At equilibrium, thermodynamic and kinetic information can be extracted from biomolecular energy landscapes by many techniques. However, while static, ensemble techniques yield thermodynamic data, often only dynamic, single-molecule techniques can yield the kinetic data that describes transition-state energy barriers. Here we present a generalized framework based upon dwell-time distributions that can be used to connect such static, ensemble techniques with dynamic, single-molecule techniques, and thus characterize energy landscapes to greater resolutions. The emergence of oscillations in models of the El-Ni\~no effect is of utmost relevance. Here we investigate a coupled nonlinear delay differential system modeling theEl-Ni\~no/ Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, which arises through the strong coupling of the ocean-atmosphere system. In particular, we study the temporal patterns of the sea surface temperature anomaly of the two sub-regions. Read More

In this article, the concept of nil clean graph of a ring has been generalised to weakly nil clean graph of a ring and graph theoretic properties like girth, clique number, diameter and chromatic index of the graph have been studied for a finite commutative ring. Read More

This paper presents a novel framework in which image cosegmentation and colocalization are cast into a single optimization problem that integrates information from low level appearance cues with that of high level localization cues in a very weakly supervised manner. In contrast to multi-task learning paradigm that learns similar tasks using a shared representation, the proposed framework leverages two representations at different levels and simultaneously discriminates between foreground and background at the bounding box and superpixel level using discriminative clustering. We show empirically that constraining the two problems at different scales enables the transfer of semantic localization cues to improve cosegmentation output whereas local appearance based segmentation cues help colocalization. Effect of airfoil thickness on onset of dynamic stall is investigated using large eddy simulations at chord-based Reynolds number of 200,000. Four symmetric NACA airfoils of thickness-to-chord ratios of 9%, 12%, 15%, and 18% are studied. The 3-D Navier Stokes solver, FDL3DI is used with a sixth-order compact finite difference scheme for spatial discretization, second-order implicit time integration, and discriminating filters to remove unresolved wavenumbers. Motivated by the concept of clean ideals, we introduce the notion of weakly clean ideals. We define an ideal $I$ of a ring $R$ to be weakly clean ideal if for any $x\in I$, $x=u+e$ or $x=u-e$, where $u$ is a unit in $R$ and $e$ is an idempotent in $R$. We discuss various properties of weakly clean ideals. Read More

We have studied numerically the states reached in a quench from various temperatures in the one-dimensional fully-connected Kotliar, Anderson and Stein Ising spin glass model. \ This is a model where there are long-range interactions between the spins which falls off as a power $\sigma$ of their separation. We have made a detailed study in particular of th\ e energies of the states reached in a quench from infinite temperature and their overlaps, including the spin glass susceptibility. Read More

We present a method to reconstruct the complete statistical mode structure and optical losses of multimode conjugated optical fields using an experimentally measured joint photon-number probability distribution. We demonstrate that this method evaluates classical and non-classical properties using a single measurement technique and is well-suited for quantum mesoscopic state characterization. We obtain a nearly-perfect reconstruction of a field comprised of up to 10 modes based on a minimal set of assumptions. Read More

The elemental Nb is mainly investigated for its eminent superconducting properties. In contrary, we report of a relatively unexplored property, namely, its superior optoelectronic property in reduced dimension. We demonstrate here that nanostructured Nb thin films (NNFs), under optical illumination, behave as room temperature photo-switches and exhibit bolometric features below its superconducting critical temperature. Very often in some censorious healthcare scenario, there may be a need to have some expert consultancies (especially by doctors) that are not available in-house to the hospital. With the advancement in technologies (such as video conferencing, smartphone, etc.), it has become reality that, for the critical medical cases in the hospitals, expert consultants (ECs) from around the world could be hired, who will serve the patients by their physical or virtual presence. A method for inverse design of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) is presented in this paper. The direct solver for aerodynamic analysis solves the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations, where the effect of the turbine rotor is modeled as momentum sources using the actuator disk model (ADM); this approach is referred to as RANS/ADM. The inverse problem is posed as follows: for a given selection of airfoils, the objective is to find the blade geometry (described as blade twist and chord distributions) which realizes the desired turbine aerodynamic performance at the design point; the desired performance is prescribed as angle of attack ($\alpha$) and axial induction factor ($a$) distributions along the blade. Finding similar user pairs is a fundamental task in social networks, with numerous applications in ranking and personalization tasks such as link prediction and tie strength detection. A common manifestation of user similarity is based upon network structure: each user is represented by a vector that represents the user's network connections, where pairwise cosine similarity among these vectors defines user similarity. The predominant task for user similarity applications is to discover all similar pairs that have a pairwise cosine similarity value larger than a given threshold $\tau$. Read More

The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. Read More

Detecting strong ties among users in social and information networks is a fundamental operation that can improve performance on a multitude of personalization and ranking tasks. Strong-tie edges are often readily obtained from the social network as users often participate in multiple overlapping networks via features such as following and messaging. These networks may vary greatly in size, density and the information they carry. Read More

Motivated by the concept of weakly clean rings, we introduce the concept of weakly $r$-clean rings. We define an element $x$ of a ring $R$ as weakly $r$-clean if it can be expressed as $x=r+e$ or $x=r-e$ where $e$ is an idempotent and $r$ is a regular element of $R$. If all the elements of $R$ are weakly $r$-clean then $R$ is called a weakly $r$-clean ring. Read More

Cascades on online networks have been a popular subject of study in the past decade, and there is a considerable literature on phenomena such as diffusion mechanisms, virality, cascade prediction, and peer network effects. However, a basic question has received comparatively little attention: how desirable are cascades on a social media platform from the point of view of users? While versions of this question have been considered from the perspective of the producers of cascades, any answer to this question must also take into account the effect of cascades on their audience. In this work, we seek to fill this gap by providing a consumer perspective of cascade. Read More

We study the condition of spontaneously generating an excitonic mass gap due to Coulomb interaction between anisotropic Dirac fermions in an uniaxially strained graphene. The mass gap equation is realized as a self-consistent solution for the self-energy within Hartree-Fock mean-field and static random phase approximation. It depends not only on the momentum because of long-range nature of the interaction but also on the velocity anisotropy due to uniaxial strain. Read More

Spin transfer torque nano-oscillators are potential candidates for replacing the traditional inductor based voltage controlled oscillators in modern communication devices. Typical oscillator designs are based on trilayer magnetic tunnel junctions which are disadvantaged by low power outputs and poor conversion efficiencies. In this letter, we theoretically propose to use resonant spin filtering in pentalayer magnetic tunnel junctions as a possible route to alleviate these issues and present device designs geared toward a high microwave output power and an efficient conversion of the d. We present measurements of three-particle correlations for various harmonics in Au+Au collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The quantity $\langle\cos(m\phi_1+n\phi_2-(m+n)\phi_3)\rangle$ is evaluated as a function of $\sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}$, collision centrality, transverse momentum, $p_T$, pseudo-rapidity difference, $\Delta\eta$, and harmonics ($m$ and $n$). We present three-particle mixed-harmonic correlations $\langle \cos (m\phi_1 + n\phi_2 - (m+n) \phi_3)\rangle$ for charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We find evidence for correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. Read More

We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) of the charm meson $D^0$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|$\,$<$\,1) in Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 200\,GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured $D^0$ $v_2$ in 0--80\% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) less than 4\,GeV/$c$. Read More

In 2010, Joyce et. al defined the leverage centrality of vertices in a graph as a means to analyze functional connections within the human brain. In this metric a degree of a vertex is compared to the degrees of all it neighbors. Read More

How much can pruning algorithms teach us about the fundamentals of learning representations in neural networks? A lot, it turns out. Neural network model compression has become a topic of great interest in recent years, and many different techniques have been proposed to address this problem. In general, this is motivated by the idea that smaller models typically lead to better generalization. Read More

Cells and tissues exert forces and can actively change shape. This strikingly autonomous behavior is powered by the cytoskeleton, which includes an active gel of actin filaments, crosslinks, and myosin molecular motors. Although individual motors are only a few nm in size and exert minute forces of a few pN, cells spatially integrate the activity of an ensemble of motors to produce larger contractile forces (order nN and greater) on cellular, tissue, and organismal length scales (order 10 {\mu}m and greater). Since last few years, research based on topological insulators (TI) is in great interests due to intrinsic exotic fundamental properties and future potential applications such as quantum computers or spintronics. The fabrication of TI nanodevices and study on their transport properties mostly focused on high quality crystalline nanowires or nanoribbons. Here we report robust approach of Bi2Se3 nanowire formation from deposited flakes using ion beam milling method. Read More

Recent progress indicates that highly symmetric recurring solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations such as equilibria and periodic orbits provide a skeleton for turbulence dynamics in state-space. Many of these solutions have been found for smooth-walled plane Couette, channel, and pipe flows. Rough-walled flows are of great practical significance, yet no recurring solutions are known for these flows. Read More

Unobserved or unknown confounders complicate even the simplest attempts to estimate the effect of one variable on another using observational data. When cause and effect are both affected by unobserved confounders, methods based on identifying natural experiments have been proposed to eliminate confounds. However, their validity is hard to verify because they depend on assumptions about the independence of variables, that by definition, cannot be measured. Read More

The escape rate of a Brownian particle over a potential barrier is accurately described by the Kramers theory. A quantitative theory explicitly taking the activity of Brownian particles into account has been lacking due to the inherently out-of-equilibrium nature of these particles. Using an effective equilibrium approach [Farage et al. Read More

Since the discovery of topological insulators (TI), there are considerable interests in demonstrating metallic surface states, their shielded robust nature to the backscattering and study their properties at nanoscale dimensions by fabricating nanodevices. Here we address an important scientific issue related to TI whether one can clearly demonstrate the robustness of topological surface states (TSS) to the presence of disorder that does not break any fundamental symmetry. The simple straightforward method of FIB milling was used to synthesize nanowires of Bi2Se3 which we believe an interesting route to test robustness of TSS and obtained results are new compared to many of the earlier papers on quantum transport in TI demonstrating robustness of metallic SS to gallium doping. We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for mid-rapidity di-jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV. The di-jet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. $A_{LL}$ results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. Effects of substrate temperature, substrate wettability and particles concentration are experimentally investigated for evaporation of a sessile water droplet containing colloidal particles. Time-varying droplet shapes and temperature of the liquid-gas interface are measured using high-speed visualization and infrared thermography, respectively. The motion of the particles inside the evaporating droplet is qualitatively visualized by an optical microscope and profile of final particle deposit is measured by an optical profilometer. Previous work has established the usefulness of the resolvent operator that maps the terms nonlinear in the turbulent fluctuations to the fluctuations themselves. Further work has described the self-similarity of the resolvent arising from that of the mean velocity profile. The orthogonal modes provided by the resolvent analysis describe the wall-normal coherence of the motions and inherit that self-similarity. Read More

Data generated from real world events are usually temporal and contain multimodal information such as audio, visual, depth, sensor etc. which are required to be intelligently combined for classification tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel generalized deep neural network architecture where temporal streams from multiple modalities are combined. Read More

We report the first di-jet transverse momentum asymmetry measurements from Au+Au and p+p collisions at RHIC. The two highest-energy back-to-back jets reconstructed from fragments with transverse momenta above 2 GeV/c display a significantly stronger momentum imbalance in heavy-ion collisions than in the p+p reference. When re-examined with correlated soft particles included, we observe that these di-jets then exhibit a unique new feature -- momentum balance is restored to that observed in p+p for a jet resolution parameter of R=0. Dark Matter (DM) comprising particles in the mass range of a few MeV to GeV is waiting to be explored, given the many theoretical models accommodating cosmological abundance. We hereby propose an experiment with the LHC proton beam of 7 TeV striking onto the beam dump target, emitting neutrinos and possibly, Dark Matter candidates. This experiment would also permit to observe signatures involving elastic and inelastic processes involving DM candidates, electrons and strongly interacting particles present in nuclei of the dump target. We develop an exact Green-Kubo formula relating nonequilibrium averages in systems of interacting active Brownian particles to equilibrium time-correlation functions. The method is applied to calculate the density-dependent average swim speed, which is a key quantity entering coarse grained theories of active matter. The average swim speed is determined by integrating the equilibrium autocorrelation function of the interaction force acting on a tagged particle. Read More

We present a measurement of the inclusive production of Upsilon mesons in U+U collisions at 193 GeV at mid-rapidity (|y| < 1). Previous studies in central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV show a suppression of Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) production relative to expectations from the Upsilon yield in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll), with an indication that the Upsilon(1S) state is also suppressed. The present measurement extends the number of participant nucleons in the collision (Npart) by 20% compared to Au+Au collisions, and allows us to study a system with higher energy density. Read More

We present the first measurement of charge-dependent directed flow in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The results are presented as a function of the particle transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for different centralities. A finite difference between the directed flow of positive and negative charged particles is observed that qualitatively agrees with the expectations from the effects of the initial strong electric field between two colliding ions with different nuclear charges.
