We report the first measurement of the fraction of $J/\psi$ mesons coming from $B$-meson decay ($F_{B{\rightarrow}J/\psi}$) in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 510 GeV. The measurement is performed using the forward silicon vertex detector and central vertex detector at PHENIX, which provide precise tracking and distance-of-closest-approach determinations, enabling the statistical separation of $J/\psi$ due to $B$-meson decays from prompt $J/\psi$. The measured value of $F_{B{\rightarrow}J/\psi}$ is 8. Read More

In large-scale emergencies social media has become a key source of information for public awareness, government authorities and relief agencies. However, the sheer volume of data and the low signal-to- noise ratio limit the effectiveness and the efficiency of using social media as an intelligence resource. We describe Australian Crisis Tracker (ACT), a tool designed for agencies responding to large- scale emergency events, to facilitate the understanding of critical information in Twitter. Read More

The Multiconjugate Adaptive Optics RelaY (MAORY) is and Adaptive Optics module to be mounted on the ESO European-Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). It is a hybrid Natural and Laser Guide System that will perform the correction of the atmospheric turbulence volume above the telescope feeding the Multi-AO Imaging Camera for Deep Observations Near Infrared spectro-imager (MICADO). We developed an end-to-end Monte- Carlo adaptive optics simulation tool to investigate the performance of a the MAORY and the calibration, acquisition, operation strategies. Read More

We study smooth volume-preserving perturbations of the time-1 map of the geodesic flow $\psi_{t}$ of a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three with constant negative curvature. We show that such a perturbation has equal extremal Lyapunov exponents with respect to volume within both the stable and unstable bundles if and only if it embeds as the time-1 map of a smooth volume-preserving flow that is smoothly orbit equivalent to $\psi_{t}$. Our techniques apply more generally to give an essentially complete classification of smooth, volume-preserving, dynamically coherent partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms which satisfy a uniform quasiconformality condition on their stable and unstable bundles and have either uniformly compact center foliation or are obtained as perturbations of the time-1 map of an Anosov flow. We show that every measurable invariant conformal structure for a H\"older continuous linear cocycle over a subshift of finite type coincides almost everywhere with a continuous invariant conformal structure. We use this result to establish H\"older continuity of a measurable conjugacy between H\"older continuous cocycles where one of the cocycles is assumed to be uniformly quasiconformal. As a special case we derive that if a H\"older linear cocycle is a measurable coboundary, then it is a H\"older coboundary. Read More

We give examples of locally constant $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-cocycles over a Bernoulli shift which are discontinuity points for Lyapunov exponents in the H\"older topology and are arbitrarily close to satisfying the fiber bunching inequality. Backes, Brown, and the author have shown that the Lyapunov exponents vary continuously when restricted to the space of fiber bunched H\"older continuous cocycles. Our examples give evidence that this theorem is optimal within certain families of H\"older cocycles. Read More

We prove a conjecture of Viana which states that Lyapunov exponents vary continuously when restricted to $GL(2,\mathbb{R})$-valued cocycles over a subshift of finite type which admit invariant holonomies that depend continuously on the cocycle. Read More

In this document the PHENIX collaboration proposes a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This upgrade, sPHENIX, enables an extremely rich jet and beauty quarkonia physics program addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP), discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The startling dynamics of the QGP on fluid-like length scales is an emergent property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), seemingly implicit in the Lagrangian but stubbornly hidden from view. Read More

We study the relationship between the Lyapunov exponents of the geodesic flow of a closed negatively curved manifold and the geometry of the manifold. We show that if each periodic orbit of the geodesic flow has exactly one Lyapunov exponent on the unstable bundle then the manifold has constant negative curvature. We also show under a curvature pinching condition that equality of all Lyapunov exponents with respect to volume on the unstable bundle also implies that the manifold has constant negative curvature. We review the results of the 1988 multi-wavelength campaign on the late-type eclipsing binary YY Geminorum. Observations include: broad-band optical and near infra-red photometry, simultaneous optical and ultraviolet (IUE) spectroscopy, X-ray (Ginga) and radio (VLA) data. From models fitted to the optical light curves, fundamental physical parameters have been determined together with evidence for transient maculations (spots) located near quadrature longitudes and intermediate latitudes. It is shown theoretically that a one-dimensional crystal with time reversal symmetry is characterized by a Z_{2} topological invariant that predicts the existence or otherwise of edge states. This is confirmed experimentally through the construction and simulation of a photonic crystal analogue in the microwave regime. Read More

We report in this letter for the first time the numerical simulations of muon and neutron flux variations at the surface of the earth with varying air densities in the troposphere and stratosphere. The simulated neutron and muon flux variations are in very good agreement with the measured neutron flux variation in Oulu and the muon flux variation in Atlanta. We conclude from this study that the stratosphere air density variation dominates the effects on the muon flux changes while the density variation in troposphere mainly influences the neutron count variation. The PHENIX collaboration presents a concept for a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This upgrade, referred to as sPHENIX, brings exciting new capability to the RHIC program by opening new and important channels for experimental investigation and utilizing fully the luminosity of the recently upgraded RHIC facility. sPHENIX enables a compelling jet physics program that will address fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. We introduce a generalization of the Krushkal polynomial to nonorientable surfaces, and prove that this polynomial has a natural quasi-tree expansion. This generalized Krushkal polynomial contains the Bollob\'as-Riordan polynomial of a (possibly nonorientable) ribbon graph as a specialization. The quasi-tree expansion proven here then extends the recent quasi-tree expansions of the Bollob\'as-Riordan polynomial deduced in the oriented case by A. Read More

Aims: We carried out high-resolution spectroscopy and BV(I)_C photometric monitoring of the two fastest late-type rotators in the nearby Beta Pictoris moving group, HD199143 (F7V) and CD-641208 (K7V). The motivation for this work is to investigate the rotation periods and photospheric spot patterns of these very young stars, with a longer term view to probing the evolution of rotation and magnetic activity during the early phases of main-sequence evolution. We also aim to derive information on key physical parameters, such as rotational velocity and rotation period. Read More

We introduce an additional structure on ribbon graphs, arrow structure. We extend the Bollob\'as-Riordan polynomial to ribbon graph with this structure. The extended polynomial satisfies the contraction-deletion relations and naturally behaves with respect to the partial duality of ribbon graphs. Read More

We establish a relation between the Bollobas-Riordan polynomial of a ribbon graph with the relative Tutte polynomial of a plane graph obtained from the ribbon graph using its projection to the plane in a nontrivial way. Also we give a duality formula for the relative Tutte polynomial of dual plane graphs and an expression of the Kauffman bracket of a virtual link as a specialization of the relative Tutte polynomial. Measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) allow high precision observation of the Last Scattering Surface at redshift $z\sim$1100. After the success of the NASA satellite COBE, that in 1992 provided the first detection of the CMB anisotropy, results from many ground-based and balloon-borne experiments have showed a remarkable consistency between different results and provided quantitative estimates of fundamental cosmological properties. During 2003 the team of the NASA WMAP satellite has released the first improved full-sky maps of the CMB since COBE, leading to a deeper insight into the origin and evolution of the Universe. Spectroscopic observations covering the wavelength range 3600--4600\AA are presented for a large flare on the late type M dwarf AT Mic (dM4.5e). A procedure to estimate the physical parameters of the flaring plasma has been used which assumes a simplified slab model of the flare based on a comparison of observed and computed Balmer decrements. The Planck mission will provide full-sky maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background with unprecedented angular resolution (~ 10') and sensitivity (DT / T = 10^-6). This requires cryogenically cooled, high sensitivity detectors as well as an extremely accurate control of systematic errors, which must be kept at micro-K level. In this work we focus on systematic effects arising from thermal instabilities in the Low Frequency Instrument operating in the 30-100 GHz range. Read More
