We present first evidence for the process $e^+e^-\to \gamma\eta_c(1S)$ at six center-of-mass energies between 4.01 and 4.60~GeV using data collected by the BESIII experiment operating at BEPCII. Read More

We propose a modified Newton iteration for finding some nonnegative Z-eigenpairs of a nonnegative tensor. When the tensor is irreducible, all nonnegative eigenpairs are known to be positive. We prove local quadratic convergence of the new iteration to any positive eigenpair of a nonnegative tensor, under the usual assumption guaranteeing the local quadratic convergence of the original Newton iteration. Ultra-reliability and low-latency are two key components in 5G networks. In this letter, we investigate the problem of ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) in millimeter wave (mmWave)-enabled massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks. The problem is cast as a network utility maximization subject to probabilistic latency and reliability constraints. Read More

We develop an elasto-plastic description for the transient dynamics prior to steady flow of athermally yielding materials. Our mean-field model not only reproduces the experimentally observed non-linear time dependence of the shear-rate response to an external shear-stress, but also allows for the determination of the different physical processes involved in the onset of the re-acceleration phase after the initial critical slowing down and a distinct well defined fluidization phase. The evidenced power-law dependence of the fluidization time on the distance of the applied to an age dependent static yield stress is not universal but strongly dependent on initial conditions. As a dedicated synthetic aperture radio interferometer, the MingantU SpEctral Radioheliograph (MUSER), initially known as the Chinese Spectral RadioHeliograph (CSRH), has entered the stage of routine observation. More than 23 million data records per day need to be effectively managed to provide high performance data query and retrieval for scientific data reduction. In light of these massive amounts of data generated by the MUSER, in this paper, a novel data management technique called the negative database (ND) is proposed and used to implement a data management system for the MUSER. Fully Programmable Valve Array (FPVA) has emerged as a new architecture for the next-generation flow-based microfluidic biochips. This 2D-array consists of regularly-arranged valves, which can be dynamically configured by users to realize microfluidic devices of different shapes and sizes as well as interconnections. Additionally, the regularity of the underlying structure renders FPVAs easier to integrate on a tiny chip. Read More

Flow-based microfluidic biochips have attracted much atten- tion in the EDA community due to their miniaturized size and execution efficiency. Previous research, however, still follows the traditional computing model with a dedicated storage unit, which actually becomes a bottleneck of the performance of bio- chips. In this paper, we propose the first architectural synthe- sis framework considering distributed storage constructed tem- porarily from transportation channels to cache fluid samples. Read More

Using a data set of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. Read More

A wide bandwidth, dual polarized, modified four-square antenna is presented as a feed antenna for radio astronomical measurements. A linear array of these antennas is used as a line-feed for cylindrical reflectors for Tianlai, a radio interferometer designed for 21~cm intensity mapping. Simulations of the feed antenna beam patterns and scattering parameters are compared to experimental results at multiple frequencies across the 650 - 1420 MHz range. Read More

This is an elementary introduction to infinite-dimensional probability. In the lectures, we compute the exact mean values of some functionals on C[0,1] and L[0,1] by considering these functionals as infinite-dimensional random variables. The results show that there exist the complete concentration of measure phenomenon for these mean values since the variances are all zeroes. Read More

Confined diffusion characterizes transport in many natural and artificial devices, such as ionic channels, zeolites, and nanopores. While this important subject has been extensively studied analytically and by numerical simulations, systematic experimental investigations are rare. Here, we experimentally measure colloidal diffusion times in microchannels with periodically varying width and contrast results with predictions from the Fick-Jacobs theory and Brownian dynamics simulation. The recently proposed non-iterative load flow method, called the holomorphic embedding method, may encounter the precision issue, i.e. nontrivial round-off errors caused by the limit of digits used in computation when calculating the power-voltage (P-V) curve for a heavily loaded power system. Motivated by an important recent experiment [Deng et al., Science 354, 1557 (2016)], we theoretically consider the interplay between Andreev bound states(ABSs) and Majorana bound states(MBSs) in quantum dot-nanowire semiconductor systems with proximity-induced superconductivity(SC), spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting. The dot induces ABSs in the SC nanowire which show complex behavior as a function of Zeeman splitting and chemical potential, and the specific question is whether two such ABSs can come together forming a topological MBS. We derive out naturally some important distributions such as high order normal distributions and high order exponent distributions and the Gamma distribution from a geometrical way. Further, we obtain the exact mean-values of integral form functionals in the balls of continuous functions space with $p-$norm, and show the complete concentration of measure phenomenon which means that a functional takes its average on a ball with probability 1, from which we have nonlinear exchange formula of expectation. With a sample of 48,161 K giant stars selected from the LAMOST DR 2 catalogue, we construct torus models in a large volume extending, for the first time, from the solar vicinity to a Galactocentric distance of $\sim 20$ kpc, reaching the outskirts of the Galactic disc. We show that the kinematics of the K giant stars match conventional models, e.g. Read More

Parallaxes for 331 classical Cepheids, 31 Type II Cepheids and 364 RR Lyrae stars in common between Gaia and the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogues are published in Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) as part of the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). In order to test these first parallax measurements of the primary standard candles of the cosmological distance ladder, that involve astrometry collected by Gaia during the initial 14 months of science operation, we compared them with literature estimates and derived new period-luminosity ($PL$), period-Wesenheit ($PW$) relations for classical and Type II Cepheids and infrared $PL$, $PL$-metallicity ($PLZ$) and optical luminosity-metallicity ($M_V$-[Fe/H]) relations for the RR Lyrae stars, with zero points based on TGAS. The new relations were computed using multi-band ($V,I,J,K_{\mathrm{s}},W_{1}$) photometry and spectroscopic metal abundances available in the literature, and applying three alternative approaches: (i) by linear least squares fitting the absolute magnitudes inferred from direct transformation of the TGAS parallaxes, (ii) by adopting astrometric-based luminosities, and (iii) using a Bayesian fitting approach. In a weighted sequence, for every position of the sequence and every letter of the alphabet a probability of occurrence of this letter at this position is specified. Weighted sequences are commonly used to represent imprecise or uncertain data, for example, in molecular biology where they are known under the name of Position-Weight Matrices. Given a probability threshold $\frac1z$, we say that a string $P$ of length $m$ matches a weighted sequence $X$ at starting position $i$ if the product of probabilities of the letters of $P$ at positions $i,\ldots,i+m-1$ in $X$ is at least $\frac1z$. Due to the interaction between topological defects of an order parameter and underlying fermions, the defects can possess induced fermion numbers, leading to several exotic phenomena of fundamental importance to both condensed matter and high energy physics. One of the intriguing outcome of induced fermion number is the presence of fluctuating competing orders inside the core of topological defect. In this regard, the interaction between fermions and skyrmion excitations of antiferromagnetic phase can have important consequence for understanding the global phase diagrams of many condensed matter systems where antiferromagnetism and several singlet orders compete. We consider special cases of the two tree degree sequences problem. We show that if two tree degree sequences do not have common leaves then they always have edge-disjoint caterpillar realizations. By using a probabilistic method, we prove that two tree degree sequences always have edge-disjoint realizations if each vertex is a leaf in at least one of the trees. Read More

Recently vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication emerged as a key enabling technology to ensure traffic safety and other mission-critical applications. In this paper, a novel proximity and quality-of-service (QoS)-aware resource allocation for V2V communication is proposed. The proposed approach exploits the spatial-temporal aspects of vehicles in terms of their physical proximity and traffic demands, to minimize the total transmission power while considering queuing latency and reliability. Motivated by product detection in supermarkets, this paper studies the problem of object proposal generation in supermarket images and other natural images. We argue that estimation of object scales in images is helpful for generating object proposals, especially for supermarket images where object scales are usually within a small range. Therefore, we propose to estimate object scales of images before generating object proposals. Read More

One of the challenging issues in additive manufacturing (AM) oriented topology optimization is how to design structures that are self-supportive in a manufacture process without introducing additional supporting materials. In the present contribution, it is intended to resolve this problem under an explicit topology optimization framework where optimal structural topology can be found by optimizing a set of explicit geometry parameters. Two solution approaches established based on the Moving Morphable Components (MMC) and Moving Morphable Voids (MMV) frameworks, respectively, are proposed and some theoretical issues associated with AM oriented topology optimization are also analyzed. Microgrids are resources to restore critical loads after a natural disaster, enhancing the resiliency of a distribution network. To deal with stochastic power generated by intermittent energy resources within microgrids, such as wind turbines (WTs) and photovoltaics (PVs), most existing methods require forecast information. However, some microgrids may not be equipped with power forecasting tools. Read More

Here we report a method for visualization of volumetric structural information of live biological samples with no exogenous contrast agents. The process is made possible through a technique that involves generation, synthesis and analysis of three-dimensional (3D) Fourier components of light diffracted by the sample. This leads to the direct recovery of quantitative cellular morphology with no iterative procedures for reduced computational complexity. Read More

An algorithm for factoring polynomials over finite fields is given by Berlekamp in 1967. The main tool was the matrix Q corresponding to each polynomial. The apparent gas permeability of the porous medium is an important parameter in the prediction of unconventional gas production, which was first investigated systematically by Klinkenberg in 1941 and found to increase with the reciprocal mean gas pressure (or equivalently, the Knudsen number). Although the underlying rarefaction effects are well-known, the reason that the correction factor in Klinkenberg's famous equation decreases when the Knudsen number increases has not been fully understood. Most of the studies idealize the porous medium as a bundle of straight cylindrical tubes, however, according to the gas kinetic theory, this only results in an increase of the correction factor with the Knudsen number, which clearly contradicts Klinkenberg's experimental observations. We introduce a new action $S_{standard}^{(\rho,h; \Phi,g,B,C)}$ for D-branes that is to D-branes as the Polyakov action is to fundamental strings. This `standard action' is abstractly a non-Abelian gauged sigma model --- based on maps $\varphi: (X^{\!A\!z},E;\nabla)\rightarrow Y$ from an Azumaya/matrix manifold $X^{\!A\!z}$ with a fundamental module $E$ with a connection $\nabla$ to $Y$ --- enhanced by the dilaton term, the gauge-theory term, and the Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino term that couples $(\varphi,\nabla)$ to Ramond-Ramond field. In a special situation, this new theory merges the theory of harmonic maps and a gauge theory, with a nilpotent type fuzzy extension. Read More

We present a detailed study of a confined circular flare dynamics associated with 3 UV late phases in order to understand more precisely which topological elements are present and how they constrain the dynamics of the flare. We perform a non-linear force free field extrapolation of the confined flare observed with the HMI and AIA instruments onboard SDO. From the 3D magnetic field we compute the squashing factor and we analyse its distribution. Read More

In this work, we construct a generalized Kane model with a new coupling term between itinerant electron spins and local magnetic moments of anti-ferromagnetic ordering in order to describe the low energy effective physics in a large family of anti-ferromagnetic half-Heusler materials. Topological properties of this generalized Kane model is studied and a large variety of topological phases, including Dirac semimetal phase, Weyl semimetal phase, nodal line semimetal phase, type-B triple point semimetal phase, topological mirror (or glide) insulating phase and anti-ferromagnetic topological insulating phase, are identified in different parameter regions of our effective models. In particular, we find that the system is always driven into the anti-ferromagnetic topological insulator phase once a bulk band gap is open, irrespective of the magnetic moment direction, thus providing a robust realization of anti-ferromagentic topological insulators. As a continuation of \cite{LXY}, the paper aims to justify the high Reynolds numbers limit for the MHD system with Prandtl boundary layer expansion when no-slip boundary condition is imposed on the velocity field and the perfect conducting boundary condition is given for the magnetic field. Under an assumption that the viscosity and resistivity coefficients are of the same order and the initial tangential magnetic field on the boundary is not degenerate, we justify the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansion and give a $L^{\infty}$ estimate on the error by multi-scale analysis. Solar flares are generally believed to be powered by free magnetic energy stored in the corona, but the build up of coronal energy alone may be insufficient for the imminent flare occurrence. The flare onset mechanism is a critical but less understood problem, insights into which could be gained from small-scale energy releases known as precursors, which are observed as small pre-flare brightenings in various wavelengths, and also from certain small-scale magnetic configurations such as the opposite polarity fluxes, where magnetic orientation of small bipoles is opposite to that of the ambient main polarities. However, high-resolution observations of flare precursors together with the associated photospheric magnetic field dynamics are lacking. Read More

In this paper, we first provide a new perspective to divide existing high performance object detection methods into direct and indirect regressions. Direct regression performs boundary regression by predicting the offsets from a given point, while indirect regression predicts the offsets from some bounding box proposals. Then we analyze the drawbacks of the indirect regression, which the recent state-of-the-art detection structures like Faster-RCNN and SSD follows, for multi-oriented scene text detection, and point out the potential superiority of direct regression. The topological charge density and topological susceptibility are determined by multi-probing approximation using overlap fermions in quenched SU(3) gauge theory. Then we investigate the topological structure of the quenched QCD vacuum, and compare it with results from the all-scale topological density, the results are consistent. Random permuted topological charge density is used to check whether these structures represent underlying ordered properties. Read More

Despite the fact that many 3D human activity benchmarks being proposed, most existing action datasets focus on the action recognition tasks for the segmented videos. There is a lack of standard large-scale benchmarks, especially for current popular data-hungry deep learning based methods. In this paper, we introduce a new large scale benchmark (PKU-MMD) for continuous multi-modality 3D human action understanding and cover a wide range of complex human activities with well annotated information. Modern topic identification (topic ID) systems for speech use automatic speech recognition (ASR) to produce speech transcripts, and perform supervised classification on such ASR outputs. However, under resource-limited conditions, the manually transcribed speech required to develop standard ASR systems can be severely limited or unavailable. In this paper, we investigate alternative unsupervised solutions to obtaining tokenizations of speech in terms of a vocabulary of automatically discovered word-like or phoneme-like units, without depending on the supervised training of ASR systems. In this paper, we reveal the importance and benefits of introducing second-order operations into deep neural networks. We propose a novel approach named Second-Order Response Transform (SORT), which appends element-wise product transform to the linear sum of a two-branch network module. A direct advantage of SORT is to facilitate cross-branch response propagation, so that each branch can update its weights based on the current status of the other branch. Read More

We combine Gaia DR1, PS1, SDSS and 2MASS astrometry to measure proper motions for 350 million sources across three-fourths of the sky down to a magnitude of $m_r\sim20$\,. Using positions of galaxies from PS1, we build a common reference frame for the multi-epoch PS1, single-epoch SDSS and 2MASS data, and calibrate the data in small angular patches to this frame. As the Gaia DR1 excludes resolved galaxy images, we choose a different approach to calibrate its positions to this reference frame: we exploit the fact that the proper motions of stars in these patches are {\it linear}. The vortices that appear repeatedly and suggest turbulent dynamics are crucial to the understanding of sheared turbulence. These vortices produce order out of chaos, benefiting the turbulence modelling that focuses only on statistically stable quantities. In three dimensions, the hairpin vortices play such a fundamental role in the transport of momentum and energy for wall bounded sheared turbulence. Read More

We investigate the clustering properties of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $z\sim6$ - $8$. Using the semi-analytical model {\scshape Meraxes} constructed as part of the Dark-ages Reionization And Galaxy-formation Observables from Numerical Simulation (DRAGONS) project, we predict the angular correlation function (ACF) of LBGs at $z\sim6$ - $8$. Overall, we find that the predicted ACFs are in good agreement with recent measurements at $z\sim 6$ and $z\sim 7. Read More
