Rectifier neuron units (ReLUs) have been widely used in deep convolutional networks. An ReLU converts negative values to zeros, and does not change positive values, which leads to a high sparsity of neurons. In this work, we first examine the sparsity of the outputs of ReLUs in some popular deep convolutional architectures. Read More

Jet energy loss in heavy ion collisions, as quantified by the traditional observable of high $p_T$ hadron's nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$, provides highly informative "imaging" of the hot medium created in heavy ion collisions. There are now comprehensive sets of available data, from average suppression to azimuthal anisotropy, from light to heavy flavors, from RHIC 200GeV to LHC 2.76TeV as well as 5. Read More

In this contribution we report a recently developed Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD) framework, which simulates the evolution of fermion currents in QGP on top of the bulk expansion from data-validated VISHNU hydrodynamics. With reasonable estimates of initial conditions and magnetic field lifetime, the predicted CME signal is quantitatively consistent with change separation measurements in 200GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC. We further develop the event-by-event AVFD simulations that allow direct evaluation of two-particle correlations arising from CME signal as well as the non-CME backgrounds. Read More

A fundamental feature of microscopic quantum theories for massless spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions is the chiral anomaly. Recently there has been significant interest in the study of macroscopic manifestation of chiral anomaly in many-body systems of such fermions through induced anomalous chiral transport processes. A notable example is the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) where a vector current (e. Read More

The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. Read More

Many recent deep learning platforms rely on third-party libraries (such as cuBLAS) to utilize the computing power of modern hardware accelerators (such as GPUs). However, we observe that they may achieve suboptimal performance because the library functions are not used appropriately. In this paper, we target at optimizing the operations of multiplying a matrix with the transpose of another matrix (referred to as NT operation hereafter), which contribute about half of the training time of fully connected deep neural networks. This paper revisit and extend the interesting case of bounds on the Q-factor for a given directivity for a small antenna of arbitrary shape. A higher directivity in a small antenna is closely connected with a narrow impedance bandwidth. The relation between bandwidth and a desired directivity is still not fully understood, not even for small antennas. Read More

We present measurements of three-particle correlations for various harmonics in Au+Au collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The quantity $\langle\cos(m\phi_1+n\phi_2-(m+n)\phi_3)\rangle$ is evaluated as a function of $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}$, collision centrality, transverse momentum, $p_T$, pseudo-rapidity difference, $\Delta\eta$, and harmonics ($m$ and $n$). We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations $\langle \cos (m\phi_1 + n\phi_2 - (m+n) \phi_3)\rangle$ for charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We find evidence for correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. Read More

We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. Read More

Are quantum states real? This most fundamental question in quantum mechanics has not yet been satisfactorily resolved, although its realistic interpretation seems to have been rejected by various delayed-choice experiments. Here, to address this long-standing issue, we present a quantum twisted double-slit experiment. By exploiting the subluminal feature of twisted photons, the real nature of a photon during its time in flight is revealed for the first time. Read More

Multi-photon entangled states play a crucial role in quantum information applications such as secure quantum communication, scalable computation, and high-precision quantum metrology. Quantum memory for entangled states is a key component of quantum repeaters, which are indispensable in realizing quantum communications. Storing a single photon or an entangled photon has been realized through different protocols. Read More

We study analytically and numerically stability and interaction patterns of quantized vortex lattices governed by the reduced dynamical law -- a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) -- in superconductivity. By deriving several non-autonomous first integrals of the ODEs, we obtain qualitatively dynamical properties of a cluster of quantized vortices, including global existence, finite time collision, equilibrium solution and invariant solution manifolds. For a vortex lattice with 3 vortices, we establish orbital stability when they have the same winding number and find different collision patterns when they have different winding numbers. Read More

We present a study of the magnetic dynamics associated with nanosecond scale magnetic switching driven by the spin Hall effect in 3-terminal nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions (3T-MTJs) with in-plane magnetization. Utilizing fast pulse measurements in a variety of material stacks and detailed micromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate that this unexpectedly fast and reliable magnetic reversal is facilitated by the self-generated Oersted field, and the short-pulse energy efficiency can be substantially enhanced by micromagnetic curvature in the magnetic free layer. The sign of the Oersted field is essential for this enhancement --- in simulations in which we artificially impose a field-like torque with a sign opposite to the effect of the Oersted field, the result is a much slower and stochastic switching process that is reminiscent of the so-called incubation delay in conventional 2-terminal spin-torque-switched MTJs. A spatial light modulator (SLM) is one of the most useful and convenient device to generate structural light beams such as twisted light and complexed images used in modern optical science. The unbounded dimension of twisted light makes it promising in harnessing information carrying ability of a single photon, which greatly enhances the channel capacity in optical communications. We perform a detail theoretical study of the birth, evolution and reverse transformation of twisted light generated from a phase-only SLM based on diffraction theory, analytical expressions are obtained to show the special evolution behaviors of the light beam with the propagation distance. Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is the macroscopic manifestation of the fundamental chiral anomaly in a many-body system of chiral fermions, and emerges as anomalous transport current in the fluid dynamics framework. Experimental observation of CME is of great interest and has been reported in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Significant efforts have also been made to search for CME in heavy ion collisions. Read More

We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for mid-rapidity di-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The di-jet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. $A_{LL}$ results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. In this paper, we consider the decoy-state Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) with four intensities. The average value of successful events and bit errors among the pulse pair set be used to investigate the successful events of different pulses under the statistical fluctuation caused by the finite condition. We demonstrate that the lower bound of successful events number n11estimated by our method can be more tight than the result in [28]. Read More

The terahertz and far-infrared (FIR) band, from approximately 0.3 THz to 15 THz (1 mm to 20 micron), is important for astrophysics as the thermal radiation of much of the universe peaks at these wavelengths and many spectral lines that trace the cycle of interstellar matter also lie within this band. However, water vapor renders the terrestrial atmosphere opaque to this frequency band over nearly all of the Earth's surface. Read More

We present the recent results of strangeness production at the mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at RHIC, from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV. The $v_2$ of multi-strange baryon $\Omega$ and $\phi$ mesons are similar to that of pions and protons in the intermediate $p_T$ range (2 - 5 GeV/$c$) in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions, indicating that the major part of collective flow has been built up at partonic stage. We report the first di-jet transverse momentum asymmetry measurements from Au+Au and p+p collisions at RHIC. The two highest-energy back-to-back jets reconstructed from fragments with transverse momenta above 2 GeV/c display a significantly stronger momentum imbalance in heavy-ion collisions than in the p+p reference. When re-examined with correlated soft particles included, we observe that these di-jets then exhibit a unique new feature -- momentum balance is restored to that observed in p+p for a jet resolution parameter of R=0. Depending on deformed canonical anti-commutation relations, massless neutrino oscillation based on Lorentz invariance violation in non-commutative field theory is discussed. It is found that the previous studies about massless neutrino oscillation within deformed canonical anti-commutation relations should satisfy the condition of new Moyal product and new non standard commutation relations. Furthermore, comparing the Lorentz Invariant Violation parameters $\mathit{A}$ in the previous studies with new Moyal product and new non standard commutation relations, we find that the orders of magnitude of non-commutative parameters (Lorentz invariant Violation parameters $\mathit{A}$) is not self-consistent. We present a measurement of the inclusive production of Upsilon mesons in U+U collisions at 193 GeV at mid-rapidity (|y| < 1). Previous studies in central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV show a suppression of Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) production relative to expectations from the Upsilon yield in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll), with an indication that the Upsilon(1S) state is also suppressed. The present measurement extends the number of participant nucleons in the collision (Npart) by 20% compared to Au+Au collisions, and allows us to study a system with higher energy density. Read More

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entangled quantum state is of special importance not only for fundamental researches in quantum mechanics, but also for information processing in quantum information field. Establishing EPR entanglement between two memory systems, such as atomic ensembles, Nitrogen-vacancy centers, rare-earth-ion-doped solids, etc, is very important for realizing quantum communication, quantum computation and quantum imaging. So far, there have been few reports on the realization of EPR entanglement in true position and momentum bases between two memory systems. Read More

We report measurements of the thickness and temperature (T) dependencies of current-induced spin-orbit torques, especially the field-like (FL) component, in various heavy metal (HM)/normal metal (NM) spacer/ferromagnet (FM)/Oxide (MgO and HfOx/MgO) heterostructures. The FL torque in these samples originates from spin current generated by the spin Hall effect (SHE) in the HM. For a FM layer sufficiently thin that a substantial portion of this spin current can reach the FM/Oxide interface, T-dependent spin scattering there can yield a strong FL torque that is, in some cases, opposite in sign to that exerted at the NM/FM interface. We present the first measurement of charge-dependent directed flow in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The results are presented as a function of the particle transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for different centralities. A finite difference between the directed flow of positive and negative charged particles is observed that qualitatively agrees with the expectations from the effects of the initial strong electric field between two colliding ions with different nuclear charges. Optical fields with orbital angular momentum (OAM) interact with medium have many remarkable properties with its unique azimuthal phase, showing many potential applications in high capacity information processing, high precision measurement etc. The dephasing mechanics of optical fields with OAM in an interface between light and matter plays a vital role in many areas of physics. In this work, we study the transverse azimuthal dephasing of OAM spin wave in a hot atomic gas via OAM storage. Read More

The inclusive $J/\psi$ transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) spectra and nuclear modification factors are reported at midrapidity ($|y|<1.0$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV taken by the STAR experiment. Read More

Let $k\ge 1$ and let $N_{k}(B)$ denote the number of solutions of the equation $n_1\ldots n_{k+1} =n_{k+2}\ldots n_{2(k+1)}$ with unknowns verifying $1\le n_i\le B$,$1\le i\le 2(k+1)$. When $k=1$, very precise estimates are known. When $k\ge 2$, we prove using elementary arithmetic that $ B^{k+1}(\log B)^{k^2}\ll_k N_{k}(B) \ll_k B^{k+1}\big(\log B\big)^{k^2+2k-2}. Read More

Strange hadrons, especially multi-strange hadrons are good probes for the early partonic stage of heavy ion collisions due to their small hadronic cross sections. In this paper, I give a brief review on the elliptic flow measurements of strange and multi-strange hadrons in relativistic heavy ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. Read More

Entanglement is a vital resource for realizing many tasks such as teleportation, secure key distribution, metrology and quantum computations. To effectively build entanglement between different quantum systems and share information between them, a frequency transducer to convert between quantum states of different wavelengths while retaining its quantum features is indispensable. Information encoded in the photons orbital angular momentum OAM degrees of freedom is preferred in harnessing the information carrying capacity of a single photon because of its unlimited dimensions. The (1, 0)+(0, 1) representation of the group SL(2, C) provides a six-component spinor equivalent to the electromagnetic field tensor. By means of the (1, 0)+(0, 1) description, one can treat the photon field in curved spacetime via spin connection and the tetrad formalism, which is of great advantage to study the gravitational spin-orbit coupling of photons. Once the gravitational spin-orbit coupling is taken into account, the traditional radius of the circular photon orbit in the Schwarzschild geometry should be replaced with two different radiuses corresponding to the photons with the helicities of +1 and -1, respectively. Classical correlation can be locked via quantum means--quantum data locking. With a short secret key, one can lock an exponentially large amount of information, in order to make it inaccessible to unauthorized users without the key. Quantum data locking presents a resource-efficient alternative to one-time pad encryption which requires a key no shorter than the message. Read More

Guided waves and surface waves can be taken as two typical examples of structured optical fields with the transverse spin. Analytical derivations are developed to demonstrate that (i) guided waves also carry the transverse spin that depends on the mean direction of propagation, which may have important applications in spin-dependent unidirectional optical interfaces; (ii) the quantization form of the transverse spin is for the first time revealed, which is not obvious and related to an ellipticity; (iii) from a unified point of view, the transverse spin can be attributed to the presence of an effective rest mass of structured optical fields; (iv) the transverse spin can also be described by the spin matrix of the photon field; (v) unlike a free optical field whose spin projection on the propagation direction is the only observable, owing to the effective rest mass, the spin projection of structured optical fields on other directions is also an observable, such that one can develop an optical analogy of spintronics. A preliminary idea about the potential applications of the transverse spin is presented, but an in-depth and complete study will be presented in our next work. Read More

Effectively manipulating magnetism in ferromagnet (FM) thin film nanostructures with an in-plane current has become feasible since the determination of a 'giant' spin Hall effect (SHE) in certain heavy metal (HM)/FM system. Recently, both theoretical and experimental reports indicate that the non-collinear and collinear metallic antiferromagnet (AF) materials can have both a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and a strong SHE. Here we report a systematic study of the SHE in PtMn with several PtMn/FM systems. Read More

High quality WSe2 films have been grown on bilayer graphene (BLG) with layer-by-layer control of thickness using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The combination of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), and optical absorption measurements reveal the atomic and electronic structures evolution and optical response of WSe2/BLG. We observe that a bilayer of WSe2 is a direct bandgap semiconductor, when integrated in a BLG-based heterostructure, thus shifting the direct-indirect band gap crossover to trilayer WSe2. Read More

We present measurements of the near-side of triggered di-hadron correlations using neutral strange baryons ($\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$) and mesons ($K^0_S$) at intermediate transverse momentum (3 $<$ $p_T$ $<$ 6 GeV/$c$) to look for possible flavor and baryon/meson dependence. This study is performed in $d$+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The near-side di-hadron correlation contains two structures, a peak which is narrow in azimuth and pseudorapidity consistent with correlations due to jet fragmentation, and a correlation in azimuth which is broad in pseudorapidity. We report on the measurement of $\rm{J}/\psi$ production in the dielectron channel at mid-rapidity (|y|<1) in p+p and d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV from the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The transverse momentum $p_{T}$ spectra in p+p for $p_{T}$ < 4 GeV/c and d+Au collisions for $p_{T}$ < 3 GeV/c are presented. These measurements extend the STAR coverage for $\rm{J}/\psi$ production in p+p collisions to low $p_{T}$. Read More

The base station (BS) in a multi-channel cognitive radio (CR) network has to broadcast to secondary (or unlicensed) receivers/users on more than one broadcast channels via channel hopping (CH), because a single broadcast channel can be reclaimed by the primary (or licensed) user, leading to broadcast failures. Meanwhile, a secondary receiver needs to synchronize its clock with the BS's clock to avoid broadcast failures caused by the possible clock drift between the CH sequences of the secondary receiver and the BS. In this paper, we propose a CH-based broadcast protocol called SASS, which enables a BS to successfully broadcast to secondary receivers over multiple broadcast channels via channel hopping.
