High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and a host of astrophysical processes. The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), with a planned launch in 2015. The ASTRO-H mission is equipped with a suite of sensitive instruments with the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E > 3 keV and a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. The simultaneous broad band pass, coupled with the high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV of the micro-calorimeter, will enable a wide variety of important science themes to be pursued. The compact primary in the X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole to be established via dynamical observations. We have recently determined accurate values for its mass and distance, and for the orbital inclination angle of the binary. NGC 4636, an X-ray bright elliptical galaxy, was observed for 70 ks with Suzaku. The low background and good energy resolution of the XIS enable us to estimate the foreground Galactic emission accurately and hence measure, for the first time, the O, Mg, Si and Fe abundances out to a radius of ~28 arcmin ($\simeq$ 140 kpc). These metal abundances are as high as $>$1 solar within the central 4' and decrease by ~50% towards the outer regions. Read More

We report Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1795 that extend to r_200 ~ 2 Mpc, the radius within which the mean cluster mass density is 200 times the cosmic critical density. The results from a recent Chandra ACIS-S study of the cluster surrounding Cygnus A are presented. We have deprojected the X-ray spectra taken from various elliptical shells in order to derive the run of temperature, density, pressure, and abundance for the ICM as a function of radius. We confirm a drop in temperature of the X-ray emitting gas from $\sim 8$ keV more than $\sim 2^{\prime}$ from the center to $\simeq 5$ keV some $30^{\prime\prime}$ from the center, with the coolest gas immediately adjacent to the radio galaxy. We propose a mechanism for the origin of the Galactic ridge X-ray background that naturally explains the properties of the Fe K line, specifically the detection of the centroid line energy below 6.7 keV and the apparent broadness of the line.
