Ridesourcing platforms like Uber and Didi are getting more and more popular around the world. However, unauthorized ridesourcing activities taking advantages of the sharing economy can greatly impair the healthy development of this emerging industry. As the first step to regulate on-demand ride services and eliminate black market, we design a method to detect ridesourcing cars from a pool of cars based on their trajectories. Read More

Frequency combs have applications that extend from the ultra-violet into the mid infrared bands. Microcombs, a miniature and often semiconductor-chip-based device, can potentially access most of these applications, but are currently more limited in spectral reach. Here, we demonstrate mode-locked silica microcombs with emission near the edge of the visible spectrum. Read More

Let $\mathbb{Z}^{+}$ be the set of positive integers. Let $C_{k}$ denote all subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^{+}$ such that neither of them contains $k + 1$ pairwise coprime integers and $C_k(n)=C_k\cap \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $f(n, k) = \text{max}_{A \in C_{k}(n)}|A|$, where $|A|$ denotes the number of elements of the set $A$. Read More

For a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, let $R_A(n)$ denote the number of ordered pairs $(a,a')\in A\times A$ such that $a+a'=n$. The celebrated Erd\H{o}s-Tur\'an conjecture says that, if $R_A(n)\ge 1$ for all sufficiently large integers $n$, then the representation function $R_A(n)$ cannot be bounded. For any positive integer $m$, Ruzsa's number $R_m$ is defined to be the least positive integer $r$ such that there exists a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m$ with $1\le R_A(n)\le r$ for all $n\in \mathbb{Z}_m$. A significant excess of J/$\psi$ yield at very low transverse momentum ($p_T < 0.3$ GeV/c) was observed by the ALICE and STAR collaborations in peripheral A+A collisions, which points to evidence of coherent photoproduction of J/$\psi$ in violent hadronic interactions. Theoretically, the photoproduction of J$/\psi$ in hadronic collisions raises questions about how spectator and non-spectator nucleons participate in the coherent reaction. Read More

Solitons occur in many physical systems when a nonlinearity compensates wave dispersion. Their recent formation in microresonators opens a new research direction for nonlinear optical physics and provides a platform for miniaturization of spectroscopy and frequency metrology systems. These microresonator solitons orbit around a closed waveguide path and produce a repetitive output pulse stream at a rate set by the round-trip time. Read More

Regularization methods are commonly used in X-ray CT image reconstruction. Different regularization methods reflect the characterization of different prior knowledge of images. In a recent work, a new regularization method called a low-dimensional manifold model (LDMM) is investigated to characterize the low-dimensional patch manifold structure of natural images, where the manifold dimensionality characterizes structural information of an image. Any empirical data can be approximated to one of Pearson distributions using the first four moments of the data (Elderton and Johnson, 1969; Pearson, 1895; Solomon and Stephens, 1978). Thus, Pearson distributions made statistical analysis possible for data with unknown distributions. There are both extant old-fashioned in-print tables (Pearson and Hartley, 1972) and contemporary computer programs (Amos and Daniel, 1971; Bouver and Bargmann, 1974; Bowman and Shenton, 1979; Davis and Stephens, 1983; Pan, 2009) available for obtaining percentage points of Pearson distributions corresponding to certain pre-specifed percentages (or probability values) (e. Although hash function learning algorithms have achieved great success in recent years, most existing hash models are off-line, which are not suitable for processing sequential or online data. To address this problem, this work proposes an online hash model to accommodate data coming in stream for online learning. Specifically, a new loss function is proposed to measure the similarity loss between a pair of data samples in hamming space. Read More

We establish sharp Hardy-Adams inequalities on hyperbolic space $\mathbb{B}^{4}$ of dimension four. Namely, we will show that for any $\alpha>0$ there exists a constant $C_{\alpha}>0$ such that \[ \int_{\mathbb{B}^{4}}(e^{32\pi^{2} u^{2}}-1-32\pi^{2} u^{2})dV=16\int_{\mathbb{B}^{4}}\frac{e^{32\pi^{2} u^{2}}-1-32\pi^{2} u^{2}}{(1-|x|^{2})^{4}}dx\leq C_{\alpha}. \] for any $u\in C^{\infty}_{0}(\mathbb{B}^{4})$ with \[ \int_{\mathbb{B}^{4}}\left(-\Delta_{\mathbb{H}}-\frac{9}{4}\right)(-\Delta_{\mathbb{H}}+\alpha)u\cdot udV\leq1. By using, among other things, the Fourier analysis techniques on hyperbolic and symmetric spaces, we establish the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequalities for higher order derivatives on half spaces. The proof relies on a Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality on hyperbolic spaces which is of its independent interest. We also give an alternative proof of Benguria, Frank and Loss' work concerning the sharp constant in the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality in the three dimensional upper half space. Read More

We present the first discoveries from a survey of $z\gtrsim6$ quasars using imaging data from the DECam Legacy Survey (DECaLS) in the optical, the UKIRT Deep Infrared Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and a preliminary version of the UKIRT Hemisphere Survey (UHS) in the near-IR, and ALLWISE in the mid-IR. DECaLS will image 9000 deg$^2$ of sky down to $z_{\rm AB}\sim23.0$, and UKIDSS and UHS, which will map the northern sky at $0Read More

Image super-resolution using self-optimizing mask via fractional-order gradient interpolation and reconstruction aims to recover detailed information from low-resolution images and reconstruct them into high-resolution images. Due to the limited amount of data and information retrieved from low-resolution images, it is difficult to restore clear, artifact-free images, while still preserving enough structure of the image such as the texture. This paper presents a new single image super-resolution method which is based on adaptive fractional-order gradient interpolation and reconstruction. Read More

Let $C,W\subseteq \mathbb{Z}$. If $C+W=\mathbb{Z}$, then the set $C$ is called an additive complement to $W$ in $\mathbb{Z}$. If no proper subset of $C$ is an additive complement to $W$, then $C$ is called a minimal additive complement. Read More

The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. Read More

Increasing use of CT in modern medical practice has raised concerns over associated radiation dose. Reduction of radiation dose associated with CT can increase noise and artifacts, which can adversely affect diagnostic confidence. Denoising of low-dose CT images on the other hand can help improve diagnostic confidence, which however is a challenging problem due to its ill-posed nature, since one noisy image patch may correspond to many different output patches. Both GPS and WiFi based localization have been exploited in recent years, yet most researches focus on localizing at home without environment context. Besides, the near home or workplace area is complex and has little attention in smart home or IOT. Therefore, after exploring the realistic route in and out of building, we conducted a time localization system (TLS) based on off-the-shelf smart phones with WiFi identification. Read More

Optical microcavities are compact, often chip-based devices, that are essential in technologies spanning frequency metrology to biosensing. They have also enabled new science in quantum information and cavity optomechanics. Performance requirements in subjects like cavity-QED and sensing have long placed emphasis on low-optical-loss (high-Q-factor) micrometer-scale resonators. Read More

Organic semiconductors possess an intrinsic energetic disorder characteristic, which holds an exceptionally important role for understanding organic photovoltaic (OPV) operations and future optimizations. We performed illumination intensity dependence of capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements in PIDTDTQx:PC70BM based organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic systems in working conditions. Energetic disorder profiles for the active layer, PIDTDTQx:PC70BM, changed significantly when different interfaces were involved. Read More

We present measurements of three-particle correlations for various harmonics in Au+Au collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The quantity $\langle\cos(m\phi_1+n\phi_2-(m+n)\phi_3)\rangle$ is evaluated as a function of $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}$, collision centrality, transverse momentum, $p_T$, pseudo-rapidity difference, $\Delta\eta$, and harmonics ($m$ and $n$). We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations $\langle \cos (m\phi_1 + n\phi_2 - (m+n) \phi_3)\rangle$ for charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We find evidence for correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. Read More

We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. Read More

For a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, let $R_A(n)$ denote the number of ordered pairs $(a,a')\in A\times A$ such that $a+a'=n$. The celebrated Erd\H{o}s-Tur\'{a}n conjecture says that, if $R_A(n)\ge 1$ for all sufficiently large integers $n$, then the representation function $R_A(n)$ cannot be bounded. In 1977, Hoffman gave a characterization of graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least -2. In this paper we generalize this result to graphs with smaller smallest eigenvalue. For the proof, we use the concept of Hoffman graphs, as introduced by Woo and Neumaier in 1995. Read More

Observations indicate that large-scale anomalies exist in the fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background. In these anomalies, the hemispherical power amplitude asymmetry has a correlation length comparable to that of the observable universe. Therefore, it may be of pre-inflationary origin. Read More

We report the first experimental evidence of Alfvenic ion temperature gradient (AITG) modes in HL-2A Ohmic plasmas. A group of oscillations with $f=15-40$ kHz and $n=3-6$ is detected by various diagnostics in high-density Ohmic regimes. They appear in the plasmas with peaked density profiles and weak magnetic shear, which indicates that corresponding instabilities are excited by pressure gradients. Read More

While recent neural machine translation approaches have delivered state-of-the-art performance for resource-rich language pairs, they suffer from the data scarcity problem for resource-scarce language pairs. Although this problem can be alleviated by exploiting a pivot language to bridge the source and target languages, the source-to-pivot and pivot-to-target translation models are usually independently trained. In this work, we introduce a joint training algorithm for pivot-based neural machine translation. Read More

Decentralized coded caching is studied in a content delivery system with a server holding a database of $N$ files, each of size $F$ bits, serving $K$ users, each equipped with a cache memory, not necessarily of equal size. It is assumed that the users' caches are filled in advance during the off-peak traffic period in a decentralized manner, i.e. Read More

DESI (Dark Energy Spectropic Instrument) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey. The DESI instrument is a robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrograph capable of taking up to 5,000 simultaneous spectra over a wavelength range from 360 nm to 980 nm. The fibers feed ten three-arm spectrographs with resolution $R= \lambda/\Delta\lambda$ between 2000 and 5500, depending on wavelength. Read More

We explore a scenario that the dark matter is a boson condensate created by the misalignment mechanism, in which a spin 0 boson (an axion-like particle) and a spin 1 boson (the dark photon) are considered, respectively. We find that although the sub-MeV dark matter boson is extremely stable, the huge number of dark matter particles in a galaxy halo makes the decaying signal detectable. A galaxy halo is a large structure bounded by gravity with a typical $\sim10^{12}$ solar mass, and the majority of its components are made of dark matter. Read More

Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-sustaining optical wavepackets in resonators. They use the Kerr nonlinearity to both compensate dispersion and to offset optical loss. Besides providing insights into nonlinear resonator physics, they can be applied in frequency metrology, precision clocks, and spectroscopy. Read More

3D hand pose tracking/estimation will be very important in the next generation of human-computer interaction. Most of the currently available algorithms rely on low-cost active depth sensors. However, these sensors can be easily interfered by other active sources and require relatively high power consumption. Read More

We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for mid-rapidity di-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The di-jet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. $A_{LL}$ results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. In this paper, we study the benefits of full-duplex (FD) receiver jamming in enhancing the physical-layer security of a two-tier decentralized wireless network with each tier deployed with a large number of pairs of a single-antenna transmitter and a multi-antenna receiver. In the underlying tier, the transmitter sends unclassified information, and the receiver works in the halfduplex (HD) mode receiving the desired signal. In the overlaid tier, the transmitter deliveries confidential information in the presence of randomly located eavesdroppers, and the receiver works in the FD mode radiating jamming signals to confuse eavesdroppers and receiving the desired signal simultaneously. We present the discovery of nine quasars at $z\sim6$ identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data. This completes our survey of $z\sim6$ quasars in the SDSS footprint. Our final sample consists of 52 quasars at $5. Read More

Decentralized coded caching is studied for a content server with $N$ files, each of size $F$ bits, serving $K$ active users, each equipped with a cache of distinct capacity. It is assumed that the users' caches are filled in advance during the off-peak traffic period without the knowledge of the number of active users, their identities, or the particular demands. User demands are revealed during the peak traffic period, and are served simultaneously through an error-free shared link. Read More

It is difficult to train a personalized task-oriented dialogue system because the data collected from each individual is often insufficient. Personalized dialogue systems trained on a small dataset can overfit and make it difficult to adapt to different user needs. One way to solve this problem is to consider a collection of multiple users' data as a source domain and an individual user's data as a target domain, and to perform a transfer learning from the source to the target domain. We present a detailed study of magnetic reconnection in a quasi-two-dimensional pulsed-power driven laboratory experiment. Oppositely directed magnetic fields $(B=3$ T), advected by supersonic, sub-Alfv\'enic carbon plasma flows $(V_{in}=50$ km/s), are brought together and mutually annihilate inside a thin current layer ($\delta=0.6$ mm). The spontaneous formation of double helices for filaments under torsion is common and significant. For example, the research on the supercoiling of DNA is helpful for understanding the replication and transcription of DNA. Similar double helices can appear in polymer chains, carbon nanotube yarns, cables, telephone wires and so forth. Read More
