A beam optics scheme has been designed for the Future Circular Collider-e+e- (FCC-ee). The main characteristics of the design are: beam energy 45 to 175 GeV, 100 km circumference with two interaction points (IPs) per ring, horizontal crossing angle of 30 mrad at the IP and the crab-waist scheme [1] with local chromaticity correction. The crab-waist scheme is implemented within the local chromaticity correction system without additional sextupoles, by reducing the strength of one of the two sextupoles for vertical chromatic correction at each side of the IP. The TOTEM experiment at the CERN LHC has measured elastic proton-proton scattering at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and four-momentum transfers squared, |t|, from 6 x $10^{-4}$ GeV$^2$ to 0.2 GeV$^2$. Near the lower end of the |t|-interval the differential cross-section is sensitive to the interference between the hadronic and the electromagnetic scattering amplitudes. Read More

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Read More

There are several background sources which may affect the analysis of data and detector performans at the CLIC project. One of the important background source is halo muons, which are generated along the beam delivery system (BDS), for the detector performance. In order to reduce muon background, magnetized muon sweepers have been used as a shielding material that is already described in a previous study for CLIC [1]. Read More

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $\alpha_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC. Read More

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. We provide an assessment of the state of the art in various issues related to experimental measurements, phenomenological methods and theoretical results relevant for the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their uncertainties, with the specific aim of providing benchmarks of different existing approaches and results in view of their application to physics at the LHC. We discuss higher order corrections, we review and compare different approaches to small x resummation, and we assess the possible relevance of parton saturation in the determination of PDFS at HERA and its possible study in LHC processes. We provide various benchmarks of PDF fits, with the specific aim of studying issues of error propagation, non-gaussian uncertainties, choice of functional forms of PDFs, and combination of data from different experiments and different processes. In a recent paper, oscillations observed in the electron capture probability were attributed to the mixing of neutrino mass eigenstates. This paper is shown to be in error in two respects. Read More

Recent improvements in the low energy e+e- annihilation data and their influence on the determination of the hadronic contribution to the running of the QED fine structure constant at m_Z are discussed. Using CMD-2 and KLOE measurements in the rho region we obtain Delta alpha(5)_had(s) = 0.02758 +/- 0. Read More

This report summarizes a study of the physics potential of the CLIC e+e- linear collider operating at centre-of-mass energies from 1 TeV to 5 TeV with luminosity of the order of 10^35 cm^-2 s^-1. First, the CLIC collider complex is surveyed, with emphasis on aspects related to its physics capabilities, particularly the luminosity and energy, and also possible polarization, \gamma\gamma and e-e- collisions. The next CLIC Test facility, CTF3, and its R&D programme are also reviewed. Read More

Neutral kaons, and probably also neutrinos, exhibit oscillations between flavor eigenstates, as a result of being produced in a superposition of mass eigenstates. Several recent papers have addressed the question of the energies and momenta of the components of these states, and their effect on the coherence of the states and on the wavelength of the oscillations. We point out that the mass eigenstates need have neither equal momentum nor equal energy, but can nevertheless be coherent, and that a correct treatment of the kinematics recovers the usual result for the wavelength of the flavor oscillations. We discuss the possibility of a precision measurement of vacuum polarization in t-channel radiative Bhabha scattering at a high luminosity collider. For illustration, the achievable precision is estimated for the BaBar experiment at PEP-II and for the OPAL experiment at LEP. Read More

We extract the K^+-->pi^+e^+e^- amplitude scale at q^2=0 from the recent Brookhaven E865 high-statistics data. We find that the q^2=0 scale is fitted in excellent agreement with the theoretical long-distance amplitude. Lastly, we find that the observed q^2 shape is explained by the combined effect of the pion and kaon form-factor vector-meson-dominance rho, omega and phi poles, and a charged pion loop coupled to a virtual photon-->e^+e^- transition. Some consequences of the oscillations of neutral kaons and neutrinos are discussed, in particular, the possibility of oscillations of particles recoiling against kaons or neutrinos from the production process. We show that there are no stationary oscillations of these recoil particles in any order, and that the apparent long-wavelength oscillations, which might appear to result when an earlier treatment of ours was taken to higher order, are spurious. We show that the recoil particles may show a travelling interference pattern. Read More

A characteristic feature of the BCS theory of superconductivity is the quantum-mechanical coherence of particle and hole states. Direct observation of particle-hole coherence in unusual superconducting materials is a strong indication of traditional superconductivity. We use the Fermi liquid theory of superconductivity to study the implications of particle-hole coherence on properties of d-wave superconductors near surfaces. Read More

Quasiparticle states bound to the boundary of anisotropically paired superconductors, their contributions to the density of states and to the conductance of NIS junctions are studied both analytically and numerically. For smooth surfaces and real order parameter we find some general results for the bound state energies. In particular, we show that under fairly general conditions quasiparticle states with nonzero energies exist for momentum directions within a narrow region around the surface normal. Read More

The results concerning the theoretical evaluation of the small-angle Bhabha Scattering cross section obtained during the Workshop on Physics at LEP2 (CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, 1995) by the Working Group ``Event Generators for Bhabha Scattering'' are summarized. The estimate of the theoretical error on the cross section in the luminometry region is updated. Read More

We examine a recently published calculation which predicts an oscillatory behaviour for the decay of Lambdas produced together with a neutral kaon, and proposes a new expression for the wavelength of kaon strangeness oscillations. We modify the calculation by imposing the requirement that the interference of the K_L and K_S components of the kaon wave function occurs at a specific space-time point. With this requirement, the unusual results predicted vanish, and the conventional results are recovered. Read More

A fast and simple Monte Carlo program is presented that simulates single Bremsstrahlung in Bhabha scattering, e+e- --> e+e-gamma, without constraints on scattering angles. This allows the study of this process at arbitrarily small, or even vanishing, scattering angles. Experimental cuts can be imposed on an event-by-event basis, allowing for detailed studies of the process as a limitation to beam lifetimes, or a luminosity-measuring device, in e+e- storage rings.
