For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. Read More

We report on the construction, operation experience, and preliminary background measurements of an InGrid detector, i.e. a MicroMegas detector with CMOS pixel readout. Read More

We investigate the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (cMSSM) in the light of constraining experimental and observational data from precision measurements, astrophysics, direct supersymmetry searches at the LHC and measurements of the properties of the Higgs boson, by means of a global fit using the program Fittino. As in previous studies, we find rather poor agreement of the best fit point with the global data. We also investigate the stability of the electro-weak vacuum in the preferred region of parameter space around the best fit point. Read More

A comprehensive review of physics at an e+e- Linear Collider in the energy range of sqrt{s}=92 GeV--3 TeV is presented in view of recent and expected LHC results, experiments from low energy as well as astroparticle physics. The report focuses in particular on Higgs boson, Top quark and electroweak precision physics, but also discusses several models of beyond the Standard Model physics such as Supersymmetry, little Higgs models and extra gauge bosons. The connection to cosmology has been analyzed as well. Read More

In this work we present a search for (solar) chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). This novel experimental technique, in the field of dark energy research, exploits both the chameleon coupling to matter ($\beta_{\rm m}$) and to photons ($\beta_{\gamma}$) via the Primakoff effect. By reducing the X-ray detection energy threshold used for axions from 1$\,$keV to 400$\,$eV CAST became sensitive to the converted solar chameleon spectrum which peaks around 600$\,$eV. Read More

Constrained supersymmetric models like the CMSSM might look less attractive nowadays because of fine tuning arguments. They also might look less probable in terms of Bayesian statistics. The question how well the model under study describes the data, however, is answered by frequentist p-values. Read More

An X-ray detector based on the combination of an integrated Micromegas stage with a pixel chip has been built in order to be installed at the CERN Axion Solar Telescope. Due to its high granularity and spatial resolution this detector allows for a topological background suppression along with a detection threshold below $1\,\text{keV}$. Tests at the CAST Detector Lab show the detector's ability to detect X-ray photons down to an energy as low as $277\,\text{eV}$. Read More

The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) will be a forth generation axion helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) originating in the Sun via the Primakoff conversion of the solar plasma photons. In terms of signal-to-noise ratio, IAXO will be about 4-5 orders of magnitude more sensitive than CAST, currently the most powerful axion helioscope, reaching sensitivity to axion-photon couplings down to a few $\times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and thus probing a large fraction of the currently unexplored axion and ALP parameter space. We present preliminary results from the latest global fit analysis of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) performed within the Fittino framework. The fit includes low-energy and astrophysical observables as well as collider constraints from the non-observation of new physics in supersymmetric searches at the LHC. Furthermore, the Higgs boson mass and signal rate measurements from both the LHC and Tevatron experiments are included via the program HiggsSignals. Read More

Standard Model extensions often predict low-mass and very weakly interacting particles, such as the axion. A number of small-scale experiments at the intensity/precision frontier are actively searching for these elusive particles, complementing searches for physics beyond the Standard Model at colliders. Whilst a next generation of experiments will give access to a huge unexplored parameter space, a discovery would have a tremendous impact on our understanding of fundamental physics. Read More

We perform global fits to the parameters of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) and to a variant with non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM1). In addition to constraints from low-energy precision observables and the cosmological dark matter density, we take into account the LHC exclusions from searches in jets plus missing transverse energy signatures with about 5\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We also include the most recent upper bound on the branching ratio $B_s\to\mu\mu$ from LHCb. Read More

The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation infrastructures for tracking detectors as well as for calorimetry. Read More

Both ATLAS and CMS have published results of SUSY searches putting limits on SUSY parameters and masses. A non-discovery of SUSY in the next two years would push these limits further. On the other hand, precision data of low energy measurements and the dark matter relic density favor a light scale of supersymmetry. Read More

We investigate the implications for supersymmetry from an assumed absence of any signal in the first period of LHC data taking at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy and with 1 to 7 fb^(-1) of integrated luminosity. We consider the zero-lepton plus four jets and missing transverse energy signature, and perform a combined fit of low-energy measurements, the dark matter relic density constraint and potential LHC exclusions within a minimal supergravity model. A non-observation of supersymmetry in the first period of LHC data taking would still allow for an acceptable description of low-energy data and the dark matter relic density in terms of minimal supergravity models, but would exclude squarks and gluinos with masses below 1 TeV. We investigate the discovery potential of the LHC experiments for R-parity violating supersymmetric models with a stau as the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) in the framework of minimal supergravity. We classify the final states according to their phenomenology for different R-parity violating decays of the LSP. We then develop event selection cuts for a specific benchmark scenario with promising signatures for the first beyond the Standard Model discoveries at the LHC. Read More

Discoveries at the LHC will soon set the physics agenda for future colliders. This report of a CERN Theory Institute includes the summaries of Working Groups that reviewed the physics goals and prospects of LHC running with 10 to 300/fb of integrated luminosity, of the proposed sLHC luminosity upgrade, of the ILC, of CLIC, of the LHeC and of a muon collider. The four Working Groups considered possible scenarios for the first 10/fb of data at the LHC in which (i) a state with properties that are compatible with a Higgs boson is discovered, (ii) no such state is discovered either because the Higgs properties are such that it is difficult to detect or because no Higgs boson exists, (iii) a missing-energy signal beyond the Standard Model is discovered as in some supersymmetric models, and (iv) some other exotic signature of new physics is discovered. We show that presently available precision data are in good agreement with supersymmetry at a mass scale below 1 TeV. Using a SUSY point close to the best fit to present data, we give a projection of the capabilities of the LHC to constrain SUSY models and their parameters as function of the accumulated luminosity. We investigate the constraints on Supersymmetry arising from available precision measurements using a global fit approach. When interpreted within minimal supergravity (mSUGRA), the data provide significant constraints on the masses of supersymmetric particles, which are predicted to be light enough for an early discovery at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We provide predicted mass spectra including, for the first time, full uncertainty bands. Read More

We show how the sum of the two average tau polarisations in the decay chain chi20 -> stau1 tau -> tau tau chi10 in minimal supersymmetry with conserved R-parity can be measured at the LHC. This is accomplished by exploiting the polarisation dependence of the visible di-tau mass spectrum. Such a measurement provides information on the couplings of the involved SUSY particles and allows a more precise determination of the di-tau mass endpoint. Read More

A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. Read More

The Supersymmetry Les Houches Accord (SLHA) provides a universal set of conventions for conveying spectral and decay information for supersymmetry analysis problems in high energy physics. Here, we propose extensions of the conventions of the first SLHA to include various generalisations: the minimal supersymmetric standard model with violation of CP, R-parity, and flavour, as well as the simplest next-to-minimal model. Combined analyses at the Large Hadron Collider and at the International Linear Collider are important to unravel a difficult region of supersymmetry that is characterized by scalar SUSY particles with masses around 2 TeV. Precision measurements of masses, cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries allow to determine the fundamental supersymmetric parameters even if only a small part of the spectrum is accessible. Mass constraints for the heavy particles can be derived. Read More

The physics potential of the Large Hadron Collider in combination with the planned International Linear Collider is discussed for a difficult region of supersymmetry that is characterized by scalar SUSY particles with masses around 2 TeV. Precision measurements of masses, cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries allow to determine the fundamental supersymmetric parameters even if only a small part of the spectrum is accessible. This contribution investigates a prototype of a TPC readout with a highly pixelated CMOS ASIC, which is an option for charged particles tracking of the ILC. A triple GEM stack was joined with a TimePix and MediPix2 chip (pixel size of 55$\times$55 $\mu m^2$) and its readout properties were investigated with 5 GeV electrons. The spatial resolution of the cluster center reconstruction was determined as a function of drift distance using different cluster alhoritms and compared with Monte Carlo predictions. Read More

We have operated a Medipix2 CMOS readout chip, with amplifying, shaping and charge discriminating front-end electronics integrated on the pixel-level, as a highly segmented direct charge collecting anode in a three-stage gas electron multiplier (Triple-GEM) to detect the ionization from $^{55}$Fe X-rays and electrons from $^{106}$Ru. The device allows to perform moderate energy spectroscopy measurements (20 % FWHM at 5.9 keV $X$-rays) using only digital readout and two discriminator thresholds. Read More

We discuss the potential of combined analyses at the Large Hadron Collider and the planned International Linear Collider to explore low-energy supersymmetry in a difficult region of the parameter space characterized by masses of the scalar SUSY particles around 2 TeV. Precision analyses of cross sections for light chargino production and forward--backward asymmetries of decay leptons and hadrons at the ILC, together with mass information on chi^0_2 and squarks from the LHC, allow us to determine the underlying fundamental gaugino/higgsino MSSM parameters and to constrain the masses of the heavy, kinematically inaccessible sparticles. No assumptions on a specific SUSY-breaking mechanism are imposed. Read More

We discuss the potential of combined LHC and ILC experiments for SUSY searches in a difficult region of the parameter space, in which all sfermion masses are above the TeV scale. Precision analyses of cross sections of light chargino production and forward--backward asymmetries of decay leptons and hadrons at the ILC, together with mass information on \tilde{\chi}^0_2 and squarks from the LHC, allow us to fit rather precisely the underlying fundamental gaugino/higgsino MSSM parameters and to constrain the masses of the heavy virtual sparticles. For such analyses the complete spin correlations between the production and decay processes have to be taken into account. Read More

High-precision analyses of supersymmetry parameters aim at reconstructing the fundamental supersymmetric theory and its breaking mechanism. A well defined theoretical framework is needed when higher-order corrections are included. We propose such a scheme, Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis SPA, based on a consistent set of conventions and input parameters. Read More

This article presents the results of a realistic global fit of the Lagrangian parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with no assumptions on the SUSY breaking mechanism using the fit program Fittino. The fit is performed using the precision of future mass measurements of superpartners at the LHC and mass and polarized topological cross-section measurements at the ILC. Higher order radiative corrections are accounted for wherever possible to date. Read More

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. Read More

We present the results of a realistic global fit of the Lagrangian parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model to simulated data from ILC and LHC with realistic estimates of the observable uncertainties. Higher order radiative corrections are accounted for where ever possible to date. Results are obtained for a modified SPS1a MSSM benchmark scenario but they were checked not to depend critically on this assumption. Read More

The prospects for the discovery and exploration of low-energy Supersymmetry at future colliders, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the future international linear electron positron collider (ILC) are summarized. The focus is on the experimental techniques that will be used to discover superpartners and to measure their properties. Special attention is given to the question how the results from both machines could influence each other, in particular when they have overlapping running time. Read More

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. We present a case study for the synergy of combined LHC and LC analyses in Susy searches in which simultaneous running of both machines is very important. In this study only light non-coloured Susy particles are accessible at a Linear Collider with an initial energy of $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV. Nevertheless the precise analysis at the LC leads to an accurate Susy parameter determination and prediction of heavy Susy particles. Read More

We show how a measurement of the process pp-->t tbar H + X at the LHC and a measurement of the Higgs boson branching ratios BR(H-->b bar) and BR(H-->W+W-) at a future linear electron positron collider can be combined to extract a model-independent measurement of the top quark Yukawa coupling. We find that for 120 GeV < m_H < 200 GeV a measurement precision of 15% including systematic uncertainties can be achieved for integrated luminosities of 300 fb-1 at the LHC and 500 fb-1 at the LC at a centre-of-mass energy of 350 GeV. The interplay of prospective experimental information from both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Linear Collider (LC) in the investigation of the MSSM Higgs sector is analyzed in the SPS~1a and SPS 1b benchmark scenarios. Combining LHC information on the heavy Higgs states of the MSSM with precise measurements of the mass and branching ratios of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson at the LC provides a sensitive consistency test of the MSSM. This allows to set bounds on the trilinear coupling A_t. Read More

We study the potential of the TESLA linear collider operated at a center-of-mass energy of 500 to 1000 GeV for the measurement of the neutral Higgs boson properties within the framework of the MSSM. The process of associated Higgs boson production with subsequent decays of Higgs bosons into b-quark and tau-lepton pairs is considered. An integrated luminosity of 500 fb^{-1} is assumed at each energy. Read More

We demonstrate how the interplay of a future e^+e^- LC at its first stage with sqrt{s} sim 500 GeV and of the LHC could lead to a precise determination of the fundamental SUSY parameters in the gaugino/higgsino sector without assuming a specific supersymmetry breaking scheme. We demonstrate this for the benchmark scenario SPS1a, taking into account realistic errors for the masses and cross sections measured at the LC with polarised beams, including errors coming from polarisation measurements, and mass measurements at the LHC. The results clearly demonstrate the complementarity of the LHC and LC, and the benefit from the joint analyses of their data. Read More

This report summarizes the progress in the study of Higgs physics at a future linear electron positron collider at center-of-mass energies up to about 1000 GeV and high luminosity. After the publication of the TESLA Technical Design Report, an extended ECFA/DESY study on linear collider physics and detectors was performed. The paper summarizes the status of the studies with main emphasis on recent results obtained in the course of the workshop. Read More

The prospects for the measurement of the pseudoscalar admixture in the h-tau-tau coupling to a Standard Model Higgs boson of 120 GeV mass are discussed in a quantitative manner e+ e- collisions of 350 GeV centre-of-mass energy. Specific angular distributions in the h --> tau tau; tau --> rho nu decay chain can be used to probe mixing angles of scalar--pseudoscalar h-tau-tau couplings. In the discussion of the feasibility of the method, assumptions on the properties of a future detector for an e+ e- linear collider such as TESLA are used. Read More

We demonstrate that a measurement of the impact parameter in one-prong tau decay can be useful for the determination of the Higgs boson parity in the H/A --> tau tau; tau --> rho nu decay chain. We have estimated that for a detection set-up such as TESLA, use of the information from the tau impact parameter can improve the significance of the measurement of the parity of the Standard Model 120 GeV Higgs boson to 4.5 sigma, and in general by factor of about 1.
