Capable of significantly reducing cell size and enhancing spatial reuse, network densification is shown to be one of the most dominant approaches to expand network capacity. Due to the scarcity of available spectrum resources, nevertheless, the over-deployment of network infrastructures, e.g. Read More

To guarantee the availability and reliability of data source in Magnetic Confinement Fusion (MCF) devices, incorrect diagnostic data, which cannot reflect real physical properties of measured objects, should be sorted out before further analysis and study. Traditional data sorting cannot meet the growing demand of MCF research because of the low-efficiency, time-delay, and lack of objective criteria. In this paper, a Time-Domain Global Similarity (TDGS) method based on machine learning technologies is proposed for the automatic data cleaning of MCF devices. Read More

At submicron manufacturing technology nodes, pro- cess variations affect circuit performance significantly. To counter these variations, engineers are reserving more timing margin to maintain yield, leading to an unaffordable overdesign. Most of these margins, however, are wasted after manufacturing, because process variations cause only some chips to be really slow, while other chips can easily meet given timing specifications. In this paper, by limiting twisted conical K\"ahler-Ricci flows, we prove the long-time existence and uniqueness of cusp K\"ahler-Ricci flow on compact K\"ahler manifold $M$ which carries a smooth hypersurface $D$ such that the twisted canonical bundle $K_M+D$ is ample. Furthermore, we prove that this flow converge to a unique cusp K\"ahler-Einstein metric. Read More

This paper concerns the initial-boundary value problem to 2D micropolar equations without angular viscosity in a smooth bounded domain. It is shown that such a system admits a unique and global weak solution. The main idea of this paper is to fully exploit the structure of this system and establish high order estimates via introducing an auxiliary field which is at the energy level of one order lower than micro-rotation. In this paper, we study the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation in Lagrangian coordinates. For some initial data $m_0$, we show that classical solutions to this equation blow up in finite time $T_{max}$. Before $T_{max}$, existence and uniqueness of classical solutions are established. Read More

In this letter, we study the charge response from higher derivatives over the background with homogeneous disorder introduced by axions. We first explore the bounds on the higher derivatives coupling from DC conductivity and the anomalies of causality and instabilities. Our results indicate no tighter constraints on the coupling than that over Schwarzschild-AdS (SS-AdS) background. Read More

In this work we consider $$ w_t=[(w_{hh}+c_0)^{-3}]_{hh},\qquad w(0)=w^0, $$ which is derived from a thin film equation for epitaxial growth on vicinal surface. We formulate the problem as the gradient flow of a suitably-defined convex functional in a non-reflexive space. Then by restricting it to a Hilbert space and proving the uniqueness of its sub-differential, we can apply the classical maximal monotone operator theory. Read More

In this paper, we study the stochastic gradient descent method in analyzing nonconvex statistical optimization problems from a diffusion approximation point of view. Using the theory of large deviation of random dynamical system, we prove in the small stepsize regime and the presence of omnidirectional noise the following: starting from a local minimizer (resp.~saddle point) the SGD iteration escapes in a number of iteration that is exponentially (resp. In this paper, we study and analyze the mini-batch version of StochAstic Recursive grAdient algoritHm (SARAH), a method employing the stochastic recursive gradient, for solving empirical loss minimization for the case of nonconvex losses. We provide a sublinear convergence rate (to stationary points) for general nonconvex functions and a linear convergence rate for gradient dominated functions, both of which have some advantages compared to other modern stochastic gradient algorithms for nonconvex losses. Reward augmented maximum likelihood (RAML) is a simple and effective learning framework to directly optimize towards the reward function in structured prediction tasks. RAML incorporates task-specific reward by performing maximum-likelihood updates on candidate outputs sampled according to an exponentiated payoff distribution, which gives higher probabilities to candidates that are close to the reference output. While RAML is notable for its simplicity, efficiency, and its impressive empirical successes, the theoretical properties of RAML, especially the behavior of the exponentiated payoff distribution, has not been examined thoroughly. The recently-introduced self-learning Monte Carlo method is a general-purpose numerical method that speeds up Monte Carlo simulations by training an effective model to propose uncorrelated configurations in the Markov chain. We implement this method in the framework of continuous time Monte Carlo method with auxiliary field in quantum impurity models. We introduce and train a diagram generating function (DGF) to model the probability distribution of auxiliary field configurations in continuous imaginary time, at all orders of diagrammatic expansion. The Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic quantum state of matter that does not exhibit classical magnetic order at zero temperature. The realization of such a state in actual materials is of significant importance, as it would provide a path to protected states for quantum information and also to Majorana fermions - both very active areas of interest in condensed matter physics. No solid evidence for the existence of such materials has been established in the laboratory, however, despite a decades-long search. Read More

The unusually high surface tension of room temperature liquid metal is molding it as unique material for diverse newly emerging areas. However, unlike its practices on earth, such metal fluid would display very different behaviors when working in space where gravity disappears and surface property dominates the major physics. So far, few direct evidences are available to understand such effect which would impede further exploration of liquid metal use for space. Read More

Let $p(\cdot):\ \mathbb R^n\to(0,\infty)$ be a variable exponent function satisfying the globally log-H\"{o}lder continuous condition, $q\in(0,\infty]$ and $A$ be a general expansive matrix on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this article, the authors first introduce the anisotropic variable Hardy-Lorentz space $H_A^{p(\cdot),q}(\mathbb R^n)$ associated with $A$, via the radial grand maximal function, and then establish its radial or non-tangential maximal function characterizations. Moreover, the authors also obtain characterizations of $H_A^{p(\cdot),q}(\mathbb R^n)$, respectively, in terms of the atom and the Lusin area function. Read More

The observation of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators provides, on the applied side, compact sources of coherent optical frequency combs that have already been applied in coherent communications, dual comb spectroscopy and metrology. On a fundamental level, it enables the study of soliton physics in driven nonlinear cavities. Microresonators are commonly multimode and, as a result, inter-mode interactions inherently occur among mode families - a condition referred to as "avoided mode crossings". Read More

Background: Mining gene modules from genomic data is an important step to detect gene members of pathways or other relations such as protein-protein interactions. In this work, we explore the plausibility of detecting gene modules by factorizing gene-phenotype associations from a phenotype ontology rather than the conventionally used gene expression data. In particular, the hierarchical structure of ontology has not been sufficiently utilized in clustering genes while functionally related genes are consistently associated with phenotypes on the same path in the phenotype ontology. We study a continuum model for solid films that arises from the modeling of one-dimensional step flows on a vicinal surface in the attachment-detachment-limited regime. The resulting nonlinear partial differential equation, $u_t = -u^2(u^3+\alpha u)_{hhhh}$, gives the evolution for the surface slope $u$ as a function of the local height $h$ in a monotone step train. Subject to periodic boundary conditions and positive initial conditions, we prove the existence, uniqueness and positivity of global strong solutions to this PDE using two Lyapunov energy functions. We observe for the first time the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \eta h_c$ with data collected by the BESIII experiment. Significant signals are observed at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section is measured to be $(9. Read More

Image reconstruction plays a critical role in the implementation of all contemporary imaging modalities across the physical and life sciences including optical, MRI, CT, PET, and radio astronomy. During an image acquisition, the sensor encodes an intermediate representation of an object in the sensor domain, which is subsequently reconstructed into an image by an inversion of the encoding function. Image reconstruction is challenging because analytic knowledge of the inverse transform may not exist a priori, especially in the presence of sensor non-idealities and noise. Read More

We carried out a pilot campaign of radio and optical band intra-day variability (IDV) observations of five blazars (3C66A, S5 0716+714, OJ287, B0925+504, and BL Lacertae) on December 18--21, 2015 by using the radio telescope in Effelsberg (Germany) and several optical telescopes in Asia, Europe, and America. After calibration, the light curves from both 5 GHz radio band and the optical R band were obtained, although the data were not smoothly sampled over the sampling period of about four days. We tentatively analyse the amplitudes and time scales of the variabilities, and any possible periodicity. Read More

We present the first results from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the Sub-millimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) camera, with its associated polarimeter (POL-2), on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii. We discuss the survey's aims and objectives. We describe the rationale behind the survey, and the questions which the survey will aim to answer. Read More

In layered transition metal dichalcogenides (LTMDCs) that display both charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity, the superconducting state generally emerges directly on suppression of the CDW state. Here, however, we report a different observation for pressurized TaTe2, a non-superconducting CDW-bearing LTMDC at ambient pressure. We find that a superconducting state does not occur in TaTe2 after the full suppression of its CDW state, which we observe at about 3 GPa, but, rather, a non-superconducting semimetal state is observed. Nanoantennas concentrate electromagnetic energy into deep-subwavelength volumes (hotspot), which benefits a wide range of applications such as spontaneous emission enhancement, nonlinear optics, nanolaser, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). To increase hotspot intensity, methods for sculpting individual nanoantenna resonance have been previously explored. Here, we study a nanoantenna-microcavity hybrid approach for highly cooperative hotspot enhancement, combining gold nanorods (AuNRs) for nanometer-scale light concentration and a resonant photonic crystal (PC) slab for efficient near-field excitation and optical feedback. Monte Carlo Tree Search techniques have generally dominated General Video Game Playing, but recent research has started looking at Evolutionary Algorithms and their potential at matching Tree Search level of play or even outperforming these methods. Online or Rolling Horizon Evolution is one of the options available to evolve sequences of actions for planning in General Video Game Playing, but no research has been done up to date that explores the capabilities of the vanilla version of this algorithm in multiple games. This study aims to critically analyse the different configurations regarding population size and individual length in a set of 20 games from the General Video Game AI corpus. Read More

We study the problem of approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model in graphs and hypergraphs. Our first result is a deterministic approximation scheme (an FPTAS) for the partition function in bounded degree graphs that is valid over the entire range of parameters $\beta$ (the interaction) and $\lambda$ (the external field), except for the case $\vert{\lambda}\vert=1$ (the "zero-field" case). A randomized algorithm (FPRAS) for all graphs, and all $\beta,\lambda$, has long been known. Read More

In this paper, we propose a learning-based low-overhead channel estimation method for coordinated beamforming in ultra-dense networks. We first show through simulation that the channel state information (CSI) of geographically separated base stations (BSs) exhibits strong non-linear correlations in terms of mutual information. This finding enables us to adopt a novel learning-based approach to remotely infer the quality of different beamforming patterns at a dense-layer BS based on the CSI of an umbrella control-layer BS. Domain Name System (DNS), one of the important infrastructure in the Internet, was vulnerable to attacks, for the DNS designer didn't take security issues into consideration at the beginning. The defects of DNS may lead to users' failure of access to the websites, what's worse, users might suffer a huge economic loss. In order to correct the DNS wrong resource records, we propose a Self-Feedback Correction System for DNS (SFCSD), which can find and track a large number of common websites' domain name and IP address correct correspondences to provide users with a real-time auto-updated correct (IP, Domain) binary tuple list. POLAR is space-borne detector designed for a precise measurement of gamma-ray polarization of the prompt emissions of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50 keV - 500 keV. POLAR is a compact Compton polarimeter consisting of 40$\times$ 40 plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs. In May 2015, we performed a series of tests of the POLAR flight model with 100\% polarized x-rays beams at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beam-line ID11 aming to study thresholds, crosstalk between channels and responses of POLAR flight model to polarized X-ray beams. Most of the recent successful methods in accurate object detection and localization used some variants of R-CNN style two stage Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) where plausible regions were proposed in the first stage then followed by a second stage for decision refinement. Despite the simplicity of training and the efficiency in deployment, the single stage detection methods have not been as competitive when evaluated in benchmarks consider mAP for high IoU thresholds. In this paper, we proposed a novel single stage end-to-end trainable object detection network to overcome this limitation. Read More

The electron-cyclotron maser is a process that generates intense and coherent radio emission in plasma. In this paper, we present a comprehensive parametric investigation on the electron-cyclotron-maser instability driven by non-thermal ring-beam electrons with intrinsic Alfv\'en waves which pervade the solar atmosphere and interplanetary space. It is found that both forward propagating and backward propagating waves can be excited in the fast ordinary (O) and extraordinary (X) electromagnetic modes. Read More

During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals and GW151226, produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). This paper considers the multi-armed thresholding bandit problem -- identifying all arms above a predefined threshold via as few pulls (or rounds) as possible -- proposed by Locatelli et al. [2016] recently. Although the proposed algorithm in Locatelli et al. Read More

Procedural textures are normally generated from mathematical models with parameters carefully selected by experienced users. However, for naive users, the intuitive way to obtain a desired texture is to provide semantic descriptions such as "regular," "lacelike," and "repetitive" and then a procedural model with proper parameters will be automatically suggested to generate the corresponding textures. By contrast, it is less practical for users to learn mathematical models and tune parameters based on multiple examinations of large numbers of generated textures. Read More

Results are presented from a semi-coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, using data collected during the first Advanced LIGO observing run (O1). The search combines a frequency domain matched filter (Bessel-weighted $\mathcal{F}$-statistic) with a hidden Markov model to track wandering of the neutron star spin frequency. No evidence of gravitational waves is found in the frequency range 60-650 Hz. Read More
