Thermal-diffusional pulsation behaviors in planar as well as outwardly and inwardly propagating white dwarf carbon flames are systematically studied. In the 1D numerical simulation, the asymptotic degenerate equation of state and simplified one-step reaction rates for nuclear reactions are used to study the flame propagation and pulsation in white dwarfs. The numerical critical Zel'dovich numbers of planar flames at different densities ($\rho=2$, 3 and 4$\times 10^7$~g/cm$^3$) and of spherical flames (with curvature $c=$-0. Read More

Fingerprinting based WLAN indoor positioning system (FWIPS) provides a promising indoor positioning solution to meet the growing interests for indoor location-based services (e.g., indoor way finding or geo-fencing). Read More

One of the major challenges of employing a dual-frequency phase-shifting algorithm for phase retrieval is its sensitivity to noise. Yun et. al [H Yun, B Li, S Zhang. Read More

The ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density in low energy heavy-ion collision has been calculated by using the Green-Kubo method in the framework of an extended quantum molecular dynamics model. After the system almost reaching a local equilibration for a head-on $^{40}$Ca+$^{100}$Mo collision, thermodynamic and transport properties are extracted. Meanwhile, iso-vector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) of the collision system is also studied. Read More

The phenomenon of spin transfer torque (STT) has attracted a great deal of interests due to its promising prospects in practical spintronic devices. In this paper, we report a theoretical investigation of STT in a noncollinear magnetic tunnel junction under ac modulation based on the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, and derive a closed-formulation for predicting the time-averaged STT. Using this formulation, the ac STT of a carbon-nanotube-based magnetic tunnel junction is analyzed. Read More

Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) has recently been widely deployed in the Internet and adopted in the industry. It, however, does not impose any adaptation logic for selecting the quality of video fragments requested by clients and suffers from lackluster performance with respect to a number of desirable properties: efficiency, stability, and fairness when multiple players compete for a bottleneck link. In this paper, we propose a throughput-friendly DASH (TFDASH) rate control scheme for video streaming with multiple clients over DASH to well balance the trade-offs among efficiency, stability, and fairness. A phenomenological thermodynamic potential was constructed based on the symmetry analysis and property characterization of bulk DyCo2. An eight-order polynomial of Landau expansion was employed to describe the thermodynamic behavior of DyCo2. Several properties were reproduced including ferromagnetic transition temperature, magnetization curve, temperature dependence of magnetization. Read More

In this paper, we study an unconventional but practically meaningful reversibility problem of commonly used image filters. We broadly define filters as operations to smooth images or to produce layers via global or local algorithms. And we raise the intriguingly problem if they are reservable to the status before filtering. Read More

Recently manifold learning algorithm for dimensionality reduction attracts more and more interests, and various linear and nonlinear, global and local algorithms are proposed. The key step of manifold learning algorithm is the neighboring region selection. However, so far for the references we know, few of which propose a generally accepted algorithm to well select the neighboring region. Read More

With the recent development in mobile computing devices and as the ubiquitous deployment of access points(APs) of Wireless Local Area Networks(WLANs), WLAN based indoor localization systems(WILSs) are of mounting concentration and are becoming more and more prevalent for they do not require additional infrastructure. As to the localization methods in WILSs, for the approaches used to localization in satellite based global position systems are difficult to achieve in indoor environments, fingerprint based localization algorithms(FLAs) are predominant in the RSS based schemes. However, the performance of FLAs has close relationship with the number of APs and the number of reference points(RPs) in WILSs, especially as the redundant deployment of APs and RPs in the system. Foot-mounted inertial positioning (FMIP) and fingerprinting based WiFi indoor positioning (FWIP) are two promising solutions for indoor positioning. However, FMIP suffers from accumulative positioning errors in the long term while FWIP involves a very labor-intensive offline training phase. A new approach combining the two solutions is proposed in this paper, which can limit the error growth in FMIP and is free of any offline site survey phase. Read More

Estimating correspondence between two images and extracting the foreground object are two challenges in computer vision. With dual-lens smart phones, such as iPhone 7Plus and Huawei P9, coming into the market, two images of slightly different views provide us new information to unify the two topics. We propose a joint method to tackle them simultaneously via a joint fully connected conditional random field (CRF) framework. Read More

Labeled sequence transduction is a task of transforming one sequence into another sequence that satisfies desiderata specified by a set of labels. In this paper we propose multi-space variational encoder-decoders, a new model for labeled sequence transduction with semi-supervised learning. The generative model can use neural networks to handle both discrete and continuous latent variables to exploit various features of data. Read More

Fluctuations of conserved quantities, such as baryon, electric charge and strangeness number, are sensitive observables in heavy-ion collisions to search for the QCD phase transition and critical point. In this paper, we performed a systematical analysis on the various cumulants and cumulant ratios of event-by-event net-strangeness distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=7.7, 11. Large-area ($\sim$cm$^2$) films of vertical heterostructures formed by alternating graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenide(TMD) alloys are obtained by wet chemical routes followed by a thermal treatment at low temperature (300 $^\circ$C). In particular, we synthesized stacked graphene and W$_x$Mo$_{1-x}$S$_2$ alloy phases that were used as hydrogen evolution catalysts. We observed a Tafel slope of 38. Read More

In this paper, we show that the Away-step Stochastic Frank-Wolfe Algorithm (ASFW) and Pairwise Stochastic Frank-Wolfe algorithm (PSFW) converge linearly in expectation. We also show that if an algorithm convergences linearly in expectation then it converges linearly almost surely. In order to prove these results, we develop a novel proof technique based on concepts of empirical processes and concentration inequalities. Read More

The main limitation that constrains the fast and comprehensive application of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) based indoor localization systems with Received Signal Strength (RSS) positioning algorithms is the building of the fingerprinting radio map, which is time-consuming especially when the indoor environment is large and/or with high frequent changes. Different approaches have been proposed to reduce workload, including fingerprinting deployment and update efforts, but the performance degrades greatly when the workload is reduced below a certain level. In this paper, we propose an indoor localization scenario that applies metric learning and manifold alignment to realize direct mapping localization (DML) using a low resolution radio map with single sample of RSS that reduces the fingerprinting workload by up to 87\%. We propose a scheme to employ backpropagation neural networks (BPNNs) for both stages of fingerprinting-based indoor positioning using WLAN/WiFi signal strengths (FWIPS): radio map construction during the offline stage, and localization during the online stage. Given a training radio map (TRM), i.e. Read More

A new model of symbol grounding is presented, in which the structures of natural language, logical semantics, perception and action are represented categorically, and symbol grounding is modeled via the composition of morphisms between the relevant categories. This model gives conceptual insight into the fundamentally systematic nature of symbol grounding, and also connects naturally to practical real-world AI systems in current research and commercial use. Specifically, it is argued that the structure of linguistic syntax can be modeled as a certain asymmetric monoidal category, as e. Read More

For many profilometry techniques, phase unwrapping is one of the most challenging process. In order to sidestep the phase unwrapping process, Perciante et. al [Appl Opt 2015; 54(10):3018-23] proposed a wrapping-free method based on the direct integration of the spatial derivatives of the patterns to retrieve the phase. In this paper, we investigate conditions to represent derivative price under XVA explicitly. As long as we consider different borrowing/lending rates, XVA problem becomes a non-linear equa- tion and this makes finding explicit solution of XVA difficult. It is shown that the associated valuation problem is actually linear under some proper conditions so that we can have the same complexity in pricing as classical pricing theory. Read More

The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. Read More

The method of biomass estimation based on a volume-to-biomass relationship has been applied in estimating forest biomass conventionally through the mean volume (m3 ha-1). However, few studies have been reported concerning the verification of the volume-biomass equations regressed using field data. The generating function of cubic Hodge integrals satisfying the local Calabi-Yau condition is conjectured to be a tau function of a new integrable system which can be regarded as a fractional generalization of the Volterra lattice hierarchy, so we name it the fractional Volterra hierarchy. In this paper, we give the definition of this integrable hierarchy in terms of Lax pair and Hamiltonian formalisms, construct its tau functions, and present its multi-soliton solutions. Read More

Critical Infrastructures like power and communication networks are highly interdependent on each other for their full functionality. Many significant research have been pursued to model the interdependency and failure analysis of these interdependent networks. However, most of these models fail to capture the complex interdependencies that might actually exist between the infrastructures. Read More

We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations $\langle \cos (m\phi_1 + n\phi_2 - (m+n) \phi_3)\rangle$ for charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We find evidence for correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. Read More

We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. Read More

In this paper, we extend the optimal securitization model of Pag\`es [41] and Possama\"i and Pag\`es [42] between an investor and a bank to a setting allowing both moral hazard and adverse selection. Following the recent approach to these problems of Cvitani\'c, Wan and Yang [12], we characterize explicitly and rigorously the so-called credible set of the continuation and temptation values of the bank, and obtain the value function of the investor as well as the optimal contracts through a recursive system of first-order variational inequalities with gradient constraints. We provide a detailed discussion of the properties of the optimal menu of contracts. Read More

In this paper, we report a new type of instability of electron holes (EHs) interacting with passing ions. The nonlinear interaction of EHs and ions is investigated using a new theory of hole kinematics. It is shown that the oscillation in the velocity of the EH parallel to the magnetic field direction becomes unstable when the hole velocity in the ion frame is slower than a few times the cold ion sound speed. The number of phase wraps in 2D wrapped phase map can be completely eliminated, or greatly reduced by frequency shifting. But the wraps usually cannot be optimally reduced using the conventional fast Fourier transform (FFT) because the spectrum can be shifted only by an integer number in the frequency domain. In order to completely eliminate the phase wraps or achieve a significant phase wrap reduction, in this paper, we propose a fast and precise two-step method for phase wraps reduction, which uses the iterative local discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to determine the sub-pixel spectral peak location and the frequency shifting algorithm that operates in spatial domain to reduce the number of phase wraps. We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for mid-rapidity di-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The di-jet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. $A_{LL}$ results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. The birth of attosecond light sources is expected to inspire a breakthrough in ultrafast optics, which may extend human real-time measurement and control techniques into atomic-scale electronic dynamics. For applications, it is essential to obtain a single attosecond pulse of high intensity, large photon energy and short duration. Here we show that single 100-terawatt attosecond X-ray light pulse with intensity ${1\times10^{21}}\textrm{W}/\textrm{cm}^{{ 2}}$ and duration ${7. Read More

Although wireless communications in complex environments, such as underground, underwater, and indoor, can enable a large number of novel applications, their performances are constrained by lossy media and complicated structures. Magnetic Induction (MI) has been proved to be an efficient solution to achieve reliable communication in such environments. However, due to the small coil antenna's physical limitation, MI's communication range is still very limited if devices are required to be portable. Read More

We present a measurement of the total {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections in $p\bar{p}$ collision at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, in a final state consistent with leptonic $W$ boson decay and jets originating from heavy-flavor quarks from either a $W$ or a $Z$ boson decay. This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9. Read More

The Simplified Modal Method (SMM) provides a quick and intuitive way to analyze the performance of gratings of rectangular shapes. For non-rectangular shapes, a version of SMM has been developed, but it applies only to the Littrow-mounting incidence case and it neglects reflection. Here, we use the theory of mode-coupling in a tapered waveguide to improve SMM so that it applies to non-rectangular gratings at arbitrary angles of incidence. Read More

It is a challenge for Phase Measurement Profilometry (PMP) to measure objects with a large range of reflectivity variation across the surface. Saturated or dark pixels in the deformed fringe patterns captured by the camera will lead to phase fluctuations and errors. Jiang et al. Read More

The decoy-state high-dimensional quantum key distribution provides a practical secure way to share more private information with high photon-information efficiency. In this paper, based on detector-decoy method, we propose a detector-decoy high-dimensional quantum key distribution protocol. Employing threshold detectors and a variable attenuator, we can estimate single-photon fraction of postselected events and Eves Holevo information under the Gaussian collective attack with much simpler operations in practical implementation.
