We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \eta h_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9. Read More

Consider the stochastic heat equation $\dot{u}=\frac12 u"+\sigma(u)\xi$ on $(0\,,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}$ subject to $u(0)\equiv1$, where $\sigma:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is a Lipschitz (local) function that does not vanish at $1$, and $\xi$ denotes space-time white noise. It is well known that $u$ has continuous sample functions; as a result, $\lim_{t\downarrow0}u(t\,,x)= 1$ almost surely for every $x\in\mathbb{R}$. The corresponding fluctuations are also known: $u(t\,,x)\approx 1 + \sigma(1)\pi^{-1/4}B_t$ a. Read More

An exact Quantum Kinetic Monte Carlo method is proposed to calculate electron transport for 1D Fermi Hubbard model. The method is directly formulated in real time and can be applied to extract time dependent dynamics of general interacting Fermion models in 1D. When coupled with Density Functional Theory and Maximally Localized Wannier Functions, our method can be used to predict electron transport in materials in presence of interfaces. Read More

It was shown in C. elegans that life-long treatments with low level of the prooxidant paraquat increased ROS, which then acted as the signal to slow down aging by activating the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. And deficiencies of the electron transport chain subunits increased longevity through similar mechanisms. Read More

Amorphous insulating oxides play a significant role in the contemporary electronic industry. Understanding the band alignment of heterogeneous interfaces containing amorphous structures helps to better control the carrier transport property at the interface. Classical band offset methods developed previously line-up eigenlevels with respect to an ideal bulk reference or vacuum level. Read More

An oriented graph $G^\sigma$ is a digraph without loops or multiple arcs whose underlying graph is $G$. Let $S\left(G^\sigma\right)$ be the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^\sigma$ and $\alpha(G)$ be the independence number of $G$. The rank of $S(G^\sigma)$ is called the skew-rank of $G^\sigma$, denoted by $sr(G^\sigma)$. Read More

Molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe$_2$) has attracted considerable interest for nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, spintronic, and valleytronic applications because of its modest band gap, high field-effect mobility, large spin-orbit-coupling splitting, and tunable 1T'/2H phases. However, synthesizing large-area, high-quality MoTe$_2$ remains challenging. The complicated design of gas-phase reactant transport and reaction for chemical vapor deposition or tellurization is nontrivial because of the weak bonding energy between Mo and Te. Read More

$[Background]$ Measurements of the neutron charge distribution are made difficult by the fact that, with no net charge, the neutron electric form factor, $G^n_E$, is generally much smaller than the magnetic form factor, $G^n_M$. In addition, measurements of these form factors must use nuclear targets which requires accurately accounting for nuclear effects. $[Method]$ The inclusive quasi-elastic reaction $^3\overrightarrow{\rm{He}}(\overrightarrow{e},e')$ was measured at Jefferson Lab. H2CO is one of the most readily detected organic molecules in protoplanetary disks. Yet its distribution and dominant formation pathway(s) remain largely unconstrained. To address these issues, we present ALMA observations of two H2CO lines (3_{12}-2_{11} and 5_{15}-4_{14}) at 0". Read More

This paper considers an invariant of modules over a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra, called the critical group. This generalizes the critical groups of complex finite group representations studied by Benkart, Klivans, Reiner and Gaetz. A formula is given for the cardinality of the critical group generally, and the critical group for the regular representation is described completely. Read More

Convolutional neural networks have recently demonstrated high-quality reconstruction for single-image super-resolution. In this paper, we propose the Laplacian Pyramid Super-Resolution Network (LapSRN) to progressively reconstruct the sub-band residuals of high-resolution images. At each pyramid level, our model takes coarse-resolution feature maps as input, predicts the high-frequency residuals, and uses transposed convolutions for upsampling to the finer level. Read More

Tensor contraction (TC) is an important computational kernel widely used in numerous applications. It is a multi-dimensional generalization of matrix multiplication (GEMM). While Strassen's algorithm for GEMM is well studied in theory and practice, extending it to accelerate TC has not been previously pursued. Read More

In this paper, we present a novel and general network structure towards accelerating the inference process of convolutional neural networks, which is more complicated in network structure yet with less inference complexity. The core idea is to equip each original convolutional layer with another low-cost collaborative layer (LCCL), and the element-wise multiplication of the ReLU outputs of these two parallel layers produces the layer-wise output. The combined layer is potentially more discriminative than the original convolutional layer, and its inference is faster for two reasons: 1) the zero cells of the LCCL feature maps will remain zero after element-wise multiplication, and thus it is safe to skip the calculation of the corresponding high-cost convolution in the original convolutional layer, 2) LCCL is very fast if it is implemented as a 1*1 convolution or only a single filter shared by all channels. The sPHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) will perform high precision measurements of jets and heavy flavor observables for a wide selection of nuclear collision systems, elucidating the microscopic nature of strongly interacting matter ranging from nucleons to the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma. A prototype of the sPHENIX calorimeter system was tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility as experiment T-1044 in the spring of 2016. The electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) prototype is composed of scintillating fibers embedded in a mixture of tungsten powder and epoxy. Read More

The static nature of current cyber systems has made them easy to be attacked and compromised. By constantly changing a system, Moving Target Defense (MTD) has provided a promising way to reduce or move the attack surface that is available for exploitation by an adversary. However, the current network- based MTD obfuscates networks indiscriminately that makes some networks key services, such as web and DNS services, unavailable, because many information of these services has to be opened to the outside and remain real without compromising their usability. The recent direct observation of gravitational waves (GW) from merging black holes opens up the possibility of exploring the theory of gravity in the strong regime at an unprecedented level. It is therefore interesting to explore which modifications of General Relativity (GR) could be detected. We construct an Effective Field Theory (EFT) satisfying the following requirements. Read More

In this paper, we will introduce a new heterogeneous fast multipole method (H-FMM) for 2-D Helmholtz equation in layered media. To illustrate the main algorithm ideas, we focus on the case of two and three layers in this work. The key compression step in the H-FMM is based on a fact that the multipole expansion for the sources of the free-space Green's function can be used also to compress the far field of the sources of the layered-media or domain Green's function, and a similar result exists for the translation operators for the multipole and local expansions. In this paper, we study a class of stochastic time-inconsistent linear-quadratic (LQ) control problems with control input constraints. These problems are investigated within the more general framework associated with random coefficients. This paper aims to further develop a new methodology, which fundamentally differs from those in the standard control (without constraints) theory in the literature, to cope with the mathematical difficulties raised due to the presence of input constraints. In this paper, we study the cooperative robust output regulation problem for discrete-time linear multi-agent systems with both communication and input delays by distributed internal model approach. We first introduce the distributed internal model for discrete-time multi-agent systems with both communication and input delays. Then, we define so-called auxiliary system and auxiliary augmented system. Read More

During 2015 the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provided collisions of transversely polarized protons with Au and Al nuclei for the first time, enabling the exploration of transverse-single-spin asymmetries with heavy nuclei. Large single-spin asymmetries in very forward neutron production have been previously observed in transversely polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at RHIC, and the existing theoretical framework that was successful in describing the single-spin asymmetry in $p$$+$$p$ collisions predicts only a moderate atomic-mass-number ($A$) dependence. In contrast, the asymmetries observed at RHIC in $p$$+$$A$ collisions showed a surprisingly strong $A$ dependence in inclusive forward neutron production. Read More

In this paper, we first present an adaptive distributed observer for a discrete-time leader system. This adaptive distributed observer will provide, to each follower, not only the estimation of the leader's signal, but also the estimation of the leader's system matrix. Then, based on the estimation of the matrix S, we devise a discrete adaptive algorithm to calculate the solution to the regulator equations associated with each follower, and obtain an estimated feedforward control gain. The proton is composed of quarks and gluons, bound by the most elusive mechanism of strong interaction called confinement. In this work, the dynamics of quarks and gluons are investigated using deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS): produced by a multi-GeV electron, a highly virtual photon scatters off the proton which subsequently radiates a high energy photon. Similarly to holography, measuring not only the magnitude but also the phase of the DVCS amplitude allows to perform 3D images of the internal structure of the proton. Read More

Shunt FACTS devices, such as, a Static Var Compensator (SVC), are capable of providing local reactive power compensation. They are widely used in the network to reduce the real power loss and improve the voltage profile. This paper proposes a planning model based on mixed integer conic programming (MICP) to optimally allocate SVCs in the transmission network considering load uncertainty. Read More

The cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetries of $\mu^{-}$ and $\mu^{+}$ from open heavy-flavor decays in polarized $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV were measured by the PHENIX experiment during 2012 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because heavy-flavor production is dominated by gluon-gluon interactions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, these measurements offer a unique opportunity to obtain information on the trigluon correlation functions. The measurements are performed at forward and backward rapidity ($1. Read More

Crowdsourced mobile video streaming enables nearby mobile video users to aggregate network resources to improve their video streaming performances. However, users are often selfish and may not be willing to cooperate without proper incentives. Designing an incentive mechanism for such a scenario is challenging due to the users' asynchronous downloading behaviors and their private valuations for multi-bitrate coded videos. Read More

Motivated by the potential prospects of the $B_{c}^{\ast}$ meson samples at hadron colliders, the bottom-changing $B_{c}^{\ast}$ ${\to}$ ${\psi}(1S,2S)P$, ${\eta}_{c}(1S,2S)P$ weak decays are first studied with the perturbative QCD approach, where $P$ $=$ ${\pi}$ and $K$. It is found that branching ratio of the CKM-favored $B_{c}^{\ast}$ ${\to}$ $J/{\psi}{\pi}$ decay is about ${\sim}$ ${\cal O}(10^{-8})$, which might be measurable at the future LHC experiments. Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a reductive Lie algebra over $\mathbb{C}$. For any simple weight module of $\mathfrak{g}$ with finite-dimensional weight spaces, we show that its Dirac cohomology is vanished unless it is a highest weight module. This completes the calculation of Dirac cohomology for simple weight modules since the Dirac cohomology of simple highest weight modules was carried out in our previous work. Read More

In this paper, we present a parallel numerical algorithm for solving the phase field crystal equation. In the algorithm, a semi-implicit finite difference scheme is derived based on the discrete variational derivative method. Theoretical analysis is provided to show that the scheme is unconditionally energy stable and can achieve second-order accuracy in both space and time. Read More

Intelligent network selection plays an important role in achieving an effective data offloading in the integrated cellular and Wi-Fi networks. However, previously proposed network selection schemes mainly focused on offloading as much data traffic to Wi-Fi as possible, without systematically considering the Wi-Fi network congestion and the ping-pong effect, both of which may lead to a poor overall user quality of experience. Thus, in this paper, we study a more practical network selection problem by considering both the impacts of the network congestion and switching penalties. Read More

Using a sample of 106 million $\psi(3686)$ decays, the branching fractions of $\psi(3686) \to \gamma \chi_{c0}, \psi(3686) \to \gamma \chi_{c1}$, and $\psi(3686) \to \gamma \chi_{c2}$ are measured with improved precision to be $(9.389 \pm 0.014 \pm 0. Read More

The main result of this paper is that there are examples of stochastic partial differential equations [hereforth, SPDEs] of the type $$ \partial_t u=\frac12\Delta u +\sigma(u)\eta \qquad\text{on $(0\,,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^3$}$$ such that the solution exists and is unique as a random field in the sense of Dalang and Walsh, yet the solution has unbounded oscillations in every open neighborhood of every space-time point. We are not aware of the existence of such a construction in spatial dimensions below $3$. En route, it will be proved that there exist a large family of parabolic SPDEs whose moment Lyapunov exponents grow at least sub exponentially in its order parameter in the sense that there exist $A_1,\beta\in(0\,,1)$ such that \[ \underline{\gamma}(k) := \liminf_{t\to\infty}t^{-1}\inf_{x\in\mathbb{R}^3} \log\mathbb{E}\left(|u(t\,,x)|^k\right) \ge A_1\exp(A_1 k^\beta) \qquad\text{for all $k\ge 2$}. The key finding in the DNA double helix model is the specific pairing or binding between nucleotides A-T and C-G, and the pairing rules are the molecule basis of genetic code. Unfortunately, no such rules have been discovered for proteins. Here we show that similar rules and intrinsic sequence patterns between intra-protein binding peptide fragments do exist, and they can be extracted using a deep learning algorithm. Read More

We study the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Lambda_c^{+}\to p\eta$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to p\pi^{0}$ using $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\Lambda_{c}^{+}$ pairs produced by $e^+e^-$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 4.6\; GeV$. The data sample was collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 $pb^{-1}$. Read More

This paper investigates the task assignment problem for multiple dispersed robots constrained by limited communication range. The robots are initially randomly distributed and need to visit several target locations while minimizing the total travel time. A centralized rendezvous-based algorithm is proposed, under which all the robots first move towards a rendezvous position until communication paths are established between every pair of robots either directly or through intermediate peers, and then one robot is chosen as the leader to make a centralized task assignment for the other robots. Computational ghost imaging is a robust and compact system that has drawn wide attentions over the last two decades. Multispectral imaging possesses spatial and spectral resolving abilities, is very useful for surveying scenes and extracting detailed information. Existing multispectral imagers mostly utilize narrow band filters or dispersive optical devices to separate lights of different wavelengths, and then use multiple bucket detectors or an array detector to record them separately. Second-generation sequencing technologies have replaced array-based technologies and become the default method for genomics and epigenomics analysis. Second-generation sequencing technologies sequence tens of millions of DNA/cDNA fragments in parallel. After the resulting sequences (short reads) are mapped to the genome, one gets a sequence of short read counts along the genome. Read More

Tunneling hetero-junctions (THJs) usually induce confined states at the regions close to the tunnel junction which significantly affect their transport properties. Accurate numerical modeling of such effects requires combining the non-equilibrium coherent quantum transport through tunnel junction, as well as the quasi-equilibrium statistics arising from the strong scattering in the induced quantum wells. In this work, a novel atomistic model is proposed to include both effects: the strong scattering in the regions around THJ and the coherent tunneling. Read More
