We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \eta h_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9. Read More

The early reionization (ERE) is supposed to be a physical process which happens after recombination, but before the instantaneous reionization caused by the first generation of stars. We investigate the effect of the ERE on the temperature and polarization power spectra of cosmic microwave background (CMB), and adopt principal components analysis (PCA) to model-independently reconstruct the ionization history during the ERE. In addition, we also discuss how the ERE affects the cosmological parameter estimates, and find that the ERE does not impose any significant influences on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and the neutrino mass at the sensitivities of current experiments. From minimal surfaces such as Simons' cone and catenoids, using refined Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, we construct new solutions for a free boundary problem whose free boundary has two components. In dimension $8$, using variational arguments, we also obtain solutions which are global minimizers of the corresponding energy functional. This shows that Savin's theorem is optimal. Read More

It was shown in C. elegans that life-long treatments with low level of the prooxidant paraquat increased ROS, which then acted as the signal to slow down aging by activating the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. And deficiencies of the electron transport chain subunits increased longevity through similar mechanisms. Read More

$[Background]$ Measurements of the neutron charge distribution are made difficult by the fact that, with no net charge, the neutron electric form factor, $G^n_E$, is generally much smaller than the magnetic form factor, $G^n_M$. In addition, measurements of these form factors must use nuclear targets which requires accurately accounting for nuclear effects. $[Method]$ The inclusive quasi-elastic reaction $^3\overrightarrow{\rm{He}}(\overrightarrow{e},e')$ was measured at Jefferson Lab. Progress in science has advanced the development of human society across history, with dramatic revolutions shaped by information theory, genetic cloning, and artificial intelligence, among the many scientific achievements produced in the 20th century. However, the way that science advances itself is much less well-understood. In this work, we study the evolution of scientific development over the past century by presenting an anatomy of 89 million digitalized papers published between 1900 and 2015. Read More

We describe analytically and numerically the geometric phase arising from nonlinear frequency conversion and show that such a phase can be made non-reciprocal by momentum-dependent photonic transition. Such non-reciprocity is immune to the shortcomings imposed by dynamic reciprocity in Kerr and Kerr-like devices. We propose a simple and practical implementation, requiring only a single waveguide and one pump, while the geometric phase is controllable by the pump and promises robustness against fabrication errors. An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that generalizes and unifies graph and hypergraph theoretic results by examining its locally signed graphic substructure. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial characterization of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and adjacency matrices via a signed hypergraphic generalization of basic figures of graphs. Additionally, we provide bounds on the determinant and permanent of the Laplacian matrix, characterize the oriented hypergraphs in which the upper bound is sharp, and demonstrate that the lower bound is never achieved. Precision study of electroweak symmetry breaking strongly motivates the construction of a lepton collider with center-of-mass energy of at least 240 GeV. Besides Higgsstrahlung ($e^+e^- \to hZ$), such a collider would measure weak boson pair production ($e^+e^- \to WW$) with astonishing precision. The weak-boson-fusion production process ($e^+e^- \to \nu \bar{\nu} h$) provides an increasingly powerful handle at higher center-of-mass energies. Read More

High-mass stars have generally been assumed to accrete most of their mass while already contracted onto the main sequence, but this hypothesis has not been observationally tested. We present ALMA observations of a 3 x 1.5 pc area in the W51 high-mass star-forming complex. Read More

We theoretically investigate the electronic transport properties of curved graphene waveguides by employing non-equilibrium Green's function techniques. We systematically study the dependence of the confined waveguide modes on the potential difference, the width of waveguide and side barrier. Through two-terminal electronic transport calculations, we show that the conductance of confined waveguide modes is rather robust against the bending degree of waveguide, in consistent with the band insensitivity to the side barrier. A lattice in the Euclidean space is standard if it has a basis consisting vectors whose norms equal to the length in its successive minima. In this paper, it is shown that with the $L^2$ norm all lattices of dimension $n$ are standard if and only if $n\leqslant 4$. It is also proved that with an arbitrary norm, every lattice of dimensions 1 and 2 is standard. Read More

Using 2.93~fb$^{-1}$ of data taken at 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we study the semileptonic decays $D^+ \to \bar K^0e^+\nu_e$ and $D^+ \to \pi^0 e^+\nu_e$. Read More

The strong and radiative decay properties of the low-lying $\Omega_c$ states are studied in a constituent quark model. We find that the newly observed $\Omega_c$ states by the LHCb Collaboration can fit in well the decay patterns. Thus, their spin-parity can be possibly assigned as the following: (i) The $\Omega_c(3000)$ and $\Omega_c(3090)$ can be assigned to be two $J^P=1/2^-$ states, $|^2P_{\lambda}\frac{1}{2}^-\rangle$ and $|^4P_{\lambda}\frac{1}{2}^-\rangle$, respectively. Employing two state-of-the-art methods, multiconfiguration Dirac--Hartree--Fock and second-order many-body perturbation theory, the excitation energies and lifetimes for the lowest 200 states of the $2s^2 2p^4$, $2s 2p^5$, $2p^6$, $2s^2 2p^3 3s$, $2s^2 2p^3 3p$, $2s^2 2p^3 3d$, $2s 2p^4 3s$, $2s 2p^4 3p$, and $2s 2p^4 3d$ configurations, and multipole (electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), and electric quadrupole (E2)) transition rates, line strengths, and oscillator strengths among these states are calculated for each O-like ion from Cr XVII to Zn XXIII. Our two data sets are compared with the NIST and CHIANTI compiled values, and previous calculations. The data are accurate enough for identification and deblending of new emission lines from the sun and other astrophysical sources. Read More

We report observations of magnetoresistance, quantum oscillations and angle-resolved photoemission in RhSb$_3$, a unfilled skutterudite semimetal with low carrier density. The calculated electronic band structure of RhSb$_3$ entails a $Z_2$ quantum number $\nu_0=0,\nu_1=\nu_2=\nu_3=1$ in analogy to strong topological insulators, and inverted linear valence/conduction bands that touch at discrete points close to the Fermi level, in agreement with angle-resolved photoemission results. Transport experiments reveal an unsaturated linear magnetoresistance that approaches a factor of 200 at 60 T magnetic fields, and quantum oscillations observable up to 150~K that are consistent with a large Fermi velocity ($\sim 1. Recent methods have adapted the well-established AGM and belief base frameworks for belief change to cover belief revision in logic programs. In this study here, we present two new sets of belief change operators for logic programs. They focus on preserving the explicit relationships expressed in the rules of a program, a feature that is missing in purely semantic approaches that consider programs only in their entirety. Heavy sterile neutrinos with masses below $M_W$ can induce trilepton events at the 14 TeV LHC through purely leptonic $W$ decays of $W^\pm \to e^\pm e^\pm \mu^\mp \nu$ and $\mu^\pm \mu^\pm e^\mp \nu$ where the heavy neutrino will be in an intermediate state on its mass shell. Discovery and exclusion limits for the heavy neutrinos are found using both Cut-and-Count (CC) and a Multi-Variate Analysis (MVA) methods in this study. We also show that it is possible to discriminate between a Dirac and a Majorana heavy neutrino, even when lepton number conservation cannot be directly tested due to unobservability of the final state neutrino. Neuronal firing activities have attracted a lot of attention since a large population of spatiotemporal patterns in the brain is the basis for adaptive behavior and can also reveal the signs for various neurological disorders including Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, epilepsy and others. Here, we study the dynamics of a simple neuronal network using different sets of settings on a neuromorphic chip. We observed three different types of collective neuronal firing activities, which agree with the clinical data taken from the brain. Read More

Quantum oscillations in the binary antiferromagnetic metal FeAs are presented and compared to theoretical predictions for the electronic band structure in the anomalous spin density wave state of this material. Demonstrating a new method for growing single crystals out of Bi flux, we utilize the highest quality FeAs to perform torque magnetometry experiments up to 35 T, using rotations of field angle in two planes to provide evidence for one electron and one hole band in the magnetically ordered state. The resulting picture agrees with previous experimental evidence for multiple carriers at low temperatures, but the exact Fermi surface shape disagrees with predictions, suggesting correlations play a role in deviation from ab initio theory and cause up to a four-fold enhancement in the effective electron mass. We present a search strategy for both Dirac and Majorana sterile neutrinos from the purely leptonic decays of $W^\pm \to e^\pm e^\pm \mu^\mp \nu$ and $\mu^\pm \mu^\pm e^\mp \nu$ at the 14 TeV LHC. The discovery and exclusion limits for sterile neutrinos are shown using both the Cut-and-Count (CC) and Multi-Variate Analysis (MVA) methods. We also discriminate between Dirac and Majorana sterile neutrinos by exploiting a set of kinematic observables which differ between the Dirac and Majorana cases. Read More

Incorporating ferromagnetic dopants, such as chromium or vanadium, into thin films of the three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) (Bi,Sb)2Te3 has recently led to the realisation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), a unique phase of quantum matter. These materials are of great interest, since they may support electrical currents that flow without resistance via edge channels, even at zero magnetic field. To date, the QAHE has been investigated using low-frequency transport measurements. Read More

It is assessed in detail both experimentally and theoretically how the interlayer coupling of transition metal dichalcogenides controls the electronic properties of the respective devices. Gated transition metal dichalcogenide structures show electrons and holes to either localize in individual monolayers, or delocalize beyond multiple layers - depending on the balance between spin-orbit inter- action and interlayer hopping. This balance depends on layer thickness, momentum space symmetry points and applied gate fields. Read More

Two-dimensional (2-D) materials are of tremendous interest to integrated photonics given their singular optical characteristics spanning light emission, modulation, saturable absorption, and nonlinear optics. To harness their optical properties, these atomically thin materials are usually attached onto prefabricated devices via a transfer process. In this paper, we present a new route for 2-D material integration with planar photonics. Read More

Quantum speed limits of relativistic charged spin-0 and spin-1 bosons in the background of a homogeneous magnetic field are studied on both commutative and oncommutative planes. We show that, on the commutative plane, the average speeds of wave packets along the radial direction during the interval in which a quantum state evolving from an initial state to the orthogonal final one can not exceed the speed of light, regardless of the intensities of the magnetic field. However, due to the noncommutativity, the average speeds of the wave packets on noncommutative plane will exceed the speed of light in vacuum provided the intensity of the magnetic field is strong enough. Muon pairs can be produced in the annihilation of ultra-high energy (UHE, $E \gtrsim 10^{18} \,\mathrm{eV}$) photons with low energy cosmic background radiation in the intergalactic space, giving birth to neutrinos. Although the branching ratio of muon pair production is low, products of other channels, which are mainly electron/positron pairs, will probably transfer most of their energies into the new generated UHE photon in the subsequent interaction with the cosmic background radiation via Compton scattering in deep Klein-Nishina regime. The regeneration of these new UHE photons then provides a second chance to produce the muon pairs, enhancing the neutrino flux. Read More

Organic semiconductors possess an intrinsic energetic disorder characteristic, which holds an exceptionally important role for understanding organic photovoltaic (OPV) operations and future optimizations. We performed illumination intensity dependence of capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements in PIDTDTQx:PC70BM based organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic systems in working conditions. Energetic disorder profiles for the active layer, PIDTDTQx:PC70BM, changed significantly when different interfaces were involved. Read More

We study the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Lambda_c^{+}\to p\eta$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to p\pi^{0}$ using $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\Lambda_{c}^{+}$ pairs produced by $e^+e^-$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 4.6\; GeV$. The data sample was collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 $pb^{-1}$. Read More

A combined analysis of the reactions $\pi^+p\to \pi^+p$, $\pi^-p\to \pi^-p$ and $\pi^-p\to \pi^0n$ is carried out with a chiral quark model. The observations are reasonably described from the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance region up to the $N(1440)$ resonance region. Besides the $\Delta(1232)P_{33}$, a confirmed role of $N(1440)P_{11}$ is found in the polarizations of the $\pi^-p\to \pi^-p$ and $\pi^-p\to\pi^0n$ reactions. Read More

We analyze the locus, together with multiplicities, of "bad" conformal field theories in the compactified moduli space of N=(2,2) superconformal field theories in the context of the generalization of the Batyrev mirror construction using the gauged linear sigma-model. We find this discriminant of singular theories is described beautifully by the GKZ "A-determinant" but only if we use a noncompact toric Calabi-Yau variety on the A-model side and logarithmic coordinates on the B-model side. The two are related by "local" mirror symmetry. Read More

In [11], the authors provided an implicit variational principle for the contact Hamilton's equations \begin{align*} \begin{array}{l} \dot{x}=\frac{\partial H}{\partial p}(x,u,p), \dot{p}=-\frac{\partial H}{\partial x}(x,u,p)-\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}(x,u,p)p, \dot{u}=\frac{\partial H}{\partial p}(x,u,p)\cdot p-H(x,u,p), \end{array} \end{align*} where $M$ is a closed, connected and smooth manifold and $H=H(x,u,p)$ is strictly convex, superlinear in $p$ and Lipschitz in $u$. In the present paper, we focus on two applications of the variational principle: 1. A representation formula for the solution semigroup of the evolutionary partial differential equation \[ w_t(x,t)+H(x,w(x,t),w_x(x,t))=0; \] 2. Read More

Network centrality has important implications well beyond its role in physical and information transport analysis; as such, various quantum walk-based algorithms have been proposed for measuring network vertex centrality. In this work, we propose a continuous-time quantum walk algorithm for determining vertex centrality, and show that it generalizes to arbitrary graphs via a statistical analysis of randomly generated scale-free and Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi networks. As a proof of concept, the algorithm is detailed on a 4-vertex star graph and physically implemented via linear optics, using spatial and polarization degrees of freedoms of single photons. The influence of the noncommutativity on the average speed of a relativistic electron interacting with a uniform magnetic field within the minimum evolution time is investigated. We find that it is possible for the wave packet of the electron to travel faster than the speed of light in vacuum because of the noncommutativity. It suggests that due to the noncommutativity, Lorentz invariance is violated in the relativistic quantum mechanics region. Read More

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have gained considerable attention because of their novel properties and great potential applications. The flakes of TMDCs not only have great light absorptions from visible to near infrared, but also can be stacked together regardless of lattice mismatch like other two-dimensional (2D) materials. Along with the studies on intrinsic properties of TMDCs, the junctions based on TMDCs become more and more important in applications of photodetection. Read More

We demonstrate new mechanisms for gate tunable current partition at topological zero-line intersections in a graphene-based current splitter. Based on numerical calculations of the non-equilibrium Green's functions and Landauer-B\"{u}ttiker formula, we show that the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the order of a few Teslas allows for carrier sign dependent current routing. In the zero-field limit the control on current routing and partition can be achieved within a range of $10\%$-$90\%$ of the total incoming current by tuning the carrier density at tilted intersections, or by modifying the relative magnitude of the bulk band gaps via gate voltage. We present an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-} \pi^{+} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ based on a data sample of 2.93 ${\mbox{\,fb}^{-1}}$ acquired by the BESIII detector at the $\psi(3770)$ resonance. With a nearly background free sample of about 16000 events, we investigate the substructure of the decay and determine the relative fractions and the phases among the different intermediate processes. There are major discrepancies between recent B-spline R-matrix (BSR) and Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code (DARC) calculations regarding electron-impact excitation rates for transitions in Mg$^{4+}$, with claims that the DARC calculations are much more accurate. To identify possible reasons for these discrepancies and to estimate the accuracy of the various results, we carried out independent BSR calculations with the same 86 target states as in the previous calculations, but with a different and more accurate representation of the target structure. We find close agreement with the previous BSR results for the majority of transitions, thereby confirming their accuracy. Read More

Among newly discovered two-dimensional (2D) materials, semiconducting ultrathin sheets of MoS2 show potential for nanoelectronics. However, the carrier mobility in MoS2 is limited by scattering from surface impurities and the substrate. To probe the sources of scattering, we use a cooled scanning probe microscope (SPM) to image the flow of electrons in a MoS2 Hall bar sample at 4. Read More
