Single-image-based view generation (SIVG) is important for producing 3D stereoscopic content. Here, handling different spatial resolutions as input and optimizing both reconstruction accuracy and processing speed is desirable. Latest approaches are based on convolutional neural network (CNN), and they generate promising results. Read More

Motivated by map labeling, we study the problem in which we are given a collection of $n$ disks $D_1, \dots, D_n$ in the plane that grow at possibly different speeds. Whenever two disks meet, the one with the lower index disappears. This problem was introduced by Funke, Krumpe, and Storandt [IWOCA 2016]. Read More

During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals and GW151226, produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). Results are presented from a semi-coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, using data collected during the first Advanced LIGO observing run (O1). The search combines a frequency domain matched filter (Bessel-weighted $\mathcal{F}$-statistic) with a hidden Markov model to track wandering of the neutron star spin frequency. No evidence of gravitational waves is found in the frequency range 60-650 Hz. Read More

Let $k = \mathbb{F}_{q}(T)$ be the rational function field over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, where $q$ is a power of $2$. In this paper we solve the problem of averaging the quadratic $L$-functions $L(s, \chi_{u})$ over fundamental discriminants. Any separable quadratic extension $K$ of $k$ is of the form $K = k(x_{u})$, where $x_{u}$ is a zero of $X^2+X+u=0$ for some $u\in k$. Read More

Let $C$ be the unit circle in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We can view $C$ as a plane graph whose vertices are all the points on $C$, and the distance between any two points on $C$ is the length of the smaller arc between them. We consider a graph augmentation problem on $C$, where we want to place $k\geq 1$ \emph{shortcuts} on $C$ such that the diameter of the resulting graph is minimized. Read More

Literature analysis is a key step in obtaining background information in biomedical research. However, it is difficult for researchers to obtain knowledge of their interests in an efficient manner because of the massive amount of the published biomedical literature. Therefore, efficient and systematic search strategies are required, which allow ready access to the substantial amount of literature. Read More

We establish asymptotic formulae for the first and second moments of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions, at the centre of the critical strip, associated to the real quadratic function field $k(\sqrt{P})$ and inert imaginary quadratic function field $k(\sqrt{\gamma P})$ with $P$ being a monic irreducible polynomial over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of odd cardinality $q$ and $\gamma$ a generator of $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{\times}$. We also study mean values for the class number and for the cardinality of the second $K$-group of maximal order of the associated fields for ramified imaginary, real, and inert imaginary quadratic function fields over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. One of the main novelties of this paper is that we compute the second moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to monic irreducible polynomials. Read More

We propose to measure the photo-production cross section of $J/{\psi}$ near threshold, in search of the recently observed LHCb hidden-charm resonances $P_c$(4380) and $P_c$(4450) consistent with 'pentaquarks'. The observation of these resonances in photo-production will provide strong evidence of the true resonance nature of the LHCb states, distinguishing them from kinematic enhancements. A bremsstrahlung photon beam produced with an 11 GeV electron beam at CEBAF covers the energy range of $J/{\psi}$ production from the threshold photo-production energy of 8. Read More

We build a model of our spacetime by assuming new particles called "space quanta." In the ambient or bulk spacetime ${\cal S}^{D_{\rm amb}}$ ($D_{\rm amb} \ge 4$), a multitude of space quanta form a nearly three-dimensional object, whose continuum approximation is called the space 3-brane. The world volume ${\cal WV}_{\rm sq}$ of this space 3-brane is described by an embedding $f^A(x^\mu) \in {\cal S}^{D_{\rm amb}}$, which produces the induced metric $\gamma_{\mu \nu}$ on the world volume ${\cal WV}_{\rm sq}$. For a polygonal domain with $h$ holes and a total of $n$ vertices, we present algorithms that compute the $L_1$ geodesic diameter in $O(n^2+h^4)$ time and the $L_1$ geodesic center in $O((n^4+n^2 h^4)\alpha(n))$ time, respectively, where $\alpha(\cdot)$ denotes the inverse Ackermann function. No algorithms were known for these problems before. For the Euclidean counterpart, the best algorithms compute the geodesic diameter in $O(n^{7. Read More

We study quantum teleportation between two different types of optical qubits using hybrid entanglement as a quantum channel under decoherence effects. One type of qubit employs the vacuum and single photon states for the basis, called a single-rail single-photon qubit, and the other utilizes coherent states of opposite phases. We find that teleportation from a single-rail single-photon qubit to a coherent state qubit is better than the opposite direction in terms of fidelity and success probability. Read More

We present an algorithm that computes the geodesic center of a given polygonal domain. The running time of our algorithm is $O(n^{12+\epsilon})$ for any $\epsilon>0$, where $n$ is the number of corners of the input polygonal domain. Prior to our work, only the very special case where a simple polygon is given as input has been intensively studied in the 1980s, and an $O(n \log n)$-time algorithm is known by Pollack et al. We establish tight bounds for beacon-based coverage problems, and improve the bounds for beacon-based routing problems in simple rectilinear polygons. Specifically, we show that $\lfloor \frac{n}{6} \rfloor$ beacons are always sufficient and sometimes necessary to cover a simple rectilinear polygon $P$ with $n$ vertices. We also prove tight bounds for the case where $P$ is monotone, and we present an optimal linear-time algorithm that computes the beacon-based kernel of $P$. Read More

Graphene exhibits extraordinary electronic and mechanical properties, and extremely high thermal conductivity. Being a very stable atomically thick membrane that can be suspended between two leads, graphene provides a perfect test platform for studying thermal conductivity in two-dimensional systems, which is of primary importance for phonon transport in low-dimensional materials. Here we report experimental measurements and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of thermal conduction in suspended single layer graphene as a function of both temperature and sample length. In this paper, we show that the $L_1$ geodesic diameter and center of a simple polygon can be computed in linear time. For the purpose, we focus on revealing basic geometric properties of the $L_1$ geodesic balls, that is, the metric balls with respect to the $L_1$ geodesic distance. More specifically, in this paper we show that any family of $L_1$ geodesic balls in any simple polygon has Helly number two, and the $L_1$ geodesic center consists of midpoints of shortest paths between diametral pairs. Single-molecule fluorescence imaging of adsorption onto initially-bare surfaces shows that polymer chains need not localize immediately after arrival. In a system optimized to present limited adsorption sites (quartz surface to which polyethylene glycol (PEG) is exposed in aqueous solution at pH = 8.2) we find that some chains diffuse back into bulk solution and re-adsorb at some distance away, sometimes multiple times before either they localize at a stable position or else diffuse away into bulk solution. The technical breakthrough in synthesizing graphene by chemical vapor deposition methods (CVD) has opened up enormous opportunities for large-scale device applications. In order to improve the electrical properties of CVD graphene grown on copper (Cu-CVD graphene), recent efforts have focussed on increasing the grain size of such polycrystalline graphene films to 100 micrometers and larger. While an increase in grain size and hence, a decrease of grain boundary density is expected to greatly enhance the device performance, here we show that the charge mobility and sheet resistance of Cu-CVD graphene is already limited within a single grain. Graphene has exceptional optical, mechanical and electrical properties, making it an emerging material for novel optoelectronics, photonics and for flexible transparent electrode applications. However, the relatively high sheet resistance of graphene is a major constrain for many of these applications. Here we propose a new approach to achieve low sheet resistance in large-scale CVD monolayer graphene using non-volatile ferroelectric polymer gating. Read More

Given a set of line segments in the plane, not necessarily finite, what is a convex region of smallest area that contains a translate of each input segment? This question can be seen as a generalization of Kakeya's problem of finding a convex region of smallest area such that a needle can be rotated through 360 degrees within this region. We show that there is always an optimal region that is a triangle, and we give an optimal \Theta(n log n)-time algorithm to compute such a triangle for a given set of n segments. We also show that, if the goal is to minimize the perimeter of the region instead of its area, then placing the segments with their midpoint at the origin and taking their convex hull results in an optimal solution. Modern tissue engineering strategies combine living cells and scaffold materials to develop biological substitutes that can restore tissue functions. Both natural and synthetic materials have been fabricated for transplantation of stem cells and their specific differentiation into muscles, bones and cartilages. One of the key objectives for bone regeneration therapy to be successful is to direct stem cells' proliferation and to accelerate their differentiation in a controlled manner through the use of growth factors and osteogenic inducers. We demonstrate injection, transport and detection of spins in spin valve arrays patterned in both copper based chemical vapor deposition (Cu-CVD) synthesized wafer scale single layer (SLG) and bilayer graphene (BLG). Our observations make Cu-CVD graphene a promising material of choice for large scale spintronic applications. Read More

Preparing graphene and its derivatives on functional substrates may open enormous opportunities for exploring the intrinsic electronic properties and new functionalities of graphene. At low temperatures (T<140K), the temperature dependent thermal conductivity scales as ~T^{1. Read More

We study the effect of extended charge defects in electronic transport properties of graphene. We consider a variant of two-point Euclidean shortest path query problem: given a polygonal domain, build a data structure for two-point shortest path query, provided that query points always lie on the boundary of the domain. As a main result, we show that a logarithmic-time query for shortest paths between boundary points can be performed using O~ (n^5) preprocessing time and O(n^5) space where n is the number of corners of the polygonal domain and the O~ notation suppresses the polylogarithmic factor. This is realized by observing a connection between Davenport-Schinzel sequences and our problem in the parameterized space. Read More

For two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane, a straight line $h$, called a highway, and a real $v>1$, we define the \emph{travel time} (also known as the \emph{city distance}) from $p$ and $q$ to be the time needed to traverse a quickest path from $p$ to $q$, where the distance is measured with speed $v$ on $h$ and with speed 1 in the underlying metric elsewhere. Given a set $S$ of $n$ points in the plane and a highway speed $v$, we consider the problem of finding a \emph{highway} that minimizes the maximum travel time over all pairs of points in $S$. If the orientation of the highway is fixed, the optimal highway can be computed in linear time, both for the $L_1$- and the Euclidean metric as the underlying metric. Read More

The aperture angle approximation error of a compact convex set C in the plane with respect to an inscribed convex polygon Q of C is the minimum aperture angle of any x in C Q with respect to Q. We show that for any compact convex set C in the plane and any k > 2, there is an inscribed convex k-gon Q of C with aperture angle approximation error (1 - 2/(k+1)) pi. Read More

Time-resolved optical techniques are used to explore electron spin dynamics in bulk and epilayer samples of n-type ZnO as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The bulk sample yields a spin coherence time T2* of 20 ns at T = 30 K. Epilayer samples, grown by pulsed laser deposition, show a maximum T2* of 2 ns at T = 10 K, with spin precession persisting up to T = 280 K. Read More

We present a comprehensive analysis on the MSSM Higgs sector CP violation at photon colliders including the chargino contributions as well as the contributions of other charged particles. The chargino loop contributions can be important for the would-be CP odd Higgs production at photon colliders. Polarization asymmetries are indispensable in determining the CP properties of neutral Higgs bosons. Read More

Phenomenology of a radion ($\phi$) in the Randall-Sundrum scenario is discussed. The radion couples to the trace of energy momentum tensor of the standard model with a strength suppressed only by a new scale ($\Lambda_{\phi}$) which is an order of the electroweak scale. In particular, the effective coupling of a radion to two gluons is enhanced due to the trace anomaly of QCD. Read More

Assuming the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, we investigated the effective potential at the one-loop level in the Randall-Sundrum theory. We found the lower and upper bounds of the radion mass m_\phi and the radion-SM coupling constant, 0.8 GeV \lesssim m_\phi \lesssim 260 GeV and 1400 GeV \lesssim \Lambda_\phi \lesssim 1500 GeV for the one-loop level potential.
