We present first evidence for the process $e^+e^-\to \gamma\eta_c(1S)$ at six center-of-mass energies between 4.01 and 4.60~GeV using data collected by the BESIII experiment operating at BEPCII. Read More

Compressive sensing (CS) is an effective approach for fast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). It aims at reconstructing MR images from a small number of under-sampled data in k-space, and accelerating the data acquisition in MRI. To improve the current MRI system in reconstruction accuracy and speed, in this paper, we propose two novel deep architectures, dubbed ADMM-Nets in basic and generalized versions. Read More

The study of social networks --- where people are located, geographically, and how they might be connected to one another --- is a current hot topic of interest, because of its immediate relevance to important applications, from devising efficient immunization techniques for the arrest of epidemics, to the design of better transportation and city planning paradigms, to the understanding of how rumors and opinions spread and take shape over time. We develop a spatial social complex network (SSCN) model that captures not only essential connectivity features of real-life social networks, including a heavy-tailed degree distribution and high clustering, but also the spatial location of individuals, reproducing Zipf's law for the distribution of city populations as well as other observed hallmarks. We then simulate Milgram's Small-World experiment on our SSCN model, obtaining good qualitative agreement with the known results and shedding light on the role played by various network attributes and the strategies used by the players in the game. Using Lagrange interpolation and linear algebra, we prove that the MDS conjecture is equivalent to a condition on extensions of Reed-Solomon codes. Read More

We theoretically propose that, the single crystal formed TaS is a new type of topological semimetal, hosting ring-shaped gapless nodal lines and triply degenerate points (TDPs) in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In the presence of SOC, the each TDP splits into four TDPs along the high symmetric line in the momentum space, and one of the nodal ring remains closed due to the protection of the mirror reflection symmetry, while another nodal ring is fully gapped and transforms into six pairs ofWeyl points (WPs) carrying opposite chirality. The electronic structures of the projected surfaces are also discussed, the unique Fermi arcs are observed and the chirality remains or vanishes depending on the projection directions. Read More

This paper is concerned with a linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem with fixed terminal states and integral quadratic constraints. A Riccati equation with infinite terminal value is introduced, which is uniquely solvable and whose solution can be approximated by the solution for a suitable unconstrained LQ problem with penalized terminal state. Using results from duality theory, the optimal control is explicitly derived by solving the Riccati equation together with an optimal parameter selection problem. Read More

Using a data set of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. Read More

Variable annuities, as a class of retirement income products, allow equity market exposure for a policyholder's retirement fund with electable additional guarantees to limit the downside risk of the market. Management fees and guarantee insurance fees are charged respectively for the market exposure and for the protection from the downside risk. We investigate the impact of management fees on the pricing of variable annuity guarantees under optimal withdrawal strategies. Read More

Recently, a non-classical eigenvalue solver, called RIM, was proposed to compute (all) eigenvalues in a region on the complex plane. Without solving any eigenvalue problem, it tests if a region contains eigenvalues using an approximate spectral projection. Regions that contain eigenvalues are subdivided and tested recursively until eigenvalues are isolated with a specified precision. Read More

Cooperative map matching (CMM) uses the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) position information of a group of vehicles to improve the standalone localization accuracy. It has been shown, in our previous work, that the GNSS error can be reduced from several meters to sub-meter level by matching the biased GNSS positioning to a digital map with road constraints. While further error reduction is expected by increasing the number of participating vehicles, fundamental questions on how the vehicle membership within CMM affects the performance of the CMM results need to be addressed to provide guidelines for design and optimization of the vehicle network. We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \eta h_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9. Read More

We discuss self-consistently obtained ground-state electronic properties of monolayers of graphene and a number of beyond graphene compounds, including films of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), using the recently proposed strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) to the density functional theory. The SCAN meta-GGA results are compared with those based on the local density approximation (LDA) as well as the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). As expected, the GGA yields expanded lattices and softened bonds in relation to the LDA, but the SCAN meta-GGA systematically improves the agreement with experiment. Read More

POLAR is space-borne detector designed for a precise measurement of gamma-ray polarization of the prompt emissions of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50 keV - 500 keV. POLAR is a compact Compton polarimeter consisting of 40$\times$ 40 plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs. In May 2015, we performed a series of tests of the POLAR flight model with 100\% polarized x-rays beams at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beam-line ID11 aming to study thresholds, crosstalk between channels and responses of POLAR flight model to polarized X-ray beams. For quantitative phase imaging (QPI) based on transport-of-intensity equation (TIE), partially coherent illumination provides speckle-free imaging, compatibility with brightfield microscopy, and transverse resolution beyond coherent diffraction limit. Unfortunately, in a conventional microscope with circular illumination aperture, partial coherence tends to diminish the phase contrast, exacerbating the inherent noise-to-resolution tradeoff in TIE imaging, resulting in strong low-frequency artifacts and compromised imaging resolution. Here, we demonstrate how these issues can be effectively addressed by replacing the conventional circular illumination aperture with an annular one. Read More

Tensor factorization models offer an effective approach to convert massive electronic health records into meaningful clinical concepts (phenotypes) for data analysis. These models need a large amount of diverse samples to avoid population bias. An open challenge is how to derive phenotypes jointly across multiple hospitals, in which direct patient-level data sharing is not possible (e. Read More

During 2015 the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provided collisions of transversely polarized protons with Au and Al nuclei for the first time, enabling the exploration of transverse-single-spin asymmetries with heavy nuclei. Large single-spin asymmetries in very forward neutron production have been previously observed in transversely polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at RHIC, and the existing theoretical framework that was successful in describing the single-spin asymmetry in $p$$+$$p$ collisions predicts only a moderate atomic-mass-number ($A$) dependence. In contrast, the asymmetries observed at RHIC in $p$$+$$A$ collisions showed a surprisingly strong $A$ dependence in inclusive forward neutron production. Read More

We describe a prototype dialogue response generation model for the customer service domain at Amazon. The model, which is trained in a weakly supervised fashion, measures the similarity between customer questions and agent answers using a dual encoder network, a Siamese-like neural network architecture. Answer templates are extracted from embeddings derived from past agent answers, without turn-by-turn annotations. Read More

The cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetries of $\mu^{-}$ and $\mu^{+}$ from open heavy-flavor decays in polarized $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV were measured by the PHENIX experiment during 2012 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because heavy-flavor production is dominated by gluon-gluon interactions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, these measurements offer a unique opportunity to obtain information on the trigluon correlation functions. The measurements are performed at forward and backward rapidity ($1. Read More

Cooperative map matching (CMM) uses the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning of a group of vehicles to improve the standalone localization accuracy. It has been shown to reduce GNSS error from several meters to sub-meter level by matching the biased GNSS positioning of four vehicles to a digital map with road constraints in our previous work. While further error reduction is expected by increasing the number of participating vehicles, fundamental questions on how the vehicle membership of the CMM affects the performance of the GNSS-based localization results need to be addressed to provide guidelines for design and optimization of the vehicle network. Sliding window join is one of the most important operators for stream applications. To produce high quality join results, a stream processing system must deal with the ubiquitous disorder within input streams which is caused by network delay, asynchronous source clocks, etc. Disorder handling involves an inevitable tradeoff between the latency and the quality of produced join results. We prepared superconducting and non-superconducting FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) substrates (FeSe/STO) and investigated the superconducting transition induced by charge transfer between organic molecules and FeSe layers by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. At low coverage, donor- and acceptor-type molecules adsorbed preferentially on the non-superconducting and superconducting FeSe layers, respectively. Superconductivity was induced by donor molecules on non-superconducting FeSe layer, while the superconductivity was suppressed near acceptor molecules. Read More

Access to electronic health records (EHR) data has motivated computational advances in medical research. However, various concerns, particularly over privacy, can limit access to and collaborative use of EHR data. Sharing synthetic EHR data could mitigate risk. Read More

As a space-borne detector POLAR is designed to conduct hard X-ray polarization measurements of gamma-ray bursts on the statistically significant sample of events and with an unprecedented accuracy. During its development phase a number of tests, calibrations runs and verification measurements were carried out in order to validate instrument functionality and optimize operational parameters. In this article we present results on gain optimization togeter with verification data obtained in the course of broad laboratory and environmental tests. Read More

In exploratory tensor mining, a common problem is how to analyze a set of variables across a set of subjects whose observations do not align naturally. For example, when modeling medical features across a set of patients, the number and duration of treatments may vary widely in time, meaning there is no meaningful way to align their clinical records across time points for analysis purposes. To handle such data, the state-of-the-art tensor model is the so-called PARAFAC2, which yields interpretable and robust output and can naturally handle sparse data. Read More

We grow nearly freestanding single-layer 1T'-WTe2 on graphitized 6H-SiC(0001) by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), and characterize its electronic structure with scanning tunneling microscopy / spectroscopy (STM/STS). We demonstrate the existence of topological edge states at the periphery of single-layer WTe2 islands. Surprisingly, we also find a band gap in the bulk and the semiconducting behaviors of the single-layer WTe2 at low temperature, which is likely resulted from an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) transition. One of recent trends [30, 31, 14] in network architec- ture design is stacking small filters (e.g., 1x1 or 3x3) in the entire network because the stacked small filters is more ef- ficient than a large kernel, given the same computational complexity. Read More

The sensitivity of direct terahertz detectors based on self-mixing of terahertz electromagnetic wave in field-effect transistors is being improved with noise-equivalent power close to that of Schottky-barrier-diode detectors. Here we report such detectors based on AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron gas at 77~K are able to sense broadband and incoherent terahertz radiation. The measured photocurrent as a function of the gate voltage agrees well with the self-mixing model and the spectral response is mainly determined by the antenna. Read More

It is well-know that Hawking mass is nonnegative for a stable constant mean curvature ($CMC$) sphere in three manifold of nonnegative scalar curvature. R. Bartnik proposed the rigidity problem of Hawking mass of stable $CMC$ spheres. Read More

Cooperative localization with map matching has been shown to reduce Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) localization error from several meters to sub-meter level by fusing the GNSS measurements of four vehicles in our previous work. While further error reduction is expected to be achievable by increasing the number of vehicles, the quantitative relationship between the estimation error and the number of connected vehicles has neither been systematically investigated nor analytically proved. In this work, a theoretical study is presented that analytically proves the correlation between the localization error and the number of connected vehicles in two cases of practical interest. Motivated by the potential prospects of the $B_{c}^{\ast}$ meson samples at hadron colliders, the bottom-changing $B_{c}^{\ast}$ ${\to}$ ${\psi}(1S,2S)P$, ${\eta}_{c}(1S,2S)P$ weak decays are first studied with the perturbative QCD approach, where $P$ $=$ ${\pi}$ and $K$. It is found that branching ratio of the CKM-favored $B_{c}^{\ast}$ ${\to}$ $J/{\psi}{\pi}$ decay is about ${\sim}$ ${\cal O}(10^{-8})$, which might be measurable at the future LHC experiments. Most of computer vision focuses on what is in an image. We propose to train a standalone object-centric context representation to perform the opposite task: seeing what is not there. Given an image, our context model can predict where objects should exist, even when no object instances are present. Read More

Like other problems in computer vision, offline handwritten Chinese character recognition (HCCR) has achieved impressive results using convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods. However, larger and deeper networks are needed to deliver state-of-the-art results in this domain. Such networks intuitively appear to incur high computational cost, and require the storage of a large number of parameters, which renders them unfeasible for deployment in portable devices. In this paper, the problem of event-triggered consensus for linear continuous-time multi-agent systems is investigated. A new event-triggered consensus protocol based on a predictor is proposed to achieve consensus without continuous communication among agents. In the proposed consensus protocol, each agent only needs to monitor its states to determine its event-triggered instants. Read More

We have computed the surface energies, work functions, and interlayer surface relaxations of clean (111), (110), and (100) surfaces of Al, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Pt, and Au. Many of these metallic surfaces have technological or catalytic applications. We compare experimental reference values to those of the local density approximation (LDA), the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA), the PBEsol (PBE for solids) GGA, the SCAN meta-GGA, and SCAN+rVV10 (SCAN with a long-range van der Waals or vdW correction). The method of biomass estimation based on a volume-to-biomass relationship has been applied in estimating forest biomass conventionally through the mean volume (m3 ha-1). However, few studies have been reported concerning the verification of the volume-biomass equations regressed using field data. The possible bias may result from the volume measurements and extrapolations from sample plots to stands or a unit area. Read More

A crucial function for automated vehicle technologies is accurate localization. Lane-level accuracy is not readily available from low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers because of factors such as multipath error and atmospheric bias. Approaches such as Differential GNSS can improve localization accuracy, but usually require investment in expensive base stations. Read More

Originating from a broken spatial inversion symmetry, ferroelectricity is a functionality of materials with an electric dipole that can be switched by external electric fields. Spontaneous polarization is a crucial ferroelectric property, and its amplitude is determined by the strength of polar structural distortions. Density functional theory (DFT) is one of the most widely used theoretical methods to study ferroelectric properties, yet it is limited by the levels of approximations in electron exchange-correlation. Among the family of TMDs, ReS2 takes a special position, which crystalizes in a unique distorted low-symmetry structure at ambient conditions. The interlayer interaction in ReS2 is rather weak, thus its bulk properties are similar to that of monolayer. However, how does compression change its structure and electronic properties is unknown so far. Read More
