In this work, we present the investigation of temperature dependent hall measurement of the ultra thin VO$_2$ films grown on Si/SiO$_2$ substrate. Experimental results suggest that electrons are the predominant carrier both in the semiconducting and metallic phases. The decrease of the resistivity with increasing temperature is mainly caused by the increase in the number density of charge carriers. Read More

Possible differences between free and bound protons may be observed in the ratio of polarization-transfer components, $P'_x/P'_z$. We report the measurement of $P'_x/P'_z$, in the $^2\textrm{H}(\vec{e},e^{\prime}\vec{p})n$ reaction at low and high missing momenta. Observed increasing deviation of $P'_x/P'_z$ from that of a free proton as a function of the virtuality, similar to that observed in \hefour, indicates that the effect in nuclei is due to the virtuality of the knock-out proton and not due to the average nuclear density. We present the 8th Full Focal Plane simulation set (FFP8), deployed in support of the Planck 2015 results. FFP8 consists of 10 fiducial mission realizations reduced to 18144 maps, together with the most massive suite of Monte Carlo realizations of instrument noise and CMB ever generated, comprising $10^4$ mission realizations reduced to about $10^6$ maps. The resulting maps incorporate the dominant instrumental, scanning, and data analysis effects; remaining subdominant effects will be included in future updates. Read More

Gravitational microlensing events produced by lenses composed of binary masses are important because they provide a major channel to determine physical parameters of lenses. In this work, we analyze the light curves of two binary-lens events OGLE-2006-BLG-277 and OGLE-2012-BLG-0031 for which the light curves exhibit strong deviations from standard models. From modeling considering various second-order effects, we find that the deviations are mostly explained by the effect of the lens orbital motion. Read More

We present the first results on the Dalitz-plot structure and improved measurements of the time-dependent CP-violation parameters of the process $B^0 \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S K^0_S$ obtained using $468\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $B$ factory at SLAC. In topological insulators (TI), strong spin-orbit coupling results in non-trivial scattering processes of the surface states, whose effects include suppressed back scattering1, 2, 3, 4 weak anti-localization5, 6 and the possibility of an exotic Kondo effect that mimics graphene7. Introducing time reversal breaking perturbations and establishing long-range magnetic order has been theorized to lead to the formation of quantized magnetoelectric phenomena8, fractionalized charge excitations, and the appearance of quantum wire states9. A key, elusive, step in exploring these and other novel electronic phases is the experimental observation of charge backscattering due to spin-flip processes at the surface of a magnetically-doped TI. We consider the problem of the measurement of very small displacements in the transverse plane of an optical image with a split photodetector. We show that the standard quantum limit for such a measurement, which is equal to the diffraction limit divided by the square root of the number of photons used in the measurement, cannot be overcome by use of ordinary single-mode squeezed light. We give the form of possible multimode nonclassical states of light, enabling us to enhance by orders of magnitude the resolution of such a measurement beyond the standard quantum limit. Read More

We have constructed a 3D photoionisation model of a planetary nebula (PN) similar in structure to NGC 7009 with its outer pair of knots (also known as FLIERs --fast, low-ionization emission regions). The work is motivated by the fact that the strong [N II]6583A line emission from FLIERs in many planetary nebulae has been attributed to a significant local overabundance of nitrogen. We explore the possibility that the apparent enhanced nitrogen abundance previously reported in the FLIERs may be due to ionization effects. Read More

we experimentally implement a fault-tolerant quantum key distribution protocol with two photons in a decoherence-free subspace (DFS). It is demonstrated that our protocol can yield good key rate even with large bit-flip error rate caused by collective rotation, while the usual realization of BB84 protocol cannot produce any secure final key given the same channel. We have initiated a long-term project, the BOAO photometric survey of open clusters, to enlarge our understanding of galactic structure using UBVI CCD photometry of open clusters which have been little studied before. This is the second paper of the project in which we present the photometry of 12 open clusters. We propose a new formula for extracting the polarized gluon distribution $\Delta g$ in the proton from the large--$p_T$ light hadron pair production in deep inelastic semi-inclusive reactions. Though the process dominantly occurs via photon--gluon fusion(PGF) and QCD Compton, we can remove an effect of QCD Compton from the combined cross section of light hadron pair production by using symmetry relation among fragmentation functions and thus, rather clearly extract information of $\Delta g$. Epitaxial thin films of stoichiometric ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ were grown on ${\rm SrTiO_3(110)}$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique. The periodic bounce configurations responsible for quantum tunneling are obtained explicitly and are extended to the finite energy case for minisuperspace models of the Universe. As a common feature of the tunneling models at finite energy considered here we observe that the period of the bounce increases with energy monotonically. Using microwave detected, microwave-optical double resonance, we have measured the homogeneous linewidths of individual rovibrational transitions in the \~A state of NH3, NH2D, NHD2, and ND3. We have used this excited state spectroscopic data to characterize the height of the dissociation barrier and the mechanisms by which the molecule uses its excess vibrational and rotational energies to help overcome this barrier.
