We study the phase diagram of fermionic polar molecules in a bilayer system, with an imbalance of molecular densities of the layers. For the imbalance exceeding a critical value the system undergoes a transition from the uniform interlayer superfluid to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state with a stripe structure, and at sufficiently large imbalance a transition from the FFLO to normal phase. Compared to the case of contact interactions, the FFLO regime is enhanced by the long-range character of the interlayer dipolar interaction, which can combine the s-wave and p-wave pairing in the order parameter. In this paper we study the future global existence and late-time behaviour of the Einstein-Boltzmann system with Bianchi I symmetry and a positive cosmological constant $\Lambda>0$. For the Boltzmann equation we consider the scattering kernel of Israel particles which are the relativistic counterpart of Maxwellian particles. Under a smallness assumption on initial data in a suitable norm we show that solutions exist globally in time and isotropize at late times. Read More

In this paper, we present a method which combines the flexibility of the neural algorithm of artistic style with the speed of fast style transfer networks to allow real-time stylization using any content/style image pair. We build upon recent work leveraging conditional instance normalization for multi-style transfer networks by learning to predict the conditional instance normalization parameters directly from a style image. The model is successfully trained on a corpus of roughly 80,000 paintings and is able to generalize to paintings previously unobserved. Read More

Online social spaces are increasingly salient contexts for associative tie formation. However, the racial composition of associative networks within most of these spaces has yet to be examined. In this paper, we use data from the social media platform Twitter to examine racial segregation patterns in online associative networks. Read More

We propose a novel technique to make neural network robust to adversarial examples using a generative adversarial network. We alternately train both classifier and generator networks. The generator network generates an adversarial perturbation that can easily fool the classifier network by using a gradient of each image. Read More

We present a new mechanism to produce the dark photon ($\gamma'$) in the early universe with a help of the axion ($a$) using a recently proposed dark axion portal. The dark photon, a light gauge boson in the dark sector, can be a relic dark matter if its lifetime is long enough. The main process we consider is a variant of the Primakoff process $f a \to f \gamma'$ mediated by a photon, which is possible with the axion--photon--dark photon coupling. Read More

The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) captures the total integrated emission from stars and galaxies throughout the cosmic history. The amplitude of the near-infrared EBL from space absolute photometry observations has been controversial and depends strongly on the modeling and subtraction of the Zodiacal light foreground. We report the first measurement of the diffuse background spectrum at 0. Read More

Recurrent Neural Networks are showing much promise in many sub-areas of natural language processing, ranging from document classification to machine translation to automatic question answering. Despite their promise, many recurrent models have to read the whole text word by word, making it slow to handle long documents. For example, it is difficult to use a recurrent network to read a book and answer questions about it. Read More

We propose a hierarchical approach for making long-term predictions of future frames. To avoid inherent compounding errors in recursive pixel-level prediction, we propose to first estimate high-level structure in the input frames, then predict how that structure evolves in the future, and finally by observing a single frame from the past and the predicted high-level structure, we construct the future frames without having to observe any of the pixel-level predictions. Long-term video prediction is difficult to perform by recurrently observing the predicted frames because the small errors in pixel space exponentially amplify as predictions are made deeper into the future. Understanding gene regulation is a fundamental step towards understanding of how cells function and respond to environmental cues and perturbations. An important step in this direction is to infer the transcription factor-gene regulatory network (GRN). However gene regulatory networks are typically constructed disregarding the fact that regulatory programs are conditioned on tissue type, developmental stage, sex, and other factors. Read More

We study the inner-most stable circular orbit(ISCO) of Kerr black hole in MOdified gravity(Kerr-MOG black hole) which is one of the exact solution of the field equation of modified gravity in strong gravity regime. Kerr-MOG black hole is constructed commonly known kerr metric in Boyer-Lindquist coordinate by adding repulsive parameter like Yukawa force which explained in quantum gravity. We explore what is some differences of the ISCOs of Kerr-MOG black hole and kerr black hole. Read More

During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals and GW151226, produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). Results are presented from a semi-coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the brightest low-mass X-ray binary, Scorpius X-1, using data collected during the first Advanced LIGO observing run (O1). The search combines a frequency domain matched filter (Bessel-weighted $\mathcal{F}$-statistic) with a hidden Markov model to track wandering of the neutron star spin frequency. No evidence of gravitational waves is found in the frequency range 60-650 Hz. Read More

The identification of high-redshift massive galaxies with old stellar populations may pose challenges to some models of galaxy formation. However, to securely classify a galaxy as quiescent, it is necessary to exclude significant ongoing star formation, something that can be challenging to achieve at high redshift. In this letter, we analyse deep ALMA/870um and SCUBA-2/450um imaging of the claimed "post-starburst" galaxy ZF-20115 at z=3. Read More

Associating image regions with text queries has been recently explored as a new way to bridge visual and linguistic representations. A few pioneering approaches have been proposed based on recurrent neural language models trained generatively (e.g. Read More

This paper introduces a blind watermarking based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). We propose an iterative learning framework to secure robustness of watermarking. One loop of learning process consists of the following three stages: Watermark embedding, attack simulation, and weight update. Read More

Exploiting certain robust topological inputs from the skyrmion description of compressed baryonic matter with a scale-chiral symmetric Lagrangian, we predict the equation of state that is consistent with the properties of nuclear matter at the equilibrium density, supports the maximum mass of massive compact star $\sim 2 M_\odot$ and surprisingly gives the sound velocity close to the "conformal velocity" $1/\sqrt{3}$ at densities $\gtrsim 3 n_0$. At the core of this result is the observation that parity-doubling occurs in the nucleon structure as density goes above $\sim 2n_0$ with a chiral-singlet mass $m_0 \sim (0.6-0. Read More

Primary cosmic-ray elemental spectra have been measured with the balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment since 2004. The third CREAM payload (CREAM-III) flew for 29 days during the 2007-2008 Antarctic season. Energies of incident particles above 1 TeV are measured with a calorimeter. Read More

For the alternating knots or links, mutations do not change the arc index. In the case of nonalternating knots, some semi-alternating knots or links have this property. We mainly focus on the problem of mutation invariance of the arc index for nonalternating knots which are not semi-alternating. Read More

Recent CNN-based object detection methods have drastically improved their performances but still use a single classifier as opposed to "multiple experts" in categorizing objects. The main motivation of introducing multi-experts is twofold: i) to allow different experts to specialize in different fundamental object shape priors and ii) to better capture the appearance variations caused by different poses and viewing angles. The proposed approach, referred to as multi-expert Region-based CNN (ME R-CNN), consists of three experts each responsible for objects with particular shapes: horizontally elongated, square-like, and vertically elongated. We investigate the ultraviolet (UV) behaviour of 6D N=1 supersymmetric effective (Abelian) gauge theories compactified on a two-torus ($T_2$) with magnetic flux. To this purpose we compute offshell the one-loop correction to the Wilson line state self-energy. The offshell calculation is actually necessary to capture the usual effective field theory expansion in powers of $(\partial/\Lambda)$. Read More

Even though illuminated lithium atoms tend to boil out, when the lattice is deep, molasses beams without extra cooling retain the atoms while producing sufficient fluorescent photons for detection. When the depth of the potential well at an antinode is 2. Read More

In this paper we analyze the gate activation signals inside the gated recurrent neural networks, and find the temporal structure of such signals is highly correlated with the phoneme boundaries. This correlation is further verified by a set of experiments for phoneme segmentation, in which better results compared to standard approaches were obtained. Read More

The Rashba effect leads to a chiral precession of the spins of moving electrons while the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) generates preference towards a chiral profile of local spins. We predict that the exchange interaction between these two spin systems results in a 'chiral' magnetoresistance depending on the chirality of the local spin texture. We observe this magnetoresistance by measuring the domain wall (DW) resistance in a uniquely designed Pt/Co/Pt zigzag wire, and by changing the chirality of the DW with applying an in-plane magnetic field. Many previous methods have showed the importance of considering semantically relevant objects for performing event recognition, yet none of the methods have exploited the power of deep convolutional neural networks to directly integrate relevant object information into a unified network. We present a novel unified deep CNN architecture which integrates architecturally different, yet semantically-related object detection networks to enhance the performance of the event recognition task. Our architecture allows the sharing of the convolutional layers and a fully connected layer which effectively integrates event recognition, rigid object detection and non-rigid object detection. Knot mosaic theory was introduced by Lomonaco and Kauffman in the paper on `Quantum knots and mosaics' to give a precise and workable definition of quantum knots, intended to represent an actual physical quantum system. A knot (m,n)-mosaic is an $m \! \times \! n$ matrix whose entries are eleven mosaic tiles, representing a knot or a link by adjoining properly. In this paper we introduce two variants of knot mosaics: period knot mosaics and toroidal knot mosaics, which are common features in physics and mathematics. Read More

Neuronal firing activities have attracted a lot of attention since a large population of spatiotemporal patterns in the brain is the basis for adaptive behavior and can also reveal the signs for various neurological disorders including Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, epilepsy and others. Here, we study the dynamics of a simple neuronal network using different sets of settings on a neuromorphic chip. We observed three different types of collective neuronal firing activities, which agree with the clinical data taken from the brain. Read More

We have developed ultra-low-background NaI(Tl) crystals to reproduce the DAMA results with the ultimate goal of achieving purity levels that are comparable to or better than those of the DAMA/LIBRA crystals. Even though the achieved background level does not approach that of DAMA/LIBRA, it is crucial to have a quantitative understanding of the backgrounds. We describe the contributions of background sources quantitatively by performing Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations that are fitted to the measured data to quantify the unknown fractions of the background compositions. We investigate properties of black hole (BH) binaries formed in globular clusters via dynamical processes, using direct N-body simulations. We pay attention to effects of BH mass function on the total mass and mass ratio distributions of BH binaries ejected from clusters. Firstly, we consider BH populations with two different masses in order to learn basic differences from models with single-mass BHs only. Read More

Thermal production of light dark matter with sub-GeV scale mass can be attributed to $3\rightarrow 2$ self-annihilation processes. We consider the thermal average for annihilation cross sections of dark matter at $3\rightarrow 2$ and general higher-order interactions. A correct thermal average for initial dark matter particles is important, in particular, for annihilation cross sections with overall velocity dependence and/or resonance poles. Read More

Arbitrary rotation of a qubit can be performed with a three-pulse sequence; for example, ZYZ rotations. However, this requires precise control of the relative phase and timing between the pulses, making it technically challenging in optical implementation in a short time scale. Here we show any ZYZ rotations can be implemented with a single laser-pulse, that is {\it a chirped pulse with a temporal hole}. Read More

This paper deals with the three-dimensional narrow escape problem in dendritic spine shaped domain, which is composed of a relatively big head and a thin neck. The narrow escape problem is to compute the mean first passage time of Brownian particles traveling from inside the head to the end of the neck. The original model is to solve a mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problem for the Poisson equation in the composite domain, and is computationally challenging. Read More

Deep neural nets have caused a revolution in many classification tasks. A related ongoing revolution---also theoretically not understood---concerns their ability to serve as generative models for complicated types of data such as images and texts. These models are trained using ideas like variational autoencoders and Generative Adversarial Networks. Read More

Using the complex parabolic rotations of holomorphic null curves in ${\mathbb{C}}^{4}$, we transform minimal surfaces in Euclidean space ${\mathbb{R}}^{3} \subset {\mathbb{R}}^{4}$ to a family of degenerate minimal surfaces in Euclidean space ${\mathbb{R}}^{4}$. Applying our deformation to holomorphic null curves in ${\mathbb{C}}^{3} \subset {\mathbb{C}}^{4}$ induced by helicoids in ${\mathbb{R}}^{3}$, we discover new minimal surfaces in ${\mathbb{R}}^{4}$ foliated by conic sections with eccentricity grater than $1$: hyperbolas or straight lines. Applying our deformation to holomorphic null curves in ${\mathbb{C}}^{3}$ induced by catenoids in ${\mathbb{R}}^{3}$, we can rediscover the Hoffman-Osserman catenoids in ${\mathbb{R}}^{4}$ foliated by conic sections with eccentricity smaller than $1$: ellipses or circles. The aim of this paper is to show both analytically and numerically the existence of a subwavelength phononic bandgap in bubble phononic crystals. The key is an original formula for the quasi-periodic Minnaert resonance frequencies of an arbitrarily shaped bubble. We study a model for switching strategies in the Prisoner's Dilemma game on adaptive networks of player pairings that coevolve as players attempt to maximize their return. We use a node-based strategy model with each player following one strategy (cooperate or defect) at a time with all of its neighbors. We improve on the existing pair approximation (PA) model for this system by using approximate master equations (AMEs). Read More

We have studied ferroelectricity and photovoltaic effects in atomic layer deposited (ALD) 40-nm thick SnTiO$_{x}$ films deposited directly onto p-type (001)Si substrate. We report a giant, ~22%, electroresistance modulation for a metallic alloy above room temperature. It is achieved by a small electric field of 2 kV/cm via piezoelectric strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling and the resulting magnetic phase transition in epitaxial FeRh/BaTiO3 heterostructures. This work presents detailed experimental evidence for an isothermal magnetic phase transition driven by tetragonality modulation in FeRh thin films, which is in contrast to the large volume expansion in the conventional temperature-driven magnetic phase transition in FeRh. Gapless boundary modes at the interface between topologically distinct regions are one of the most salient manifestations of topology in physics. Metallic boundary states of time-reversal-invariant topological insulators (TIs), a realization of topological order in condensed matter, have been of much interest not only due to such a fundamental nature, but also due to their practical significance. These boundary states are immune to backscattering and localization owing to their topological origin, thereby opening up the possibility to tailor them for potential uses in spintronics and quantum computing. The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon within a double-vessel cryostat. The large mass and proximity of the cryostat to the active detector volume demand the use of material with extremely low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the radioassay campaign conducted to identify suitable metals, the determination of factors limiting radiopure production, and the selection of titanium for construction of the LZ cryostat and other detector components. We propose an experiment to demonstrate a novel blockade mechanism caused by long-range anisotropic interactions in an ultracold dipolar gas composed of the recently observed "butterfly" Rydberg molecules. At the blockade radius, the strong intermolecular interaction between two adjacent molecules shifts their molecular states out of resonance with the photoassociation laser, preventing their simultaneous excitation. When the molecules are prepared in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) trap, the interaction's strength can be tuned via a weak external field. Read More

We present the result of searches for gravitational waves from 200 pulsars using data from the first observing run of the Advanced LIGO detectors. We find no significant evidence for a gravitational-wave signal from any of these pulsars, but we are able to set the most constraining upper limits yet on their gravitational-wave amplitudes and ellipticities. For eight of these pulsars, our upper limits give bounds that are improvements over the indirect spin-down limit values. Read More

On the basis of the modern understanding of MHD turbulence, we propose a new way of using synchrotron radiation, namely using synchrotron intensity gradients for tracing astrophysical magnetic fields. We successfully test the new technique using synthetic data obtained with the 3D MHD simulations and provide the demonstration of the practical utility of the technique by comparing the directions of magnetic field that are obtained with PLANCK synchrotron intensity dats to the directions obtained with PLANCK synchrotron polarization data. We demonstrate that the synchrotron intensity gradients (SIGs) can reliably trace magnetic field in the presence of noise and can provide detailed maps of magnetic-field directions. Read More

In this paper we consider the Einstein-Vlasov system with Bianchi VII$_0$ symmetry. Under the assumption of small data we show that self-similarity breaking occurs for reflection symmetric solutions. This generalizes the previous work concerning the non-tilted fluid case \cite{WHU} to the Vlasov case, and we obtain detailed information about the late-time behaviour of metric and matter terms. Study of the combined effects of strong electronic correlations with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) represents a central issue in quantum materials research. Predicting emergent properties represents a huge theoretical problem since the presence of SOC implies that the spin is not a good quantum number. Existing theories propose the emergence of a multitude of exotic quantum phases, distinguishable by either local point symmetry breaking or local spin expectation values, even in materials with simple cubic crystal structure such as Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$.
