This White Paper details the intentions and plans of the East Asian Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) community for pushing the frontiers of millimeter/submillimeter VLBI. To this end, we shall endeavor to actively promote coordinated efforts in the East Asia region. Our goal is to establish firm collaborations among the East Asia VLBI community in partnership with related institutes in North America and Europe and to expand existing global mm/submm VLBI arrays for (a) exploring the vicinity of black holes with an ultimate angular resolution down to 1~R$_{S}$ (Schwarzschild radius) and (b) investigating the dynamics of circumstellar gas in star-forming regions and late-type stars, and circumnuclear gas around active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We derive a simple analytical formula to describe the evolution of spectral index $\beta$ in the steep decay phase shaped by the curvature effect with assumption that the spectral parameters and Lorentz factor of jet shell is the same for different latitude. Here, the value of $\beta$ is estimated in 0.3$-$10keV energy band. Read More

The curvature effect may be responsible for the steep decay phase observed in gamma-ray bursts. For testing the curvature effect with observations, the zero time point $t_0$ adopted to plot observer time and flux on a logarithmic scale should be appropriately selected. In practice, however, the true $t_0$ cannot be directly constrained from the data. Read More

Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices have been widely used as feature descriptors in image recognition. However, the dimension of an SPD matrix built by image feature descriptors is usually high. So SPD matrices oriented dimensionality reduction techniques are needed. Read More

The singular value decomposition (SVD) is a widely used matrix factorization tool which underlies plenty of useful applications, e.g. recommendation system, abnormal detection and data compression. Read More

We investigate the Anderson localization in non-Hermitian Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper (AAH) models with imaginary potentials added to lattice sites to represent the physical gain and loss during the interacting processes between the system and environment. By checking the mean inverse participation ratio (MIPR) of the system, we find that different configurations of physical gain and loss have very different impacts on the localization phase transition in the system. In the case with balanced physical gain and loss added in an alternate way to the lattice sites, the critical region (in the case with p-wave superconducting pairing) and the critical value (both in the situations with and without p-wave pairing) for the Anderson localization phase transition will be significantly reduced, which implies an enhancement of the localization process. Traditional manifold learning algorithms often bear an assumption that the local neighborhood of any point on embedded manifold is roughly equal to the tangent space at that point without considering the curvature. The curvature indifferent way of manifold processing often makes traditional dimension reduction poorly neighborhood preserving. To overcome this drawback we propose a new algorithm called RF-ML to perform an operation on the manifold with help of Ricci flow before reducing the dimension of manifold. Read More

We aim to test if a blazar candidate of uncertain-type (BCU) in the third Fermi active galactic nuclei catalog (3LAC) can be potentially classified as a BL Lac object or a flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) by performing a statistical analysis of its broadband spectral properties. We find that 34% of the radio-selected BCUs (583 BCUs) are BL Lac-like and 20% of them are FSRQ-like, which maybe within 90% level of confidence. Similarly, 77. Read More

GRB 160625B is an extremely bright GRB with three distinct emission episodes. By analyzing its data observed with the GBM and LAT on board the {\em Fermi} mission, we show that the spectrum of its initial short episode (Episode I) can be fitted with a multi-color black body (mBB) model, and the derived maximum temperature ($T_{\rm max}$) is $\sim 25$ keV. The time-resolved spectra of its main episode (Episode II), which was detected with both GBM and LAT after a long quiet stage ($\sim 180$ seconds) after the initial episode, can be fitted with a model composing of an mBB component plus a cutoff power-law (CPL) component. The study of the restricted isometry property (RIP) for corrupted random matrices is particularly important in the field of compressed sensing (CS) with corruptions. If a matrix still satisfy RIP after a certain portion of rows are erased, then we say that the matrix has the strong restricted isometry property (SRIP. In the field of compressed sensing, random matrices satisfies certain moment conditions are of particular interest. Read More

Metal-Insulator-Metal tunnel junctions (MIMTJ) are common throughout the microelectronics industry. The industry standard AlOx tunnel barrier, formed through oxygen diffusion into an Al wetting layer, is plagued by internal defects and pinholes which prevent the realization of atomically-thin barriers demanded for enhanced quantum coherence. In this work, we employed in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) along with molecular dynamics simulations to understand and control the growth of atomically thin Al2O3 tunnel barriers using atomic layer deposition (ALD). We investigate the dependence of charge transfer on the intensity of driving laser field when SiO2 crystal is irradiated by an 800 nm laser. It is surprising that the direction of charge transfer undergoes a sudden reversal when the driving laser intensity exceeds critical values with different carrier envelope phases. By applying quantum-trajectory analysis, we find that the Bloch oscillation plays an important role in charge transfer in solid. Read More

Let $n>1$ be an integer, $\alpha\in{\mathbb C}^n$, $b\in{\mathbb C}$, and $V$ a $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-module. We define a class of weight modules $F^\alpha_{b}(V)$ over $\sl_{n+1}$ using the restriction of modules of tensor fields over the Lie algebra of vector fields on $n$-dimensional torus. In this paper we consider the case $n=2$ and prove the irreducibility of such 5-parameter $\mathfrak{sl}_{3}$-modules $F^\alpha_{b}(V)$ generically. Read More

For an irreducible module $P$ over the Weyl algebra $\mathcal{K}_n^+$ (resp. $\mathcal{K}_n$) and an irreducible module $M$ over the general liner Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, using Shen's monomorphism, we make $P\otimes M$ into a module over the Witt algebra $W_n^+$ (resp. over $W_n$). A Lie algebra $L$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is said to be zero product determined (zpd) if every bilinear map $f:L\times L\to \mathbb{F}$ with the property that $f(x,y)=0$ whenever $x$ and $y$ commute is a coboundary. The main goal of the paper is to determine whether or not some important Lie algebras are zpd. We show that the Galilei Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2\ltimes V$, where $V$ is a simple $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-module, is zpd if and only if $\dim V =2$ or $\dim V$ is odd. Read More

M87 is one of the nearest radio galaxies with a central SMBH and a prominent relativistic jet. Due to its close distance to the observer and the large SMBH mass, the source is one of the best laboratories to obtain strong observational constraints on the theoretical models for the formation and evolution of the AGN jets. In this article, we present preliminary results from our ongoing observational study about the innermost jet of M87 at an ultra-high resolution of $\sim$50${\mu}$as achieved by the Global Millimeter-VLBI Array (GMVA). We reformulate gauge theories in analogy with the vierbein formalism of general relativity. More specifically, we reformulate gauge theories such that their gauge dynamical degrees of freedom are local fields that transform linearly under the dual representation of the charged matter field. These local fields, which naively have the interpretation of non-local operators similar to Wilson lines, satisfy constraint equations. Read More

General Relativity predicts that the emission close to a black hole must be lensed by its strong gravitational field, illuminating the last photon orbit. This results in a dark circular area known as the black hole 'shadow'. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a (sub)mm VLBI network capable of Schwarzschild-radius resolution on Sagittarius A* (or Sgr A*), the 4 million solar mass black hole at the Galactic Center. We investigate a non-Hermitian Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring system with a quantum dot (QD) embedded in each of its two arms. The energy levels of the QDs are complex in order to take into account the physical gain or loss of the ring system during its interacting processes with the environment. When there is magnetic flux threading through the ring, by allocating the flux phase factor into the tunneling amplitudes between the QDs and the leads in different ways, the Hamiltonian of the system can be written into different formalisms. M87 is arguably the best supermassive black hole (BH) to explore the jet and/or accretion physics due to its proximity and fruitful high-resolution multi-waveband observations. We model the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) of M87 core that observed at a scale of 0.4 arcsec ($\sim 10^5R_{\rm g}$, $R_{\rm g}$ is gravitational radius) as recently presented by Prieto et al. We investigate a generalized Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper (AAH) model with p-wave superconducting pairing. Both the hopping amplitudes between the nearest neighboring lattice sites and the on-site potentials in this system are modulated by a cosine function with a periodicity of $1/\alpha$. In the incommensurate case [$\alpha=(\sqrt{5}-1)/2$], due to the modulations on the hopping amplitudes, the critical region of this quasiperiodic system is significantly reduced and the system becomes more easily to be turned from extended states to localized states. Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (GR) successfully describes gravity. The most fundamental predictions of GR are black holes (BHs), but in spite of many convincing BH candidates in the Universe, there is no conclusive experimental proof of their existence using astronomical observations in the electromagnetic spectrum. Are BHs real astrophysical objects? Does GR hold in its most extreme limit or are alternatives needed? The prime target to address these fundamental questions is in the center of our own Galaxy, which hosts the closest and best-constrained supermassive BH candidate in the Universe, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). Knowledge gained through X-ray crystallography fostered structural determination of materials and greatly facilitated the development of modern science and technology in the past century. Atomic details of sample structures is achievable by X-ray crystallography, however, it is only applied to crystalline structures. Imaging techniques based on X-ray coherent diffraction or zone plates are capable of resolving the internal structure of non-crystalline materials at nanoscales, but it is still a challenge to achieve atomic resolution. We present the first search for the rare decay of $\eta^\prime$ into $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ in $J/\psi\to\phi\eta^{\prime}$, using a sample of $1.3\times10^{9}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit at the 90\% confidence level for the ratio $\frac{{\cal B}(\eta^{\prime}\to K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp})}{{\cal B}(\eta^{\prime}\to\gamma\pi^{+}\pi^{-})}$ is determined to be $1. The Galactic Center black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is a prime observing target for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which can resolve the 1.3 mm emission from this source on angular scales comparable to that of the general relativistic shadow. Previous EHT observations have used visibility amplitudes to infer the morphology of the millimeter-wavelength emission. Read More

The cosmic evolution of gamma-ray burst (GRB) luminosity is essential for revealing the GRB physics and for using GRBs as cosmological probes. We investigate the luminosity evolution of long GRBs with a large sample of 258 {\em Swift}/BAT GRBs. Parameterized the peak luminosity of individual GRBs evolves as $L_{\rm p}\propto{\rm }(1+z)^{k}$, we get $k=1. Read More

The radio emission from Sgr A$^\ast$ is thought to be powered by accretion onto a supermassive black hole of $\sim\! 4\times10^6~ \rm{M}_\odot$ at the Galactic Center. At millimeter wavelengths, Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations can directly resolve the bright innermost accretion region of Sgr A$^\ast$. Motivated by the addition of many sensitive, long baselines in the north-south direction, we developed a full VLBI capability at the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano (LMT). Read More

The black hole in the center of the Galaxy, associated with the compact source Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), is predicted to cast a shadow upon the emission of the surrounding plasma flow, which encodes the influence of general relativity in the strong-field regime. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) network with a goal of imaging nearby supermassive black holes (in particular Sgr A* and M87) with angular resolution sufficient to observe strong gravity effects near the event horizon. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations show that radio emission from Sgr A* exhibits vari- ability on timescales of minutes, much shorter than the duration of a typical VLBI imaging experiment, which usually takes several hours. We point out a potential common origin of the recently observed 750 GeV diphoton resonance and a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) candidate. In a dark QCD sector with an unbroken dark G-parity, the diphoton resonance could be a dark G-even pion, while the WIMP could be the lightest dark G-odd pion. Both particles are Standard Model gauge singlets and have the same decay constant. Read More

We construct a neutrino model of three twin neutrinos in light of the neutrino appearance excesses at LSND and MiniBooNE. The model, which includes a twin parity, naturally predicts identical lepton Yukawa structures in the Standard Model and the twin sectors. As a result, a universal mixing angle controls all three twin neutrino couplings to the Standard Model charged leptons. Read More

Near a black hole, differential rotation of a magnetized accretion disk is thought to produce an instability that amplifies weak magnetic fields, driving accretion and outflow. These magnetic fields would naturally give rise to the observed synchrotron emission in galaxy cores and to the formation of relativistic jets, but no observations to date have been able to resolve the expected horizon-scale magnetic-field structure. We report interferometric observations at 1. Read More

The angular spectrum theory is applied to the nonlinear harmonic generation process in optical superlattices. Several explicit and analytical structure functions are deduced to design optical superlattices for various purposes. Employing this method, nonlinear image formation is achieved during the second-harmonic generation process in a properly designed optical superlattice. Read More

Needle-like electromagnetic fields has various advantages for the applications in high-resolution imaging, Raman Spectroscopy, as well as long-distance optical transportation. The realization of such field often requires high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens and the transmission masks. We demonstrate an ultralong needle-like focus in the optical range produced with an ordinary lens. Read More

We study the $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry breaking for the scattering problem in a one-dimensional (1D) non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice model with balanced gain and loss distributed on two adjacent sites. In the scattering process the system undergoes a transition from the exact $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry phase to the phase with spontaneously breaking $\mathcal{PT} $-symmetry as the amplitude of complex potentials increases. Using the S-matrix method, we derive an exact discriminant, which can be used to distinguish different symmetry phases, and analytically determine the exceptional point for the symmetry breaking. We propose a new global jet-finding algorithm for reconstructing two-prong objects like hadronic weak gauge bosons at a hadron collider. The selection of particles in a two-prong jet is required to maximize a $J_{E_T}^{\rm II}$ function, which contains a modified second Fox-Wolfram moment and prefers a two-prong structure for a fixed jet mass. Compared to the traditional jet-substructure method, our algorithm can provide a similar or better performance for identifying boosted weak gauge bosons that are produced from either Standard Model processes or heavy di-boson resonance decays. We report an observation of the process $J/\psi\rightarrow\gamma X(1835)\rightarrow\gamma K^0_S K^0_S\eta$ at low $K^0_S K^0_S$ mass with a statistical significance larger than 12.9$\sigma$ using a data sample of $1.31 \times 10^{9}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. Read More

We report about a 230 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) fringe finder observation of blazar 3C 279 with the APEX telescope in Chile, the phased submillimeter array (SMA), and the SMT of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). We installed VLBI equipment and measured the APEX station position to 1 cm accuracy (1 sigma). We then observed 3C 279 on 2012 May 7 in a 5 hour 230 GHz VLBI track with baseline lengths of 2800 M$\lambda$ to 7200 M$\lambda$ and a finest fringe spacing of 28. Read More

We carry out a combined theoretical and experimental investigation on the population distributions in the ground and excited states of tunnel ionized N2 molecules at various driver wavelengths in the near- and mid-infrared range. Our results reveal that efficient couplings (i.e. Read More

We propose a scheme to dynamically synthesize a space-periodic effective magnetic field for neutral atoms by time-periodic magnetic field pulses. When atomic spin adiabatically follows the direction of the effective magnetic field, an adiabatic scalar potential together with a geometric vector potential emerges for the atomic center-of-mass motion, due to the Berry phase effect. While atoms hop between honeycomb lattice sites formed by the minima of the adiabatic potential, complex Peierls phase factors in the hopping coefficients are induced by the vector potential, which facilitate a topological Chern insulator. An amplitude analysis of the $\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ system produced in radiative $J/\psi$ decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the $\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ system is determined as a function of $M_{\pi^{0}\pi^{0}}$ from an analysis of the $(1.311\pm0. Read More

A transition in source-drain current vs back gate voltage ID - VBG characteristics from extrinsic polar molecule dominant hysteresis to anti-hysteresis induced by an oxygen deficient surface layer that is intrinsic to the ferroelectric thin films has been observed on graphene field-effect transistors on Pb0.92La0.08Zr0. Using a sample of 1.31 billion $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the decays $J/\psi \to \phi \pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ and $J/\psi \to \phi \pi^{0}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ are investigated. The isospin violating decay $J/\psi \to \phi \pi^{0} f_{0}(980)$ with $f_{0}(980) \to \pi\pi$, is observed for the first time. Read More
