Motivated by product detection in supermarkets, this paper studies the problem of object proposal generation in supermarket images and other natural images. We argue that estimation of object scales in images is helpful for generating object proposals, especially for supermarket images where object scales are usually within a small range. Therefore, we propose to estimate object scales of images before generating object proposals. Read More

Channel feedback is essential in frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Unfortunately, previous work on multiuser MIMO has shown that the codebook size for channel feedback should scale exponentially with the number of base station (BS) antennas, which is greatly increased in massive MIMO systems. To reduce the codebook size and feedback overhead, we propose an angle-of-departure (AoD)-adaptive subspace codebook for channel feedback in FDD massive MIMO systems. Read More

In the field of connectomics, neuroscientists seek to identify cortical connectivity comprehensively. Neuronal boundary detection from the Electron Microscopy (EM) images is often done to assist the automatic reconstruction of neuronal circuit. But the segmentation of EM images is a challenging problem, as it requires the detector to be able to detect both filament-like thin and blob-like thick membrane, while suppressing the ambiguous intracellular structure. Junctions play an important role in the characterization of local geometric structures in images, the detection of which is a longstanding and challenging task. Existing junction detectors usually focus on identifying the junction locations and the orientations of the junction branches while ignoring their scales; however, these scales also contain rich geometric information. This paper presents a novel approach to junction detection and characterization that exploits the locally anisotropic geometries of a junction and estimates the scales of these geometries using an \emph{a contrario} model. The number of radio frequency (RF) chains can be reduced through beam selection in lens-based millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, where the equivalent channel between RF chains and multiple users is required at the BS to achieve the multi-user multiplexing gain. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no dedicated codebook for the equivalent channel feedback in such systems. In this paper, we propose the dimension-reduced subspace codebook, which achieves a significant reduction of the feedback overhead and codebook size. Read More

The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. Read More

Label distribution learning (LDL) is a general learning framework, which assigns a distribution over a set of labels to an instance rather than a single label or multiple labels. Current LDL methods have either restricted assumptions on the expression form of the label distribution or limitations in representation learning. This paper presents label distribution learning forests (LDLFs) - a novel label distribution learning algorithm based on differentiable decision trees, which have several advantages: 1) Decision trees have the potential to model any general form of label distributions by the mixture of leaf node predictions. A version of the singular Yamabe problem in bounded domains yields complete conformal metrics with negative constant scalar curvatures. In this paper, we study whether these metrics have negative Ricci curvatures. We provide a general construction of domains in compact manifolds and demonstrate that the negativity of Ricci curvatures does not hold if the boundary is close to certain sets of low dimension. We present measurements of three-particle correlations for various harmonics in Au+Au collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The quantity $\langle\cos(m\phi_1+n\phi_2-(m+n)\phi_3)\rangle$ is evaluated as a function of $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}$, collision centrality, transverse momentum, $p_T$, pseudo-rapidity difference, $\Delta\eta$, and harmonics ($m$ and $n$). We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations $\langle \cos (m\phi_1 + n\phi_2 - (m+n) \phi_3)\rangle$ for charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We find evidence for correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. Read More

We study topological structure of the $\omega$-limit sets of the skew-product semiflow generated by the following scalar reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2\pi \mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f(t,u,u_x)$ is $C^2$-admissible with time-recurrent structure including almost-periodicity and almost-automorphy. Contrary to the time-periodic cases (for which any $\omega$-limit set can be imbedded into a periodically forced circle flow), it is shown that one cannot expect that any $\omega$-limit set can be imbedded into an almost-periodically forced circle flow even if $f$ is uniformly almost-periodic in $t$. More precisely, we prove that, for a given $\omega$-limit set $\Omega$, if ${\rm dim}V^c(\Omega)\leq 1$ ($V^c(\Omega)$ is the center space associated with $\Omega$), then $\Omega$ is either spatially-homogeneous or spatially-inhomogeneous; and moreover, any spatially-inhomogeneous $\Omega$ can be imbedded into a time-recurrently forced circle flow (resp. We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. Read More

We study traveling wave solutions of the following chemotaxis systems,$$\begin{cases}u_t=\Delta u-\chi_1\nabla(u\nabla v_1)+\chi_2\nabla(u\nabla v_2)+u(a-bu),\ x\in\mathbb{R}^N\\ 0=\Delta v_1-\lambda_1v_1+\mu_1u,\ x\in\mathbb{R}^N,\\ 0=\Delta v_2-\lambda_2v_2+\mu_2u,\ x\in\mathbb{R}^N,\end{cases}$$where $u(x,t), v_1(x,t)$ and $v_2(x,t)$ represent the population densities of a mobile species, a chemoattractant, and a chemo-repulsion, respectively. In an earlier work, we proved that there is a constant $K\geq0$ such that if $b+\chi_2\mu_2>\chi_1\mu_1+K$, then the steady solution $(\frac{a}{b},\frac{a\mu_1}{b\lambda_1},\frac{a\mu_2}{b\lambda_2})$ is asymptotically stable with respect to positive perturbations. In this paper, we prove that if $b+\chi_2\mu_2>\chi_1\mu_1+K$, then there exist a number $c^*(\chi_1,\mu_1,\lambda_1,\chi_2,\mu_2,\lambda_2)\geq 2\sqrt a$ such that for every $c\in ( c^*(\chi_1,\mu_1,\lambda_1,\chi_2,\mu_2,\lambda_2) , \infty)$ and $\xi\in S^{N-1}$, the system has a traveling wave solution $(u,v_1,v_2)=(U(x\cdot\xi-ct),V_1(x\cdot\xi-ct),V_2(x\cdot\xi-ct))$ with speed $c$ connecting the constant solutions $(\frac{a}{b},\frac{a\mu_1}{b\lambda_1},\frac{a\mu_2}{b\lambda_2})$ and $(0,0,0)$, and it does not have such traveling wave solutions of speed less than $2\sqrt a$. Face attributes are interesting due to their detailed description of human faces. Unlike prior researches working on attribute prediction, we address an inverse and more challenging problem called face attribute manipulation which aims at modifying a face image according to a given attribute value. Instead of manipulating the whole image, we propose to learn the corresponding residual image defined as the difference between images before and after the manipulation. Read More

We consider the following chemotaxis systems $$\begin{cases}u_t=\Delta u-\chi_1\nabla(u\nabla v_1)+\chi_2\nabla(u\nabla v_2)+u(a-bu),\ \ x\in\mathbb R^N,t>0,\\0=(\Delta-\lambda_1I)v_1+\mu_1u,\ \ x\in\mathbb R^N,t>0,\\0=(\Delta-\lambda_2I)v_2+\mu_2u,\ \ \text{in}\ x\in\mathbb R^N,\ t>0,\\u(\cdot,0)=u_0,\ \ x\in\mathbb R^N,\end{cases}$$where $\chi_i,\ \lambda_i,\ \mu_i,\ i=1,2$ and $a,\ b$ are positive constant real numbers and $N$ is a positive integer. Under some conditions on the parameters, we prove the global existence and boundedness of classical solutions $(u(x,t;u_0),v_1(x,t;u_0),v_2(x,t;u_0))$ for nonnegative, bounded, and uniformly continuous initials $u_0(x)$. Next, we show that, for every strictly positive initial \,$u_0(x)$,$$\lim_{t\to\infty}\left[\|u(\cdot,t;u_0)-\frac{a}{b}\|_{\infty}+\|\lambda_1v_1(\cdot,t;u_0)-\frac{a}{b}\mu_1\|_{\infty}+\|\lambda_2v_2(\cdot,t;u_0)-\frac{a}{b}\mu_2\|_{\infty}\right]=0. In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps. We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for mid-rapidity di-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The di-jet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. $A_{LL}$ results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. The current paper is devoted to the study of traveling wave solutions of the following parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis systems, $$ \begin{cases} u_{t}= \Delta u-\chi \nabla \cdot (u \nabla v) + u(a-bu),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N \tau v_t=\Delta v-v+u, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N, \end{cases} $$ where $u(x,t)$ represents the population density of a mobile species and $v(x,t)$ represents the population density of a chemoattractant, and $\chi$ represents the chemotaxis sensitivity. We prove that for every $\tau >0$, there is $0<\chi_{\tau}^*<\frac{b}{2}$ such that for every $0<\chi<\chi_{\tau}^*$, there exist two positive numbers $2\sqrt a \le c^{*}(\chi,\tau)Read More

In this review, we develop the formalism employed to describe charge-density-wave insulators in pump/probe experiments using ultra short driving pulses of light. The theory emphasizes exact results in the simplest model for a charge-density wave insulator (given by a noninteracting systems with two bands and a gap) and by employing nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory to solve the Falicov-Kimball model in its ordered phase. We show both how to develop the formalism and how the solutions behave. Read More

Recovery from the Flint Water Crisis has been hindered by uncertainty in both the water testing process and the causes of contamination. In this work, we develop an ensemble of predictive models to assess the risk of lead contamination in individual homes and neighborhoods. To train these models, we utilize a wide range of data sources, including voluntary residential water tests, historical records, and city infrastructure data. Read More

In this paper, we study the spreading speeds and traveling wave solutions of the PDE $$ \begin{cases} u_{t}= \Delta u-\chi \nabla \cdot (u \nabla v) + u(1-u),\ \ x\in\mathbb{R}^N 0=\Delta v-v+u, \ \ x\in\mathbb{R}^N, \end{cases} $$ where $u(x,t)$ and $v(x,t)$ represent the population and the chemoattractant densities, respectively, and $\chi$ is the chemotaxis sensitivity. It has been shown in an earlier work by the authors of the current paper that, when $0<\chi<1$, for every nonnegative uniformly continuous and bounded function $u_0(x)$, the system has a unique globally bounded classical solution $(u(x,t;u_0),v(x,t;u_0))$ with initial condition $u(x,0;u_0)=u_0(x)$. Furthermore, if $0<\chi<\frac{1}{2}$, then the constant steady-state solution $(1,1)$ is asymptotically stable with respect to strictly positive perturbations. Read More

This paper is concerned with the stability of transition waves and strictly positive entire solutions of random and nonlocal dispersal evolution equations of Fisher-KPP type with general time and space dependence, including time and space periodic or almost periodic dependence as special cases. We first show the existence, uniqueness, and stability of strictly positive entire solutions of such equations. Next, we show the stability of uniformly continuous transition waves connecting the unique strictly positive entire solution and the trivial solution zero and satisfying certain decay property at the end close to the trivial solution zero (if it exists). We report the first di-jet transverse momentum asymmetry measurements from Au+Au and p+p collisions at RHIC. The two highest-energy back-to-back jets reconstructed from fragments with transverse momenta above 2 GeV/c display a significantly stronger momentum imbalance in heavy-ion collisions than in the p+p reference. When re-examined with correlated soft particles included, we observe that these di-jets then exhibit a unique new feature -- momentum balance is restored to that observed in p+p for a jet resolution parameter of R=0. Object skeletons are useful for object representation and object detection. They are complementary to the object contour, and provide extra information, such as how object scale (thickness) varies among object parts. But object skeleton extraction from natural images is very challenging, because it requires the extractor to be able to capture both local and non-local image context in order to determine the scale of each skeleton pixel. This paper considers the dynamics of the following chemotaxis system $$ \begin{cases} u_t=\Delta u-\chi\nabla (u\cdot \nabla v)+u\left(a_0(t,x)-a_1(t,x)u-a_2(t,x)\int_{\Omega}u\right),\quad x\in \Omega\cr 0=\Delta v+ u-v,\quad x\in \Omega \quad \cr \frac{\partial u}{\partial n}=\frac{\partial v}{\partial n}=0,\quad x\in\partial\Omega, \end{cases} $$ where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n(n\geq 1)$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary $\partial\Omega$ and $a_i(t,x)$ ($i=0,1,2$) are locally H\"older continuous in $t\in\mathbb{R}$ uniformly with respect to $x\in\bar{\Omega}$ and continuous in $x\in\bar{\Omega}$. We first prove the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions $(u(x,t;t_0,u_0),v(x,t;t_0,u_0))$ with $u(x,t_0;t_0,u_0)=u_0(x)$ for various initial functions $u_0(x)$. Next, under some conditions on the coefficients $a_1(t,x)$, $a_2(t,x)$, $\chi$ and $n$, we prove the global existence and boundedness of classical solutions $(u(x,t;t_0,u_0),v(x,t;t_0,u_0))$ with given nonnegative initial function $u(x,t_0;t_0,u_0)=u_0(x)$. We present a measurement of the inclusive production of Upsilon mesons in U+U collisions at 193 GeV at mid-rapidity (|y| < 1). Previous studies in central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV show a suppression of Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) production relative to expectations from the Upsilon yield in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll), with an indication that the Upsilon(1S) state is also suppressed. The present measurement extends the number of participant nucleons in the collision (Npart) by 20% compared to Au+Au collisions, and allows us to study a system with higher energy density. Read More

We present the first measurement of charge-dependent directed flow in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The results are presented as a function of the particle transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for different centralities. A finite difference between the directed flow of positive and negative charged particles is observed that qualitatively agrees with the expectations from the effects of the initial strong electric field between two colliding ions with different nuclear charges. In the current paper, we consider the following parabolic-elliptic semilinear Keller-Segel model on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_{t}=\nabla\cdot (\nabla u-\chi u\nabla v)+a u -b u^{2}, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N,\,\, t>0 0=(\Delta- I)v+ u, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N,\,\, t>0, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $ \chi >0, \ a\geq 0,\ b> 0$ are constant real numbers and $N$ is a positive integer. We first prove the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions $(u(x,t;u_0),v(x,t;u_0))$ with $u(x,0;u_0)=u_0(x)$ for various initial functions $u_0(x)$. Next, under some conditions on the constants $a, b, \chi$ and the dimension $N$, we prove the global existence and boundedness of classical solution $(u(x,t;u_0),v(x,t;u_0))$ for given initial functions $u_0(x)$. The current paper is devoted to the study of spreading speeds and transition fronts of lattice KPP equations in time heterogeneous media. We first prove the existence, uniqueness, and stability of spatially homogeneous entire positive solutions. Next, we establish lower and upper bounds of the (generalized) spreading speed intervals. The current paper {establishes} criteria for the existence of principal eigenvalues of time periodic cooperative linear nonlocal dispersal systems with Direchlet type, Neumann type or periodic type boundary conditions. It is shown that such a nonlocal dispersal system has a principal eigenvalue in the following cases: the nonlocal dispersal distance is sufficiently small; the spatial inhomogeneity satisfies a so called vanishing condition; or the spatial inhomogeneity is nearly globally homogeneous. Moreover, it is shown that the principal eigenvalue of a time periodic cooperative linear nonlocal dispersal system (if it exists) is algebraically simple. Read More

Contour and skeleton are two complementary representations for shape recognition. However combining them in a principal way is nontrivial, as they are generally abstracted by different structures (closed string vs graph), respectively. This paper aims at addressing the shape recognition problem by combining contour and skeleton according to the correspondence between them. Read More

The channel feedback overhead for massive MIMO systems with a large number of base station (BS) antennas is very high, since the number of feedback bits of traditional codebooks scales linearly with the number of BS antennas. To reduce the feedback overhead, an effective codebook based on channel statistics has been designed, where the required number of feedback bits only scales linearly with the rank of the channel correlation matrix. However, this attractive conclusion was only intuitively explained and then verified through simulation results in the literature, while no rigorous theoretical proof has been provided. Read More

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for text detec- tion in natural images. Both local and global cues are taken into account for localizing text lines in a coarse-to-fine pro- cedure. First, a Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) model is trained to predict the salient map of text regions in a holistic manner. Read More

Object skeleton is a useful cue for object detection, complementary to the object contour, as it provides a structural representation to describe the relationship among object parts. While object skeleton extraction in natural images is a very challenging problem, as it requires the extractor to be able to capture both local and global image context to determine the intrinsic scale of each skeleton pixel. Existing methods rely on per-pixel based multi-scale feature computation, which results in difficult modeling and high time consumption. Read More

We present measurements of the near-side of triggered di-hadron correlations using neutral strange baryons ($\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$) and mesons ($K^0_S$) at intermediate transverse momentum (3 $<$ $p_T$ $<$ 6 GeV/$c$) to look for possible flavor and baryon/meson dependence. This study is performed in $d$+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The near-side di-hadron correlation contains two structures, a peak which is narrow in azimuth and pseudorapidity consistent with correlations due to jet fragmentation, and a correlation in azimuth which is broad in pseudorapidity. We study asymptotic behaviors of solutions $f$ to the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs in the hyperbolic space with singular asymptotic boundaries under the assumption that the boundaries are piecewise regular with positive curvatures. We derive an estimate of such solutions by the corresponding solutions in the intersections of interior tangent balls. The positivity of curvatures plays an important role. Read More

With proper management, Autonomous Mobility-on-Demand (AMoD) systems have great potential to satisfy the transport demands of urban populations by providing safe, convenient, and affordable ridesharing services. Meanwhile, such systems can substantially decrease private car ownership and use, and thus significantly reduce traffic congestion, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. To achieve this objective, an AMoD system requires private information about the demand from passengers. Read More

We prove that any $C^{1+BV}$ degree $d \geq 2$ circle covering $h$ having all periodic orbits weakly expanding, is conjugate in the same smoothness class to a metrically expanding map. We use this to connect the space of parabolic external maps (coming from the theory of parabolic-like maps) to metrically expanding circle coverings. Read More

In this paper, we study the spectral theory for nonlocal dispersal operators with time periodic indefinite weight functions subject to Dirichlet type, Neumann type and spatial periodic type boundary conditions. We first obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique positive principal spectrum point for such operators. We then investigate upper bounds of principal spectrum points and sufficient conditions for the principal spectrum points to be principal eigenvalues. Read More

The spatial development of hadronic showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter is studied using test beam data collected at CERN and FNAL for single positive pions and protons with initial momenta in the range from 10 to 80 GeV/c. Both longitudinal and radial development of hadron showers are parametrised with two-component functions. The parametrisation is fit to test beam data and simulations using the QGSP_BERT and FTFP_BERT physics lists from Geant4 version 9. Read More
