We report the first beam-target double-polarization asymmetries in the $\gamma + n(p) \rightarrow \pi^- + p(p)$ reaction spanning the nucleon resonance region from invariant mass $W$= $1500$ to $2300$ MeV. Circularly polarized photons and longitudinally polarized deuterons in $H\!D$ have been used with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The exclusive final state has been extracted using three very different analyses that show excellent agreement, and these have been used to deduce the {\it{E}} polarization observable for an effective neutron target. Integrating different semiconductor materials into an epitaxial device structure offers additional degrees of freedom to select for optimal material properties in each layer. However, interface between materials with different valences (i.e. Read More

Accretion of gas and the interaction of matter and radiation are at the heart of many questions pertaining to black hole (BH) growth and the coevolution of massive BHs and their host galaxies. In order to answer them it is critical to quantify how the ionizing radiation that emanates from the innermost regions of the BH accretion flow couples to the surrounding medium and how it regulates the BH fueling. In this work we use high resolution 3-dimensional (3D) radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with the code Enzo, equipped with adaptive ray tracing module Moray, to investigate BH accretion of cold gas regulated by radiative feedback. Schubert varieties are classical varieties and one of the important examples among spherical varieties. Especially, all smooth Schubert varieties in rational homogeneous manifolds of Picard number 1 are horospherical varieties. We characterize standard embeddings of smooth Schubert varieties in rational homogeneous manifolds of Picard number 1 by means of varieties of minimal rational tangents. Read More

Evidence for dust around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early Universe is strongly suggested by recent observations. However, the accretion mechanism of SMBHs in dusty gas is not well understood yet. We investigate the growth of intermediate-mass black-holes (IMBHs) of $\sim 10^{5}~M_{\odot}$ in dusty clouds by using one-dimensional radiative-hydrodynamics simulations. Read More

We show that, if a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ bounds a positive definite smooth 4-manifold, then there are finitely many negative definite lattices, up to the stable-equivalence, which can be realized as the intersection form of a smooth 4-manifold bounded by $Y$. To this end, we make use of constraints on definite forms bounded by $Y$ induced from Donaldson's diagonalization theorem, and Ozsv\'ath and Szab\'o's Heegaard Floer correction term. We also present some families of Seifert fibered 3-manifolds that bound both positive and negative definite smooth 4-manifolds. Read More

We systematically analyzed magnetodielectric resonances of Se colloids for the first time to exploit the possibility for use as building blocks of all-dielectric optical metafluids. By taking synergistic advantages of Se colloids, including (i) high-refractive-index at optical frequencies, (ii) unprecedented structural uniformity, and (iii) versatile access to copious quantities, the Kerker-type directional light scattering resulting from efficient coupling between strong electric and magnetic resonances were observed directly from Se colloidal suspension. Thus, the use of Se colloid as a generic magnetodielectric building block highlights an opportunity for the fluidic low-loss optical antenna, which can be processed via spin-coating and painting. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanomanipulation has been viewed as a deterministic method for the assembly of plasmonic metamolecules because it enables unprecedented engineering of clusters with exquisite control over particle number and geometry. Nevertheless, the dimensionality of plasmonic metamolecules via AFM nanomanipulation is limited to 2D, so as to restrict the design space of available artificial electromagnetisms. Here, we show that 2D nanomanipulation of the AFM tip can be used to assemble 3D plasmonic metamolecules in a versatile and deterministic way by dribbling highly spherical and smooth gold nanospheres (NSs) on a nanohole template rather than on a flat surface. The cross section of the exclusive $\eta$ electroproduction reaction $ep\to e^\prime p^\prime \eta$ was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4\sigma/dtdQ^2dx_Bd\phi_\eta$ and structure functions $\sigma_U = \sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L, \sigma_{TT}$ and $\sigma_{LT}$, as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. This article proposes a new energy harvesting concept that greatly enhances thermionic power generation with high e ciency by exploiting the near- field enhancement of thermal radiation. The proposed near-field enhanced thermionic energy conversion (NETEC) system is uniquely configured with a low-bandgap semiconductor cathode separated from a thermal emitter with a subwavelength gap distance, such that a significant amount of electrons can be photoexcited by near-field thermal radiation to contribute to the enhancement of thermionic current density. We theoretically demonstrate that the NETEC system can generate electric power at a significantly lower temperature than the standard thermionic generator, and the energy conver- sion e ciency can exceed 40%. Determinantal point processes (DPPs) are popular probabilistic models that arise in many machine learning tasks, where distributions of diverse sets are characterized by matrix determinants. In this paper, we develop fast algorithms to find the most likely configuration (MAP) of large-scale DPPs, which is NP-hard in general. Due to the submodular nature of the MAP objective, greedy algorithms have been used with empirical success. Read More

We have developed ultra-low-background NaI(Tl) crystals to reproduce the DAMA results with the ultimate goal of achieving purity levels that are comparable to or better than those of the DAMA/LIBRA crystals. Even though the achieved background level does not approach that of DAMA/LIBRA, it is crucial to have a quantitative understanding of the backgrounds. We describe the contributions of background sources quantitatively by performing Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations that are fitted to the measured data to quantify the unknown fractions of the background compositions. Retaining players over an extended period of time is a long-standing challenge in game industry. Significant effort has been paid to understanding what motivates players enjoy games. While individuals may have varying reasons to play or abandon a game at different stages within the game, previous studies have looked at the retention problem from a snapshot view. Read More

We represent Mat\'ern functions in terms of Schoenberg's integrals which ensure the positive definiteness and prove the systems of translates of Mat\'ern functions form Riesz sequences in $L^2(\R^n)$ or Sobolev spaces. Our approach is based on a new class of integral transforms that generalize Fourier transforms for radial functions. We also consider inverse multi-quadrics and obtain similar results. Read More

The precise determination of the CKM matrix element $\left| V_{cb}\right|$ is important for carrying out tests of the flavour sector of the Standard Model. In this article we present a preliminary analysis of the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay mode and its charge conjugate, selected in events that contain a fully reconstructed $B$-meson, using 772 million $e^+ \, e^- \to \Upsilon(4S) \to B \bar B$ events recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar \nu_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. Read More

We report the performance of an active veto system using a liquid scintillator with NaI(Tl) crystals for use in a dark matter search experiment. When a NaI(Tl) crystal is immersed in the prototype detector, the detector tags 48% of the internal K-40 background in the 0-10 keV energy region. We also determined the tagging efficiency for events at 6-20 keV as 26. Read More

Dynamical friction is thought to be a principal mechanism responsible for orbital evolution of massive black holes (MBHs) in the aftermath of galactic mergers and an important channel for formation of gravitationally bound MBH binaries. We use 2D radiative hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the efficiency of dynamical friction in the presence of radiative feedback from an MBH moving through a uniform density gas. We find that ionizing radiation that emerges from the innermost parts of the MBH's accretion flow strongly affects the dynamical friction wake and renders dynamical friction inefficient for a range of physical scenarios. We report the first observation of the polarization of $\Lambda/\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Beam-target double-spin asymmetries and target single-spin asymmetries were measured for the exclusive $\pi^0$ electroproduction reaction $\gamma^* p \to p \pi^0$, expanding an analysis of the $\gamma^* p \to n \pi^+$ reaction from the same experiment. The results were obtained from scattering of 6 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The kinematic range covered is $1. Read More

The fast neutron rate is measured at the site of NEOS experiment, a short baseline neutrino experiment located in a tendon gallery of a commercial nuclear power plant, using a 0.78-liter liquid scintillator detector. A pulse shape discrimination technique is used to identify neutron signals. Read More

An experiment to search for light sterile neutrinos was conducted at a reactor with a thermal power of 2.8 GW located at the Hanbit nuclear power complex. The search was done with a detector consisting of a ton of Gd-loaded liquid scintillator in a tendon gallery approximately 24 m from the reactor core. Read More

Recently, graphs have been widely used to represent many different kinds of real world data or observations such as social networks, protein-protein networks, road networks, and so on. In many cases, each node in a graph is associated with a set of its attributes and it is critical to not only consider the link structure of a graph but also use the attribute information to achieve more meaningful results in various graph mining tasks. Most previous works with attributed graphs take into ac- count attribute relationships only between individually connected nodes. Read More

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters $\bar{\eta}$ and $\xi\kappa$ in the radiative leptonic decay of the $\tau$ lepton using 703 f$\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of $e^+e^-\rightarrow\tau^+\tau^-\rightarrow (\pi^+\pi^0 \bar{\nu})(l^-\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma)$ $(l=e$ or $\mu)$. The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are $\bar{\eta} = -2. Read More

We report a measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ using 921~fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ and $\Upsilon(5S)$ resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed asymmetry is $$ A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1. Read More

We present a new mechanism for a spin blockade effect associated with a change in the type of magnetic anisotropy over oxidation state in a single molecule transistor, by taking an example of an individual Eu$_{2}$(C$_{8}$H$_{8}$)$_{3}$ molecule weakly coupled to non-magnetic electrodes without linker groups. The molecule switches its magnetization direction from in-plane to out-of-plane when it is charged. In other words, the magnetic anisotropy of the molecule changes from easy plane to easy axis when the molecule is charged. Read More

We report a search for $B^{0}\to \eta \eta $ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $698 \,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ containing $753 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to \eta \eta ) = (7.6^{+2. Read More

Dirac semimetals (DSMs) have topologically robust three-dimensional Dirac (doubled Weyl) nodes with Fermi-arc states. In heterostructures involving DSMs, charge transfer occurs at the interfaces, which can be used to probe and control their bulk and surface topological properties through surface-bulk connectivity. Here we demonstrate that despite a band gap in DSM films, asymmetric charge transfer at the surface enables one to accurately identify locations of the Dirac-node projections from gapless band crossings and to examine and engineer properties of the topological Fermi-arc surface states connecting the projections, by simulating adatom-adsorbed DSM films using a first-principles method with an effective model. CuCrO2 is a manifestation of a two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet which exhibits an incommensurate noncollinear magnetic structure similar to a classical 120 degree ordering. Using the inelastic neutron scattering technique, direct evidence of a magnon-phonon coupling in CuCrO2 is revealed via the mixed magnon-phonon character of the excitation mode at 12.5 meV as well as a minimum at the zone boundary. While pyrochlore iridate thin films are theoretically predicted to possess a variety of emergent topological properties, experimental verification of these predictions can be obstructed by the challenge in thin film growth. Here we report on the pulsed laser deposition and characterization of thin films of a representative pyrochlore compound Bi2Ir2O7. The films were epitaxially grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates and have lattice constants that are a few percent larger than that of the bulk single crystals. Read More

We report the first measurement of the $\tau$ lepton polarization in the decay ${\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \tau^- {\bar\nu_{\tau}}$ as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \tau^- {\bar\nu_{\tau}}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\bar\nu_{\ell}})$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays $\tau^- \rightarrow \pi^- \nu_{\tau}$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \rho^- \nu_{\tau}$. We use the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our preliminary results, $R(D^*) = 0. Read More

A hallmark of Weyl semimetal is the existence of surface Fermi arcs connecting two surface-projected Weyl nodes with opposite chiralities. An intriguing question is what determines the connectivity of surface Fermi arcs, when multiple pairs of Weyl nodes are present. To answer this question, we first show that the locations of surface Fermi arcs are predominantly determined by the condition that the Zak phase integrated along the normal direction to the surface is $\pi$. This paper reports a start-to-end study of suppression of stored beam oscillation at PLS-II. We report that the fast counter-kicker implemented in PLS-II suppressed vertical oscillation of the stored beam. During top-up injection in the magnetic spectroscopy beamline of PLS-II, the stored beam oscillation was suppressed by a factor of nine, and flux was improved by a factor of three. Read More

Antiferromagnetic spintronics is an emerging field; antiferromagnets can improve the functionalities of ferromagnets with higher response times, and having the information shielded against external magnetic field. Moreover, a large list of aniferromagnetic semiconductors and metals with N\'eel temperatures above room temperature exists. In the present manuscript, we persevere in the quest for the limits of how large can anisotropic magnetoresistance be in antiferromagnetic materials with very large spin-orbit coupling. Read More

We report measurements of target- and double-spin asymmetries for the exclusive channel $\vec e\vec p\to e\pi^+ (n)$ in the nucleon resonance region at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). These asymmetries were extracted from data obtained using a longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ target and a longitudinally polarized electron beam with energies 1.1, 1. Read More

We demonstrate a coherent and dynamic beam splitter based on light storage in cold atoms. An input weak laser pulse is first stored in a cold atom ensemble via electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). A set of counter-propagating control fields, applied at a later time, retrieves the stored pulse into two output spatial modes. Read More

The Lamb shift (self-energy) of an elliptic dielectric microcavity is studied. We show that the size of the Lamb shift, which is a small energy shift due to the system-environment coupling in the quantum regime, is dependent on the geometry of the boundary conditions. It shows a global transition depending on the eccentricity of the ellipsis. Read More

Recently, a compressed index for similar strings, called the FM-index of alignment (FMA), has been proposed with the functionalities of pattern search and random access. The FMA is quite efficient in space requirement and pattern search time, but it is applicable only for an alignment of similar strings without gaps. In this paper we propose the FM-index of alignment with gaps, a realistic index for similar strings, which allows gaps in their alignment. Read More

We investigate vibron-assisted electron transport in single-molecule transistors containing an individual Fe4 Single-Molecule Magnet. We observe a strong suppression of the tunneling current at low bias in combination with vibron-assisted excitations. The observed features are explained by a strong electron-vibron coupling in the framework of the Franck-Condon model supported by density-functional theory. Read More

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement introduced in 1935 deals with two particles that are entangled in their positions and momenta. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of EPR position-momentum entanglement of narrowband photon pairs generated from cold atoms. By using two-photon quantum ghost imaging and ghost interference, we demonstrate explicitly that the narrowband photon pairs violate the separability criterion, confirming EPR entanglement. We report a study of radiative decays of \chi_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the \chi_{b0}(1P). Read More

This paper describes the result of overall studies from development to characterization of undulator radiation. After three years of upgrading, PLS-II [1, 2] has been operating successfully since 21st March 2012. During the upgrade, we developed and installed an in-vacuum undulator (IVU) that generates brilliant X-ray beam. Read More

We show that there exists a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$-summand in the subgroup of the knot concordance group generated by knots with trivial Alexander polynomial. To this end we use the invariant Upsilon $\Upsilon$ recently introduced by Ozsv\'ath, Stipsicz and Szab\'o using knot Floer homology. We partially compute $\Upsilon$ of $(n,1)$-cable of the Whitehead double of the trefoil knot. Read More
