (2) fine-grained image classification requires more detailed visual descriptions which could not be provided by the part locations or attribute annotations. The presence of multiple ion species can add additional branches to the IAW dispersion relation and change the Landau damping significantly. Different IAW modes excited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and different SBS behaviors in several typical ignition hohlraum plasmas in the high-temperature and high-density region have been researched by Vlasov-Maxwell simulation. The slow mode in HeH or CH plasmas is the least damped mode and will be excited in SBS, while the fast mode in AuB plasmas is the least damped mode and will be excited in SBS. Read More

Fine-grained image classification is to recognize hundreds of subcategories belonging to the same basic-level category, such as 200 subcategories belonging to bird, and highly challenging due to large variance in same subcategory and small variance among different subcategories. Existing methods generally find where the object or its parts are and then discriminate which subcategory the image belongs to. However, they mainly have two limitations: (1) Relying on object or parts annotations which are heavily labor consuming. Read More

We study an economical model of weakly-interacting massive particle dark matter (DM) which has spin 3/2 and interacts with the 125-GeV Higgs boson via effective scalar and pseudoscalar operators. We apply constraints on the model from the relic density data, LHC measurements of the Higgs boson, and direct and indirect searches for DM, taking into account the effective nature of the DM-Higgs couplings. We find that this DM is currently viable in most of the mass region from about 58 GeV to 2. Read More

The sPHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) will perform high precision measurements of jets and heavy flavor observables for a wide selection of nuclear collision systems, elucidating the microscopic nature of strongly interacting matter ranging from nucleons to the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma. A prototype of the sPHENIX calorimeter system was tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility as experiment T-1044 in the spring of 2016. The electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) prototype is composed of scintillating fibers embedded in a mixture of tungsten powder and epoxy. Read More

During 2015 the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provided collisions of transversely polarized protons with Au and Al nuclei for the first time, enabling the exploration of transverse-single-spin asymmetries with heavy nuclei. Large single-spin asymmetries in very forward neutron production have been previously observed in transversely polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at RHIC, and the existing theoretical framework that was successful in describing the single-spin asymmetry in $p$$+$$p$ collisions predicts only a moderate atomic-mass-number ($A$) dependence. In contrast, the asymmetries observed at RHIC in $p$$+$$A$ collisions showed a surprisingly strong $A$ dependence in inclusive forward neutron production. Read More

In this paper, we propose a novel, thermodynamically consistent phase field model to simulate the deformation and breakup of a ferrodroplet that is immersed in a viscous medium and subject to an applied uniform magnetic field. Instead of using the magnetic body force in the traditional Rosensweig model, the key idea of this model is to propose a new magnetic energy that enables direct effects of the magnetic field on the interface evolution. The model can thereby be derived from the variational principle via minimizing the free energy of the total system. Read More

The cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetries of $\mu^{-}$ and $\mu^{+}$ from open heavy-flavor decays in polarized $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV were measured by the PHENIX experiment during 2012 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because heavy-flavor production is dominated by gluon-gluon interactions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, these measurements offer a unique opportunity to obtain information on the trigluon correlation functions. The measurements are performed at forward and backward rapidity ($1. Read More

We study constraints and implications of the recent LHCb measurement of ${\cal B}(B_s \to \mu^+\mu^-)$ for tree-level Higgs-mediated flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions. Combined with experimental data on $B_s$ mass difference $\Delta m_s$, the $h \to \mu \tau$, and the $h \to \tau^+\tau^-$ decay branching ratios from the LHC, we find that the Higgs FCNC couplings are severely constrained. The allowed regions for $B_s \to \mu \tau$, $\tau\tau$ and $h \to sb$ decays are obtained. Read More

Direct studies of intense laser-solid interactions is still of great challenges, because of the many coupled physical mechanisms, such as direct laser heating, ionization dynamics, collision among charged particles, and electrostatic or electromagnetic instabilities, to name just a few. Here, we present a full particle-in-cell simulation (PIC) framework, which enables us to calculate laser-solid interactions in a "first principle" way, covering almost "all" the coupled physical mechanisms. Apart from the mechanisms above, the numerical self-heating of PIC simulations, which usually appears in solid-density plasmas, is also well controlled by the proposed "layered-density" method. Learning sophisticated feature interactions behind user behaviors is critical in maximizing CTR for recommender systems. Despite great progress, existing methods seem to have a strong bias towards low- or high-order interactions, or require expertise feature engineering. In this paper, we show that it is possible to derive an end-to-end learning model that emphasizes both low- and high-order feature interactions. Read More

In this paper, we show that the elliptic cocenter of the Hecke algebra of a connected reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field is contained in the rigid cocenter. As applications, we prove the trace Paley-Wiener theorem and the abstract Selberg principle for mod-$l$ representations. Read More

We study the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Lambda_c^{+}\to p\eta$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to p\pi^{0}$ using $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\Lambda_{c}^{+}$ pairs produced by $e^+e^-$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 4.6\; GeV$. The data sample was collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 $pb^{-1}$. Read More

Precision medicine is an emerging scientific topic for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual patient characteristics. It is an important direction for clinical research, and many statistical methods have been recently proposed. One of the primary goals of precision medicine is to obtain an optimal individual treatment rule (ITR), which can help make decisions on treatment selection according to each patient's specific characteristics. Quantum entanglement is crucial for simulating and understanding exotic physics of strongly correlated many-body systems, such as high--temperature superconductors, or fractional quantum Hall states. The entanglement of non-identical particles exhibits richer physics of strong many-body correlations and offers more opportunities for quantum computation, especially with neutral atoms where in contrast to ions the interparticle interaction is widely tunable by Feshbach resonances. Moreover, the inter-species entanglement forms a basis for the properties of various compound systems, ranging from Bose-Bose mixtures to photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes. Read More

We explore simple Higgs-portal models of dark matter (DM) with spin 1/2, 3/2, and 1, respectively, applying to them constraints from the LUX and PandaX-II direct detection experiments and from LHC measurements on the 125-GeV Higgs boson. With only one Higgs doublet, we find that the spin-1/2 DM having a purely scalar effective coupling to the doublet is viable only in a narrow range of mass near the Higgs pole, whereas the vector DM is still allowed if its mass is also close to the Higgs pole or exceeds 1.4 TeV, both in line with earlier analyses. Connecting different text attributes associated with the same entity (conflation) is important in business data analytics since it could help merge two different tables in a database to provide a more comprehensive profile of an entity. However, the conflation task is challenging because two text strings that describe the same entity could be quite different from each other for reasons such as misspelling. It is therefore critical to develop a conflation model that is able to truly understand the semantic meaning of the strings and match them at the semantic level. Read More

We propose a way for transferring Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states from $n$ qubits in one cavity onto another $n$ qubits in the other cavity. It is shown that $n$-qubit GHZ states $\alpha \left\vert 00.. Read More

The precise determination of the CKM matrix element $\left| V_{cb}\right|$ is important for carrying out tests of the flavour sector of the Standard Model. In this article we present a preliminary analysis of the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay mode and its charge conjugate, selected in events that contain a fully reconstructed $B$-meson, using 772 million $e^+ \, e^- \to \Upsilon(4S) \to B \bar B$ events recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. Read More

The problem of quantizing the activations of a deep neural network is considered. An examination of the popular binary quantization approach shows that this consists of approximating a classical non-linearity, the hyperbolic tangent, by two functions: a piecewise constant sign function, which is used in feedforward network computations, and a piecewise linear hard tanh function, used in the backpropagation step during network learning. The problem of approximating the ReLU non-linearity, widely used in the recent deep learning literature, is then considered. Read More

We report a measurement of $e^+e^-$ pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$~GeV. The $e^+e^-$ pair yield from $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ is separated by exploiting a double differential fit done simultaneously in dielectron invariant mass and $p_T$. We used three different event generators, {\sc pythia}, {\sc mc@nlo}, and {\sc powheg}, to simulate the $e^+e^-$ spectra from $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ production. Read More

The fraction of $J/\psi$ mesons which come from B-meson decay, $\textrm{F}_{B{\rightarrow}J/\psi}$, is measured for J/$\psi$ rapidity \mbox{$1.2<|y|<2.2$} and $p_T>0$ in $p$+$p$ and Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV with the PHENIX detector. Read More

Different from the previous works on generating entangled states, this work is focused on how to transfer the prepared entangled states onto memory qubits for protecting them against decoherence. We here consider a physical system consisting of $n$ operation qubits and $2n$ memory qubits placed in a cavity or coupled to a resonator. A method is presented for transferring $n$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states from the operation qubits (i. Read More

Private record linkage is the problem of identifying pairs of records that are similar as per an input matching rule from databases that are held by two parties that do not trust one another. We identify three key desiderata that a PRL solution must ensure: a proof of end-to-end privacy, communication and computational costs that scale sub-quadratically in the number of input records, perfect precision and high recall of matching pairs. We show that all of the existing solutions for PRL -- including secure 2-party computation (S2PC), and their variants that use non-private or differentially private (DP) blocking -- violate at least one of the three desiderata. One of the interesting portals linking a dark sector and the standard model (SM) is the kinetic mixing between the SM $U(1)_Y$ field with a new dark photon $A'$ from a $U(1)_{A'}$ gauge interaction. Stringent limits have been obtained for the kinetic mixing parameter $\epsilon$ through various processes. In this work, we study the possibility of searching for a dark photon interaction at a circular $e^+e^-$ collider through the process $e^+ e^-\to \gamma A^{\prime *} \to \gamma \mu^+\mu^-$. The anti-Stokes scattering and Stokes scattering in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) cascade have been researched by the Vlasov-Maxwell simulation. In the high-intensity laser-plasmas interaction, the stimulated anti-Stokes Brillouin scattering (SABS) will occur after the second stage SBS rescattering. The mechanism of SABS has been put forward to explain this phenomenon. Read More

Using the first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we systematically investigate the strain-engineering (tensile and compressive strain) electronic, mechanical and transport properties of monolayer penta-SiC$_2$. By applying an in-plane tensile or compressive strain, it is easy to modulate the electronic band structure of monolayer penta-SiC$_2$, which subsequently changes the effective mass of carriers. Furthermore, the obtained electronic properties are predicted to change from indirectly semiconducting to metallic. Read More

We report the first measurement of the fraction of $J/\psi$ mesons coming from $B$-meson decay ($F_{B{\rightarrow}J/\psi}$) in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 510 GeV. The measurement is performed using the forward silicon vertex detector and central vertex detector at PHENIX, which provide precise tracking and distance-of-closest-approach determinations, enabling the statistical separation of $J/\psi$ due to $B$-meson decays from prompt $J/\psi$. The measured value of $F_{B{\rightarrow}J/\psi}$ is 8. Read More

We address the problem of instance-level semantic segmentation, which aims at jointly detecting, segmenting and classifying every individual object in an image. In this context, existing methods typically propose candidate objects, usually as bounding boxes, and directly predict a binary mask within each such proposal. As a consequence, they cannot recover from errors in the object candidate generation process, such as too small or shifted boxes. Read More

Backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS) with Langmuir decay instability (LDI) and Langmuir collapse has been researched by Vlasov simulation for the first time. The decay productions of LDI cascade and their evolution with time is clearly demonstrated, which occurs simultaneously with Langmuir collapse. The BSRS reflectivity will be decreased largely through LDI cascade and Langmuir collapse. Read More

Based on the random matrix model, we can build statistical models using massive datasets across the power grid, and employ hypothesis testing for anomaly detection. First, the aim of this paper is to make the first attempt to apply the recent free probability result in extracting big data analytics, in particular data fusion. The nature of this work is basic in that new algorithms and analytics tools are proposed to pave the way for the future's research. Read More

The magnetic correlations within the cuprates have undergone intense scrutiny as part of efforts to understand high temperature superconductivity. We explore the evolution of the magnetic correlations along the nodal direction of the Brillouin zone in La2-xSrxCuO4, spanning the doping phase diagram from the anti-ferromagnetic Mott insulator at x = 0 to the metallic phase at x = 0.26. It is well known that learning customers' preference and making recommendations to them from today's information-exploded environment is critical and non-trivial in an on-line system. There are two different modes of recommendation systems, namely pull-mode and push-mode. The majority of the recommendation systems are pull-mode, which recommend items to users only when and after users enter Application Market. Read More

A Semantic Compositional Network (SCN) is developed for image captioning, in which semantic concepts (i.e., tags) are detected from the image, and the probability of each tag is used to compose the parameters in a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. Read More
