The Kepler Space Telescope is currently searching for planets transiting stars along the ecliptic plane as part of its extended K2 mission. We processed the publicly released data from the first year of K2 observations (Campaigns 0, 1, 2, and 3) and searched for periodic eclipse signals consistent with planetary transits. We present optical and near-infrared photometry, as well as ground-based optical spectra and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra, of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2001ay. We report the discovery of an eclipsing companion to NLTT 41135, a nearby M5 dwarf that was already known to have a wider, slightly more massive common proper motion companion, NLTT 41136, at 2.4 arcsec separation. Analysis of combined-light and radial velocity curves of the system indicates that NLTT 41135B is a 31-34 +/- 3 MJup brown dwarf (where the range depends on the unknown metallicity of the host star) on a circular orbit. We present results of a large scale, multi-epoch optical survey of the Ori OB1 association, carried out with the QuEST camera at the Venezuela National Astronomical Observatory. We identify for the first time the widely spread low-mass, young population in the Orion OB1a and OB1b sub-associations. We have carried out a study of the early type stars in nearby OB associations spanning an age range of $\sim$ 3 to 16 Myr, with the aim of determining the fraction of stars which belong to the Herbig Ae/Be class. We studied the B, A, and F stars in the nearby ($\le 500$ pc) OB associations Upper Scorpius, Perseus OB2, Lacerta OB1, and Orion OB1, with membership determined from Hipparcos data. We obtained spectra for 440 Hipparcos stars in these associations, from which we determined accurate spectral types, visual extinctions, effective temperatures, luminosities and masses, using Hipparcos photometry. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of supernova (SN) 2002cx, which reveal it to be unique among all observed type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). SN 2002cx exhibits a SN 1991T-like premaximum spectrum, a SN 1991bg-like luminosity, and expansion velocities roughly half those of normal SNe Ia. This paper describes the first optical spectroscopic survey of class I sources (also known as embedded sources and protostars) in the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud. We detect 10 of the 24 known class I sources in the cloud at 5500-9000 A. All detected class I sources have strong H-alpha emission; most also have strong [O I] and [S II] emission. Read More
