We report the first measurement of the fraction of $J/\psi$ mesons coming from $B$-meson decay ($F_{B{\rightarrow}J/\psi}$) in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 510 GeV. The measurement is performed using the forward silicon vertex detector and central vertex detector at PHENIX, which provide precise tracking and distance-of-closest-approach determinations, enabling the statistical separation of $J/\psi$ due to $B$-meson decays from prompt $J/\psi$. The measured value of $F_{B{\rightarrow}J/\psi}$ is 8. Read More

Two dimensional systems offer a unique platform to study light matter interaction at the nanoscale. In this work we report on robust quantum emitters fabricated by thermal oxidation of tungsten disulphide multilayers. The emitters show robust, optically stable, linearly polarized luminescence at room temperature, can be modeled using a three level system, and exhibit moderate bunching. Read More

We obtain a closed form of generating functions of RNA substructure using hermitian matrix model with the Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind, which turns out to be the hypergeometric function. To match the experimental findings of the statistical behavior, we regard the substructure as a grand canonical ensemble and find its fugacity value. We also suggest a hierarchical picture based on the planar structure so that the non-planar structure such as pseudoknot are included. Read More

We give a representation theoretic interpretation of the Lascoux's expansion of a non-symmetric Cauchy kernel $\prod_{i+ j\leq n+1}(1-x_iy_j)^{-1}$ given in terms of Demazure characters and atoms. We also give a simple bijective proof of the non-symmetric Cauchy identity using the crystal of Lakshmibai-Seshdri paths, and extend it to the case of continuous crystals. Read More

We report the first observation of the polarization of $\Lambda/\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. We report the first search for the $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ glueball in $\Upsilon(1S)$ and $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays with data samples of $(102\pm2)$ million and $(158\pm4)$ million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. No significant signals are observed in any of the proposed production modes, and the 90\% credibility level upper limits on their branching fractions in $\Upsilon(1S)$ and $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays are obtained. The inclusive branching fractions of the $\Upsilon(1S)$ and $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays into final states with a $\chi_{c1}$ are measured to be $\BR(\Upsilon(1S)\to \chi_{c1}+ anything) = (1. Read More

In dimension $d=4, 5, 6, 7$, we find the first examples of complete finite volume hyperbolic $d$-dimensional manifolds $M$ with cusps such that an infinite number of orbifolds $M_{m}$ obtained by generalized Dehn fillings on $M$ admit a properly convex real projective structure. The manifolds $M$ are covering of hyperbolic Coxeter orbifolds and the orbifold fundamental groups $\Gamma_m$ of $M_m$ are Gromov hyperbolic relative to a collection of subgroups virtually isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^{d-2}$. The competition between interactions in frustrated magnets allows a wide variety of new ground states, often exhibiting emergent physics and unique excitations. Expanding the suite of lattices available for study enhances our chances of finding exotic physics. Mn$_2$Sb$_2$O$_7$ forms in a chiral, kagome-based structure in which a fourth member is added to the kagome-plane triangles to form an armchair unit and link adjacent kagome planes. Read More

Density functional theory has been an essential analysis tool for both theoretical and experimental chemists since accurate hybrid functionals were developed. Here we propose a local hybrid method derived from the optimized effective potential (OEP) method and compare its distinct features with conventional nonlocal ones from the Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange operator. Both are formally exact for ground states and thus show similar accuracy for atomization energies and reaction barrier heights. Read More

Understanding quantum dynamics away from equilibrium is an outstanding challenge in the modern physical sciences. It is well known that out-of-equilibrium systems can display a rich array of phenomena, ranging from self-organized synchronization to dynamical phase transitions. More recently, advances in the controlled manipulation of isolated many-body systems have enabled detailed studies of non-equilibrium phases in strongly interacting quantum matter. Read More

The charge and magnetic form factors, FC and FM, of 3He have been extracted in the kinematic range 25 fm-2 < Q2 < 61 fm-2 from elastic electron scattering by detecting 3He recoil nuclei and electrons in coincidence with the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility at Jefferson Lab. The measurements are indicative of a second diffraction minimum for the magnetic form factor, which was predicted in the Q2 range of this experiment, and of a continuing diffractive structure for the charge form factor. The data are in qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations based on realistic interactions and accurate methods to solve the three-body nuclear problem. Read More

We consider thermal production mechanisms of self-interacting dark matter in models with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry. A complex scalar dark matter is stabilized by the $Z_3$, that is the remnant of a local dark $U(1)_d$. Light dark matter with large self-interaction can be produced from thermal freeze-out in the presence of SM-annihilation, SIMP and/or forbidden channels. Read More

Fiber transport of multi-dimensional photonic qudits promises high information capacity per photon without space restriction. This work experimentally demonstrates transmission of spatial qudits through multi-core optical fibers and measurement of the entanglement between two fibers with quantum state analyzers, each composed of a spatial light modulator and a single-mode fiber. Quantum state tomography reconstructs the four-dimension entangled state that verifies the non-locality through concurrences in two-dimensional subspaces and a high-dimensional Bell-type CGLMP inequality. Recently there has been much interest in performing search queries over encrypted data to enable functionality while protecting sensitive data. One particularly efficient mechanism for executing such queries is order-preserving encryption/encoding (OPE) which results in ciphertexts that preserve the relative order of the underlying plaintexts thus allowing range and comparison queries to be performed directly on ciphertexts. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach to range queries over encrypted data that is optimized to support insert-heavy workloads as are common in "big data" applications while still maintaining search functionality and achieving stronger security. We present the temperature and polarization angular power spectra measured by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter (ACTPol). We analyze night-time data collected during 2013-14 using two detector arrays at 149 GHz, from 548 deg$^2$ of sky on the celestial equator. We use these spectra, and the spectra measured with the MBAC camera on ACT from 2008-10, in combination with Planck and WMAP data to estimate cosmological parameters from the temperature, polarization, and temperature-polarization cross-correlations. In this paper, a neural network based real-time speech recognition (SR) system is developed using an FPGA for very low-power operation. The implemented system employs two recurrent neural networks (RNNs); one is a speech-to-character RNN for acoustic modeling (AM) and the other is for character-level language modeling (LM). We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters $\bar{\eta}$ and $\xi\kappa$ in the radiative leptonic decay of the $\tau$ lepton using 703 f$\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of $e^+e^-\rightarrow\tau^+\tau^-\rightarrow (\pi^+\pi^0 \bar{\nu})(l^-\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma)$ $(l=e$ or $\mu)$. The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are $\bar{\eta} = -2. Read More

Statistical mechanics underlies our understanding of macroscopic quantum systems. It is based on the assumption that out-of-equilibrium systems rapidly approach their equilibrium states, forgetting any information about their microscopic initial conditions. This fundamental paradigm is challenged by disordered systems, in which a slowdown or even absence of thermalization is expected. Read More

We report a search for $B^{0}\to \eta \eta $ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $698 \,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ containing $753 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to \eta \eta ) = (7.6^{+2. Read More

We propose to measure the photo-production cross section of $J/{\psi}$ near threshold, in search of the recently observed LHCb hidden-charm resonances $P_c$(4380) and $P_c$(4450) consistent with 'pentaquarks'. The observation of these resonances in photo-production will provide strong evidence of the true resonance nature of the LHCb states, distinguishing them from kinematic enhancements. A bremsstrahlung photon beam produced with an 11 GeV electron beam at CEBAF covers the energy range of $J/{\psi}$ production from the threshold photo-production energy of 8. Read More

We present the first technique of passive fingerprinting for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) networks without Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and experience on real environment. Unlike existing work, our method does not rely on the functions of a specific product or DPI of the SCADA protocol. Our inference method, which is based on the intrinsic characteristics of SCADA, first identifies the network port used for the SCADA protocol, then consecutively infers the field devices and master server. We report the first measurement of the $\tau$ lepton polarization in the decay ${\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \tau^- {\bar\nu_{\tau}}$ as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \tau^- {\bar\nu_{\tau}}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\bar\nu_{\ell}})$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays $\tau^- \rightarrow \pi^- \nu_{\tau}$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \rho^- \nu_{\tau}$. We use the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our preliminary results, $R(D^*) = 0. Read More

We study the depolarization dynamics of a dense ensemble of dipolar interacting spins, associated with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. We observe anomalously fast, density-dependent, and non-exponential spin relaxation. To explain these observations, we propose a microscopic model where an interplay of long-range interactions, disorder, and dissipation leads to predictions that are in quantitative agreement with both current and prior experimental results. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a wide bandgap van der Waals material that has recently emerged as promising platform for quantum photonics experiments. In this work we study the formation and localization of narrowband quantum emitters in large flakes (up to tens of microns wide) of hBN. The emitters can be activated in as-grown hBN by electron irradiation or high temperature annealing, and the emitter formation probability can be increased by ion implantation or focused laser irradiation of the as-grown material. In this paper, we focus on the problem of inferring the underlying reward function of an expert given demonstrations, which is often referred to as inverse reinforcement learning (IRL). In particular, we propose a model-free density-based IRL algorithm, named density matching reward learning (DMRL), which does not require model dynamics. The performance of DMRL is analyzed theoretically and the sample complexity is derived. Read More

Water molecules inside G-protein coupled receptor have recently been spotlighted in a series of crystal structures. To decipher the dynamics and functional roles of internal waters in GPCR activity, we studied A$_{\text{2A}}$ adenosine receptor using $\mu$sec-molecular dynamics simulations. Our study finds that the amount of water flux across the transmembrane (TM) domain varies depending on the receptor state, and that the water molecules of the TM channel in the active state flow three times slower than those in the inactive state. The symmetry requirement and the origin of magnetic orders coexisting with superconductivity have been strongly debated issues of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs). Observation of C$_4$-symmetric antiferromagnetism in violation of the inter-band nesting condition of spin-density waves in superconducting ground state will require significant change in our understanding of the mechanism of FeSC. The superconducting material Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs, a bulk version of monolayer FeSC in contact with a perovskite layer with its magnetism ($T_N$ ~ 50 K) and superconductivity ($T_c$ ~ 37 K) coexisting at parent state, has no reported structural orthorhombic distortion and thus makes a perfect system to look for theoretically expected C$_4$ magnetisms. The physics at interfaces between monolayer iron-based superconductors (FeSC) and perovskite substrates has received considerable attention due to the unusually high $T_c$ of ~100 K found recently in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$. It has been suggested that forward-scattering interfacial phonons coupled with the Fe-layer electrons can enhance superconductivity from almost any kind of pre-existing electron-based pairing, initiating a quest for perovskite-clad FeSC monolayers and bulk heterostructures with higher coupling efficiency with interfacial phonons. Here we report a spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy (SI-STM) study on a parent-compound superconductor Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs, the only currently known self-assembled bulk example of FeSC monolayers on perovskite layers with substantially high $T_c$ = 33 - 37 K. We first prove that each valuative and limiting Okounkov bodies of a pseudoeffective divisor which admits the birational good Zariski decomposition is a rational polytope with respect to some admissible flag. This is an extension of the result of Anderson-K\"{u}ronya-Lozovanu about the rational polyhedrality of Okounkov bodies of big divisors with finitely generated section rings. Next, we show when the valuative and limiting Okounkov bodies of an abundant divisor coincide by studying Nakayama subvarieties and Iitaka fibrations. Read More

Advanced ACTPol is an instrument upgrade for the six-meter Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) designed to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization with arcminute-scale angular resolution. To achieve its science goals, Advanced ACTPol utilizes a larger readout multiplexing factor than any previous CMB experiment to measure detector arrays with approximately two thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers in each 150 mm detector wafer. We present the implementation and testing of the Advanced ACTPol time-division multiplexing readout architecture with a 64-row multiplexing factor. Read More

The next generation Advanced ACTPol (AdvACT) experiment is currently underway and will consist of four Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometer arrays, with three operating together, totaling ~5800 detectors on the sky. Building on experience gained with the ACTPol detector arrays, AdvACT will utilize various new technologies, including 150mm detector wafers equipped with multichroic pixels, allowing for a more densely packed focal plane. Each set of detectors includes a feedhorn array of stacked silicon wafers which form a spline profile leading to each pixel. Read More

We report measurements of target- and double-spin asymmetries for the exclusive channel $\vec e\vec p\to e\pi^+ (n)$ in the nucleon resonance region at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). These asymmetries were extracted from data obtained using a longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ target and a longitudinally polarized electron beam with energies 1.1, 1. Read More

In recent years there have been significant improvements in the sensitivity and the angular resolution of the instruments dedicated to the observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). ACTPol is the first polarization receiver for the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and is observing the CMB sky with arcmin resolution over about 2000 sq. deg. Read More

The high pseudo-rapidity region of the CMS muon system is covered by Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC) only and lacks redundant coverage despite the fact that it is a challenging region for muons in terms of backgrounds and momentum resolution. In order to maintain good efficiency for the muon trigger in this region additional RPCs are planned to be installed in the two outermost stations at low angle named RE3/1 and RE4/1. These stations will use RPCs with finer granularity and good timing resolution to mitigate background effects and to increase the redundancy of the system. Read More

Most commonly used \emph{adaptive} algorithms for univariate real-valued function approximation and global minimization lack theoretical guarantees. Our new locally adaptive algorithms are guaranteed to provide answers that satisfy a user-specified absolute error tolerance for a cone, $\mathcal{C}$, of non-spiky input functions in the Sobolev space $W^{2,\infty}[a,b]$. Our algorithms automatically determine where to sample the function---sampling more densely where the second derivative is larger. Read More

We report a study of radiative decays of \chi_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the \chi_{b0}(1P). Read More

Oblivious RAM (ORAM) protocols are powerful techniques that hide a client's data as well as access patterns from untrusted service providers. We present an oblivious cloud storage system, ObliviSync, that specifically targets one of the most widely-used personal cloud storage paradigms: synchronization and backup services, popular examples of which are Dropbox, iCloud Drive, and Google Drive. This setting provides a unique opportunity because the above privacy properties can be achieved with a simpler form of ORAM called write-only ORAM, which allows for dramatically increased efficiency compared to related work. We report the discovery of $\Xi_{c}(3055)^{0}$, observed by its decay into the final state $\Lambda D^{0}$, and present the first observation and evidence of the decays of $\Xi_c(3055)^{+}$ and $\Xi_c(3080)^{+}$ into $\Lambda D^{+}$. We also perform a combined analysis of the $\Lambda D^{+}$ with the $\Sigma_{c}^{++}K^{-}$ and $\Sigma_{c}^{\ast ++}K^{-}$ decay modes to measure the ratios of branching fractions, masses and widths with improved accuracy. We measure the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3055)^{+} \to \Lambda D^{+})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3055)^{+} \to \Sigma_{c}^{++}K^{-})=5. Read More

Recent studies reports that an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) thin slab between a specimen and a substrate contributes in enhancing the spatial resolution of the optical system. Here, we investigate the ENZ thickness dependence of the resolution enhancement. By employing the edge response function, the resolution of the optical system is directly measured when imaging a sharp edge of a metal film. Read More

The CMS experiment, located at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, has a redundant muon system composed by three different detector technologies: Cathode Strip Chambers (in the forward regions), Drift Tubes (in the central region) and Resistive Plate Chambers (both its central and forward regions). All three are used for muon reconstruction and triggering. During the first long shutdown (LS1) of the LHC (2013-2014) the CMS muon system has been upgraded with 144 newly installed RPCs on the forth forward stations. Read More
