The unique physics opportunities accessible with nuclear collisions at the CERN Future Circular Collider (FCC) are summarized. Lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-lead (pPb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 and 63 TeV respectively with $\mathcal{L}_{int}$ = 33 nb$^{-1}$ and 8 pb$^{-1}$ monthly integrated luminosities, will provide unprecedented experimental conditions to study quark-gluon matter at temperatures ${\cal O}$(1 GeV). The following topics are succinctly discussed: (i) charm-quark densities thrice larger than at the LHC, leading to direct heavy-quark impact in the bulk QGP properties, (ii) quarkonia, including $\Upsilon(1S)$, melting at temperatures up to five times above the QCD critical temperature, (iii) access to initial-state nuclear parton distributions (nPDF) at fractional momenta as low as $x\approx 10^{-7}$, (iv) availability of $5\cdot 10^5$ top-quark pairs per run to study the high-$x$ gluon nPDF and the energy loss properties of boosted colour-antennas, (v) study of possible Higgs boson suppression in the QGP, and (vi) high-luminosity $\gamma\gamma$ (ultraperipheral) collisions at c. We show using molecular dynamics simulations that simple diatomic molecules in the glassy state exhibit only limited participation in the Johari-Goldstein (JG) relaxation process. That is, with sufficient cooling local reorientations are essentially frozen for some molecules, while others continue to change their orientation significantly. The elusive connection between dynamics and local structure in supercooled liquids is an important piece of the puzzle in the unsolved problem of the glass transition. The Johari-Goldstein beta relaxation, ubiquitous in glass-forming liquids, exhibits mean properties that are strongly correlated to the long-time alpha dynamics. We present new viscosity and equation of state (EoS) results extending to high pressures for o-terphenyl, salol, and dibutylphthalate. Using these and data from the literature, we show that the three liquids all conform to density scaling; that is, their reduce viscosities and reorientational relaxation times are a function of the ratio of temperature and density with the latter raised to a constant. The Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study is aimed at assessing the physics potential and the technical feasibility of a new collider with centre-of-mass energies, in the hadron-hadron collision mode, seven times larger than the nominal LHC energies. Operating such machine with heavy ions is an option that is being considered in the accelerator design studies. The local segmental and global dynamics of a series of polypropylene glycol / silica nanocomposites were studied using rheometry and mechanical and dielectric spectroscopies. The particles cause substantial changes in the rheology, including higher viscosities that become non-Newtonian and the appearance of stress overshoots in the transient shear viscosity. Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV/c, as well as in systems of different size ($p+p$, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158$A$ GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure $\Phi_{p_T}$ by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations $\Delta[P_T, N]$ and $\Sigma[P_T, N]$. Forward calorimetry in the PHOBOS detector has been used to study charged hadron production in d+Au, p+Au and n+Au collisions at sqrt(s_nn) = 200 GeV. The forward proton calorimeter detectors are described and a procedure for determining collision centrality with these detectors is detailed. A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. The origin of the dramatic changes in the behavior of liquids as they approach their vitreous state - increases of many orders of magnitude in transport properties and dynamic time scales - is a major unsolved problem in condensed matter. These changes are accompanied by greater dynamic heterogeneity, which refers to both spatial variation and spatial correlation of molecular mobilities. The question is whether the changing dynamics is coupled to this heterogeneity; that is, does the latter cause the former? The Future Circular Collider (FCC) design study is aimed at assessing the physics potential and the technical feasibility of a new collider with centre-of-mass energies, in the hadron-hadron collision mode including proton and nucleus beams, more than seven-times larger than the nominal LHC energies. An electron-positron collider in the same tunnel is also considered as an intermediate step, which would provide the electron-hadron option in the long term. An equation is derived that expresses the thermodynamic scaling exponent, g, which superposes relaxation times and other measures of molecular mobility determined over a range of temperatures and densities, in terms of static, physical quantities. A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). A current focus in studies of the glass transition is the role of dynamic heterogeneities. Although these efforts may clarify the origin of the spectacular change in properties of liquids approaching vitrification, we point out that a seemingly related phenomenon, thermorheological complexity in polymers, must involve different mechanisms. We look for fluctuations expected for the QCD critical point using an intermittency analysis in the transverse momentum phase space of protons produced around midrapidity in the 12.5\% most central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions at the maximum SPS energy of 158$A$~GeV. Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in semi-central C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra and total yields are determined as a function of centrality. The lower bound usually cited for Poisson's ratio {\nu} is -1, derived from the relationship between {\nu} and the bulk and shear moduli. From consideration of the longitudinal and biaxial moduli, we recently determined that the lower bound on {\nu} for isotropic materials is actually 1/5, a value also consistent with experimental measurements on real materials. Molecular dynamics simulations (mds) were carried out to investigate the reorientational motion of a rigid (fixed bond length), asymmetric diatomic molecule in the liquid and glassy states. The two approaches to analyzing the large strain behavior of rubbery networks are phenomenologically, using strain energy functions drawn from continuum mechanics, and molecular models, which apply statistical mechanics to compute the effect of chain orientation on the entropy. The early rubber elasticity models ignored intermolecular interactions, whereas later developments ("constraint models") included the effect of entanglements or steric constraints on the mechanical stress. Kaons and protons carry large parts of two conserved quantities, strangeness and baryon number. It is argued that their correlation and thus also fluctuations are sensitive to conditions prevailing at the anticipated parton-hadron phase boundary. The centrality dependence of the midrapidity charged-particle multiplicity density ($|\eta|$$<$1) is presented for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at RHIC over a broad range of collision energies. The multiplicity measured in the Cu+Cu system is found to be similar to that measured in the Au+Au system, for an equivalent N$_{\rm part}$, with the observed factorization in energy and centrality still persistent in the smaller Cu+Cu system. The extent of the similarities observed for bulk particle production is tested by a comparative analysis of the inclusive transverse momentum distributions for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions near midrapidity. Phi meson production is studied by the NA49 Collaboration in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A and 158A GeV beam energy. The data are compared with measurements at lower and higher energies and to microscopic and thermal models. The energy dependence of yields and spectral distributions is compatible with the assumption that partonic degrees of freedom set in at low SPS energies. Read More

We present first results on event-by-event elliptic flow fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus collisions corrected for effects of non-flow correlations where the magnitude of non-flow correlations has been independently measured in data. Over the measured range in centrality, we see large relative fluctuations of 25-50%. The results are consistent with predictions from both color glass condensate and Glauber type initial condition calculations of the event-by-event participant eccentricity fluctuations. Read More

We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) in February 2008. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of quark and gluon fragmentation into hadrons at different accelerator facilities (LEP, B-factories, JLab, HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) light-quark and gluon fragmentation in the vacuum including theoretical (global fits analyses and MLLA) and experimental (data from e+e-, p-p, e-p collisions) aspects, (ii) strange and heavy-quark fragmentation, (iii) parton fragmentation in cold QCD matter (nuclear DIS), and (iv) medium-modified fragmentation in hot and dense QCD matter (high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions). In this paper, we investigate various ways of defining the initial source eccentricity using the Monte Carlo Glauber (MCG) approach. In particular, we examine the participant eccentricity, which quantifies the eccentricity of the initial source shape by the major axes of the ellipse formed by the interaction points of the participating nucleons. We show that reasonable variation of the density parameters in the Glauber calculation, as well as variations in how matter production is modeled, do not significantly modify the already established behavior of the participant eccentricity as a function of collision centrality. We present an Adaptively Biased Molecular Dynamics (ABMD) method for the computation of the free energy surface of a reaction coordinate using non-equilibrium dynamics. The ABMD method belongs to the general category of umbrella sampling methods with an evolving biasing potential, and is inspired by the metadynamics method.
