We associate to a real projective variety $X$ two convex cones which are fundamental in real algebraic geometry: the cone $P_X$ of quadratic forms nonnegative on $X$, and the cone $\Sigma_X$ of sums of squares of linear forms. The dual cone $\Sigma_X^\ast$ is a spectrahedron and we show that its convexity properties are closely related to homological properties of $X$. For instance, we show that all extreme rays of $\Sigma_X^\ast$ have rank one if and only if X has Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity two. Read More

Given a real projective curve with homogeneous coordinate ring R and a nonnegative homogeneous element f in R, we bound the degree of a nonzero homogeneous sum-of-squares g in R such that the product fg is again a sum of squares. Better yet, our degree bounds only depend on geometric invariants of the curve and we show that there exists smooth curves and nonnegative elements for which our bounds are sharp. We deduce the existence of a multiplier g from a new Bertini Theorem in convex algebraic geometry and prove sharpness by deforming rational Harnack curves on toric surfaces. Read More

Compressed sensing is a technique for recovering an unknown sparse signal from a small number of linear measurements. When the measurement matrix is random, the number of measurements required for perfect recovery exhibits a phase transition: there is a threshold on the number of measurements after which the probability of exact recovery quickly goes from very small to very large. The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. We study evolution algebras of arbitrary dimension. We analyze in deep the notions of evolution subalgebras, ideals and non-degeneracy and describe the ideals generated by one element and characterize the simple evolution algebras. The excess of cosmic-ray positrons in the energy range from 10 GeV to few hundred GeV reported by PAMELA and AMS experiments is not consistent with a pure secondary origin and requires the introduction of a source term. The presence of anisotropies in the positron arrival directions would be a distinctive signature of their origin. We prove that the determinantal complexity of a hypersurface of degree $d > 2$ is bounded below by one more than the codimension of the singular locus, provided that this codimension is at least $5$. As a result, we obtain that the determinantal complexity of the $3 \times 3$ permanent is $7$. We also prove that for $n> 3$, there is no nonsingular hypersurface in $\mathbf{P}^n$ of degree $d$ that has an expression as a determinant of a $d \times d$ matrix of linear forms while on the other hand for $n \le 3$, a general determinantal expression is nonsingular. We prove that the union of the hyperplanes perpendicular to the elements of a root system $\Phi\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is a witness set for nonnegativity of forms of low degree which are invariant under the reflection group defined by $\Phi$. A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the $K_{e4}$ modes: $K_{e4}(+-)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^+ \pi^- e^\pm \nu$) and $K_{e4}(00)$ ($K^\pm \to \pi^0 \pi^0 e^\pm \nu$) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \gamma \gamma$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented. Read More

We prove that the dual toric codes coming from polytopes of degree one are characterized, among all dual toric codes, by being extremal with respect to this measure. A symmetry $SU(2,2)$ group in terms of ladder operators is presented for the Jacobi polynomials, $J_{n}^{(\alpha,\beta)}(x)$, and the Wigner $d_j$-matrices where the spins $j=n+(\alpha+\beta)/2$ integer and half-integer are considered together. A unitary irreducible representation of $SU(2,2)$ is constructed and subgroups of physical interest are discussed. This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Higgs Boson working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass). We identify the key elements of a precision Higgs physics program and document the physics potential of future experimental facilities as elucidated during the Snowmass study. We study Higgs couplings to gauge boson and fermion pairs, double Higgs production for the Higgs self-coupling, its quantum numbers and $CP$-mixing in Higgs couplings, the Higgs mass and total width, and prospects for direct searches for additional Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model. In this paper we discuss decays of the Higgs boson to quarkonia in association with a photon. We identify a new mechanism for producing such final states in Higgs decays that leads to predictions for the decay rates that differ by an order of magnitude from previous estimates. Although the branching ratios for these processes are still small, the processes are experimentally clean, and the H \to J/\psi+gamma decay should be observable at a 14 TeV LHC. Read More

We analyze the microhydration of the individual bases of nucleic acids and their methyl derivatives using methods of molecular mechanics (MM) with the Poltev-Malenkov (PM), AMBER and OPLS force fields, as well as ab initio Quantum Mechanics (QM) calculations at MP2/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. A strong candidate for the Standard Model Scalar boson, H(126), has been discovered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. In order to study this fundamental particle with unprecedented precision, and to perform precision tests of the closure of the Standard Model, we investigate the possibilities offered by An e+e- storage ring collider. The maximum cut problem for a quintic del Pezzo surface ${\rm Bl}_{4}(\mathbb{P}^2)$ asks: Among all partitions of the 10 exceptional curves into two disjoint sets, what is the largest possible number of pairwise intersections? In this article we show that the answer is twelve. More generally, we obtain bounds for the maximum cut problem for the minuscule varieties $X_{a,b,c}:={\rm Bl}_{b+c}(\mathbb{P}^{c-1})^{a-1}$ studied by Mukai and Castravet-Tevelev and show that these bounds are asymptotically sharp for infinite families. We prove our results by constructing embeddings of the classes of $(-1)$-divisors on these varieties which are optimal for the semidefinite relaxation of the maximum cut problem on graphs proposed by Goemans and Williamson. We prove that linearizing certain families of polynomial optimization problems leads to new functorial operations in real convex sets. We show that under some conditions these operations can be computed or approximated in ways amenable to efficient computation. These operations are convex analogues of Hom functors, tensor products, symmetric powers, exterior powers and general Schur functors on vector spaces and lead to novel constructions even for polyhedra. Weighted cup-length calculations in singular cohomology led Farber and Grant in 2008 to general lower bounds for the topological complexity of lens spaces. We replace singular cohomology by K-theory, and weighted cup-length arguments by considerations with biequivariant maps on spheres to improve on Farber-Grant's bounds by arbitrarily large amounts. Our calculations are based on the identification of key elements conjectured to generate the annihilator ideal of the toral bottom class in the ku-homology of the classifying space of a rank-2 abelian 2-group. As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays. Work of Dolgachev and Castravet-Tevelev establishes a bijection between the $2^{n-1}$ weights of the half-spin representations of $\mathfrak{so}_{2n}$ and the generators of the Cox ring of the variety $X_n$ which is obtained by blowing up $\mathbb{P}^{n-3}$ at $n$ points. We consider the question of which zero-dimensional schemes deform to a collection of distinct points; equivalently, we ask which Artinian k-algebras deform to a product of fields. Anomalous production of low-energy photons from the galactic center have fueled speculations on the nature and properties of dark matter particles. In particular, it has been proposed that light scalars may be responsible for the bulk of the matter density of the universe, and that they couple to ordinary matter through a light spin-1 boson. This report summarizes a study of the physics potential of the CLIC e+e- linear collider operating at centre-of-mass energies from 1 TeV to 5 TeV with luminosity of the order of 10^35 cm^-2 s^-1. First, the CLIC collider complex is surveyed, with emphasis on aspects related to its physics capabilities, particularly the luminosity and energy, and also possible polarization, \gamma\gamma and e-e- collisions.
